Fiction
20th Century Struggle for
Civil Rights
GCSE Writing Skills The Sign of Four
Students will:
- Build on their analytical skills,
exploring a range of poetry from
WW1.
- Read a variety of non-fiction pieces,
from famous speeches to soldier’s
diaries. This study will develop their
historical and cultural knowledge, as
well as support them in studying the
poetry from the same time period.
- Students will practise comparison
skills, comparing different poems
and different perspectives on WW1.
- Students will experiment with
writing their own poetry based on
challenging topics and materials.
Students will:
- Read and explore challenging and
important themes in Steinbeck’s
classic Of Mice and Men.
- Explore the struggle for freedom
and civil rights, reading and
responding to famous speeches
that have helped shape history.
- Develop their ability to be critical
readers, forming their own
opinions and arguments about
important social issues.
- Explore a range of persuasive and
rhetorical devices, developing their
ability to use sentence structures
and vocabulary to present their
point of view.
Students will:
- Begin preparing for
their GCSEs by
undertaken a study
creative writing study.
- Using a variety of
provocative and
interesting images,
students will practise
writing detailed
descriptions to bring
images and settings to
life.
- Learn different
approaches to writing
narratives,
experimenting with
language and structure
to create interesting
texts.
Students will:
- Prepare for their
GCSES by reading one
of their core texts.
(probably The Sign of
Four) but may change
- Focus on
understanding the
key events and
characters in the text,
in readiness for a
more complex study
in years 10 and 11.
- Make links and
connections between
the content studied
this year and GCSE
expectations.

Year 9 curriculum

  • 1. Year 9 Term One and Term Two Term Three and Four Term Five Term Six Topic WW1 Poetry and Non- Fiction 20th Century Struggle for Civil Rights GCSE Writing Skills The Sign of Four Students will: - Build on their analytical skills, exploring a range of poetry from WW1. - Read a variety of non-fiction pieces, from famous speeches to soldier’s diaries. This study will develop their historical and cultural knowledge, as well as support them in studying the poetry from the same time period. - Students will practise comparison skills, comparing different poems and different perspectives on WW1. - Students will experiment with writing their own poetry based on challenging topics and materials. Students will: - Read and explore challenging and important themes in Steinbeck’s classic Of Mice and Men. - Explore the struggle for freedom and civil rights, reading and responding to famous speeches that have helped shape history. - Develop their ability to be critical readers, forming their own opinions and arguments about important social issues. - Explore a range of persuasive and rhetorical devices, developing their ability to use sentence structures and vocabulary to present their point of view. Students will: - Begin preparing for their GCSEs by undertaken a study creative writing study. - Using a variety of provocative and interesting images, students will practise writing detailed descriptions to bring images and settings to life. - Learn different approaches to writing narratives, experimenting with language and structure to create interesting texts. Students will: - Prepare for their GCSES by reading one of their core texts. (probably The Sign of Four) but may change - Focus on understanding the key events and characters in the text, in readiness for a more complex study in years 10 and 11. - Make links and connections between the content studied this year and GCSE expectations.
