3. Windows 8
• A hybrid operating system that is designed to run
on tablets ( touch based ) & traditional computers
• Windows 8.1 is the stable version of this operating
system , think of it as the Windows XP Service Pack
2 equivalent
4. Microsoft Account
• You will need a Microsoft account
• Outlook.com
• live.com
• Enables you to sync your account , reset
password , settings across all Windows 8 pcs
• Gives you access to OneDrive
• Local account - if you don’t want an online
Microsoft Account
5. Local Account
• You will get the option of signing in to your
Microsoft account or creating a new one
• If you go to create a new one it will give you the
option of signing into a local account
• This is important on the change from Windows 8 to
Windows 8.1
6. Moving From
• Windows XP - back up , format , reload
• Windows Vista - back up , format , reload
• Windows 7 to Windows 8 - in place upgrade
• Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 - back up , format ,
reload ( programs ) – in place upgrade will keep
your documents

• Smart Search
• OneDrive
• Customise desktop
• Skype - calls , messaging

• 7GB of online storage - free
• Think of it as you’re my Documents in “ The Cloud “
• Change on your computer – changes in the cloud
• Access your files from any computer
14. File Explorer
• A folder is a storage area on a drive
• A library is a super folder holding many folders - my
music , my documents etc
• Right click inside a folder to create a new folder
16. The Tiled Desktop
• Think of it as your old start screen
• Move what you use to the left hand side of the
screen
• Change the size of the tiles -
17. Windows Search
• Search for anything on your computer and inside
your filing system / internet
18. Change File Associations
• Windows 8 will assign , certain software to open
certain files
• PDF can open with the built in Reader or Adobe if
you download and install
• Right click and decide on default program
20. Create Shortcuts To
Programs On Desktop
• Put the program in the task bar first - done from the
tiled start screen
• Then press shift while right clicking brings up the
option to send to desktop as a shortcut
33. When All Else Fails
• Press The Windows Key - returns you to the front
tiled screen

• One day disaster will strike
• Windows 8.1 has a built in backup
• Open Control Panel – File History
• Plug in external hard drive
• Will backup your libraries , desktop , contact ,
favourites
35. If Things Go Wrong
• Reset or refresh your computer
• Go to settings - change PC settings - update and recovery
• 3 options
• Refresh Your PC without affecting your files
• Remove everything & reinstall
• Advanced Start Up
36. Computer Infections
• Do not click links in emails
• “If you don’t think it was meant for you it probably wasn’t”
• Keep your system up to date – Windows and software
• Out of date software is a risk – Windows XP , Adobe , Java
• Your antivirus is the last link in the chain
• Run as a standard user
