One significant discovery that took place in recent years was the detection of gravitational waves. In 2015, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) made the first-ever direct detection of gravitational waves, which are ripples in space-time caused by the movement of massive objects. This discovery confirmed a prediction made by Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity and opened up a new way of studying the universe.
Another major discovery was the detection of a subatomic particle called the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson, also known as the "God particle," was first proposed in 1964 as a way to explain why some particles have mass. In 2012, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) announced that they had successfully detected the Higgs boson, providing strong evidence for the existence of this elusive particle.
In the field of biology, scientists made significant progress in understanding the human genome. In 2003, the Human Genome Project announced that they had completed a rough draft of the human genome, which is the complete set of genetic instructions found in human cells. Since then, scientists have been using this information to learn more about how genes contribute to the development of various diseases and conditions, as well as to develop new treatments and therapies.
In the field of astronomy, scientists made a number of important discoveries in recent years. In 2014, for example, scientists announced the detection of a planet orbiting a star outside our solar system that was similar in size and temperature to Earth. This discovery, known as the "exoplanet," was seen as a major step towards finding other potentially habitable planets in the universe.
There have also been significant advances in the field of renewable energy in recent years. In 2017, for example, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reported that the cost of solar energy had fallen by 73% since 2010, making it more competitive with fossil fuels.
These are just a few examples of the many scientific discoveries that have been made in recent years. I'm sorry that I can't provide more information about discoveries in 2020, but I hope this gives you a sense of some of the exciting advances that have taken place in various fields of science.

Science from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge“[ is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe In an older and closely related meaning, "science" also refers to a body of knowledge itself, of the type that can be rationally explained and reliably applied. A practitioner of science is known as a scientist.
Since classical antiquity, science as a type of knowledge has been closely linked tophilosophy. In the early modern period the words "science" and "philosophy" were sometimes used interchangeably. By the 17th century, natural philosophy (which is today called "natural science") was considered a separate branch of philosophy. However, "science" continued to be used in a broad sense denoting reliable knowledge about a topic, in the same way it is still used in modern terms such aslibrary scienceor political science.

dimensional structures of proteins,
thus aiding the understanding of
protein functions and the identifi-
cation of drug targets. This year, AI
has achieved another breakthrough,
this time at the other end of the
drug discovery pipeline: several
groups in 2022 have reported the
first successful applications of AI to

8Elite mathematicians - The
Fields medal recognises out-
standing mathematical achievement
for existing work. Often described
as the Nobel prize of mathematics,
it is awarded every four years to
recipients under the age of 40.
Congratulations to Prof James
Maynard, who was awarded a Fields
medal this year for his “spectacular
contributions” to analytic number
theory, “which have led to major
advances in the understanding of
the structure of prime numbers and
in Diophantine approximation”. One
of his standout proofs was to prove
the following: there are infinitely
many prime numbers whose decimal
representation does not contain the
digit 7. Such a simple statement to
understand but not very easy to
prove. Maynard joins an elite list of
British mathematicians who have
won the medal.
9Stepping up to education with a
STEM lab In the lab, built with a
fund of Rs 10 lakh, students from
classes 6 to 12
can learn robot-
ics, drone technol-
ogy, 3D printing,
artificial intelligence and digital sci-
ence after school hours. The STEM
lab allows students to gain hands-on
practical training and the skills
required to succeed in the 21stcen-
tury job market. “Everything is the-
oretically impossible until it is done
and this is the lab that will play an
important role in converting theory
into practice for the students in the
future,”. The lab is facilitated to
occupy 25 students at a time and has
one full-time worker at the lab along
with science teachers coming in to
teach. Technological partner Edutech
conducted a two-day session for
around 25 teachers to learn the tech-
nology to teach the students.

11Global warming the world’s
oceans reached a new record
high temperature of 20.96 °C,
exceeding the previous record in
2016. July is also confirmed as hav-
ing been the hottest month on
record for globally averaged surface
air temperatures by a considerable
margin.
12A study estimates that global
warming of 2 °C could result
in the mass deaths of 1 billion peo-
ple by 2100. 13. A meta-analysis
finds that three doses of a covid-19
vaccine offer 69% effectiveness

As all the proud Indians would
agree, the most prestigious and
glorious event in the year 2023
for India is the successful launch
of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon.
The speciality of this mission is
that ISRO could touch the South
pole of the moon which no other
space organisations could achieve.
Our scientists never gave up after
the unsuccessful launch of the
Chandrayaan-2. They continuously
worked towards this mission over-
coming many hurdles. Our scien-
tists have proved that with will-
power, determination, and hard
work we can overcome any obsta-
cles. Once again, a big salute to
all the people behind this marvel-
lous achievement which made
each and every
Indian beam with
pride.

INDIA’S NEW PARLIAMENT BUILDING:
A MAJESTIC SYMBOL OF CULTURAL AND POLITICAL PROGRESS
T
he new Parliament Building, a majestic triangular
structure, is located next to the old Parliament
Building, serving as the home of the Lok Sabha,
the Rajya Sabha, and other members of Parliament. It
has replaced the previous colonial structure that was
over a century old. The building has three entrances:
Gyan Dwar (the gate of knowledge), Shakti Dwar (the
gate of power), and Karma Dwar (the gate of karma),
each guarded by six statues. The intricate design of the
building reflects the country’s cultural and spiritual
values. India’s new parliament building was officially
inaugurated on May 28th, 2023 in New Delhi, India.
During the opening ceremony, our honourable Prime
Minister, Narendra Modi, placed a gold-plated sceptre
called Sengol near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair, sym-
bolizing justice and good governance. The building’s
capacity was set to expand due to the delimitation
exercise, scheduled to take place in 2026. The Women’s
Reservation Bill, the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’,
holds great historical significance as it was a long-
pending and now the first bill taken up by the new leg-
islative body and passed successfully. This bill aims to
increase the representation of women in the legislature
and inspire them to play a more significant role in
shaping a self-reliant India.
