When love speaks the voice of all the gods makes heaven drowsy with the harmony, Taming of the
Shrew, Act IV, scene II.
Besides being a well written play, the comedic devices that each act holds is used to help develop the
plot and the comedy effect of The Taming of the Shrew. The devices used has shown the audience
how the shrew could be changed by receiving the same treatment it has been giving. Shakespeare used
comedic devices to help keep the audience focused on the story and keep them guessing to what
Petruchio was going to do to make Katharina tame. The plot becomes developed when certain events
with family drama, quick witted language, and unexpected scenarios that take place to create plot
twists that no one can foreshadow. All of the materials used above shape a story of how a woman
changes dramatically with the help of one man who she undoubted calls her husband without any

Edgar Allen Poe is known for the various literary devices he uses in his works. One of the most
famous devices he uses is symbolism. In many of his stories, including The Masque of the Red Death,
The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell Tale Heart, and The Cask of Amontillado, Poe uses
symbolism to further develop each story by the messages he writes between the lines. Symbolism is an
important aspect of Poe s many works, seeing as how it allows the readers to make connections within
the stories. In The Cask of Amontillado, Poe represents symbolism through the title of the short story,
the outfit Fortunato wears, and the Montresor family motto and coat of arms. Many would not look to
a title of a piece of literature for symbolism. In The Cask of Amontillado, Poe uses the key word cask
as a huge symbol. The word cask refers to, a sturdy cylindrical container for storing liquids, such as
Amontillado, a fine wine, in this case (Lorcher). Montresor introduces the topic of the wine to his
former friend Fortunato by saying, My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you
are looking to day. But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts
(Poe). Fortunato is extremely intoxicated from carnival festivities prior to his conversation with
Montresor, so it is probable that his decision to go into the catacombs with Montresor is not for the
benefit of anyone but himself. He sees this journey with Montresor as a way to acquire one of two
possible outcomes free wine or a chance to further humiliate Montresor, especially after Montresor
suggests that Fortunato is not capable of distinguishing the Amontillado and mentions the name of a
rival, Luchresi (Lorcher). The symbolism in the key word of cask is that it has the same root as the
word casket. Poe s use of symbolism in this regard is often overlooked and written off as mere
coincidence, yet that is far from the truth. Fortunato s love of wine, and the ignorant and easily
influenced state the wine puts him in, leads him to make some of his most destructive decisions to not

The Nature Of Love In Plato s Symposium
Plato s Symposium discusses the ever present, complicated, and enigmatic idea of love. Throughout
the book, each speech gives diverse and sometimes contradictory ideas on the nature of love, its
benefits, its origin, and the different types of love. Each speech builds on ideas that will lead to the
conclusion made in Diotima s speech.
Phaedrus is the first to give his speech. He says that Love promotes virtue in people, and gives them
courage. Because people want to impress their lovers and avoid shame, they will strive to act
honorably and bravely. The power of love is so strong that if there was a city comprised of boys and
their lovers, it would be the best possible system of society, for they would hold back from all that is
shameful, and seek honor in each other s eyes (10). Phaedrus emphasizes the power of love by saying
that a city founded on love would be of the highest quality.
This introduces the idea of love being a powerful motivator, therefore setting the foundation for the
ladder of love mentioned in Diotima s speech. Phaedrus is the first to introduce the idea that love
motivates people to strive for higher ideals. In his speech, the ideal is esteem in the eyes of a loved
one. Later on, more ideals such as wisdom and order will be mentioned. This will develop into the
climbing of the ladder of love, as mentioned by Diotima.
Next, Pausanias says love is not inherently good or bad. It depends on how it is performed. There are
two kinds of love: Common Aphrodite and Heavenly Aphrodite; one is just about sex, while the other
is a transaction in which a boy gives sexual favors to a man in exchange for wisdom and
enlightenment. The former type has potential to be bad, and is less valuable because it focuses on the
body more than the soul, and...the least intelligent partners (14). Pausanias places all favor on the
latter type because it focuses on what is by nature stronger and more intelligent rather than base
desires (14).
This sets the foundation for the hierarchy of the aforementioned ladder of love. According to Diotima,
