WKU Mission Statement
Western Kentucky University (WKU) prepares
students of all backgrounds to be productive,
engaged, and socially responsible citizen-
leaders of a global society. The University
provides research, service and lifelong learning
opportunities for its students, faculty, and other
constituents. WKU enriches the quality of life for
those within its reach.

• Create a practical and 10-year revisable roadmap for the future
• Use data to inform strategic choices
• Incorporate performance funding metrics
• Revise the budget model to ensure resources are deployed in
support of institutional priorities

WKU Strategic Planning Kick-Off

  • 2. WKU Mission Statement Western Kentucky University (WKU) prepares students of all backgrounds to be productive, engaged, and socially responsible citizen- leaders of a global society. The University provides research, service and lifelong learning opportunities for its students, faculty, and other constituents. WKU enriches the quality of life for those within its reach.
  • 3. Transition to a Shared Mission WKU’s mission as a student-centered applied research university is to better our region, the Commonwealth, our nation and the world by inspiring innovation, elevating communities and transforming lives.
  • 4. • Improve student learning • Engage every stakeholder group in meaningful conversations • Articulate persuasively our shared aspirations for WKU • Create a practical and 10-year revisable roadmap for the future • Use data to inform strategic choices • Incorporate performance funding metrics • Revise the budget model to ensure resources are deployed in support of institutional priorities Strategic Planning Goals
  • 5. • Two co-chairs, plus the WKU President • One committee with 7-10 members • 4-6 working groups with two co-chairs and 8-10 members each • Engagement and inclusion of every major stakeholder group Steering Committee
  • 6. • Academic Innovation and Excellence • Student Success and Experience • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion • Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors • Budgeting, Efficiency and Infrastructure Working Groups
  • 7. • August/September 2017 – Co-Chair announced and process detailed • September 2017 – Steering Committee and Working Groups Assembled • October 2017 – Presidential charge and guiding principles given to committee and groups • October-December 2017 – Data collection, assessment of strengths, challenges, opportunities and weaknesses, emerging themes and drafting of preliminary reports Timeline
  • 8. • January 2018 – Open Forums and Feedback • January 2018 – Revisions and incorporation of feedback • February 2018 – Working groups present draft recommendations to steering committee • March 2018 – Steering committee compiles and distills working group recommendations into draft plan Timeline Cont.
  • 9. • April 2018 – Steering committee presents draft plan to WKU community for feedback • May-June 2018 – Draft plan revised based upon community feedback • Early-August 2018 – Final plan presented to WKU Board of Regents for approval • August 2018 – Strategic Plan Implementation Launches Timeline Cont.
