XVII CONVEGNO EUROPEO J. Gerstel - LOW GWP REPLACEMENTS FOR R-404A IN A COMME...Centro Studi Galileo
This document summarizes a presentation on very low GWP refrigerant replacements for R-404A. It introduces two new refrigerants from Chemours, R-454A and R-454C, which have GWPs below 250. Thermodynamic cycle analysis shows their COP is similar to or better than R-404A. Drop-in testing in a commercial freezer found their energy consumption to be within 3-8% of R-404A. Both refrigerants showed comparable material compatibility and higher allowable charge sizes than lower GWP alternatives like propane. The presentation concludes that R-454A and R-454C are very low GWP replacements for R-404A that demonstrate promising properties and performance.
The European F-gas Regulation 517/2014 aims to reduce emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases through two strategies: preventing leakage and emissions, and avoiding the use of F-gases. It defines rules around leakage prevention, training and certification requirements, bans on certain refrigerants, phase down of HFC supply quotas, and implications for the refrigeration and air conditioning sector. The regulation requires leak checks be based on refrigerant quantities in CO2-equivalent amounts and introduces bans on high-GWP refrigerants for certain applications from 2020 onward. It also establishes an HFC phase down schedule from 2015-2030 that will lower the maximum quantities available each year.
XVII CONVEGNO EUROPEO C. Zilio - HEAT EXCHANGER OPTIMISATION USING ZEOTROPIC ...Centro Studi Galileo
The document summarizes a study comparing the performance of refrigerant R455A as a replacement for R404A in finned coil condensers. Thermodynamic and heat transfer simulations show that R455A has a 28% higher latent heat of condensation, allowing for lower refrigerant flow rates. Modeling of a sample finned coil condenser indicates that when R404A and R455A are operated to provide the same heat duty, R455A achieves this at a lower average saturation temperature. The analysis suggests R455A can be a viable drop-in replacement for R404A in finned coil condensers if circuit layouts account for R455A's temperature glide effect.

The document discusses the challenges for refrigerants currently and in the future. It notes that the F-Gas regulation is strongly influencing the refrigeration market through a phase down of average GWP levels and bans on some HFCs for certain sectors. By 2030, the average GWP will need to be reduced to 800. This will require the use of natural refrigerants like CO2, ammonia, and hydrocarbons as shorter term HFC replacements may not be available or the situation could become chaotic. CO2 transcritical systems are presented as a long term solution for supermarkets.

The reductions are even larger than they appear because baseline exclusions and exemptions mean actual reductions will be 48% in 2018 and 64% in 2021. Early effects include HFC stockpiling, price increases, and risks of illegal trade and material shortages. The regulation provides an opportunity for European green technologies to be mainstreamed globally through the Montreal Protocol HCFC phase-out.
XVII CONVEGNO EUROPEO A. Kaschl - IMPLEMENTING THE EU PHASE DOWNCentro Studi Galileo
The document summarizes the EU's phase-down of F-gases, or hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), under the F-gas Regulation to reduce emissions. It outlines that the regulation establishes an upstream quota system to reduce HFC imports and production in the EU by 80% by 2030 from a 2015 baseline. Companies must register and report HFC quantities and are issued annual quotas to place HFCs on the EU market. The goals of the phase-down are to stimulate innovation, support climate policy, and facilitate convergence with the Montreal Protocol, while emissions and consumption are already falling under the regulation.
The document summarizes the topics that will be covered during presentations at the Latest Technologies in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning conference in Milan on June 9-10, 2017. The three topics are: 1) how to apply F-gas regulations and ongoing actions to reduce gases, 2) challenges and solutions for cold chains internationally from political and technical perspectives, and 3) opportunities for renewable energy in cooling due to regulations and new technologies in refrigeration and air conditioning.

Improving the viability of probiotics by encapsulation methods for developmen...Open Access Research Paper
The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.
Optimizing Post Remediation Groundwater Performance with Enhanced Microbiolog...Joshua Orris
Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

Conclusions:
• Based on preliminary testing, Embraco cannot consider R407F,
R407A, R448A nor R449A as a drop-in substitution for systems using
Embraco R404A compressors.
• Usage of mentioned refrigerants can require additional actions as for
instance system condensing temperature reduction (larger condenser,
improved ventilation) and/or return gas temperature reduction in order
to achieve similar thermal profile as with refrigerant R404A.
• In particular usage in systems operating under high compression
ratio conditions should be avoided
• Only R452A can be in this stage considered as a drop-in refrigerant.
