Most Critical Design Parameter for
CO2 is Pressure
• Most challenging feature is the high pressure for the Enclosure and sliding surfaces
• Enclosures designed at least for 3 times the max allowed pressures
– 270/420 bar for Medium Temperature
– 100/150 bar for booster and cascade LT application
• Sliding surfaces are highly stressed when used for transcritical application (reliability)

Consequence of Flammability
• Flammability needs compliance with European Directives 94/9/EC and
99/9/EC so called ATEX
• Directives set the requirement for devices operating the explosive atmosphere
• Directive 94/9/EC is not harmonized with the standard EN378, does not
differentiate between flammability class as classified by EN378 (A2/A3) or
ASHRAE34 (A2L, A2, A3)
• Directive 94/4/EC impacts the electrical components of the compressor
Atmosphere Occurancy Zone Impact for the compressor
Explosive Permanent 0 Not applicable for most of refrigeration application
Occasionally 1
Accidentally 2 Assessment and mitigate the risk according to EN60079
Non Explosive Accidentally No zone Safe Ambient around the compressor (w/ or w/o ventilation)
15. Latest Technologies in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning - XVI European Conference Milano, 12th - 13th June 2015
15
• PED directive 97/3/EC classifies the equipment in
accordance to the exposure risk, hence PED is more
restrictive for flammable
• All pressure bearing parts shall comply with PED (shell,
fittings, sight glass, Fusite)
• Scroll compressor housing belongs to higher PED
category by using flammable refrigerant

• Good potential with R448A/R449A for MT applications
• Potential shortfalls when replacing R404A in LT applications
– Efficiency shortfall will have a negative impact on global emissions
• HFO blends with GWP below 300 are promising candidates
– High discharge temperature most probably requires liquid/wet injection for LT
• CO2’s most challenging criteria is the high pressure for MT
• R290 shows good Performances, but high flammability is still a limiting factor
• Refrigerants with GWP below 300 are flammable except CO2
– Affects of electrical and the main pressure bearing parts
• Industry is investing in development qualification of many refrigerants
– Only few likely to be relevant in 15 years
Conclusion
