World Heart Day is an annual campaign started in 2000 by the World Heart Federation to educate people that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, killing over 17 million people annually. Cardiovascular disease refers to conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, like heart attacks and strokes, which account for 85% of all cardiovascular deaths. Risk factors include smoking, unhealthy diet, obesity, lack of exercise, stress, and medical conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. To reduce risk, individuals should get enough sleep, engage in daily physical activity, reduce processed foods and sugar intake, practice good dental hygiene, and quit smoking.
