ABSTRACT
We report in this presentation on a current project of which the aim is to develop teaching approaches that engage doctoral students in working together as a research community to develop their critical writing and peer reviewing skills. We seek to foster in students a sense of collective endeavour in developing writing and research, and to encourage the sharing of ideas, drafts, and semi-formed thoughts in an atmosphere of mutual support. The project was launched via a residential critical writing weekend for students, featuring a range of taught sessions focussing on aspects of critical writing and reviewing and
featuring opportunities for students to engage in peer assessment activities. The students then formed an
editorial board for an online journal for doctoral students, through which they are involved in critical

One of the most persistent factors limiting the impact of user research in business is that projects often stop with a cataloging findings and implications rather than generating opportunities that directly enable the findings. We’ve long heard the lament “Well, we got this report and it just sat there. We didn’t know what to do with it.” But design research (or ethnography, or user research, or whatever the term du jour may be) has also become standard practice, as opposed to something exceptional or innovative. That means that designers are increasingly involved in using contextual research to inform their design work. Courses at CHI and elsewhere have increased the ranks of designers and others who feel comfortable conducting user research. But analysis and synthesis is a more slippery skill set, and we see how easy it is for teams to ignore (more out of frustration than anything malicious) data that doesn’t immediately seem actionable. This course gives people the tools to take control over synthesis and ideation themselves by breaking it down into a manageable framework and process.

Conducting an ethnographic study is a fun way of gathering research about your social environment. You may have done an ethnography before without really being aware of it. In a small way, this assignment recreates what ethnographers do when they visit a new community to conduct research.
Complete the following:
Observation
Choose a restaurant, library, mall, dining hall, coffee shop, or similar public location. Plan to spend a minimum of two hours at the location. You will visit this location twice, for a minimum of four hours total. Keep in mind that if you should find one of your peers in the establishment at the same time when you are there, do not interrupt him/her and do not do the assignment at the same time.
Document what occurs at this chosen location:
Describe the establishment.
Analyze the interactions between people.
Next, write a paper documenting and analyzing your observations of the location.
Observation Notes
Your observation notes should specifically include the following:
Name and location of the establishment
Dates and times you were there
Place where you stood/sat and when you did your research
Description of the physical characteristics of the inside and outside of the establishment (e.g. brick or concrete structure, paint color, seating arrangements)
Number and types of people visiting the establishment while you were there (age, sex, type of clothing, probable occupations, ethnicity, etc.)
Document interactions such as:
specific nature of the interactions that take place in the establishment among customers, between customers and staff, and among staff
types of languages used in the establishment and by whom
any strange or unusual behavior
Analysis Summary
Include the following in your analysis:
Comparison of similarities and differences of this establishment and other similar establishments you know about
Nature of the treatment of customers in the establishment

Attached is a slide deck I created on coding textual data, and below are links to a video on coding and an article on identifying themes in qualitative data. Also, some learners find the Week 8 lecture helpful to this assignment, so I have attached it here as well.
As you prepare this assignment, closely follow the directions in the PSY 850 Assignments Document. Because it asks you to inductively code the data, I will expect to see that each of you have developed your own codes and themes. That means do not use the codes and themes from the Clark and Springer (2007) article. However, you should compare and contrast your findings with theirs in the recommendations section.
Submit one paper in APA format with the required subsections delineated in the Assignments Guide: Introduction, Sample, Instruments, Data Analysis, Results, and Recommendations. Include a references list. You must complete all three tables in the Tables for Assignment 7 document and include those tables as an Appendix in your document. Do not submit them as a separate document nor embed them within the text of the paper.

Theme identification is one of the most fundamental tasks in qualitative research. It also one of the most mysterious. Explicit descriptions of theme discovery are rarely described in articles and reports and if so are often regulated to appendices or footnotes. Techniques are shared among small groups of social scientists and are often impeded by disciplinary or epistemological boundaries. During the proposal-writing phase of a project, investigators struggle to clearly explain and justify plans for discovering themes. These issues are particularly cogent when funding reviewers are unfamiliar with qualitative traditions. The goal of field observation is to obtain “thick descriptions” (as described by Clifford Geertz in The Interpretation of Cultures) of a setting or group from the perspective of the participants, and to explain what you observe using insights from the sociological perspective.
Observe the activities at a public place for two hours. Choose a place where you do not need to ask permission to stay and will not get in trouble for observing what is going on. This can be a coffee shop, a farmer’s market, a mall, a religious service, a train station, a courtroom, etc. Avoid schools, hospitals, anything on a military base, or any other restricted place. Make sure to go at a time when there will be a lot of activity. Take some notes about what is happening: What does this place look like? How is it organized spatially? Who comes here? What do they do? How do people interact with each other? What kind of conversations go on? Are there any subgroups? How do people handle unexpected or upsetting situations?
Write a narrative summary of your notes describing what you experienced. Then, explain how each of the three sociological perspectives (structural-functionalism, symbolic interactionism, and social conflict) would analyze what you say.
Your description of your observation should represent about 50% of your paper and your analysis another 50%, divided evenly between the three perspectives. At the end of your paper, discuss which perspective you think is the best suited to analyze your observation and why you think so. Whenever appropriate, link the information you present to concepts, theories, facts, and core values of “community and social justice” from the course.
You may use additional resources, provided they are appropriately cited. You are required to use the American Sociological Association (ASA) formatting style to format your paper and sources. Information on ASA is available in the course under Resources.

Purpose: To create an informative and insightful profile of either a group of people whose lives
and experiences we might otherwise not witness or understand, and/or a profile of a place and
the people who inhabit it, and/or an event and the perspectives of different people on the event.
Audience: Your audience for this essay is readers like yourselves: college-educated readers who
are curious about everyday experiences of ordinary people, and want to learn about amateur
archers, or the goings on behind the scenes at a local eatery; about a day in the life of a team of
firefighters, the American River Parkway, or people’s responses to the turkey population in Davis.
Role: Your role as a writer is to recreate and describe these people’s experiences, not only the
external world of your subjects but also your subjects’ internal reactions to events.
Context: You are asked to profile a group of people and/or a place, and/or an event and people’s
responses in such a way as to reveal aspects of your subject that would otherwise remain
unknown and invisible to your readers.

Topic:
Despite the quantity of information online and in print, most of us have very little idea what other
people do for a living, or how some of the everyday objects we buy are produced, distributed, sold
or disposed of. Structuring a creative non-fiction essay around a day in the life of volunteers at the
raptor center, or the janitorial staff on campus, or the process by which a surfboard is designed
and manufactures, affords insights into lives and experiences we might otherwise never learn
about or understand. Your aim is to document your subjects’ lives as fully as you can, and as
faithfully as you can. Your report needs to be authoritative, based on facts and evidence and first-
hand observation. And it needs to be revealing—you need to dig beyond the surface to discover
truths that might not be obvious to the casual bystander.
The subject of your informative profile is open, but you need to select a group, or a place, or an
event where you can conduct interviews yourself (primary sources) in addition to undertaking
secondary research. Consider focusing on one of the following:
an intriguing local place. This could be a public place, such as a government or campus
building, or possibly a store or other place of business.
an organization or recognized group of people—a campus club, a research lab, a local
business.
a significant recent event. If you choose an event, you must be able to rely on your own
personal observations of the event and you must be able to interview other people who were
there.
