Sensory Experience
IMAGERY
The Eagle
- Alfred, Lord Tennyson
• Who is the persona in the poem?
• Where could be the persona be as he speaks in the
poem?
• What words directly stimulated your senses?
• How did these words appeal to you?
Sensory Experience
It is the literary device that
makes use of imagery to
enliven the the five basic
human senses.
Imagery
It is the use of vivid and descriptive
language to add depth to their work. It
appeals to human senses to deepen the
reader’s understanding of the work.
Together, At Last
- John Oliver M. Ramos
I saw you walk towards me.
Your footsteps fell heavy on the hardwood floor.
Your perfume reached me before you did.
We got caught in a tight embrace.
We kissed;
I tasted love.
1st Line
I saw you walk towards me.
2nd Line
Your footsteps fell heavy on the
hardwood floor.
3rd Line
Your perfume reached me
before you did.
4th Line
We got caught in a tight
embrace.
5th Line
I tasted love.
Tell the name of imagery for each
sense.
1. Sense of sight
2. Sense of smell
3. Sense of taste
4. Sense of touch
5. Sense of hearing
1. I walked down the dark street.
I was alone at first. Then at the
end of the road, a figure
appeared. I ran away from it,
scared.
2. I walked down the long and
winding street. It was close to
midnight, and I can feel the cold
breeze blowing around me. I had
no one with me as I walked along
the gravelled path.
I trudged through the cobblestones,
avoiding the potholes filled with
water; it had just rained. As I
approached the middle of the street,
I came to sudden stop.
I stood for a moment as I let my
eyes focus on what was appearing
before me. Right there, at the end of
the dark street, I saw her: a figure of
a woman draped in white, with long
flowing dark hair, her back turned to
me.
Slowly, the figure started to turn. I
could not take my eyes of her. When
she finally faced me, I gasped. She
had no face. I screamed, and turned
back to run.
Improve the following statements by adding
sensory details.
1. It was early morning. The sun was just rising. (sense of sight)
2. The baker was making fresh bread. (sense of smell)
3. The altar boys were beckoning the people to go to mass. (sense of sight)
4. The young boy was eating breakfast at the corner store. (sense of taste)
5. The breeze was blowing softly. (sense of touch)
Unlock the imagery used in each sentence.
1. The old man took the handful of dust, and sifted it through his skin and
fingers.
2. The sound of drum in the distance attracted him.
3. The beacons of moonlight bathed the room in ethereal light.
4. The aroma of the newly brewed coffee woke him.
5. The burger, aromatic with spices, made his mouth water in anticipation of
the first bite.
