Persuasive Essay About Helicopter Parenting
My parents gave me a choice, I could be free to experience and explore the internet, or I would be
monitored and protected from everything I saw. As in my parents see what I see, and I see what they
want me to see. Instinctively I took this as an insult, did they not trust me, was my mother trying to
smother me? Truthfully, they were just trying to look out for me and try helicopter parenting, opposing
from their usually lenient style of parenting. As we had a discussion on my presence on the internet, I
began to be creeped out about the idea my parents were spying on me, so I told them they had nothing
to worry about and that I would still be open to the idea of monitoring. After my talk with my parents,
I wondered did other teens have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It certainly isn t required for good child learning. And to the extent that we do manage to solve all of
our children s problems or keep those problems from ever even popping up we are doing rhwem a
disservice. Not a fatal one that will stunt our children forever. But still, we are steering them away
from the real source of confidence and independence, which comes comes from navigating the world
and its surprises. Especially the unpleasant ones (Skenazy 92).
For this reason many parents should advocate raising self reliant and responsible kids that learn from
their mistakes and grow from them. Mistakes are wrong, but good for developing mindsets. In order to
learn we must reflect on our mistakes which means always moving forward to bigger and better
things, with this mindset we are driven to achieve. In this case, when parents let kids have more online
privileges they are destined to fail one way or another which prepares them for the real world. This
mentality lets kids have room for improvement when it comes to their online presence, they catch
themselves doing the wrong thing and make a habit of doing the right thing. In her article, Trapped by
Helicopter Parents , Danah Boyd maintains that:
Rather than helping teens develop strategies for negotiating public life and the potential risks of
interacting with others, fearful parents have focused on tracking, monitoring and blocking. These
tactics don t help teens develop the skills they need to manage

Essay about Traits of Marlow in the Big Sleep
Marlowe The Big Sleep
What are my traits?
Marlowe runs a single man operation out of the Cahuenga building in Los Angeles. He is tall and big
enough to take care of himself. And his interests are Liquor, women, reading, chess and working
alone. He is educated enough that he can speak English ‘if he s required to . Marlowe used to work
for the district attorney, but was fired for insubordination.
Philip Marlowe, a private detective. Tall, dark, and rugged, with a poker face and a quick wit, he is
attractive to women but wary of them and of all entanglements. Though cynical and hard boiled, and a
heavy drinker capable of violence, Marlowe is idealistic, even puritanical. Contemptuous of money, he

Through viewing scenes where Marlowe is beaten up and tied up by Mars men, we come to realize the
strength of Marlowe s integrity and will. Although he is put through much physical pain as well as the
mental pain of witnessing horrific acts, he bites the bullet and commits himself completely to the tasks
placed before him. Once again, he does not do his task for the small amounts of money, but he does it
because he feels it is what he must do.

received the award in 1997 and Office Depot, Inc. in 1998, Staples, Inc. clearly has a competence
advantage among its competitors. Therefore, the company s customer service is another distinctive
competence. Weaknesses A major weakness for Staples, Inc. is their high dependence on the North
American Market. Since the North American Market has weakened due to the regression the company
s dependence could prove to be rather damaging. For the fiscal quarter ended Aug. 2, 2008, the
Framingham, Mass., office supplies retailer said sales grew about 3% from a year ago while its
earnings per share decreased about 15% (Hinton, 2008). Staples, Inc. has been involved in many legal
issues which is another weakness. Most recently Staples, Inc. reached a settlement in wage and hour
class action lawsuits. Staples, Inc. announced that it has reached a global settlement in several retail
wage and hour class action lawsuits related to the alleged misclassification of its assistant store
managers concerning overtime pay. According to a former assistant manager, who worked with the
company from December 2003 to October 2005, the Assistant Managers were working 50 hour work
weeks, with 1 hour lunch breaks (Steward, 2010). This amounted to 5 overtime hours per week that
they weren t getting paid for. Under the terms of the global settlement, which is subject to court
approval, the Company has agreed to pay $42 million to resolve the allegations and avoid further

Claude Mckay America
America by Claude Mckay is a poem and also a sonnet. Most sonnets in the time of Williams
Shakespeare were always about a person feelings towards something and that s exactly what he did.
He wrote about the feelings he has towards America. According to a biography I read about Claude
Mckay, he was a Jamaican who immigrated to the United States. He was a poet and was inspired to
write several poems in New York. It started off stating, Although she feeds me bread of bitterness, And
sinks into my throat her tiger s tooth. He mentions how America is a Her, in other words, comparing
America to a woman like a motherly figure. Those first two stances meant disgust towards America
and also expresses his dependence on the country as well. Throughout

The purpose of this study is comparing the effects of Red Bull and a non caffeinated drink with
endurance cycling TT performance. The hypothesis of this experiment is that the Red Bull and the non
caffeinated drink will improve the performance between each trial compared to the placebo. There
were 12 subjects, but one withdrew from the experiment due to stomach problems. The 11 participants
are male, age between 25 37 years old, no height represented, weighing between 76 88 kg and the
participant was a cyclist or athlete. Each participant went to the laboratory 6 different times. The first

Also, the participants didn t drink any alcohol or do strenuous exercise before each trial. The TT (time
trial) improved for both caffeine and Red Bull compared to the placebo. The caffeine was .043 and
Red Bull was .039. The average of TT times also improved for caffeine, Red Bull and placebo. The
caffeine improved by 3.1% between 120 to 292 seconds. The Red Bull improved by 2.8% between
109 to 262 seconds. The trend of HR, RPE, and quadriceps muscle pain increased rapidly. The average
HR for caffeine vs. placebo was .068. The average HR for Red Bull vs. placebo was .086. The amount
of leg pain with caffeine vs. placebo was .085. The amount of leg pain with Red Bull vs. placebo was
.052. The HR value and amount of leg pain values failed to reach the amount of statistical
significance. The gastric discomfort had a rating greater than 5 on a scale of 10 from 2 participants
from ingesting Red Bull. The participants said the pain was very sharp feeling nauseated. The rest of
the participants has a minor discomfort from the experiment less than 3 on a scale of 10. The plasma
caffeine and glucose wasn t different between all 3 different conditions with caffeine, Red Bull and
placebo. The participants were blinded and couldn t guess the order of which each variable was given
to the participant during the experiment. Only 1 participant guessed the right order of how each
variable was given through the trial. The results of the experiment was to compare the effects of Red
Bull with an equal amount of caffeine with TT endurance cycling performance. The hypothesis was
proven right that the Red Bull and the non caffeinated drink did improve the participant s performance
compared to the placebo containing Gatorade and carbonated water. The results also vary that the

College Go To College Essay
College Is the Best Thing You Can Do for Yourself
Many high school seniors choose to go to college over getting a job. They all make this decision with
the belief that it will be more beneficial in the end. With this hope in mind, students are willing to pay
thousands of dollars anticipating that it will have a greater payoff in the end. Although many people
oppose this theory, students worldwide are willing to take the chance. Attending school for a couple
more years is well worth it. With the goal of overall security and eradication of financial stress,
attending college is more likely to foster success in the end. College teaches young adults valuable life
lessons that benefit them in the future. The biggest lesson college taught me is that I m fully
responsible for everything that happens to me says Benjamin Houy (Brooks 1), meaning that your
professors will not make sure you are in class and getting your work done on time. At the same time,
you will learn how to take charge of your own learning. Most of the time in college, the answers do
not come easily, you ll have plenty of opportunities trying to find a way to acquire the skills you need
to turn your dreams into a reality (Brooks 1). While attending college, you will be gaining knowledge
on tasks like budgeting, multi tasking, note taking, and working with others. As these lessons are not
taught in courses (Hoyt 1), they are learned throughout your experiences during your time on campus.
If you don t worry about yourself in college, nobody else is going to do it for you states Elizabeth
Hoyt, explaining how you need to take care of yourself and become independent. These skills become
especially useful in the workplace when you will have to work together with co workers to get an
assignment done for your employer. College has the ability to change a person s life in many positive
ways. Each year you attend college, the higher your annual salary becomes. Rachel Beckstead
explains how adults with a high school diploma earn $35,256 while those who obtained a master s
degree earn an average of $69,732. Nearly double than if you ended your education after high school.
As going to college open doors, you can increase your job options simply by

The Capitalist-Free Market
There are many differences between a capitalist free market and socialist economy. But one of the
most prominent differences that I noticed was that in a socialist economy is that most major
businesses are owned by the government so that the profits can be more evenly redistributed to the
public. The capitalist free market allows private ownership of major businesses. The profits in this
market are kept by the owners and shareholders of the company and not redistributed. The capitalist
free market allows the right to own private property; the right to own a business and keep those profits
from that business. This type of market also promotes the freedom of competition between businesses
for innovations, efficiency, and price.

Comparison Of The Human Rights Act 1998 And Tort Law
The Human Rights Act 1998 and Tort Law are seen to be together in overlapping ways as François du
Bois explains. In this essay we will begin by looking at the introduction of the Human Rights Act, and
the claims in negligence against public authorities. Then we will look at the different views as to the
remedies, whether Tort law and the Human Rights Act, should be used together and developed
together, or should be used separately in a claim in negligence against a public authority.
The introduction of the Human Rights Act 1998, as Oliphant and Lunney describes it creates a new
statutory remedy against public authorities for violating of the specified Convention rights . Section 7
of the act requires that any individual that brings a claim against public authorities must be a victim. A
victim under the Human Rights Act refers to the person who could bring a case under the ECHR.
Victims must be directly affected or be at risk of being directly affected by the act in questions.
Victims can include...relatives of the victim where a complaint is made about death. . An example of
this would be the case of Rabone v Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust in which Melanie had in the
past attempted to commit suicide on several occasions. After the most recent attempt she was admitted
to the hospital where they observed and tested her. Two days after, she was released for two days
home visit despite her tests indicating her being at high risk of attempting suicide again, which is

Humanity s Lingua Franca
Humanity s Lingua Franca
My former choir director once stated that singing made one more vulnerable than even being nude.
Because really the act of singing is like that of cutting yourself open, and giving people a piece of you
through a concoction of air and honed muscle coordination, oscillating to a degree that could be
physically felt by others. This human connection offered by the art form is primarily physical. Every
song heard be it live or recorded is a physical manifestation of someone s physical self. This is how
music in literal terms can touch people. Through my training in music I have left a physical mark on
people singing everywhere from Carnegie Hall s Stern Auditorium to the Hochschule für Musik

out of the dark hole that we have been sitting in these past few years. He is the man with the plan and

Persuasive Essay On Head Start
Head Start Programs:
All Children Deserve the Same Chance at an Education Head Start programs came about in 1964;
when President Johnson declared a war on poverty. His idea was you must break the cycle of poverty
to win the war. The program s idea was to help break the cycle of poverty by, providing the children of
low income families the ability to meet the emotional, social, health, nutrition, and mental needs. The
Parents also are offered resources in higher education, paying utilities, and other needs that are
essential to succeed. According to The Basic Head Start Facts Sheet 2011, Head Start is the nation s
first national early education and early childcare program. Since then over thirty two million children
have had assistance with the program; therefore, has caused an increase of twenty eight percent in
High School Graduations (Smith 8). Head Starts main goal is to lower the achievement gap between
lower class and middle class children.
Being born in poverty and the disadvantages Smith states that children who are born into poverty
already have a disadvantage. The journal Why Investments in Early Childhood work, 2011, shows that
these children are twenty five percent more likely to drop out of school, forty percent more likely to
become a teen parent, and seventy percent more likely to commit a violent crime in their life.
Therefore, the cycle needs to end. We need to educate ourselves so our children can succeed, and live
a better life than we had. Abbott Shim

Yokuts California Case Study
The Yokuts: A California Case Study
The Yokuts inhabited the San Joaquin valley in California. There were over 40 independent groups
and each of them had a distinct name, dialect and territory. The San Joaquin Valley is bounded by
mountains on the east, west and south and to the north flow the Kern and San Joaquin rivers into the
ocean. The climate in the valley is hot with dry mild summers, semiarid winters and very minimal
precipitation. Originally, the area was rich in a network of rivers, streams, lakes and sloughs fed by
waters from Sierra Nevada to the east and it is very productive and rich in resources such as food,
wood for construction, firewood and manufacturing tools. After these rivers and streams were diverted
for agricultural purposes, the valley dried up and became a vast area of farmland. The foothills
elevations are higher and cooler and are occupied by some Yokuts groups. They managed their
environment both passively and actively to improve forage for deer, eliminate underbrush growth,
make it easy to traverse, and for hunters as well. Passively, they did religious ceremonies to ensure the
continuation of favorable conditions.
The Yokuts spoke the Penutian language but each mini tribe spoke a different dialect. The earliest
recorded contact with the Europeans was when the Spanish came looking or renegade soldiers.
Spanish expeditions to the San Joaquin took Yokuts to missions but then the United States seized
California from Mexico and the territory got

The Road Movie In Outer Space Analysis
In the two essays presented, Genre, Gender, and Hysteria, The Road Movie in Outer Space by Tim
Corrigan and Steven Cohan s The Road Movie Book Introduction, concepts of the beginning of the
road movie genre, how it related to social and political environments of the time a movie was made,
and changes in the style of protagonist are discussed and examined equally but differently. Road films
have been part of American films from the beginning of Hollywood movies. Their categories have
included action adventure, comedies, crime, dramas, gangster, and westerns films. Road films have
also expanded their popularity from the outback of Australia, as we ve seen in Beneath Clouds, Rabbit
Proof Fence and The Adventures of Pricilla, Queen of the Desert. The common theme present is a
journey on the open road, searching for an escape of the life they lead, and reaching a goal while
following the personal development of the characters during the journey. The appeal for the
international community with this genre of movies comes with the portrayal of experimentation and
innovation. This is further enhanced by the perception that Americans are a nation of dreamers and
women are free spirited. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

through current times. The nature of American society is brought to light through the presentation of a

The History Of Social Work
The history of social work demonstrates how statutory and voluntary agencies adapted to the changing
social conditions and increasing societal problems as a result of influence of industrialization and
urbanization (Red). Social and economic changes such as the Black Death that severed the British
populations, the closure of common land for self profit in the 1530s, and unrest and riots during the
1700s left many people in need alone and without care from their families (lecture). Industrialization
and urbanization created a widespread movement toward cities, separation over wealth and classes,
and caused challenges which established systems of care could not longer cope with (lecture). During
the late 16th century, the population in the United Kingdom increased by 25% and widespread famine
contributed to the increasing poverty rate, which called for a new system of help for the poor (black).
Over almost a 400 year period, poor laws were established in the United Kingdom to provide
systematic help for those facing poverty.
Within the United Kingdom, there was a division of approaches to address rising social problems
(lecture). England and Whales created the Elizabethan Poor Law Act of 1601 to classify the poor into
categories and allocate responsibility of care and control for these classifications. The poor law
separated those who could not work versus those who would not work in three ways: the impotent
poor , the aged, chronically sick, or mentally ill; the able bodied poor , those who could work but didn
t; and the able bodied poor who absconded or refused work (red). The impotent poor were housed in
voluntary institutions under the care of parishes and churches whereas the able bodied poor were sent
to statutory workhouses or house of correction punishment facilities (red). The Poor Law Act of 1601
sought to make a distinction between individuals who were poor by no fault of their own and
individuals who were to blame for there poverty, and thus putting them in the care of either the state or
private sectors (red).
Workhouses were some of the most inhumane aspects of history and a dark space in the public
imagination (red). Under public authority, these institutions had harsh conditions,

In order to develop and establish in vitro human spermatogenesis models, we need to build up an
unlimited source of human spermatogonia stem cells (SSCs). Human SSCs are a unique population of
cells in postnatal mammals that undergo self renewal. SSCs are rare in the testis, constituting around 1
in 3 000 4 000 testicular cells. It is difficult to obtain enough SSCs to serve for the toxicity testing
from biopsy of human testis. The rapid progress in stem cell research has opened a new era for
exploring human spermatogenesis. Mouse ESCs, nonhuman primate (NHP) ESCs, and hESCs have
been differentiated into primordial germ cells (PGCs) and fetal precursors of the spermatogenic
lineage [50 61]. hiPSCs can enter meiosis and in some cases produce haploid products in vitro [55, 56,
60, 62, 63]. hESCs and hiPSCs are reported to differentiate directly into advanced male spermatogenic
lineages in vitro [56, 62, 64 66]. However, the efficiency of generation of the human SSCs is still quite
low and different among the reports. The discovery of the method to generate human SCCs from
hiPSCs in a high efficiency will open up the possibility to provide an unlimited source of human
SSCs, which can be used to construct in vitro model for reproductive toxicity testing. Therefore, in
this proposal, we will use High Content Analysis (HCA) to optimize the culture condition to improve
the efficacy of differentiating hESCs to human SSCs, and apply these cells to develop an integrated
pathway based high throughput (HT)/high content analysis (HCA) for reproductive toxicity

Julie Andrews, James Earl Jones, And Jim Parsons
If one would to ask you how Julie Andrews, James Earl Jones, and Jim Parsons have anything in
common, the simplest answer besides them all having a name that start with a J, is that they re among
the many actors and actresses that enjoy successful careers both on stage and on screen. Although film
acting differs from stage acting, the practice can still equip an actor to excel at both. But the point at
hand is still at question, just how do these two different forms of entertainment both come together
with their similarities, but yet separate when it comes to their differences?
Well, for starters, The biggest difference between acting for stage versus acting for screen is the
location of the audience. In a theatre, the stage tends to be far away from the audience. Depending on
the size of the theatre, the actors need to exaggerate their facial expressions and gestures so even the
people towards the back of the theatre can see what s going on. For example, actors cannot express
sadness with just a single tear onstage, since only the audience members closest to the stage will see it,
leaving everyone else in a world of confusion as to what is going on right in front of them.
When acting on screen, however, the camera can get extremely close to the actor, which closes the gap
between the audience and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

lines are memorized. Depending on the show or production budget, microphones may or may not be
used during a performance. Even with a microphone, actors must practice and perform their lines
accurately each time, with crisp diction and clear enunciation. In musicals, actors must get their notes
and lyrics correct on the first try. There are no do overs during a live theatre

The Legend Of Atlantis By Plato
Atlantis The legend of Atlantis was first introduced to the world at approximately 360 BC, by the
ancient Greek philosopher Plato in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias who hear of the legend from
Greek lawmaker Solon who was told of the tale by Egyptian priests during his visit to Egypt. In his
dialogues, Plato describes an affluent and powerful nation which arose directly from the Greek God of
the Sea, Poseidon. However, their opulence ceased as they became too greedy, wicked and impious
which led the Gods to destroy Atlantis. Since the legend of Atlantis s debut into the world, it has long
captivated many due to the ongoing possibility of the existence of the island. Despite its popularity,
difficulties arise in determining the truth in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Plato writes, The entire area was densely crowded with habitations; and the canal and the largest of the
harbors were full of vessels and merchants coming from all parts (cited in Donnelly, 1882, p.14).
Although it is commonly believed that Plato s writing in regards to Atlantis is a myth, his writing
about Atlantis shows a clear correlation with the Minoan civilisation. This is evidenced in the ship
procession fresco (cited in Cartwright, 2014), a contemporary source artifact from an excavated
Minoan settlement, which illustrates numerous ships along the harbor, where fishing and trading is
occurring among crowds. The artifact shows a strong connection between Plato s description of the
life and bustle of Atlantis as both civilisations have a strong trade network and vessels and populous.
Due to the remarkable detailing and intricacy of the features displayed on the artifact, it suggests that
the scene must have actually been viewed to be painted with such description. Not only does the
artifact confirm the Minoans vast trading skills and match Plato s description of Atlantis, but it is also
going to show how clever and advanced they were as a civilisation which further validates the
civilisations resemblances with Atlantis. Oft cited author Rodney Castledon (1998, p. 82) in his widely
admired book, Atlantis Destroyed, he asserts, The Minoans left a rich collection of eloquent images.

Persuasive Speech On Whale Captivity
How would you feel if you were a killer whale performing in front of thousands of people? For many
years people have argued if killer whales should be kept in captivity or not. Blackfish, a documentary

captivity must be banned because whales can get ill or injured, they can be dangerous to humans, and
they can get separated from their families. Killer whales captivity is a major issue because they could
become sick or injured there. According to Blackfish, orca whales in captivity tend to become hyper
aggressive towards new whales. This results in whale on whale incidents where the whales can get
severely injured, or can even die. Some examples of these incidents, as The Dodo has said, are a male
whale named Nakai had his chin torn off in a fight. Additionally, a female whale named Kandu broke
her own jaw and cut her artery in a fight, eventually bleeding to death. Her calf was circling around
her during the event. In addition, the Huffington Post states, animals may suffer from captivity related
stresses that lower their resistance and make them more susceptible to disease, making lifespans in
captivity significantly lower than in the wild. To add on, The Dodo states, One big issue was the
terrible state of the orcas teeth. Captive orcas are already at risk for dental trauma bored and stressed,
they often begin gnawing on the edges of their tanks. They also state that these occurrences in the wild
are very rare. Also, whales like Tilikum got a lung infection due to bacterial pneumonia, which is the
most common reason why captive whales and dolphins die (according to Wikipedia). Tilikum had also
died due to the disease. This indicates that whale captivity leads to many incidents and diseases that
the whales would not have faced in the wild. All these problems are caused due to them being captive.
Orca captivity is also dangerous for human beings. For example, Tilikum was the cause of the death of
3 people as shown in Blackfish. First, he and 2 other whales drowned Keltie Byrne, who had slipped
into the pool. She was screaming and tried to escape, but the whales pulled her back and drowned her.

The Use of Language in A Fable for Tomorrow by Rachel Carson
The Use of Language in A Fable for Tomorrow by Rachel Carson
The extracts give the impression of stark contrast, even contradictions, from the very beginning. The
author chooses to use the word fable in the title, which, traditionally, is something fictional and also
usually refers to the past and yet this is coupled with
tomorrow . This indicates that the author is looking to show the reader that, although the situation she
refers to in the second extract may not be factual in its entirety, it may not be long before it is.
Carson uses graphical descriptions to convey the idea of harmony and peacefulness in the first
paragraph white clouds of bloom drifted above the green fields . The author uses all of the senses to ...

Carson s tone changes dramatically from the first sentence of the second extract. The words strange
blight invoke a sense of fear and foreboding. The bleakness of the second extract is even starker in
comparison to the light and sensory pleasing first. The author invokes a feeling of inhumanness with
phrases such as evil spell and
mysterious maladies . Carson gives the impression that the deaths and sickness is widespread when
she refers to flocks of chicken and
much illness . She also gives us information that indicates that the situation has affected the whole
town, both animal and human, adult and child. This only adds to the darkness and desolation of the
second extract. When Carson refers to children playing then dying she gives us the impression of
innocence dying with them. The author also strengthens the impression of unnaturalness with her
reference to the birds no longer being able to fly. This sounds crueller when in the first extract Carson
describes the birds as countless .
In the final paragraph the author explains the purpose of the extracts and why she wrote them. She
makes clear that although she is not aware of any one town experiencing the full list of horrors she
described, it is a reasonable assumption that it will happen in the near future if nothing is done to
prevent it. Carson leaves the reader in no doubt as to the validity of her

How Did Nicholas Sarkozy Ban The Construction Of More...
Amidst the furore instigated by the Swiss minaret referendum in 2009 (Migration Policy Institute,
2009), former French president Nicolas Sarkozy voiced his sympathy and his understanding for the
collective decision to ban the construction of more minarets within Switzerland through an article
titled Respecter ceux qui arrivent, respecter ceux qui accueillent (Sarkozy, 2009b). Sarkozy s article
first appeared in the December 8th publication of Le Monde a French daily newspaper in 2009, and
was subsequently edited and translated by The Guardian, an English news agency based in the United
Kingdom (Sarkozy, 2009a). It is of importance to note that this discourse is based on the translated
(English) version of Sarkozy s article. Given the nature of translations, expressions and connotations
from the original commentary may be altered and hence, discrepancies may arise. ... Show more

cause of the Swiss minaret vote, the opposition and their perspective, the image and lives of Muslims

Gideon V. Mono-Mar Homes Inc. Summary
INTRODUCTION Plaintiffs have moved to dismiss their action against the Defendants under K.S.A
60 241(b). Defendants have opposed this motion because they feel it would be unfair to them because
1) it would not settle the issues in the case, 2) it would deny the Defendants further discovery, and 3) it
represents only a partial dismissal of the case because the Court would maintain the protective order.
This memo is divided in two main parts. The first part discusses both dismissals without and with
prejudice and considers the advantages and disadvantages of both. To choose, which to go with the
main question will be balancing the risk of the Court imposing expenses as a condition of dismissal

Kansas courts have imposed expenses as a condition for dismissal in the past. Peterson v. Garney
Const. Co., 2 Kan. App. 2d 587, 588, 584 P.2d 1269, 1271 (1978). In Peterson, the Supreme Court
upheld an imposition of expenses because the Plaintiff sought dismissal right before the trial began
and because it was clear the Plaintiff wished to re file the case. Id. Kansas courts have been clear that
imposing expenses must be connected to the risk of future litigation and if there is not such a risk then
courts should not impose expenses. Brown v. Zackert, 10 Kan. App. 2d 466, 469, 701 P.2d 711, 714
(1985). Courts also normally do not impose expenses if the expenses such as discovery costs would be
useable in future lawsuits as courts consider these costs to not be a waste. Smith v. Orthopaedic
Surgery Associates, P.A., 237 Kan. 546, 550, 701 P.2d 331, 335 (1985). It should be noted that I was
only able to find three Kansas cases were expenses were a condition of a dismissal and so it somewhat
unclear how often courts place this condition on dismissals. The Federal Circuits are also unclear on
this subject with some circuits holding that there is a presumption in favor of expenses, while others
have been more restrictive in their use of this condition. See Belle Midwest, Inc. v. Missouri Prop.

Studio Shaft Essay
What made Shaft different? What really sets studio Shaft apart from others is its director Akiyuki

imaginative style to all of his, and subsequently Shaft s work. The big things Shinbo does different
then other studios is first off what he chooses to create. While the studio realizes heavily on original
anime which boosted success as discussed below in advertising, the works they adapt into anime are
carefully chosen. They are not always popular by themselves, and are not aimed at very broad
audiences. In fact they are all aimed at very niche audiences, such as Bakemonogatari which was
aimed towards to teenage boys. This creates a basis for a dedicated audience, willing to purchase
merchandise of the anime. Shaft also with Shinbo s unique art style is incredibly recognizable. Every
show they produce follow a set style of how the backgrounds are focused on more than most anime, or
the way in which characters move that isn t always humanoid.

Strategic Leadership And Different Levels Of Business...
1.0 Strategic Leadership Styles
Strategy is the direction and scope of an organisation over the long term: which achieves advantage
for the organisation through its configuration of resources within a challenging environment, to meet
the needs of markets and to fulfill stakeholder expectations . (Johnson and Scholes, 1999)
1.1 Strategic leadership is demonstrated when a leader knows effective efficient leverage of Strategic

Themes of Hopelessness in Herman Melville’s Bartleby the...
We can never be one hundred percent certain of the validity of our literary analyses. This is especially
the case with Herman Melville s Bartleby the Scrivener . Critics have been trying for decades to make
sense of the text and most will describe it as inscrutable . I don t claim to know better than the critics,
but instead offer my own interpretation of the work. Based on my observations and analysis, Melville
s use of many elements in his story first and foremost the character of Bartleby, but also the dead
letters, the many walls of Wall Street, and the state of Wall Street itself works well to develop a sense
of hopelessness, whether intentional or not, in the story as well as the narrator and consequently the
reader. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He [the lawyer] refers to Turkey as a most valuable person to me (p. 22) and to Nippers as a very
useful man to me (p. 25). Even Ginger Nut, the office boy, is useful in that his duty as cake and apple
purveyor (p. 27) pacifies Turkey and Nippers and thus keeps them working. In other words, the lawyer
considers his employees useful insofar as he can exploit them and make money from their labor.
(Wilson)
Bartleby, however, who prefers not to do any work after a short period of working in the office,
greatly discourages the lawyer because he does not prove useful in any way.
As a further character development, Melville encourages the reader to consider Bartleby himself as a
type of dead letter (Weinstock). Bartleby doesn t serve the purpose he intended to when he refuses to
do work, in the same way the dead letters (1111) that Bartleby used to work with did not serve the
function they were intended for. It is important to note that in a dead letter office, the letters are
undeliverable and so they have their content destroyed. Bartleby would prefer not to do anything and
thus wasted away to death a drawn out process of content destruction. In this case the content refers to
Bartleby s soul (1098) and hope, and eventually, self.
We can expect that the lawyer s prolonged exposure to an attitude such

Maternal effects on egg investment and offspring performance in black widow spiders. Animal
Behaviour, 91, 67 73.
Q.1 The study addressed questions like what effects maternal foraging success would have on
maternal body condition, fecundity, egg investment and whether an abundance in prey for the mother
would have positive effects on offspring traits like shapes maternal body condition, fecundity and egg
investment, and that maternal prey abundance has a positive, cross generational effect on a number of
important offspring traits, for example, sibling cannibalism in black widow spiders.
Q.2 The findings of this study include the knowledge that maternal foraging success is indeed
responsible for better maternal body condition, egg sac mass, egg number, mass, size and density rate.
Some exceptions were also observed where the mothers given the high nutrition treatment made low
density eggs and some given low nutrition treatment made high density eggs, showing that these
characters are also influenced by genetic traits of the individual. Sibling cannibalism is also seen
shown to be fitness related, genetically effected trait.
Q.3 The experiment consisted of manipulating the food intake of black widow spider mothers, a high
nutrition and a low nutrition diet were used. Eighteen penultimate stage juvenile black widow spiders

How To Write A Descriptive Essay On Malabar Farm
Mount Jeez overlooks the Malabar Farm and much of the Pleasant Valley. In its actuality it really is

Gossip Girl And Jane Austen s Pride And Prejudice
Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice tells the story of the agonizing romance between Elizabeth Bennet
and Fitzwilliam Darcy. In eighteenth century class conscious England, wealthy families married for
money and a stable reputation. Many critics argue that people no longer marry for money but instead
for love. However, sugar mommies, daddies, and babies are more prevalent in the twenty first century
than is publicly shown. Cecily von Ziegesar s Gossip Girl, originally chick literature turned major
drama television series, portrays the romantic struggles of Manhattan s East Side upper class. Despite
being set in the twenty first century, Gossip Girl is arguably a more dramatic, high quality adaptation
of Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice. Gossip Girl, an American television drama, had six seasons, all
told by the narrator Gossip Girl. Gossip Girl runs a highly popular blog that gives the Upper East Side
adolescents little to no privacy. Serena van der Woodsen, one of the main characters, had just returned
to Manhattan for high school classes at the Constance Billard School for Girls and St. Jude s School

Islam In America Analysis
According to the book Islam in America by Johnathan Curiel, one can find evidence that the story of

About 20% of African slaves that were brought to America were Muslims. During this early times in
the country, the number of Muslims is estimated to be around 25,000 but were forced by their owners
to convert to Christianity. (Curiel, 2015) Though many Muslim slaves, showed that they had
converted, many still held on to their faith in Islam. As the number of Slaves increased from 250,000
to 500,000, it is estimated that the number of Muslims increased. (Curiel, 2015) Through the time of
denial of Islam, the Muslims held on and followed their faith and continued to pass down their faith to
family. This continued for many years, until the 1890 s when white American Muslims began to
change the role of Islam in the United States. This turning point at such a crucial time for the religion,
helped Islam spread throughout the country. Alexander Webb proclaimed himself as missionary, and
spent his time campaigning throughout the country, speaking about the religion, the building of
mosques and more during a time that people believed Islam to be an adversary. (Curiel, 2015)

Causes, And The Cause And Effect Of The Outsiders
Conare Lucas 11/1/17
Prof Philip Titan Cause and Effect Essay
When people first start reading a book there is one burning question: What is this story about? It s a
heavy question, especially for a fiction novel with so many fabricated details. You can fix this by
saying a story is all about decisions. Of course, there are other themes, but the entire story is
connected by the questions characters ask themselves and the outcome of their own answers. We can
think about how this mimics real life. How every day we are forced to consider life s chance
situations; some casual, some pressing, but all of them impacting our final growth as people and those
around us to some degree. A good example of this is when in the book The Outsiders , our protagonist
Jonny decided to kill Bob in self defense, this resulted in Jonny and Ponyboy going on the run. The
decisions, the choices, that were made by Jonny change the course of his and his cohort s entire lives
in an instant directing the whole final tale and story outcome.
In the book the outsiders Ponyboy and many other characters have to make questionable decisions. A
good example of this is, Ponyboy s choice to walk might bring up questions. Why does Pony boy walk
home alone, even though he knows it s not safe? Is he just making a foolish choice? Is he

These products also form part of different collections that provide a unique benefit to its users, and
they overlap within these product categories, these include Prox, Regenerist, Total Effects, Fresh
Effects, Complete and Classics. They are shown in Appendix A3 and form part of the brand portfolio.
For example, ProX which is intended for tackling root causes of aging has products in Cleansers,
Moisturizer and Treatment. Likewise, most of their collections overlap in products with different
categories. Another relationship, particularly for the Body product category, is the scent in the product.
For instance, the Orchid scent is available in Bar Soap, Body Lotion and Body wash. Similarly, there
are other scents available in these subcategories.
The portfolio graphics in Appendix B explain Olay s visual representation across four different
products. In general the Olay brand is visible in the graphics, however, its collection of ProX appears
to have a bigger visual representation in its packaging. The colors, layout, and typeface are specific

The portfolio role for Olay from a P G perspective can be described as a cash cow. As Olay is a market

Eventually seeing the torment against White, an officer and six privates came to Private White s aid.
There was a rule about how the soldiers were only allowed to fire if and only if the crowd had not
dispersed within an hour. They loaded their weapons and positioned themselves in a defensive form.
The mob grew to over 300 angry colonists. In the mob of angry colonist there was confusion, some
soldiers though that they had heard the command to fire and followed through. When a British soldier,
was struck and hit by an object thrown by one of the colonists, he fired his weapon into the crowd.
Several other British troops followed his actions, before the massacre came to an end and the crowd
dispersed. Captain Thomas Preston was the British officer in charge on the day. He insisted that he
never gave the order for his troops to fire their guns. Yet at some point, they fired their guns, and the
deaths and injuries mounted. It was Preston who ended the shooting. (Boston Massacre Facts)
(Wallenfeldt) (White)
Not long after, Preston and the seven soldiers that he led were under arrest. The sentry who they had
went to rescue was under arrest as well. A town meeting the next morning had produced a demand for
the removal of all the troops, and by March 11 both the 14th. Fearing for their safety, customs
commissioners had left town. Various conflictions had delayed the soldier s trials for months. In the
provisional, both sides of the clash attempted to

Scottish Genealogy Research
One of the more underused, and perhaps misunderstood, resources for Scottish genealogy research is
the National Library of Scotland. This amazing library has a wealth of genealogical information in
formats you may have never even considered.
The NLS is a national deposit library, it is not a lending library. The library has many records which
were in private collections, including estate papers, family histories, papers and records from a variety
of industries and manufacturers, newspapers for the whole of Scotland, official government records
(Commission reports, etc.) to name just a few. Let s have a look at what the NLS has on offer:

These were one page news reports pertaining to the top stories of the day. They were often posted on
market stalls, mercat crosses, and town walls. They tended to deal with the scandals and salacious
details of the events which were making news and being talked about in the street, in pubs and in
parlours or gossip circles. The digitized collection is available here: http://digital.nls.uk/broadsides/
For those whose ancestors were part of the Highland Clearances, the NLS has on deposit, the private
collection of the Sutherland Estate Papers, one part of which is a List of persons banished from the
Sutherland estate.
Other estate papers held by the NLS:
The Minto Papers (Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire, Fife and Angus)

Science Fair Project Research Report
Engineering Project Robert Lauv Period 3 Science Fair Project Research Report Magnification is one
of the world s greatest inventions. It made people learn about the creatures that are too small for the
human eye to see normally. But sometimes, the image given by magnification is unclear. And here is a
solution: colored magnifying lens. Colored glasses lens change the way people see, so why not
improvise and add that feature to magnifying glasses? (not saying to create prescription magnifying
glasses) One of the most basic tools for magnification is the magnifying glass, invented by Alhazen
and used for scientific studies by Roger Bacon. The magnifying glass is a tool used to make things
appear bigger. They are made of a convex lenses, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Resolution makes an item seem to be closer to the views another. Without resolution, the virtual world
would be confusing. Focal length is the distance from the point that light rays meet to the area the
virtual image is actually shown. The longer the focal length, the higher the magnification. The lower
the focal length, the lower the magnification. Magnification helps scientists learn about microscopic
life and things far away, which is why it s so important. A couple of things our planet learned about
using magnification are about how bacteria lives and the creatures that live with them, about the
planets, asteroids, and even galaxies. Magnification is one of the world s great discoveries. There is
nothing online about how colored lenses affects magnification, which is what this engineering project
is planned to be about (increasing one thing about magnification using colored lenses). But the
thought that the color of a convex lens could change something is the reason for continuing this
project. Okay, no that s a lie. The only reason for continuing this project instead of starting a new one
is the belief it s too late to change projects and the engineer of this project doesn t want to think

Genuine Teen Love
There are many things in this world that don t seem believable. One of them, is the number of cynical
people who don t believe in something that is so precious, but also crucial in * survival, the inner core
to the circle of life. Love! Especially teen love, or some people may know it as, love at first sight.
Love is everywhere. Love is all around *. Love occurs every moment each day. Everywhere * in
movies, in books, there is love. Love is always there, hidden beneath the words * read and the footage
* seen. Love, especially teen love should be considered the most genuine type of love out there, not
some profoundly tender, passionate affection to be abused * or ignored. Take the time to think of it
love starts when people are at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* By abandoning our family and friends, and detaching ourself from everyone who loves us to be with
the one in our heart it completely becomes worthwhile in the end. Eventually, our main priority will be
giving up life for them and be infinitely in love within two months. Teen love, is definitely the most
crucial type of love out there. Then there is the only work of Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, that
should be mostly read in class. It is the greatest love story of all time. Love at first sight, losing *
virginity at the age of 12 or 13, and dying for each other. Obviously the most romantic love story for
young kids to read, especially for teens. * Who cares about the values of life and the respect * one has
for themselves * unless it s your boyfriend who spends two whole months giving you the attention you
need. Coincidence that the affection of Romeo and Juliet, and Bella and Edward have for each other
began when they were teenagers? This goes to show how teen love is the most genuine, most true, and
pure of any kind of love out there. Also in class, let s just watch old animated Disney movies, like
Cinderella. She fell in love with a man after one romantic night of dancing and music, and then was
betrothed to him the very next day. This man just happened to be Prince Charming. Coincidence?
Prince Charming and Cinderella were devoted to each other by first sight and were teenagers already
planning to be hitched and married. This is a perfect example of teen

Kami Is Like Shintoism
Within all religions, there is a belief in beings that live around us and can have the means to answer
certain prayers. Kami is a term used in Shintoism as spirits that live closely with human beings, which
are anything out of the ordinary, awe inspiring, mysterious, powerful, marvelous, and beyond human
control or comprehension. (Brood 318) Kami is often associated with ancestors and loved ones who
have passed on from the world of the living or even evil being who wish to do harm to those still
living. Shintoism states that many of these Kami can have the power to not only alter human events
but can also influence natural forces. Kami when applied to spirits that live in things is a way to attach
a meaning to the word, but it also applies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shinto has no concept of sin, but rather it teaches that evil actions can contaminate individuals by
causing them to accrue impurities that poison innocence and offend the Kami. To rid one s self of
these impurities, Shintoism prescribes ritual washings in natural phenomena like a large source of
flowing water or salt. The symbolism of water recognizes that the purification process is letting the
person previous sins and acts of uncleanliness flow out of their soul and allowing the Kami, in this
case water spirit, to carry it away. The uses of salt could be applied to purify the land before any use
such as agriculture or construction of buildings. The rituals of purification do not apply to only
individuals and groups, but to the christening of new buildings and the start of a new business or a
change in government officials. A high priest, who calls out to the Kami, performs most rituals where
large groups are involved to request the Maiden of the Descent into the Current, Maiden of the Swift
Cleaning, the lord of the Breath blowing place, and the Maiden of Swift Banishment to wash away,
gulp down, blow away, and to abolish away the sins of the group to purify their minds and souls. (The

The Achievement Of The Millennium Development Goals
Electrification is widely believed to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs), based on the assumption that sustainable access to modern energy services fosters
economic and social development, and leads to improvements in the quality of life. Yet, particularly in
rural Sub Saharan Africa electrification rates are still low, as not far beyond 36 % (as of international
study) of the population use electricity. In rural Ethiopia, the electrification rate is even considerably
lower. As part of the efforts to achieve the MDGs it is among the national policy priorities of most
countries to improve access to electricity be it via extension of the national grid or decentralized
electricity. The national target for Ethiopia, for example, is to augment the overall electrification rate
to 90 % by 2015 a lot times the rate in 1998 E.C. The international donor community joins these
efforts and has increased its support to the energy sector in general and electrification projects in
particular. As part of these international Endeavours s, World Bank, Bank of Arab for Economic
Development in Africa (BADEA), the Kuwait Fund, African Development Bank (AFDB) and bilateral
cooperation from development partner countries like Indian Government envisages the sustainable
provision of access to modern energy for rural community within the country. Against this background
of increasing interestinrural electrification, it is crucial to obtain a more solid basis

Comparison of Las Meninas and Arnolfini Double Portrait...
Two of the most extensively analyzed works of art are Diego Velasquez s Las Meninas and Jan Van
Eyck s Arnolfini Double Portrait. Both of these artist s talent won them recognition not only during
their lifetime but after as well. Both Velasquez and Van Eyck have a justly earned title as the most
talented artists of their respective times. A detailed examination of the details and intricacies of these
artist s respective masterpieces, their similarities, and what sets them apart not just from each other but
from other paintings from their time period and style, will lead the viewer to a better understanding of
the mentalities of these gifted artists and how they transcend their respective genres and

The couple s outfits are thick and even have fur, although the painting suggests that it is spring or
summer, due to the amount of sunlight entering from the window and the fresh oranges (most oranges
are harvest during the spring). The furniture and the drapery is impressive, and the oranges themselves
are rare and are therefore a symbol of wealth. The painting also illustrates the relationship between the
two subjects through various objects. The painting suggests that the subjects are married. There is a
dog in between the couple, which represents loyalty. Both characters have rings on their ring fingers,
which suggests that they are both married. Also, the painting shows that both characters have removed
their shoes, which implies that they are standing on holy ground, such as Moses was when speaking to
god through a burning bush in the bible. The reason they are on holy ground is because a holy
ceremony has taken place, that is, a wedding. Notice the characters body language is composed of the
dominant husband and the submissive wife. There is also various references to the newlywed couple s
intentions of starting a family. Not only does the wife s attire exaggerate her belly, making her seem as
if she were pregnant, but behind here there is a statue of Saint Margaret, the saint of childbirth and
fertility. When the individual objects of this painting are viewed as a whole, the message becomes
clear. Jan van

Students Face A Different Education System
Welcome international students! It must be exciting to start your education in the U.S.A. Here students
face a different education system which may seem confusing at first due to the rules of avoiding
plagiarism. International students often find that the education system that they are used to has
different views on plagiarism compared to the U.S education system. As a result of this difference in
education systems, new students may unintentionally plagiarise. However, according to U.S
universities, a person commits plagiarism if they present the ideas or words of another person as their
own without proper recognition of the original author (Indiana University, 2005, Paragraph 2). When
international students don t understand the concept of plagiarism according to U.S universities, it is
difficult for them to study and work in the universities. However, it is possible to understand American
universities view towards plagiarism by understanding their outlook towards intellectual property, the
implications of committing plagiarism and its consequences. To understand the idea that American
institutes have about plagiarism, we need to first understand the American perspective about
intellectual property. In America, every person s intellectual work is their own property. When using
an author s idea or research findings from journals, books, articles, etc. their work has to be recognised
since it is their property. So proper recognition or credit, also known as citation should

Analysis Of The Clean Air Act ( Caa ) Essay
1. Introduction
Fairfax County, Virginia is located just west of Washington, DC (DC) and is considered part of the
Metropolitan Baltimore Washington Region. Located along the mid Atlantic coast, Fairfax County is a
temperate climate with four distinctive seasons and has an average of 42 inches of rain per year. Land
use in Fairfax County consists of a mix of commercial, residential, and industrial uses. As the
population continues to increase, available land area has decreased, which has contributing to urban
sprawl and decreased air quality (Fairfax County, 2014). With rapid growth in the county, the
transportation sectors have expanded increasing the amount of mobile sources for air pollution from
both within the county and from outside the county. Air quality in Fairfax County has been improving;
however, the county and the region have yet to meet federal air quality standards for 8 hour ozone and
particle matter.
2. Environmental Air Quality Issue
The Clean Air Act (CAA) was amended in 1990 to include the National Ambient Air Quality
Standards (NAAQS) for pollutants considered harmful to public health and the environment (U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], 2014). Fairfax County and the DC metropolitan area are
designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a moderate non attainment area for
the eight hour ozone standard established by the NAAQS (Fairfax County, 2014). In addition to non
attainment for ground level ozone, particle matter

The Law Of Conservation Of Energy
This is my Theory: God desires to be relational and recreate himself, but it can t be done because he
stands alone, omnipotent. So he continuously creates, hopefully lovingly, yet he continuously has to
substitute himself reproducing only himself again. Having beside him... nothing but God. This is why
he is praised forever and ever amen. But why he s sorry when he has to wipe out the face of the earth
with the flood during Noah s time is that he is sorry that nothing is like him. What an honest and
sincere claim for the God of the universe! Yet he strives to still create, loving his creations till
substitution (of himself). Because some of his creation had to be destroyed due to God s desire to be
relational, yet loathe of sin. God can not recreate himself (Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy can
neither be created nor destroyed). There is only one God. That is why there is the law of conservation
of energy the energy therein can neither be created nor destroyed.
This is what I believe. It happens to correlate with what author of engaging God s world Mr. Cornelius
Plantiga Jr. has to say. Plantiga, exclaims that love and hope are the two most pertinent things we long
for as humans/Christians. Is he right? Of course. Can anyone deny when our master Jesus spoke the
two most important commandments: to love the Lord your God with all your heart and to love your
neighbor as yourself? In doing these two things what comes to your life is one everlasting happiness
and two

  • 2. Persuasive Essay About Helicopter Parenting My parents gave me a choice, I could be free to experience and explore the internet, or I would be monitored and protected from everything I saw. As in my parents see what I see, and I see what they want me to see. Instinctively I took this as an insult, did they not trust me, was my mother trying to smother me? Truthfully, they were just trying to look out for me and try helicopter parenting, opposing from their usually lenient style of parenting. As we had a discussion on my presence on the internet, I began to be creeped out about the idea my parents were spying on me, so I told them they had nothing to worry about and that I would still be open to the idea of monitoring. After my talk with my parents, I wondered did other teens have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It certainly isn t required for good child learning. And to the extent that we do manage to solve all of our children s problems or keep those problems from ever even popping up we are doing rhwem a disservice. Not a fatal one that will stunt our children forever. But still, we are steering them away from the real source of confidence and independence, which comes comes from navigating the world and its surprises. Especially the unpleasant ones (Skenazy 92). For this reason many parents should advocate raising self reliant and responsible kids that learn from their mistakes and grow from them. Mistakes are wrong, but good for developing mindsets. In order to learn we must reflect on our mistakes which means always moving forward to bigger and better things, with this mindset we are driven to achieve. In this case, when parents let kids have more online privileges they are destined to fail one way or another which prepares them for the real world. This mentality lets kids have room for improvement when it comes to their online presence, they catch themselves doing the wrong thing and make a habit of doing the right thing. In her article, Trapped by Helicopter Parents , Danah Boyd maintains that: Rather than helping teens develop strategies for negotiating public life and the potential risks of interacting with others, fearful parents have focused on tracking, monitoring and blocking. These tactics don t help teens develop the skills they need to manage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Therefore, the company s customer service is another distinctive competence. Weaknesses A major weakness for Staples, Inc. is their high dependence on the North American Market. Since the North American Market has weakened due to the regression the company s dependence could prove to be rather damaging. For the fiscal quarter ended Aug. 2, 2008, the Framingham, Mass., office supplies retailer said sales grew about 3% from a year ago while its earnings per share decreased about 15% (Hinton, 2008). Staples, Inc. has been involved in many legal issues which is another weakness. Most recently Staples, Inc. reached a settlement in wage and hour class action lawsuits. Staples, Inc. announced that it has reached a global settlement in several retail wage and hour class action lawsuits related to the alleged misclassification of its assistant store managers concerning overtime pay. According to a former assistant manager, who worked with the company from December 2003 to October 2005, the Assistant Managers were working 50 hour work weeks, with 1 hour lunch breaks (Steward, 2010). This amounted to 5 overtime hours per week that they weren t getting paid for. • 8. College Go To College Essay College Is the Best Thing You Can Do for Yourself Many high school seniors choose to go to college over getting a job. They all make this decision with the belief that it will be more beneficial in the end. With this hope in mind, students are willing to pay thousands of dollars anticipating that it will have a greater payoff in the end. Although many people oppose this theory, students worldwide are willing to take the chance. Attending school for a couple more years is well worth it. With the goal of overall security and eradication of financial stress, attending college is more likely to foster success in the end. College teaches young adults valuable life lessons that benefit them in the future. The biggest lesson college taught me is that I m fully responsible for everything that happens to me says Benjamin Houy (Brooks 1), meaning that your professors will not make sure you are in class and getting your work done on time. At the same time, you will learn how to take charge of your own learning. Most of the time in college, the answers do not come easily, you ll have plenty of opportunities trying to find a way to acquire the skills you need to turn your dreams into a reality (Brooks 1). While attending college, you will be gaining knowledge on tasks like budgeting, multi tasking, note taking, and working with others. As these lessons are not taught in courses (Hoyt 1), they are learned throughout your experiences during your time on campus. If you don t worry about yourself in college, nobody else is going to do it for you states Elizabeth Hoyt, explaining how you need to take care of yourself and become independent. These skills become especially useful in the workplace when you will have to work together with co workers to get an assignment done for your employer. College has the ability to change a person s life in many positive ways. Each year you attend college, the higher your annual salary becomes. Rachel Beckstead explains how adults with a high school diploma earn $35,256 while those who obtained a master s degree earn an average of $69,732. But one of the most prominent differences that I noticed was that in a socialist economy is that most major businesses are owned by the government so that the profits can be more evenly redistributed to the public. The capitalist free market allows private ownership of major businesses. The profits in this market are kept by the owners and shareholders of the company and not redistributed. The capitalist free market allows the right to own private property; the right to own a business and keep those profits from that business. This type of market also promotes the freedom of competition between businesses for innovations, efficiency, and price. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Comparison Of The Human Rights Act 1998 And Tort Law The Human Rights Act 1998 and Tort Law are seen to be together in overlapping ways as François du Bois explains. In this essay we will begin by looking at the introduction of the Human Rights Act, and the claims in negligence against public authorities. Then we will look at the different views as to the remedies, whether Tort law and the Human Rights Act, should be used together and developed together, or should be used separately in a claim in negligence against a public authority. The introduction of the Human Rights Act 1998, as Oliphant and Lunney describes it creates a new statutory remedy against public authorities for violating of the specified Convention rights . Section 7 of the act requires that any individual that brings a claim against public authorities must be a victim. A victim under the Human Rights Act refers to the person who could bring a case under the ECHR. Victims must be directly affected or be at risk of being directly affected by the act in questions. Victims can include...relatives of the victim where a complaint is made about death. . An example of this would be the case of Rabone v Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust in which Melanie had in the past attempted to commit suicide on several occasions. Because really the act of singing is like that of cutting yourself open, and giving people a piece of you through a concoction of air and honed muscle coordination, oscillating to a degree that could be physically felt by others. This human connection offered by the art form is primarily physical. Every song heard be it live or recorded is a physical manifestation of someone s physical self. Persuasive Essay On Head Start Head Start Programs: All Children Deserve the Same Chance at an Education Head Start programs came about in 1964; when President Johnson declared a war on poverty. His idea was you must break the cycle of poverty to win the war. The program s idea was to help break the cycle of poverty by, providing the children of low income families the ability to meet the emotional, social, health, nutrition, and mental needs. The Parents also are offered resources in higher education, paying utilities, and other needs that are essential to succeed. According to The Basic Head Start Facts Sheet 2011, Head Start is the nation s first national early education and early childcare program. Since then over thirty two million children have had assistance with the program; therefore, has caused an increase of twenty eight percent in High School Graduations (Smith 8). Head Starts main goal is to lower the achievement gap between lower class and middle class children. Being born in poverty and the disadvantages Smith states that children who are born into poverty already have a disadvantage. The journal Why Investments in Early Childhood work, 2011, shows that these children are twenty five percent more likely to drop out of school, forty percent more likely to become a teen parent, and seventy percent more likely to commit a violent crime in their life. Therefore, the cycle needs to end. We need to educate ourselves so our children can succeed, and live a better life than we had. Abbott Shim ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Yokuts California Case Study The Yokuts: A California Case Study The Yokuts inhabited the San Joaquin valley in California. There were over 40 independent groups and each of them had a distinct name, dialect and territory. The San Joaquin Valley is bounded by mountains on the east, west and south and to the north flow the Kern and San Joaquin rivers into the ocean. The climate in the valley is hot with dry mild summers, semiarid winters and very minimal precipitation. Originally, the area was rich in a network of rivers, streams, lakes and sloughs fed by waters from Sierra Nevada to the east and it is very productive and rich in resources such as food, wood for construction, firewood and manufacturing tools. After these rivers and streams were diverted for agricultural purposes, the valley dried up and became a vast area of farmland. The foothills elevations are higher and cooler and are occupied by some Yokuts groups. They managed their environment both passively and actively to improve forage for deer, eliminate underbrush growth, make it easy to traverse, and for hunters as well. Passively, they did religious ceremonies to ensure the continuation of favorable conditions. The Yokuts spoke the Penutian language but each mini tribe spoke a different dialect. The earliest recorded contact with the Europeans was when the Spanish came looking or renegade soldiers. • 17. The Road Movie In Outer Space Analysis In the two essays presented, Genre, Gender, and Hysteria, The Road Movie in Outer Space by Tim Corrigan and Steven Cohan s The Road Movie Book Introduction, concepts of the beginning of the road movie genre, how it related to social and political environments of the time a movie was made, and changes in the style of protagonist are discussed and examined equally but differently. Road films have been part of American films from the beginning of Hollywood movies. Their categories have included action adventure, comedies, crime, dramas, gangster, and westerns films. Road films have also expanded their popularity from the outback of Australia, as we ve seen in Beneath Clouds, Rabbit Proof Fence and The Adventures of Pricilla, Queen of the Desert. The common theme present is a journey on the open road, searching for an escape of the life they lead, and reaching a goal while following the personal development of the characters during the journey. The appeal for the international community with this genre of movies comes with the portrayal of experimentation and innovation. This is further enhanced by the perception that Americans are a nation of dreamers and women are free spirited. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 18. The History Of Social Work The history of social work demonstrates how statutory and voluntary agencies adapted to the changing social conditions and increasing societal problems as a result of influence of industrialization and urbanization (Red). Social and economic changes such as the Black Death that severed the British populations, the closure of common land for self profit in the 1530s, and unrest and riots during the 1700s left many people in need alone and without care from their families (lecture). Industrialization and urbanization created a widespread movement toward cities, separation over wealth and classes, and caused challenges which established systems of care could not longer cope with (lecture). During the late 16th century, the population in the United Kingdom increased by 25% and widespread famine contributed to the increasing poverty rate, which called for a new system of help for the poor (black). Over almost a 400 year period, poor laws were established in the United Kingdom to provide systematic help for those facing poverty. Within the United Kingdom, there was a division of approaches to address rising social problems (lecture). England and Whales created the Elizabethan Poor Law Act of 1601 to classify the poor into categories and allocate responsibility of care and control for these classifications. The poor law separated those who could not work versus those who would not work in three ways: the impotent poor , the aged, chronically sick, or mentally ill; the able bodied poor , those who could work but didn t; and the able bodied poor who absconded or refused work (red). The impotent poor were housed in voluntary institutions under the care of parishes and churches whereas the able bodied poor were sent to statutory workhouses or house of correction punishment facilities (red). The Poor Law Act of 1601 sought to make a distinction between individuals who were poor by no fault of their own and individuals who were to blame for there poverty, and thus putting them in the care of either the state or private sectors (red). Workhouses were some of the most inhumane aspects of history and a dark space in the public imagination (red). Under public authority, these institutions had harsh conditions, ... In order to develop and establish in vitro human spermatogenesis models, we need to build up an unlimited source of human spermatogonia stem cells (SSCs). Human SSCs are a unique population of cells in postnatal mammals that undergo self renewal. SSCs are rare in the testis, constituting around 1 in 3 000 4 000 testicular cells. It is difficult to obtain enough SSCs to serve for the toxicity testing from biopsy of human testis. The rapid progress in stem cell research has opened a new era for exploring human spermatogenesis. Mouse ESCs, nonhuman primate (NHP) ESCs, and hESCs have been differentiated into primordial germ cells (PGCs) and fetal precursors of the spermatogenic lineage [50 61]. hiPSCs can enter meiosis and in some cases produce haploid products in vitro [55, 56, 60, 62, 63]. hESCs and hiPSCs are reported to differentiate directly into advanced male spermatogenic lineages in vitro [56, 62, 64 66]. However, the efficiency of generation of the human SSCs is still quite low and different among the reports. The discovery of the method to generate human SCCs from hiPSCs in a high efficiency will open up the possibility to provide an unlimited source of human SSCs, which can be used to construct in vitro model for reproductive toxicity testing. Therefore, in this proposal, we will use High Content Analysis (HCA) to optimize the culture condition to improve the efficacy of differentiating hESCs to human SSCs, and apply these cells to develop an integrated pathway based high throughput (HT)/high content analysis (HCA) for reproductive toxicity ... Julie Andrews, James Earl Jones, And Jim Parsons If one would to ask you how Julie Andrews, James Earl Jones, and Jim Parsons have anything in common, the simplest answer besides them all having a name that start with a J, is that they re among the many actors and actresses that enjoy successful careers both on stage and on screen. Although film acting differs from stage acting, the practice can still equip an actor to excel at both. But the point at hand is still at question, just how do these two different forms of entertainment both come together with their similarities, but yet separate when it comes to their differences? Well, for starters, The biggest difference between acting for stage versus acting for screen is the location of the audience. In a theatre, the stage tends to be far away from the audience. Depending on the size of the theatre, the actors need to exaggerate their facial expressions and gestures so even the people towards the back of the theatre can see what s going on. For example, actors cannot express sadness with just a single tear onstage, since only the audience members closest to the stage will see it, leaving everyone else in a world of confusion as to what is going on right in front of them. When acting on screen, however, the camera can get extremely close to the actor, which closes the gap between the audience and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Legend Of Atlantis By Plato Atlantis The legend of Atlantis was first introduced to the world at approximately 360 BC, by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias who hear of the legend from Greek lawmaker Solon who was told of the tale by Egyptian priests during his visit to Egypt. In his dialogues, Plato describes an affluent and powerful nation which arose directly from the Greek God of the Sea, Poseidon. However, their opulence ceased as they became too greedy, wicked and impious which led the Gods to destroy Atlantis. Plato writes, The entire area was densely crowded with habitations; and the canal and the largest of the harbors were full of vessels and merchants coming from all parts (cited in Donnelly, 1882, p.14). Although it is commonly believed that Plato s writing in regards to Atlantis is a myth, his writing about Atlantis shows a clear correlation with the Minoan civilisation. This is evidenced in the ship procession fresco (cited in Cartwright, 2014), a contemporary source artifact from an excavated Minoan settlement, which illustrates numerous ships along the harbor, where fishing and trading is occurring among crowds. The artifact shows a strong connection between Plato s description of the life and bustle of Atlantis as both civilisations have a strong trade network and vessels and populous. Due to the remarkable detailing and intricacy of the features displayed on the artifact, it suggests that the scene must have actually been viewed to be painted with such description. Not only does the artifact confirm the Minoans vast trading skills and match Plato s description of Atlantis, but it is also going to show how clever and advanced they were as a civilisation which further validates the civilisations resemblances with Atlantis. Oft cited author Rodney Castledon (1998, p. 82) in his widely admired book, Atlantis Destroyed, he asserts, The Minoans left a rich collection of eloquent images. The ... • 22. Persuasive Speech On Whale Captivity How would you feel if you were a killer whale performing in front of thousands of people? For many years people have argued if killer whales should be kept in captivity or not. Blackfish, a documentary on Seaworld and killer whales, had argued with Seaworld against whale captivity. Killer whale captivity must be banned because whales can get ill or injured, they can be dangerous to humans, and they can get separated from their families. Killer whales captivity is a major issue because they could become sick or injured there. According to Blackfish, orca whales in captivity tend to become hyper aggressive towards new whales. This results in whale on whale incidents where the whales can get severely injured, or can even die. Some examples of these incidents, as The Dodo has said, are a male whale named Nakai had his chin torn off in a fight. Additionally, a female whale named Kandu broke her own jaw and cut her artery in a fight, eventually bleeding to death. Her calf was circling around her during the event. In addition, the Huffington Post states, animals may suffer from captivity related stresses that lower their resistance and make them more susceptible to disease, making lifespans in captivity significantly lower than in the wild. To add on, The Dodo states, One big issue was the terrible state of the orcas teeth. Captive orcas are already at risk for dental trauma bored and stressed, they often begin gnawing on the edges of their tanks. They also state that these occurrences in the wild are very rare. Also, whales like Tilikum got a lung infection due to bacterial pneumonia, which is the most common reason why captive whales and dolphins die (according to Wikipedia). Tilikum had also died due to the disease. This indicates that whale captivity leads to many incidents and diseases that the whales would not have faced in the wild. All these problems are caused due to them being captive. Orca captivity is also dangerous for human beings. For example, Tilikum was the cause of the death of 3 people as shown in Blackfish. First, he and 2 other whales drowned Keltie Byrne, who had slipped into the pool. She was screaming and tried to escape, but the whales pulled her back and drowned her. Then, a ... In Peterson, the Supreme Court upheld an imposition of expenses because the Plaintiff sought dismissal right before the trial began and because it was clear the Plaintiff wished to re file the case. Based on my observations and analysis, Melville s use of many elements in his story first and foremost the character of Bartleby, but also the dead letters, the many walls of Wall Street, and the state of Wall Street itself works well to develop a sense of hopelessness, whether intentional or not, in the story as well as the narrator and consequently the reader. (Wilson) Bartleby, however, who prefers not to do any work after a short period of working in the office, greatly discourages the lawyer because he does not prove useful in any way. For instance, the Orchid scent is available in Bar Soap, Body Lotion and Body wash. Similarly, there are other scents available in these subcategories. The portfolio graphics in Appendix B explain Olay s visual representation across four different products. In general the Olay brand is visible in the graphics, however, its collection of ProX appears to have a bigger visual representation in its packaging. The colors, layout, and typeface are specific and vary for each product collection/brand. The portfolio role for Olay from a P G perspective can be described as a cash cow. As Olay is a market leader in the skin care product category and has consistently held a similar market share. However, the category is getting more competitive and Olay s positioning ... It made people learn about the creatures that are too small for the human eye to see normally. But sometimes, the image given by magnification is unclear. And here is a solution: colored magnifying lens. Colored glasses lens change the way people see, so why not improvise and add that feature to magnifying glasses? Shinto has no concept of sin, but rather it teaches that evil actions can contaminate individuals by causing them to accrue impurities that poison innocence and offend the Kami. To rid one s self of these impurities, Shintoism prescribes ritual washings in natural phenomena like a large source of flowing water or salt. The symbolism of water recognizes that the purification process is letting the person previous sins and acts of uncleanliness flow out of their soul and allowing the Kami, in this case water spirit, to carry it away. The uses of salt could be applied to purify the land before any use such as agriculture or construction of buildings. The rituals of purification do not apply to only individuals and groups, but to the christening of new buildings and the start of a new business or a change in government officials. The Achievement Of The Millennium Development Goals Electrification is widely believed to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), based on the assumption that sustainable access to modern energy services fosters economic and social development, and leads to improvements in the quality of life. Yet, particularly in rural Sub Saharan Africa electrification rates are still low, as not far beyond 36 % (as of international study) of the population use electricity. In rural Ethiopia, the electrification rate is even considerably lower. As part of the efforts to achieve the MDGs it is among the national policy priorities of most countries to improve access to electricity be it via extension of the national grid or decentralized electricity. The national target for Ethiopia, for example, is to augment the overall electrification rate to 90 % by 2015 a lot times the rate in 1998 E.C. The international donor community joins these efforts and has increased its support to the energy sector in general and electrification projects in particular. As part of these international Endeavours s, World Bank, Bank of Arab for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), the Kuwait Fund, African Development Bank (AFDB) and bilateral cooperation from development partner countries like Indian Government envisages the sustainable provision of access to modern energy for rural community within the country. • 48. Students Face A Different Education System Welcome international students! It must be exciting to start your education in the U.S.A. Here students face a different education system which may seem confusing at first due to the rules of avoiding plagiarism. International students often find that the education system that they are used to has different views on plagiarism compared to the U.S education system. As a result of this difference in education systems, new students may unintentionally plagiarise. However, according to U.S universities, a person commits plagiarism if they present the ideas or words of another person as their own without proper recognition of the original author (Indiana University, 2005, Paragraph 2). When international students don t understand the concept of plagiarism according to U.S universities, it is difficult for them to study and work in the universities. However, it is possible to understand American universities view towards plagiarism by understanding their outlook towards intellectual property, the implications of committing plagiarism and its consequences. To understand the idea that American institutes have about plagiarism, we need to first understand the American perspective about intellectual property. Introduction Fairfax County, Virginia is located just west of Washington, DC (DC) and is considered part of the Metropolitan Baltimore Washington Region. Land use in Fairfax County consists of a mix of commercial, residential, and industrial uses. This is why he is praised forever and ever amen. But why he s sorry when he has to wipe out the face of the earth with the flood during Noah s time is that he is sorry that nothing is like him.
