School observed Forest Day to raise
awareness among students about the
values, significance, and contributions of
forests to the earth's life cycle. The cele-
brants were the future pillars of the Na-
tional Rather the Planet Earth. The kids
were taken aback when they saw the trees,
plants, and flowers.
They saw the animals and realised
that forests are home to them. The day
was filled with laughter. The Kinder
Garten students delighted each other by
donning masks of various domestic and
wild animals. The students were informed
that the 21st of March is designated as
"World Forestry Day" each year. During
the celebration, the teachers explained to
the students that trees provide shade, shel-
ter, refreshment, including clean air and
water.
Apart from that, the teachers stated
that water percolates deep into the ground
because trees loosen the soil, which helps
increase ground water levels. It was also
stated that trees prevent soil erosion by
binding the soil with their roots.
Little kids performed a play about de-
forestation. It was overwhelming to hear
the consequences of deforestation in their
lisp. In fact, this drama instilled in every
audience the need for reforestation. With
the cheerful faces of the kids , the day
came to a close.

ugust 15, is the glorious day for
Indians for it marked the ac-
complishment of dreams of mil-
lions of patriotic citizens who laid their
life for the independence of our nation
from the Britishers. The 75th Indepen-
dence Day was celebrated in a very spe-
cial way at ELGI Matric Hr Sec School
to mark the significance of this day
.
The ceremony began with a parade
of the NCC students and the school
band. Jayashankar Jayaraman, Advi-
sor, hoisted the national flag and com-
memorated the celebration. G. Mani,
Correspondent, K.K.Ganesh, Princi-
pal, S.Rajendran, Vice-Principal, Pro-
gramme Coordinator H. Premalatha,
teachers and students saluted the na-
tional flag and sang the flag song.
The patriotic feeling was expressed
in the Independence Day speech given
by students in Tamil, English and Hin-
di. The spectacular classical Bharata
natyam, the vibrant patriotic songs of
Rabindranath Tagore and Subramania
Bharathi, the historical drama on Kat-
tabomman, the 75 years achievements
of India and the National integration
song expressing the unity of Indians in
diversity filled everyone’s mind with
the pride to be an Indian.
On the occasion, school correspon-
dent G. Mani, presented certificates to
the NCC students. The Independence
Day speech given by the School Advi-
sor etched patriotism as well as the re-
sponsibilities towards strengthening
our Nation in future. The celebration
ended with the distribution to all.
I
n grade 10, I started to de-
fine a Sanskrit sloka after
giving it some thought in
class. It clarified that every life
form on Earth has qualities of
its own. I provided an exam-
ple to fully clarify the notion
before going into further de-
tail.
Both a horse and a mule
are useful in terms of the
labor they perform for
man. A horse can run
quickly, just as we may do
so to get from one area to
another. A mule can also
be used to transport luggage from one
location to another.
Following the explanation, I asked
the class, "Who are you willing to be?" a
mule or a horse? The responses were in-
consistent. Some of them want to be
mules, while others want to
be horses. Some people dream
of being horses and mules.
A student at the time
posed an unexpected question.
Could I perhaps have the op-
portunity to ride that horse
and mule, sir? The entire class
was stunned. He mentioned
that I can control the horse as
I wish. That time one girl
got up and asked, sir,
could I be a master of that
rider? So
that I
can con-
trol the rider, horse and
mule?

W
ater is the basic necessity for
the functioning of all life
forms that exist on earth. It
is safe to say that water is the reason
behind earth being the only planet to
support life. This universal solvent
is one of the major resources we
have on this planet. It is impossible
for life to function without water. Af-
ter all, it makes for almost 70% of the
earth.
However, despite its vast abun-
dance, water is very much limited. It
is a non-renewable resource. In ad-
dition, we need to realize the fact
that although there is an abundance
of water, not all of it is safe to con-
sume. We derive some very essential
uses from the water on a daily basis.
If we talk about our personal lives,
water is the foundation of our exis-
tence.
The human body needs water for
the day to day survival. We may be
able to survive without any food for
a whole week but without water, we
won’t even survive for 3 days. More-
over, our body itself comprises of 70%
water. This, in turn, helps our body
to function nor-
mally.
Thus, the lack of suf-
ficient water or the con-
sumption of contaminated
water can cause serious
health problems for humans.
Therefore, the amount and
quality of water that we consume
is essential for our physical health
plus fitness. Further, our daily activ-
ities are incomplete without water.
Whether we talk about getting up in
the morning to brush or cook our
food, it is equally important.
This domestic use of water makes
us very dependent on this transpar-
ent chemical. In addition, on a large
scale, the industries consume a lot of
water. They need water for almost
every step of their process. It is es-
sential for the production of the goods
we use every day. If we look beyond
human uses, we will realize how wa-
ter plays a major role in every living
being's life. It is the home of aquatic
animals.
From a tiny insect to a whale,
every organism needs water to sur-
vive. Therefore, we see how not only
human beings but plants and animals
too require water. The earth depends
on water to function. We cannot be
selfish and use it up for our uses with-
out caring about the environment.
Save Water! Save Life!.

counter a situation
that is simply out
of control. Even when those
thoughts make the agony
worse, we often say things
like "This isn't fair" or
"I shouldn't have this prob-
lem."
We should acknowledge
and accept the situation
rather than focusing on how
we would like something to
be different. It will be easier
to deal with issues that are
out of control if you can
learn to accept them.
It's simple to think right
now, "This isn't fair," yet I did
everything right! And we ex-

1) Signs of successful brain
surgeries go as far back as the
Stone Age.
2) An adult brain weighs
about 3 pounds.
3) About 75 per cent of the
brain is made up of water. This
means that dehydration, even in
small amounts, can have a nega-
tive effect on the brain functions.
4) The largest brain of any animal is
that of the sperm whale. It weighs
about 20 pounds.
5) The human brain will grow three
times its size in the first year of life.
It continues to grow until you’re about
18-year-old.
6) Headaches are caused by a chemical
reaction in your brain combined with the
muscles and nerves of your neck and head.
7) The brain of a human contains
approximately one hundred billion neurons
8) It is a myth that humans only use 10 per
cent of our brain. We actually use all of it.
We’re even using more than 10 per cent
when we sleep.
9) Cholesterol is key to learning and memory.
However, high cholesterol has different
effects depending on your age and other
factors.
10) Information runs between neurons in
your brain for everything we see, think, or
do. These neurons move information at
different speeds. The fastest speed for
information to pass between neurons is about
250 mph.
11) Dreams are believed to be a combination
of imagination, physiological factors, and
neurological factors. They prove that your
brain is working even when you are sleeping.
12) Your brain uses 20 per cent of the
oxygen and blood in your body.
13) Sixty per cent of the human brain is
made of fat.

ransformed Zimbabwe face their
biggest challenge since Dave
Houghton became coach two months
ago when they host India in a series
of three one-day internationals,
starting on Thursday
. Although sev-
eral stars, including batters Virat Kohli and Ro-
hit Sharma, are being rested ahead of the Asia
Cup in the UAE this month, the tourists are ex-
pected to win all three matches in Harare.
THIRD IN ODI RANKING
India are placed third behind leaders New
Zealand and England in the ODI rankings, 10
places above Zimbabwe. Under the guidance of
64-year-old former batting star Houghton, the
southern Africa nation have won nine of 11 ODI
and Twenty20 internationals. With Houghton in
charge, hosts Zimbabwe beat non-Test teams Jer-
sey, Singapore, the United States, Papua New
Guinea and the Netherlands to qualify for the 2022
T20 World Cup. Higher-ranked Bangladesh were
expected to burst the bubble but suffered shock
2-1 losses in both T20 and ODI series. Pakistan-
born batsman Sikandar Raza, whose childhood
dream to be a fighter pilot was dashed by an eye-
sight glitch, played a key role in the ODI series
with successive centuries.
BRILLIANT SHOTS
Houghton said the unbeaten innings of 135 and
117 by the 36-year-old had a knock-on effect as they
instilled confidence in his teammates. “Playing
alongside Sikandar, Innocent Kaia hit a century
in his first ODI, then Regis Chakabva scored his
first ODI ton with some brilliant shots.” Although
missing Kohli and Sharma, Houghton says there
is no such thing as a weak India cricket team.
“They could pick four teams and then occupy the
first four places in an international tournament.
That is how good they are. “However, I told my
boys that we dare not become mere spectators in
this series while India play all the cricket. We
must believe we can win. “The boys know they
are far from invincible despite nine victories --
we were 90-9 in our last ODI against Bangladesh
before the tail-enders added 61 runs.
POOR BATTING STRESSED
Houghton pinpointed poor batting starts as a con-
cern and vowed to “try and get higher scores from
our top order”. Opening batsman and wicket-
keeper Chakabva skippers Zimbabwe in place of
injured Craig Ervine on Thursday as the home
team seek only a fifth ODI victory over India at
home in 24 matches. Injuries have also ruled out
Blessing Muzarabani (thigh), Tendai Chatara (col-
larbone) and Wellington Masakadza (shoulder)
while former captain Sean Williams is unavail-
able. India had to make a late change to a 16-strong
squad with all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed coming
in for Washington Sundar, who was injured play-
ing English county cricket. KL Rahul, a late in-
clusion after recovering from injury and testing
positive for coronavirus, leads the tourists. AFP

gnanandhaa continued his fine run
in the FTX Crypto Cup, the Amer-
ican finale of Champions Chess Tour, beat-
ing Anish Giri of the Netherlands 2.5-1.5
in the second round on Wednesday.
Having started his campaign with vic-
tory over world No.4 and the top ranked
junior Alireza Firouzja, the 17-year old In-
dian prodigy scored the all-important win
in the fourth and final game, to hand Giri
his second straight loss.
Praggnanandhaa, who played a key
role in the Indian ‘B’ team’s bronze medal
win in the recent chess Olympiad in Ma-
habalipuram near Chennai, edged out his
Dutch opponent in 81 moves in the fourth
game after the first three ended in draws.
The Indian GM is now on six points
after two wins, the same as world No.1
Magnus Carlsen of Norway
, who beat Hans
Niemen 3-1.
Praggnanandhaa will take on Carlsen
in the third round later on Wednesday
night. He has beaten the world No.1 twice
in online matches recently and has been
in good form in the past few months. PTI

Medvedev started his
Western & Southern
Open campaign on a
winning note as he de-
feated Botic van de Zandschulp of the
Netherlands on Tuesday. On the other
hand, Spanish teen sensation, Carlos Al-
caraz produced a dominant performance
against Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-2 to
earn his first win in his second Cincin-
nati appearance.
ADVANCED TO THIRD ROUND
The World No. 1 faced a tough test
against the Dutch. He made a fast
start behind an instant break
but had to survive the second
set to secure a 6-4, 7-5 victory
and advance to the third round
in Cincinnati. The second set
of the match was hard fought,
Medvedev built a lead of a set
and a break but immediately
surrendered his advantage as van
de Zandschulp levelled at 3-3 in the
second. The top seed survived thanks
to an error from his opponent, then broke
for the third time in the match as van de
Zandschulp double-faulted three times
on serve at 5-all. “The first set was great.
Everything was working. I had three
games where I had break points but man-
aged to break in the first game, which
was enough,” said Medvedev.
TRICKY FIRST SET
“The second set was going not that bad.
He was not serving especially well today
,
doing a lot of double faults. So, I tried to
keep pressure and use my chances. Ac-
tually, in return, I feel like I did a good
job. Two breaks on these fast courts are
enough to win and I should have done a
little bit better on my serve. But the first
match is tricky and I’m happy that I man-
aged to go through, and hopefully I will
raise my level in the next matches,” he
added. He will next face Montreal quar-
ter-finalist Tommy Paul or Denis Shapo-
valov, with a potential rematch with Kyr-
gios looming in the quarterfinals. “I’m
really happy with the performance to-
day
. One of the goals in this tournament
is to grow with the pressure... to enjoy
as I did at the beginning of the year and
last year. To enjoy playing great tennis,
to try to be relaxed. I think in this round
I did it and I’m really happy with it,”
Carlos Alcaraz said. ANI

PAKISTAN BEAT NETHERLANDS BY 16 RUNS IN 1ST ODI
Pakistan overcame a slow start
and early loss of an opener to
beat the Netherlands by 16 runs in
their first one-day international.
Pakistan won the toss and chose
to bat first. Only at 3-0 after
four overs, it got worse for the
visitors at 10-1 in six overs fol-
lowing Vivian Kingma’s maiden
wicket which claimed Imam-ul-
Haq (2) leg before wicket on
referral by the Netherlands.
Opener Fakhar Zaman led the
recovery with 109 runs in 109
balls, including 12 fours and a
six, before he was run out.
Zaman and captain Babar Azam
(74 in 85) shared a 168-run part-
nership for the second wicket,
and Shadab Khan later smashed
a 28-ball 48 not out as Pakistan
posted a challenging total of
314-6. Dutch pacer Bas de Leede
took 2-42 in 10 overs.
In reply, the Netherlands came
close with 298-8. Dutch captain
Scott Edwards was not out on 71
in 60 balls. Opener Vikramjit
Singh and No. 5 Tom Cooper
both hit 65 runs each. Cooper
scored at a much faster pace,
needing 54 deliveries for his 65
compared to 98 balls for Singh.

SERENA LOSES TO RADUCANU
The second stop on
Serena Williams’
farewell tour was a
short one. Williams
fell to 0-2 in matches
since announcing “the
countdown has begun”
on her career, losing 6-4, 6-
0 to U.S. Open champion Emma
Raducanu in the Western & Southern
Open on Tuesday night.
Williams said last week in a Vogue
magazine essay and an Instagram post
that her career was winding down,
although she did not explicitly say the
U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in
New York, would be her last tourna-
ment. The Cincinnati event was the
second U.S. Open tune-up for Williams,
and the next time she takes the court
will be at Flushing Meadows. She lost
to Belinda Bencic in straight sets last
week in Toronto.
Raducanu, was sharp as she dispatc-
hed Williams - and quieted the vocally
pro-Williams crowd - in 1 hour, 5 mins.

Joint Secretary of the School C R Surya Narayan, during his presidential address, motivated the students to have enough courage to become great leaders. The chief guest of the day said that the quality of the seed decides the quality of the place to become a good tree. Like that the children have landed in good institutions to become good citizens in mak- ing India feel proud of them. He recalled his memory, being a teacher in a school, organizing programs with the students. They depicted the freedom, peace and Unity in Diversity in our country. Independence Day celebrated at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School G RN Matriculation and Higher Secondary School marked the celebration of 75th Indepen- dence Day with much fervor and frol- ic on August 13, 2022. The celebration started prior to Independence Day. The students of GRN displayed the India map on the ground to enumer- ate the Unity in Diversity in regard with the celebration of the 75th In- dependence Day . The programme was well planned by the teachers and duly executed. To enrich the programme a detailed speech was given about each State of India. At last, the Principal of the school V .Ramya addressed the gath- ering with an impressive speech. The program ended up with the National anthem. The day reminded the sacri- fices of those who have given up their lives for the freedom of India. GRN School celebrates Independence Day T he Career Guidance Cell at Yuvab- harathi Public School organised a College Fair in association with IDP Coimbatore on the 30th of July 2022 at the school's auditorium. Around 400 Students from grades X, XI and XII attended this college fair with their parents. About ten national universities and 20 International universities from vari- ous parts of the world, including the US, the UK, and Australia, participated in this fair. They were counselling the visitors regarding their plans to study abroad and in India. The representatives of the universi- ties interacted with the students and par- ents face-to-face. They gave expert guid- ance on eligibility criteria, various suit- able programmes, scholarships, intern- ship opportunities, fee waivers and other queries. After the pandemic respite, the aspi- rants are very enthusiastic about pursu- ing their higher education at reputed In- dian institutions or abroad via on-cam- pus mode. Catering to the needs of the stu- dents, Yuvabharathi has held this fair for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, marking the reignited passion for continuing traditional methods of study . CollegeFairatYuvabharathiguidesaspirantstorealisetheirdreams S ai Vidhya Nikethan Matric Hr. Sec. School observed Forest Day to raise awareness among students about the values, significance, and contributions of forests to the earth's life cycle. The cele- brants were the future pillars of the Na- tional Rather the Planet Earth. The kids were taken aback when they saw the trees, plants, and flowers. They saw the animals and realised that forests are home to them. The day was filled with laughter. The Kinder Garten students delighted each other by donning masks of various domestic and wild animals. The students were informed that the 21st of March is designated as "World Forestry Day" each year. During the celebration, the teachers explained to the students that trees provide shade, shel- ter, refreshment, including clean air and water. Apart from that, the teachers stated that water percolates deep into the ground because trees loosen the soil, which helps increase ground water levels. It was also stated that trees prevent soil erosion by binding the soil with their roots. Little kids performed a play about de- forestation. It was overwhelming to hear the consequences of deforestation in their lisp. In fact, this drama instilled in every audience the need for reforestation. With the cheerful faces of the kids , the day came to a close. Forest Day celebrated at Sai Vidhya Nikethan School ELGI Matriculation HSS celebrates Independence Day “Let’s sing and dance together, For we have attained the freedom of bliss”. A ugust 15, is the glorious day for Indians for it marked the ac- complishment of dreams of mil- lions of patriotic citizens who laid their life for the independence of our nation from the Britishers. The 75th Indepen- dence Day was celebrated in a very spe- cial way at ELGI Matric Hr Sec School to mark the significance of this day . The ceremony began with a parade of the NCC students and the school band. Jayashankar Jayaraman, Advi- sor, hoisted the national flag and com- memorated the celebration. G. Mani, Correspondent, K.K.Ganesh, Princi- pal, S.Rajendran, Vice-Principal, Pro- gramme Coordinator H. Premalatha, teachers and students saluted the na- tional flag and sang the flag song. The patriotic feeling was expressed in the Independence Day speech given by students in Tamil, English and Hin- di. The spectacular classical Bharata natyam, the vibrant patriotic songs of Rabindranath Tagore and Subramania Bharathi, the historical drama on Kat- tabomman, the 75 years achievements of India and the National integration song expressing the unity of Indians in diversity filled everyone’s mind with the pride to be an Indian. On the occasion, school correspon- dent G. Mani, presented certificates to the NCC students. The Independence Day speech given by the School Advi- sor etched patriotism as well as the re- sponsibilities towards strengthening our Nation in future. The celebration ended with the distribution to all. I n grade 10, I started to de- fine a Sanskrit sloka after giving it some thought in class. It clarified that every life form on Earth has qualities of its own. I provided an exam- ple to fully clarify the notion before going into further de- tail. Both a horse and a mule are useful in terms of the labor they perform for man. A horse can run quickly, just as we may do so to get from one area to another. A mule can also be used to transport luggage from one location to another. Following the explanation, I asked the class, "Who are you willing to be?" a mule or a horse? The responses were in- consistent. Some of them want to be mules, while others want to be horses. Some people dream of being horses and mules. A student at the time posed an unexpected question. Could I perhaps have the op- portunity to ride that horse and mule, sir? The entire class was stunned. He mentioned that I can control the horse as I wish. That time one girl got up and asked, sir, could I be a master of that rider? So that I can con- trol the rider, horse and mule? ADHEESH CC, Sanskrit Teacher, Airforce School Coimbatore. Expected questions and unexpected answers Teacher's PEN PEN PEN W ater is the basic necessity for the functioning of all life forms that exist on earth. It is safe to say that water is the reason behind earth being the only planet to support life. This universal solvent is one of the major resources we have on this planet. It is impossible for life to function without water. Af- ter all, it makes for almost 70% of the earth. However, despite its vast abun- dance, water is very much limited. It is a non-renewable resource. In ad- dition, we need to realize the fact that although there is an abundance of water, not all of it is safe to con- sume. We derive some very essential uses from the water on a daily basis. If we talk about our personal lives, water is the foundation of our exis- tence. The human body needs water for the day to day survival. We may be able to survive without any food for a whole week but without water, we won’t even survive for 3 days. More- over, our body itself comprises of 70% water. This, in turn, helps our body to function nor- mally. Thus, the lack of suf- ficient water or the con- sumption of contaminated water can cause serious health problems for humans. Therefore, the amount and quality of water that we consume is essential for our physical health plus fitness. Further, our daily activ- ities are incomplete without water. Whether we talk about getting up in the morning to brush or cook our food, it is equally important. This domestic use of water makes us very dependent on this transpar- ent chemical. In addition, on a large scale, the industries consume a lot of water. They need water for almost every step of their process. It is es- sential for the production of the goods we use every day. If we look beyond human uses, we will realize how wa- ter plays a major role in every living being's life. It is the home of aquatic animals. From a tiny insect to a whale, every organism needs water to sur- vive. Therefore, we see how not only human beings but plants and animals too require water. The earth depends on water to function. We cannot be selfish and use it up for our uses with- out caring about the environment. Save Water! Save Life!. Even when those thoughts make the agony worse, we often say things like "This isn't fair" or "I shouldn't have this prob- lem." We should acknowledge and accept the situation rather than focusing on how we would like something to be different. It will be easier to deal with issues that are out of control if you can learn to accept them. It's simple to think right now, "This isn't fair," yet I did everything right! And we ex- plode. Although sev- eral stars, including batters Virat Kohli and Ro- hit Sharma, are being rested ahead of the Asia Cup in the UAE this month, the tourists are ex- pected to win all three matches in Harare. THIRD IN ODI RANKING India are placed third behind leaders New Zealand and England in the ODI rankings, 10 places above Zimbabwe. Under the guidance of 64-year-old former batting star Houghton, the southern Africa nation have won nine of 11 ODI and Twenty20 internationals. With Houghton in charge, hosts Zimbabwe beat non-Test teams Jer- sey, Singapore, the United States, Papua New Guinea and the Netherlands to qualify for the 2022 T20 World Cup. Higher-ranked Bangladesh were expected to burst the bubble but suffered shock 2-1 losses in both T20 and ODI series. Pakistan- born batsman Sikandar Raza, whose childhood dream to be a fighter pilot was dashed by an eye- sight glitch, played a key role in the ODI series with successive centuries. BRILLIANT SHOTS Houghton said the unbeaten innings of 135 and 117 by the 36-year-old had a knock-on effect as they instilled confidence in his teammates. “Playing alongside Sikandar, Innocent Kaia hit a century in his first ODI, then Regis Chakabva scored his first ODI ton with some brilliant shots.” Although missing Kohli and Sharma, Houghton says there is no such thing as a weak India cricket team. “They could pick four teams and then occupy the first four places in an international tournament. That is how good they are. “However, I told my boys that we dare not become mere spectators in this series while India play all the cricket. We must believe we can win. “The boys know they are far from invincible despite nine victories -- we were 90-9 in our last ODI against Bangladesh before the tail-enders added 61 runs. POOR BATTING STRESSED Houghton pinpointed poor batting starts as a con- cern and vowed to “try and get higher scores from our top order”. Opening batsman and wicket- keeper Chakabva skippers Zimbabwe in place of injured Craig Ervine on Thursday as the home team seek only a fifth ODI victory over India at home in 24 matches. Injuries have also ruled out Blessing Muzarabani (thigh), Tendai Chatara (col- larbone) and Wellington Masakadza (shoulder) while former captain Sean Williams is unavail- able. India had to make a late change to a 16-strong squad with all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed coming in for Washington Sundar, who was injured play- ing English county cricket. KL Rahul, a late in- clusion after recovering from injury and testing positive for coronavirus, leads the tourists. Having started his campaign with vic- tory over world No.4 and the top ranked junior Alireza Firouzja, the 17-year old In- dian prodigy scored the all-important win in the fourth and final game, to hand Giri his second straight loss. Praggnanandhaa, who played a key role in the Indian ‘B’ team’s bronze medal win in the recent chess Olympiad in Ma- habalipuram near Chennai, edged out his Dutch opponent in 81 moves in the fourth game after the first three ended in draws. The Indian GM is now on six points after two wins, the same as world No.1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway , who beat Hans Niemen 3-1. Praggnanandhaa will take on Carlsen in the third round later on Wednesday night. He has beaten the world No.1 twice in online matches recently and has been in good form in the past few months. On the other hand, Spanish teen sensation, Carlos Al- caraz produced a dominant performance against Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-2 to earn his first win in his second Cincin- nati appearance. ADVANCED TO THIRD ROUND The World No. 1 faced a tough test against the Dutch. He made a fast start behind an instant break but had to survive the second set to secure a 6-4, 7-5 victory and advance to the third round in Cincinnati. The second set of the match was hard fought, Medvedev built a lead of a set and a break but immediately surrendered his advantage as van de Zandschulp levelled at 3-3 in the second. The top seed survived thanks to an error from his opponent, then broke for the third time in the match as van de Zandschulp double-faulted three times on serve at 5-all. “The first set was great. Everything was working. I had three games where I had break points but man- aged to break in the first game, which was enough,” said Medvedev. TRICKY FIRST SET “The second set was going not that bad. He was not serving especially well today , doing a lot of double faults. So, I tried to keep pressure and use my chances. Ac- tually, in return, I feel like I did a good job. Two breaks on these fast courts are enough to win and I should have done a little bit better on my serve. But the first match is tricky and I’m happy that I man- aged to go through, and hopefully I will raise my level in the next matches,” he added. He will next face Montreal quar- ter-finalist Tommy Paul or Denis Shapo- valov, with a potential rematch with Kyr- gios looming in the quarterfinals. “I’m really happy with the performance to- day . One of the goals in this tournament is to grow with the pressure... to enjoy as I did at the beginning of the year and last year. To enjoy playing great tennis, to try to be relaxed. I think in this round I did it and I’m really happy with it,” Carlos Alcaraz said. ANI Photo: PTI JOINT PRACTICE SESSION The world never puts a price on you higher than the one you put on yourself. Only at 3-0 after four overs, it got worse for the visitors at 10-1 in six overs fol- lowing Vivian Kingma’s maiden wicket which claimed Imam-ul- Haq (2) leg before wicket on referral by the Netherlands. Opener Fakhar Zaman led the recovery with 109 runs in 109 balls, including 12 fours and a six, before he was run out. Zaman and captain Babar Azam (74 in 85) shared a 168-run part- nership for the second wicket, and Shadab Khan later smashed a 28-ball 48 not out as Pakistan posted a challenging total of 314-6. Dutch pacer Bas de Leede took 2-42 in 10 overs. In reply, the Netherlands came close with 298-8. Dutch captain Scott Edwards was not out on 71 in 60 balls. Opener Vikramjit Singh and No. 5 Tom Cooper both hit 65 runs each. Cooper scored at a much faster pace, needing 54 deliveries for his 65 compared to 98 balls for Singh. Williams fell to 0-2 in matches since announcing “the countdown has begun” on her career, losing 6-4, 6- 0 to U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu in the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday night. Williams said last week in a Vogue magazine essay and an Instagram post that her career was winding down, although she did not explicitly say the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York, would be her last tourna- ment. The Cincinnati event was the second U.S. Open tune-up for Williams, and the next time she takes the court will be at Flushing Meadows.
