It’s not just a place where you get to learn Einstein’s Theory of
Relativity. It’s also a place where you can think beyond the
classroom. Hence we say, SCHOOL IS COOL!

I
t is the prime responsi-
bility of any school to
give an awareness of hy-
gienic toilet habits. Teaching
children as they grow is a very
engaging and challenging
process. With the current
busy schedule, a child
does not take proper
time for healthy toilet
habits at home.
This results in
rushing to the toilet or
vomiting after coming
to school. Inculcating
healthy habits from a
young age is important
to ensure that our children re-
main safe and healthy.
Most of the students are find-
ing inconvenient to get permis-
sion during class hours to use the
w a s h r o o m .
S c h o o l s
should pro-
vide ample
time for stu-
dents to use
the wash-
room. An ex-
clusive day could
be organized every
week for drinking wa-
ter together at school,
which could eventually re-
duce most of the major illnesses
of a child.
Schools should find time in
educating every girl child from
Grade VI and above regarding the
awareness of why it is important
to maintain good hygiene during
their menstrual periods. Assem-
bly activities on healthy toilet
habits will bring many impacts
on the children.
They need to be educated
regularly on Hand
Washing, Proper Main-
tenance of Nails,
Brushing, having a
Good Sleep, Chewing
food, and daily bathing. It is
obvious from the existing stu-
dents, that most of their parents
have not educated their children
on proper toilet habits. Parents
should not see this as an addi-
tional burden but constantly ed-
ucate the children and monitor
them.
Teaching children about hy-
giene can help them to take care
of themselves. Some girl children
hesitate to go to the restroom dur-
ing their time at school and wait
until they go home. This leads to
many medical illnesses.
Awareness of drinking
enough water, and following
healthy toilet habits should also
be a part of learning. Toilet eti-
quette is all about hygiene and
cleanliness. Schools should en-
sure that the Washrooms at
school are well maintained and
it is cleaned periodically based
on the school's strength. A good
and hygienic Toilet is one among
the prime Indi-
cator of a good
school.

C
limate change is one of the great-
est threats to humankind. Forests
are intrinsically linked to climate
change and can be a part of the solution
by being carbon sinks. Deforestation and
forest degradation directly impact climate
change. As we are rebuilding our
economies after COVID-19, we need con-
crete and actionable recovery plans to re-
duce greenhouse gas to attain net zero
emissions by 2050 and reduce forest loss.
Yuvabharathi Public School, with eco-
consciousness as one of its core values,
has drafted an action plan for taking steps
to combat climate change under the aegis
of the Young Indians (Yi) Thalir pro-
gramme.
Yi is an integral part of the Confed-
eration of Indian Industry and a platform
led by youth to lead, co-create and influ-
ence India’s future. R. Nandakumar,
Founder and Managing Director of BCT
(Biodiversity Conservation Trust), Sathya-
mangalam, conducted an interactive ses-
sion for 300 students of upper primary
class IV and V at the school’s auditorium
recently. He vividly enlightened the au-
dience on biodiversity
, how organisms are
organised and interdependent at differ-
ent levels and our role in the protection
of their habitat.
A highly engaging workshop on seed
ball preparation followed this session
which kept the nimble fingers working
for an actionable goal - The conservation
of forests. These seed balls will be later
dispersed into the forest before the mon-
soon by the forest officials.
This environmental programme, fo-
cusing on climate change and conserva-
tion, created awareness and prepared the
young leaders to take action for af-
forestation through the indigenous prepa-
ration of seed balls.

NATIONAL LIBRARIAN’S DAY
CELEBRATED AT SBOA
T
eacher’s Day is celebrated in
India every year on 5th Sep-
tember to appreciate the role
played by teachers in the life of stu-
dents–the leaders of tomorrow. The
day is also celebrated to pay tribute
to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan,
former President of the country and
a visionary educator.
Teachers provide the power of
knowledge and education and cre-
ate possibilities for a better future.
Lisieux Matric Hr. Sec. School cel-
ebrated this day with great enthu-
siasm on 5th September, 2022.
The whole event was meticu-
lously planned by the Portfolio
members, under the guidance of the
Principal, Rev. Fr. Dr. Paul
Thekkiniyath. The program was
hosted by Sarvesh and Joshua of
class XII. Prince Krishna, School
Students' Chairman gave a warm
welcome to the gathering.
The Principal, Administrator,
teachers and the students graced
the occasion with their presence.
The program started with a beau-
tiful invocation song, followed by
an enthusiastic welcome address by
Vidyuth of class XII.
The School Chairman, Prince
Krishna shared his personal expe-
rience with the teachers. He said
that teachers are patient and ever
forgiving. The Principal in his ad-
dress beautifully explained the role
of a teacher. He said everyone is a
teacher, for we either teach some-
one or learn something from some-
one everyday
. He went on to say that
the teachers are the second parents.
An Indo-Western dance per-
formance added spice to the pro-
gramme. The students requested
the teachers to take a red carpet
walk to receive the gift from the
Principal. The entire programme
was applauded by everyone present
and will always remain a beautiful

being egoistic. She behaves like a

Even if we received low
grades, she would encourage us
to do better the next time. Because
of the way she teaches, even our
parents like her! If I had to pick
between so many teachers, I would
go with her. She has been our class
teacher for two years, and if you
ask us if we are bored of her, we
would say no because she can turn
a boring day into a fun one in a
matter of minutes. Furthermore,
she does not complain about us to
our parents, which is the best part!
She understands where each child
is weak and where they need to
improve. She gives us breaks when
we need them and treats us as if
we were her own children. My sis-

important, and each teacher plays
a unique role in the classroom.

nam is celebrated to honour the great king of
Kerala, Mahabali. Mahabali was a demon king
and was said to be very compassionate and gen-
erous. Due to his arrogance, the gods wanted to teach
him a lesson and went to Lord Vishnu for help.
Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a Brah-
min and went to Bali. He said he wanted 3 steps
of land. He took his original form and covered the
entire world in 2 paces. For the 3rd one, Mahabali
offered himself for Vishnu to step on. So, seeing his devotion, Vish-
nu granted a wish to Bali that he would come every year to his king-
dom to see his subjects and citizens. This day is celebrated as Onam
every year. People wear new cloths and the women put rangolis with
flowers and colour powder. They invite their family and
friends for a fabulous meal and enjoy it together. Onam
is not only celebrated in India, but also in other coun-
tries like UAE, Singapore, and UK.

“What colonialism does is cause an identity crisis about one’s
own culture.”
LUPITA NYONG’O, KENYAN-MEXICAN ACTRESS
OF THE WEEK
Who is the speaker?
Farish Ahmad Noor is Professor at the
Department of History, Faculty of the Arts and
Social Sciences, University of Malaya.
What does he say?
“Now, there’s one thing that I cannot explain as a historian, and this
has been puzzling me for a long time, and this is how and why cer-
tain ideas, certain viewpoints do not seem to ever go away. And I
don’t know why. And in particular, I’m interested to understand why
some people — not all, by no means — but some people in postcolo-
nial Asia still hold on to a somewhat romanticised view of the colo-
nial past, see it through kind of rose-tinted lenses as perhaps a
time that was benevolent or nice or pleasant, even though histori-
ans know the realities of the violence and the oppression and the
darker side of that entire colonial experience.”

WHAT’S THE HISTORY OF MEMES?
There isn’t a single day that we don’t see a new meme on our
social media feeds. At times, the same meme is shared by
almost everyone on our timeline. Most times, they make us
laugh. But have you ever thought where memes generated
from? How did this trend start? Here are a few pointers…
1
Memes didn’t start with the
internet. Some linguists argue
that humans have used memes
to communicate for centuries.
Memes are widely known as “con-
duits for cultural conversations and
an opportunity to participate in inter-
net trends”.
2
It’s difficult to
identify the
first meme
ever, but British
evolutionary biologist
Richard Dawkins is
credited with introduc-
ing the term in his 1976
book, ‘The Selfish Gene’.
3
Humans have used memes to
communicate for as long as
they have used any symbolic
system. A meme is just an
idea that rips through the public con-
sciousness.
wanted to use a monosyllable that sounded
like “gene”. Dawkins said: “It could alter-
natively be thought of as being related to
‘memory’ or to the French word “même”.
5
’Webster’s New World College
Dictionary’ defines a meme as “a
concept, belief, or practice con-
ceived as a unit of cultural infor-
mation that may be passed on from per-
son to person, subject to influences in a
way similar to natural selection”.
6
Like many words in the English
language, the word “meme” has
undergone a semantic shift over
time. In an internet-saturated
world, memes and their
meanings are co-construct-
ed by multiple users in a
social context.
7
The popular meme
creator Saint Hoax,
who has three mil-
lion Instagram fol-
lowers, defines it as a piece of media
that is repurposed to deliver a cul-
tural, social or political expression,
mainly through humour. “It has the
ability to capture insight in a way
that is in complete alignment with the
zeitgeist,” Hoax said.
4
In French, the word “même”
translates to “same” and the
Greek word “mimoúmai”
means “to imitate”. In his
book, Dawkins said, “We need a name
for the new replicator, a noun that con-
veys the idea of a unit of cultural trans-
mission, or a unit of imitation.” He
With Queen Elizabeth II’s death, the focus is
back on the British Empire’s exploits from
its former colonies. Here are a few podcasts

THE GLOBAL HISTORY PODCAST
3
This is an educational show designed for students,
teachers, and anyone interested in the early mod-
ern world. This pod dedicates itself to sharing his-
tories – both early modern and
global, from approximately the
16th to the early 19th centuries. It
explores various themes, focusing
on trade, ideas, and commodities
that connected distant continents
in the age of sail.
STUFF THE BRITISH STOLE
4
Throughout its reign, the British Empire stole a lot
of stuff. Today those
objects are housed in gen-
teel institutions across the UK
and the world. They usually
come with polite plaques. This is
a series about the not-so-polite
history behind those objects.
The death of Queen Elizabeth II means
the fabled Koh-i-Noor diamond will pass
on to Queen Consort Camilla. But, will
the controversy over the coveted jewel
in the crown end?
THE BRITISH
OFFICER WHO

TAKING OF THE
KOH-I-NOOR
O
fficials at the Nilgiris Documen-
tation Centre (NDC) recall how
John Sullivan, founder of mod-
ern Ooty
, had condemned the de-
thronement of Maharaja Duleep
Singh of Punjab by the East Indian Compa-
ny and the confiscation of his properties, in-
cluding the Koh-i-Noor.
In 1849, after 10-year-old Duleep Singh —
the last known owner of the Koh-iNoor —
was defeated in the second Anglo-Sikh War,
Governor General Lord Dalhousie took over
the Sikh kingdom, confiscated the state prop-
erties and presented the famous diamond to
the Queen of England.
According to NDC director Dharma-
lingam Venugopal, in 1850, an enraged Sul-
livan condemned the dethronement and
wrote a 70-page treatise, stating that before
wearing the Koh-i-Noor, Her Majesty should
ascertain whose property it was. Analysing
Duleep Singh’s terms of surrender, Sullivan
concluded that as it was a private property
of the child king, the Queen had no right to
own it. TNN

hen 102-year-old Duli Chand’s pension
was stopped because Indian authori-
ties could not believe he was still alive,
all efforts to prove them wrong failed
– until this week.
Chand arrived at a government office in a
horse-drawn carriage wearing full wedding garb
and accompanied by a brass band, and declared,
“I’m alive!” He said, “My old-age pension was
stopped in March as the government records show
that I am dead. I’ve since been trying in vain to
prove that I am still alive.”
Activist Naveen Jaihind, who was one of the
dozens who joined the procession, said that he
heard about the case and decided to help. “To-
gether we approached different offices and held
a press conference but to no avail,” Jaihind
said. “This is when we thought of a wedding
procession as a way to get some much-need-
ed attention and action,” he added.
The activist said after Chand’s procession
video went viral, he has since received phone
calls from about three dozen people across
Haryana facing a similar situation .

Workshop on biodiversity and conservation of forests at Yuvabharathi

  • 1. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2022 It’s not just a place where you get to learn Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. It’s also a place where you can think beyond the classroom. Hence we say, SCHOOL IS COOL! SCHOOL IS COOL 03 Volume 12, Issue 18 Regn No: TNENG/2011/39712 Published by R. J. Prakashan on behalf of Bennet, Coleman Co.Ltd., Kochar Tower, 19, Venkatnarayana Road, Theagaraya Nagar, Chennai 600017, and Printed by him at Rajhans Enterprises, No. 26, Private Industrial Estate, Pollachi Main Road, Sundarapuram, Coimbatore 641024 Editor (Chennai Market): Arun Ram - Responsible for selection of news under PRB Act. All rights reserved. Reproduction in whole or in part without the written permission of the Publisher is prohibited. Tel. Nos. Chennai (044) 40401234, E-Mail: timesnie.cbe@gmail.com. I t is the prime responsi- bility of any school to give an awareness of hy- gienic toilet habits. Teaching children as they grow is a very engaging and challenging process. With the current busy schedule, a child does not take proper time for healthy toilet habits at home. This results in rushing to the toilet or vomiting after coming to school. Inculcating healthy habits from a young age is important to ensure that our children re- main safe and healthy. Most of the students are find- ing inconvenient to get permis- sion during class hours to use the w a s h r o o m . S c h o o l s should pro- vide ample time for stu- dents to use the wash- room. An ex- clusive day could be organized every week for drinking wa- ter together at school, which could eventually re- duce most of the major illnesses of a child. Schools should find time in educating every girl child from Grade VI and above regarding the awareness of why it is important to maintain good hygiene during their menstrual periods. Assem- bly activities on healthy toilet habits will bring many impacts on the children. They need to be educated regularly on Hand Washing, Proper Main- tenance of Nails, Brushing, having a Good Sleep, Chewing food, and daily bathing. It is obvious from the existing stu- dents, that most of their parents have not educated their children on proper toilet habits. Parents should not see this as an addi- tional burden but constantly ed- ucate the children and monitor them. Teaching children about hy- giene can help them to take care of themselves. Some girl children hesitate to go to the restroom dur- ing their time at school and wait until they go home. This leads to many medical illnesses. Awareness of drinking enough water, and following healthy toilet habits should also be a part of learning. Toilet eti- quette is all about hygiene and cleanliness. Schools should en- sure that the Washrooms at school are well maintained and it is cleaned periodically based on the school's strength. A good and hygienic Toilet is one among the prime Indi- cator of a good school. K.K.GANESH, Principal, ELGI Matriculation Hr.Sec School , Coimbatore. Forests are intrinsically linked to climate change and can be a part of the solution by being carbon sinks. Deforestation and forest degradation directly impact climate change. As we are rebuilding our economies after COVID-19, we need con- crete and actionable recovery plans to re- duce greenhouse gas to attain net zero emissions by 2050 and reduce forest loss. Yuvabharathi Public School, with eco- consciousness as one of its core values, has drafted an action plan for taking steps to combat climate change under the aegis of the Young Indians (Yi) Thalir pro- gramme. Yi is an integral part of the Confed- eration of Indian Industry and a platform led by youth to lead, co-create and influ- ence India’s future. R. Nandakumar, Founder and Managing Director of BCT (Biodiversity Conservation Trust), Sathya- mangalam, conducted an interactive ses- sion for 300 students of upper primary class IV and V at the school’s auditorium recently. He vividly enlightened the au- dience on biodiversity , how organisms are organised and interdependent at differ- ent levels and our role in the protection of their habitat. A highly engaging workshop on seed ball preparation followed this session which kept the nimble fingers working for an actionable goal - The conservation of forests. These seed balls will be later dispersed into the forest before the mon- soon by the forest officials. This environmental programme, fo- cusing on climate change and conserva- tion, created awareness and prepared the young leaders to take action for af- forestation through the indigenous prepa- ration of seed balls. 4 3rd Coimbatore Sahodaya In- ter School Table Tennis Tour- nament-2022 was hosted by Sri Vinayaga Vidhyalaya School, Karamadai, Coimbatore on 10th September. Sind- hu mam instilled in me and my friendsmanyunforgettablevalues, including the importance of not being egoistic. She behaves like a mother; if we made a mistake, she wouldscoldusbutalsocompliment and encourage us. Even if we received low grades, she would encourage us to do better the next time. Because of the way she teaches, even our parents like her! If I had to pick between so many teachers, I would go with her. She has been our class teacher for two years, and if you ask us if we are bored of her, we would say no because she can turn a boring day into a fun one in a matter of minutes. Furthermore, she does not complain about us to our parents, which is the best part! She understands where each child is weak and where they need to improve. She gives us breaks when we need them and treats us as if we were her own children. My sis- ter used to say that each finger is important, and each teacher plays a unique role in the classroom. APARNA PRASANTH, Class VII PSBB Millennium School, Coimbatore A teacher who changed my life O nam is celebrated to honour the great king of Kerala, Mahabali. Mahabali was a demon king and was said to be very compassionate and gen- erous. Due to his arrogance, the gods wanted to teach him a lesson and went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a Brah- min and went to Bali. He said he wanted 3 steps of land. He took his original form and covered the entire world in 2 paces. For the 3rd one, Mahabali offered himself for Vishnu to step on. So, seeing his devotion, Vish- nu granted a wish to Bali that he would come every year to his king- dom to see his subjects and citizens. This day is celebrated as Onam every year. Farish Ahmad Noor is Professor at the Department of History, Faculty of the Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya. What does he say? “Now, there’s one thing that I cannot explain as a historian, and this has been puzzling me for a long time, and this is how and why cer- tain ideas, certain viewpoints do not seem to ever go away. And I don’t know why. And in particular, I’m interested to understand why some people — not all, by no means — but some people in postcolo- nial Asia still hold on to a somewhat romanticised view of the colo- nial past, see it through kind of rose-tinted lenses as perhaps a time that was benevolent or nice or pleasant, even though histori- ans know the realities of the violence and the oppression and the darker side of that entire colonial experience.” Link: https://www.ted.com/talks/farish_ahmad_noor TED TALK TED TALK Why is colonialism (still) romanticised? There isn’t a single day that we don’t see a new meme on our social media feeds. At times, the same meme is shared by almost everyone on our timeline. Most times, they make us laugh. But have you ever thought where memes generated from? How did this trend start? Here are a few pointers… 1 Memes didn’t start with the internet. Some linguists argue that humans have used memes to communicate for centuries. Memes are widely known as “con- duits for cultural conversations and an opportunity to participate in inter- net trends”. 2 It’s difficult to identify the first meme ever, but British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins is credited with introduc- ing the term in his 1976 book, ‘The Selfish Gene’. 3 Humans have used memes to communicate for as long as they have used any symbolic system. A meme is just an idea that rips through the public con- sciousness. wanted to use a monosyllable that sounded like “gene”. Dawkins said: “It could alter- natively be thought of as being related to ‘memory’ or to the French word “même”. 5 ’Webster’s New World College Dictionary’ defines a meme as “a concept, belief, or practice con- ceived as a unit of cultural infor- mation that may be passed on from per- son to person, subject to influences in a way similar to natural selection”. 6 Like many words in the English language, the word “meme” has undergone a semantic shift over time. In an internet-saturated world, memes and their meanings are co-construct- ed by multiple users in a social context. 7 The popular meme creator Saint Hoax, who has three mil- lion Instagram fol- lowers, defines it as a piece of media that is repurposed to deliver a cul- tural, social or political expression, mainly through humour. “It has the ability to capture insight in a way that is in complete alignment with the zeitgeist,” Hoax said. 4 In French, the word “même” translates to “same” and the Greek word “mimoúmai” means “to imitate”. In his book, Dawkins said, “We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that con- veys the idea of a unit of cultural trans- mission, or a unit of imitation.” He With Queen Elizabeth II’s death, the focus is back on the British Empire’s exploits from its former colonies. STUFF THE BRITISH STOLE 4 Throughout its reign, the British Empire stole a lot of stuff. Today those objects are housed in gen- teel institutions across the UK and the world. They usually come with polite plaques. This is a series about the not-so-polite history behind those objects. The death of Queen Elizabeth II means the fabled Koh-i-Noor diamond will pass on to Queen Consort Camilla. But, will the controversy over the coveted jewel in the crown end? THE BRITISH OFFICER WHO WAS AGAINST TAKING OF THE KOH-I-NOOR O fficials at the Nilgiris Documen- tation Centre (NDC) recall how John Sullivan, founder of mod- ern Ooty , had condemned the de- thronement of Maharaja Duleep Singh of Punjab by the East Indian Compa- ny and the confiscation of his properties, in- cluding the Koh-i-Noor. In 1849, after 10-year-old Duleep Singh — the last known owner of the Koh-iNoor — was defeated in the second Anglo-Sikh War, Governor General Lord Dalhousie took over the Sikh kingdom, confiscated the state prop- erties and presented the famous diamond to the Queen of England. According to NDC director Dharma- lingam Venugopal, in 1850, an enraged Sul- livan condemned the dethronement and wrote a 70-page treatise, stating that before wearing the Koh-i-Noor, Her Majesty should ascertain whose property it was. Analysing Duleep Singh’s terms of surrender, Sullivan concluded that as it was a private property of the child king, the Queen had no right to own it. TNN Read this... Chand arrived at a government office in a horse-drawn carriage wearing full wedding garb and accompanied by a brass band, and declared, “I’m alive!” He said, “My old-age pension was stopped in March as the government records show that I am dead. I’ve since been trying in vain to prove that I am still alive.” Activist Naveen Jaihind, who was one of the dozens who joined the procession, said that he heard about the case and decided to help. “To- gether we approached different offices and held a press conference but to no avail,” Jaihind said. “This is when we thought of a wedding procession as a way to get some much-need- ed attention and action,” he added. The activist said after Chand’s procession video went viral, he has since received phone calls from about three dozen people across Haryana facing a similar situation .
