In the wake of the global financial crisis, a new wave of stakeholder demands has developed calling on
companies to shift focus towards long-term value creation and moving away from a short-term earnings
emphasis. Aligned with these demands, urgent calls for more transparency and improved reporting on
both financial as well as non-financial reports have been made. The objective of this study was to analyze
longitudinal disclosure quality and quantity trends in reporting on long-term value creation of 19
publicly traded Canadian energy and mining companies. Content analysis was conducted in order to
assess disclosure on long-term value creation in annual financial and sustainability reports. The empirical
results show that the companies experienced a substantial increase in the reporting disclosure quality
and quantity. This was true for both disclosure in the annual financial reports as well as in the sus-
tainability reports. These results supported the hypotheses that Canadian public energy and mining
companies had increased their quantity and quality of long-term value creation disclosure in 2014 as
compared to 2012. Even though increases in disclosure quality could be observed (especially in the areas
of governance, responsible work practices, outside relationships and risk management), overall disclo-
sure quality (especially in areas such as connectivity between financials and sustainability sections,
materiality analysis, projects with high climate risk exposure, cost of energy, responsible work practices,

Key messages of Policy Brief #1:
1. The Earth system has entered a new phase in which human actions are threatening the planet's life support systems and drawing down the planet's natural capital in an unsustainable manner. It is essential that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reconfirm the commitments of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) focused on human wellbeing by alleviating poverty, enhancing food and water security, and improving health. But the SDGs must also address issues of Earth system governance and the challenge of redirecting unsustainable practices of individuals, groups, and countries worldwide.
2. The way forward is to adopt a multi-layered approach encompassing:
Global goals to maintain planetary scale processes in a safe, just and sustainable space.
Individual goals and targets framed in such a way that they can serve as focal points for a wide range of stakeholders.
Targets framed in global terms but - where possible and relevant - tailored at regional, national, local, or corporate/organizational levels to provide a menu of options allowing actors with different needs and capabilities to select those best suited for them.
Indicators and monitoring capabilities with the capacity to track change and report on progress.
3. The formulation of the SDGs offers rich opportunities to bridge gaps among sectoral silos by framing goals that are cross-cutting and integrative in nature and, if achieved, meet current needs articulated in the MDGs while ensuring that future generations can meet their own needs continuously. A well-designed performance review system, such as a "Global Sustainable Development Report" and comparable reporting mechanisms at the national level, and roles given to actors beyond national states will be essential, given the complexity of the agenda and the need for accountable implementation. For the review of SDGs, one new dimension needed is to include monitoring the key aspects of Earth system transformation.
Reflection 1

Paris Climate Agreement from 2015 gives a reason for hope to the mankind. The global community came together and brought forward a common set of ambitious objectives to curb further emissions of the greenhouse gas (GHG) and ameliorate
potential consequential impact of the climate change. Indeed, every global challenge needs no less than a global approach. This agreement is therefore a right step in a right direction for this reason. Just three years later, His Excellency Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General, urged all member states once again at the beginning of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly to remain committed to the
course of this agreement (United Nations Secretary General, 2018). His message to all unequivocally even earnestly appealed for stronger contributions toward the collective goals. One plausibly infers that success of this collective effort depends on how the global community chooses to advance this course with a good sense of rationality. This is a leadership challenge. How should the global community engage the sense of choice rationality as fundamentals of collective progress? How could this effort take a moral highground to advance this leadership effort at meaningful and moral frontiers? The implementations of Sweden's environmental goals in Swedish Lappland are not succeeding due to issues of legitimacy, credibility and lack of local participation. Systems analysis revealed that unresolved social issues of governance prevent addressing environmental objectives. Specifically, a history of abuse and misuse of governmental power has continued, creating confusion over land rights and questioning the legitimacy of state authorities. Environmental goals cannot be implemented until underlying social trust and credibility are restored through greater local participation and resolution of governance issues.
Work Package 3
This document outlines the work to be done in Work Package 3 of the CONVERGE project. WP3 will develop a holistic indicator framework to measure convergence based on sustainability principles and existing indicator frameworks. It will create a hierarchical list of impact issues and key indicators to assess sustainable development. WP3 will also develop a methodological tool to integrate these indicators into an adaptive decision support process by enhancing the DPSIR model with system dynamics and backcasting methodologies. This will allow testing and refinement of the indicator framework based on community case studies to create a robust tool to help decision makers understand policy impacts.
