William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England in 1564 to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. He was the eldest of eight siblings. His parents were unable to read or write. Shakespeare likely attended the local grammar school where he studied theater, Latin, literature and history. After finishing school, he probably worked as his father's apprentice.
