As noted by our founder Ove Arup, “... no matter
how wonderful an organisation we can devise,
its success depends on the people working in
it – and for it. Arup allows you to work in a rich
culture that is naturally curious and always
stimulating. We aim for you to enjoy your work
and your leisure, making your journey with
Arup both interesting and worthwhile.’’
Vivid Sydney
UP, and away! Is an invitation to fly. Inspired by the childhood fantasy of flying,
the installation hopes to bring a vivid and dream-like quality of breaking free and
soaring. Sets of wings sit on recycled bicycles inviting passers-by to take a seat and
peddle. The action of peddling illuminates the wings and renders them into lively
psychedelic col ours. Creating an image of the peddler with whimsical wings.

Corporate Social
Responsibility
Arup’s active
engagement with
humanitarian and
charitable causes is
a defining feature
of our firm.
We give money and allow our people to give
their time; we fund staff to provide technical
assistance to humanitarian and development
organizations around the world; and we
encourage our staff at a grassroots level to
undertake networking and education activities
on charitable and community issues.
Each year, we aim to donate a minimum
of 1% of our profits directly to charitable
causes. Our regional Community Partnering
Panel (CPP) is responsible for allocating
donations across a broad range of areas.
During the 2012 financial year
Arup allocated $435,000 to charitable
causes and funding of pro-bono projects.
Arup also raised $29,000 for
charitable causes through staff
donations and fundraising.
Engineers Without Borders, USA
Arup sponsored two members of the San Francisco office to oversee well
drilling in rural Kenya in July. When completed in January 2013, the project
will improve drinking water quality for 500 people and a local health clinic. The
work is part of a greater effort that aims to make clean water accessible at the
three primary schools within the area and potentially work with Kenya’s
Education department to expand the local secondary school.

Arup’s Sustainability Policy calls for a
systematic approach to driving improved
performance in sustainability across all
areas of our organization. It highlights
our objectives and defines the outcomes
we aim to achieve in four key areas:
Our Business
Integrating sustainability into all of our
advice to influence clients, government
and society toward enhanced social,
economic and environmental outcomes.
Our Facilities
Implementation of a regional Environmental
Management System. We measure our carbon
footprint and report our results, managing our
carbon emissions through a strategy focusing
on office energy and business related travel.
Our People
These goals are closely aligned to Arup’s
human resources goals and include increasing
diversity; facilitating work-life balance;
sharing knowledge and skills; encouraging
intellectual growth and stimulation; and
ensuring recognition of our staff contributions
to our clients’ and communities’ sustainability.
Our External Relationships
Active engagement with humanitarian
and charitable causes through giving,
doing and developing, via a number of
active initiatives which allow us to support
communities throughout the world.
Sustainability
Arup’s Sustainability
Policy
OvaGreen is a global network of
environmental volunteers in Arup’s
offices who endorse the Group
Sustainability Policy. They coordinate
environmental initiatives within our
offices, including initiatives such as:
Indoor Environmental Quality
Maximizing daylight and external
views; installing plants in offices.
Energy
Energy efficient equipment and lighting
to reduce energy consumption.
Transport
Cyclist facilities; video conferencing
facilities to reduce need for air travel;
registration of fleet vehicles with
GreenFleet®, which offsets emissions.
Water
Waterless urinals, high efficiency dual flush
toilets, and high efficiency taps to
reduce impact on water consumption.
Materials
Selection of new furniture based on its
certified reduced environmental impact;
energy efficient initiatives such as Green
Star Office Interiors program.

This system presents live data about
paper usage and electricity consumption
and displays public transport options

Arup is committed
to sustaining a
diverse workforce
for the benefits of
creativity, robust
decision-making,
and the interpersonal
engagement that
comes with it.
At Arup, listening to each one’s different
contribution is our collective strength.
Together, we create an inclusive
environment where diversity is embraced
and everyone’s contributions matter.
Arup in the Americas has a comprehensive
Diversity and Inclusion plan with two
primary aspirational goals: that our
diversity better reflect the communities
where we work, and that our people
feel that they belong, are valued, add
value, and are encouraged to thrive.
Ove Arup himself highlighted the importance
of diversity: “unless we feel that we have
a special contribution to make which our
very size and diversity and our whole
outlook can help to achieve, I for one am
not interested.” (1970 Key Speech)

Diversity
“Total Design is
the integration
of the design
and construction
process and the
interdependence of
all the professionals
involved; the creative
and innovative
nature of engineering
design; the value
of ingenuity and
invention and the
social purposes
of design.”
