Comparing Study Designs for Citation Bias
In an explanatory research design, the most likely kind of bias is the citation type. In citation bias,
researchers may be reluctant to publish some discouraging findings, especially if they believe that
they may tarnish their reputations or personal abilities and affect the effectiveness of their products.
For that reason, citation bias makes researchers submit positive results only for publication, while
suppressing negative findings. In most cases, the motive of citation bias is to gain popularity or self
appraisal (Riegelman, 2005). Positive results, also known as statistically significant findings, may
include results that show that a certain intervention is functioning well.
Citation bias is likely to be encountered in explanatory research designs because through them,
causal hypotheses can be investigated, analyzed, tested, and published. Explanatory research
investigates why certain variables are related and it tries to look into the causes of certain
phenomena. However, in the process of publication of the findings, some researchers are likely to
concentrate on positive results alone and ignore the negative ones (Riegelman, 2005).
Citation bias may be common in medical research studies, especially in those that try to find the
cure for a significantly important or mysterious pathogen. In this case, only the positive sides of
the results are likely to be published. For example, a potential drug against a certain intractable
virus, which has been researched on, is

English Essay Mister Pip
Analyse how contrast between characters helped the author communicate an important message or
idea.
Mister Pip written by Lloyd Jones is a novel recounted by the protagonist Matilda. Set in 1990 s
Bougainville, we see Matilda begin to question her Mother s traditional idea s about life as a civil
war rages between the rebels and the Redskins in her homeland. Mr. Wattsor Pop eye is given the
role teaching the village children, being the only educated, and consequentially, white man left on
the island. He begins reading Great Expectations to the children and Matilda finds herself becoming
entranced in white civilisation. She gets immersed in the story of the white boy Pip living in
London in the 1800 s, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She continues to try and save her daughter, the power of unconditional love overcoming their even
more obviously marked differences.
Dolores then tries to impose her faith on Matilda in hope she will begin to value God over Great
Expectations to lead her away from the white world. Dolores comes unannounced to Matilda s
class and tries to educate the children on the only thing she knows well: the importance of faith
she didn t know anything outside what she knew from the bible but as Mr. Watts gets further
through the novel Pip becomes yet even more important to Matilda. Dolores never stops in trying
to steer Matilda away from the white world. The world she knows barely anything about, the
world she thinks is evil. Despite their ever increasing differences Dolores will always continue to
protect Matilda from what she believes is bad.
We see the power of unconditional love shown again through Matilda and Dolores s contrast
when Matilda discovers Great Expectations to have been stolen by her Mother. When Dolores
hides Great Expectations much strife is caused. The Red Skins visit Matilda s island,
threatening to burn all of their possessions unless they give up Pip who is only a character from
a book and cannot be given up. Because the book is not where it is supposed to be Pip cannot be
explained. The redskins burn the whole villages possessions because Dolores fails to come
forward and admit to what she had done in order to retrieve

Discrimination against African Americans in The Invisible Man
In the 1950s African Americans were treated unfairly and discriminated against. During the post
civil war time tensions were still high, the discrimination and separation between the blacks and
whites was still prevalent. Discrimination is portrayed through Jim Crow laws, which affected
every African Americantremendously, the narrator s experience at the Battle Royal, and the
narrator s transition from the black college to New York and The Brotherhood. In the Invisible
Man, Ellison utilizes characterization to represent the division between whites and blacks in
America in the 1950s.

Before the fighting the white women were presented as the forbidden fruit. The Battle Royal
incident showed the white women being paraded before the black boys as something to look at,
to admire, and to desire, but not to touch (Sistrunk Krakue 1). Sistrunk Krakue describes the
white women in the novel as royalty, like prized possessions, as if this was a once in a lifetime
opportunity to see these women. These women are presented as dreams because the description
includes admiration, desire, but something they can t actually attain. The white women show
division of social classes because they looked around with their impersonal eyes (Ellison 19).
The eyes give away the fact that the women don t even acknowledge anyone around them, they
are just doing what they re order to do by the wealthy white men. Sistrunk Krakue s idea of
dreaminess and royalty of the white women places them on an entirely different social platform,
one that would be an impossible feat for a black boy. This judgment of the white women further
explains the disrespect that blacks receive in society and how they re judged in most every facet of
life.
Within Invisible Man, judgment of races is a commonplace in society, Ellison exemplifies this point
by starting the novel with a presentation of judgment between races. The town s privileged white
men invite the narrator to give his prestigious speech at their

Narcissist Personality Disorder
Narcissism is a disorder which summed up is just only caring about yourself, but i m not able to
just sum it up like that am I :) . It is a personality disorder that leads you to be more interested into
oneself then the surrounding people or anyone for that matter. This term came from the greek gods
when one god fell in love with himself through a reflection. Traits are An obvious self focus in
interpersonal exchanges, problems in sustaining satisfying relationships, a lack of psychological
awareness, and difficulty with empathy. This personality disorderis estimated to be in about 1% of

The concept of excessive selfishness has been recognized throughout history. In ancient Greece the
concept was understood as hubris. It is only more recently that narcissism has been defined in
psychological terms. Healthy narcissism forms a constant, realistic self interest and mature goals
and principles and an ability to form deep relations to an something. Within psychology, there are
two main branches of research into narcissism: clinical and social psychology. These approaches
differ in their view of narcissism, with the former treating it as a disorder, thus as discrete, and the
latter treating it as a personality trait, thus as a continuum. These two strands of research tend
loosely to stand in a divergent relation to one another, although they converge in places. Self
regulation in narcissists involves such things as striving to make one s self look and feel positive,
special, successful and important. It comes in both intrapsychic, such as blaming a situation rather
than self for failure, and interpersonal forms, such as using a relationship to serve one s own self.
Some differences in self regulation between narcissists and non narcissists can be seen with

Martin Luther And John Calvin Essay
The Renaissance was a time where individuals questioned numerous aspects of European culture
and society, which have collectively broadened the worldview from medieval to modern. As such, a
new wave of theological thinking emerged from the dissent of the late Medieval church, and this is
commonly known as the Reformation. Martin Luther is often credited as the Great Man whose
Ninety Five Thesis a provocative set of questions targeting the Church set in motion the pivotal
process of religious change, known as Protestantism. The radical change from medieval Christianity
to modern Christianity is often confined to the ideas of two important men: Martin Luther and John
Calvin. It is also important to note the vastness of time that the Renaissance dominated compared to
the short period within 1517 to 1559 that these two reformers lived. Yet without them, without the
challenging and convincing religious arguments and questions they put forward justification by
faith alone, the doctrine of double predestination the religious change as seen in the sixteenth
century, as well as even the name of the movement could ve been very different.
In the year 1509, the year in which John Calvin was born, Martin Luther had already begun
spreading his teachings. By the age of eight, Martin Luther had publicized his Ninety Five Thesis
and the German Reformation had already seen the culmination of Luther s teachers and influence.
During the time of Calvin s first published book, Luther

Rachel Nelson
April 19, 2017 Visuality, defined in a most straight forward way, is the quality or state of being
visual or a mental image or picture relates to the process of glimpsing with the eyes. Even though
the term encompasses a broad array of explanation and it conveys different things to different
people, it relates with the prism with which people construe the world. It applies to both tangible
and intangible and depending on one s ability to exploit the visual senses. Visuality plays an
integral role as a cultural tool in the society. In the contemporary context, it refers to the manner in

as visual perception work in the same ways however the paradigmatic understanding of the

about the concepts with which that person s social group has become associated. The presence

thinking about a Black person renders these concepts more accessible and can lead people to
misremember the Black person as the one holding the razor. Merely on the sight of blacks can lead

A study concerned with the possible connections between children s behavior and reading banned
books focused on the potential influence that such books have on civic behaviors, mental health
problems, students grade point averages, and violent and non violent crime. Findings suggest that
consumption of banned books promoted civic behavior and had no effect on grade point
averages and criminal activity, but increased the internalizing and externalizing mental health
symptoms. The potential correlation between increased symptoms of mental health issues and
banned book reading existed within a small subset of the subjects and cannot be proven to be
substantial. Overall, banned books seem to have little to no negative effect on the majority of
children and foster increased civic behaviors (Ferguson). While the motivation behind banning
books seems logical and justified, in reality, books have no substantial negative effects on most
children. In all actuality, banned books foster increased positive, civic behaviors, likely because
they teach children tolerance by exposing them to diverse characters and humanizes groups
whose lifestyle choices they may be unfamiliar and innately uncomfortable with. The Perks of

Essay On Smoking In Public Places
1) Context:
Ban Smoking in Public Places
The health hazards of smoking have never been unknown. There has been enough scientific
evidence to prove that smokers, on an average, have shorter life spans than non smokers. This is
caused by various lung and cardiovascular problems that are caused by cigarette smoking. However,
what may go unnoticed at times is the agonizing effect that the act of smoking has on non smokers.
For this reason, I am referring to second hand smoking or also known as passive smoking, which is
when someone inhales smoke from another person s cigarette. This situation becomes
unmanageable when it occurs in a public place while having no control over it. Although, there are
two types of public environments that become ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the ban were to take place, it would cause consumers to look for a potential smoking area prior
to smoking, which leads the buying potential to have a negative effect and it would diminish over
a period of time. When people have to look for a smoking area prior to smoking, the buying
potential has a negative effect and it diminishes over a period of time. However, this may become a
concern for the sellers, and even though they might support the cause on an ethical level, they will
withstand the ban, due to a business perspective.
The ban will also have an effect on the customers, as now everyday smokers would have to go
through the struggle of finding a designated smoking area to smoke even a single cigarette. This
will affect his or her smoking habits in one of the two ways; the first possible outcome could be
him or her struggling to find a place to smoke every time, which can decrease the frequency of
smoking. This, in fact will affect the amount of money they spend on cigarettes. Which in fact,
could also have a positive impact on people with families and children. The second possible
outcome could be; that since a person cannot smoke in public places, he or she might go home and
smoke all their cigarettes, thus affecting their family and children in a negative way. All things
considered, smoking indoors and outdoors affects someone in a negative way, which puts another s
life in danger. Cigarette manufacturing companies will most likely be

The Underdog Man Quotes
Should a boy be considered a man because of his age?
In the novel, The Underdog by Markus Zusak, Cameron Wolfe explores adolescence through the
events and people in his life during one winter. The question, Should a boy be considered a man
because of his age? is a difficult one; one that does not have a straightforward answer and is not
clearly answered in the novel. White Australian society deems that a boy is a man at the age of
eighteen. In other cultures, manhood is recognised after a boy completes a ritual. Manhood is a
lot of things; the least of which has to do with age. When a person is respectful, responsible and

The Levels Of Government In The United States
The government affects Americans in several ways that many fail to realize. One could not walk
down the street without seeing the government s effect on our everyday lives. The questions we
may have though are what are the levels of government? What is federalism? How does the
government affect individuals every day? Do we need government? Do Americans appreciate the
importance of our government? These are all questions that will be answered for we as individuals
must understand how this government works before we can make a difference in bettering this
country. The spheres (Levels) of government include National, State (Provincial), and Local. It is
these three spheres of government that affect our day to day life. The national government provides
the states with protection, enough power to maintain foreign policy, and the ability to collect taxes.
The state government as stated in the federalist papers State Governments, will have the advantage
with regard to the predilection and support of the people. (Hamilton, Jay, Madison 259), for the

Alzheimer s Disease ( Ad ) Is A Neurodegenerative...
Alzheimer s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition that affects the memory function, which
is a huge public health concern among the elderly population. It has affected more than five million
individuals in the United States and that number is expected to quadruple by the 2050 if
interventions are not found. AD has a huge affect on the world not only by the number of deaths
that it is causing but also the amount of health care costs reaching around 100 billion dollars.
Because of the increase of AD throughout the globe, the aging population should consider the
intake of certain vitamins and nutrients in their daily lives to possibly reduce or prevent the onset
of AD. Nutritional factors and nutritional deficiencies have a very strong correlation with cognitive
decline as illustrated throughout the study done by Angelo Parigi, Francesco Panza, Cristiano
Capurso, and Vincenzo Solfrizzi. Ones dietary habits and nutritional deficiencies have a huge
determining factor on cognitive impairment on an individual with AD. B vitamins have a
relationship with cognitive dysfunction in many observational studies as well as clinical and
epidemiological studies. Another type of vitaminthat was found to correspond with cognitive
impairment is folate (B9) and cobalamine (B12), the studies that were done on these two types of
vitamins did find the determinants with cognitive impairment in AD. The elderly populations is
among the highest at risk for nutritional deficiencies, with

The Landlady Compare And Contrast
What s the best horror story you ve ever read? And you ever compared them and or contrasted
them? Well in this project you ll read about how to compare and contrast great books and short
stories like Tell Tale Heart and The Landlady . You can find out how to do a t chart as well as a
venn diagram in this essay. Also in this compare and contrast this will be telling you about the
stories that are being compared and contrasted.I will also tell you my opinion on these magnificent
short stories.
Tell Tale Heart is a great short horror story all about a butler who is mad about his master s eye
which has a rare disease that makes it a faded blue. It basically makes the butler completely insane
it would haunt him in his sleep so he got a small light and tried to fix it without having to kill the
master. But eventually the butler got caught and the master sat up and looked at the door with the
butler there not moving at all.A few moments later the butler went insane and hit his master right in
the head and knocked the poor old man out then pushed his bead on top of him and jumped onto
the bead killing the old man. After that he cut up the body and completely dismembered it into
many pieces in a bathtub so he could just wash the blood down the drain. But as the butler was

into both of the stories. They also both acted like they were pretty trusting people so they were

Use of Technology in Election Campaigns
Role of Internet in 2008
Social media
Social media played a vital role in 2008 U.S. President Elections. Using of Social networking
websites like Facebook, Twitter, You tube was adapted by the political parties and influenced them
to use social media in order to reach people effectively in U.S.
Presidential Elections in 2008 has changed the way of campaigning and expressing effectively.
Digital technology allowed leaders to interact with voters, transforming the campaigning totally into
a new level. Both the lead contenders Barack Obama and John McCain engaged with people by
using Social media. But there were many apparent discrepancies between Obama s use and his
opposition use of social media as their medium to communicate with people.
Obama s use of Social media in 2008 election campaign can be compared to former President
John F. Kennedy s use of television. Besides using email and website, Obama focused on Social
Media to activate the young voters. His extensive use of Social Media appeared to be the major
factor in his victory over John McCain in 2008. Obama had 2 million Facebook friends while
McCain had only 600,000. Obama spent millions on advertising in Facebook and Google to grab
attention of voters whereas, McCain used television advertisements. Obama focused on Social
media sites to pass on the information to the millions of volunteers and to get the donations, the
campaign used Social networking sites to connect with voters and supporters. Obama

Pages. Book obtained through Amazon. Alfred Crosby shares the events that follow Christopher
Columbus arrival at the Bahamas in 1492. Through this non fiction work, readers can stay informed
about the details that affect our life. Regarding Crosby, his credentials can be found on the page
titled About the Author at the end of his book: Alfred W. Crosby, Jr., is Professor Emeritus of
American Studies, History, and Geography at the University of Texas, Austin. His field of expertise
qualifies him to write on the subject, the Columbian exchange. He presents facts with items such as
quotes, statistics, and past occurrences. It is clear that Crosby has done a significant amount of
research because he acknowledges the grant that Washington State University provided and his
bibliography is sixteen pages long. The techniques authors adopt are important because they
contribute to the writing style. Throughout most of the book, I am able to comprehend the
language easily. Although I did encounter medical and scientific terms that I had to confirm the
meaning of. It seems as though Crosby tends to get carried away with the usage of statistics when
he gets the chance. Constantly supplying numbers doesn t give the reader enough time to digest the
information. Not only that, but I found myself

Medicinal plants are used traditionally in the treatment of various kinds of diseases since time
immemorial. The present study was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant
activities of leaves from Elephantopus scaber by using different solvents (ethyl alcohol, acetone and
aqueous). The ethyl alcohol, acetone and aqueous extracts of leaves were subjected to
phytochemical analyses, which revealed the presence of alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, saponins,
steroids, tannins, coumarins, quinones and glycosides in most of the selected of leaves useing
different solvents. Ethyl alcohol ,acetone and aqueous extracts of leaves were investigated for in
vitro antimicrobialactivity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhis, Klebsiella pneumonia,
Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida Albican by well diffusion method
by using a different concentrations (20, 40, 60, 80, 100)mg/ml. Ethyl alcohol and acetone
extract of leaves showed promising antimicrobial activity against all test organisms. Ethyl
alcohol of leaves has the best activity against all test organisms. Found a high effective for ethyl
alcohol extract of leaves compared with the other parameters, also it was recorded a high increase

The Floridan Aquifer
The Floridan Aquifer
Water is an endless cycle that repeats itself but doesn t necessarily remain drinkable. Rain feeds
vegetation, evaporation occurs, and then returns to rivers, streams, and lakes and may seep into
rocks and caves underground through limestone and into aquifers. It may take many years before
it reaches the surface. Water is a valuable resource that people tend to mishandle and take for
granted. Explorers have dove into the paths underground to trace paths of water that flow deep
under homes, streets, cities, and pastures only to surface a dirty and contaminated pond. Inside
these deep paths explorers have found tires, oil barrels and chemical containers that most people
are unaware of. Over 8 billion gallons of water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Stereotypes, Prejudice, And Prejudice
In recent discussions of American Born Chinese, a controversial issue has been whether
Yang represents the stereotype successfully on his book or not. On the one hand, some argue
that he go a little off from his main point from his book. From this perspective, many people
found the book that it is not good enough to read. On the other hand, however, others insist that
Yang did a great job on representing stereotypes, which makes his book very powerful and
interesting to read. In the words of one of this view s proponents, I had heard about stereotypes,
but never really fully understood them. This book has taught me to at least get a little grasp on the
pain and hurt that stereotypes can really cause. (Printz p.g 11). According to this view, many
people really got the meaning of stereotypes by reading American Born Chines. In sum, then, the
issue is whether Yang represents the stereotypes well enough in his book or not. My own view is
that Yang successfully stated stereotypes in his book that made it a powerful book. After, all, I have
chosen to identify as a college student at Winona State University. Though I concede that Yang
could ended his book differently to make it more interesting, but I still maintain that he stated the
stereotype successfully because he made it clear enough to the reader to see the stereotypes from
the text and images and using three different stories in the same book. Combining texts and images
to clarify stereotypes to the reader was an

Heavy Metal Assessment Of Cosmetic Products Essay
Heavy metal assessment of some cosmetic products by ICP/OES
Abstract:
It has been shown that heavy metals toxicity to humans is as a result of long term or high level
exposure to pollutants common in the environment including the air, water, food and numerous
consumer products such as the cosmetics and toiletries. Cosmetics are seen as one of the most
important sources of releasing heavy metals into the environment and the human biological
system. Thus Cosmetic products must not be harmful under normal or foreseeable conditions of
use. Four different samples of cosmetics (Foundation, Kohl, Blusher, and Lipstick) were
analyzed in Al Madina SAES laboratory for water and food analysis to determine the levels of
heavy metals (As, Pb, Zn, Hg, and Cu) in the products. Concentrations of the selected heavy metals
were determined by using inductively coupled plasma/optical emission spectroscopy (ICP/OES).
As and Cu were not found in all samples except in foundation sample found in concentration
0.0056 ppm for as and 0.006116 ppm for Cu, lead ranged between 0.03 0.92 ppm. Mercury ranged
between 0.04 1.49 ppm, and Zinc ranged between 0.026 0.091ppm.
1. Introduction: Personal care products and facial cosmetics are commonly used by millions of
consumers on a daily basis. These products are directly applied to human skin and mainly produce
local exposure to certain ingredients. Numerous consumer products like cosmetics and toiletries
have been reported as a source of heavy metal

Female Gender Roles In The Movie Mulan
Hello everyone,
For todayВґs presentation, IВґm going to present an animated film that some of you are probably
familiar with. This film is called Mulan as you can see from the pictures set up.
Mulan is an animated film made in 1998 produced by Disney studio. The film describes a
traditional society that is set in China during an invasion caused by a tribe known as the Huns.
Shortly after the invasion, the emperor of China compels every male member in a family to serve
in the army. Being the only child and for that matter a girl, Mulan, the protagonist of the story,
disguise herself as a man by taking her fatherВґs armor and sword and heads towards the war in her

The line also highlights the societyВґs value in women which is that the outer appearance is what
matters and nothing else. In terms of the audience, the metaphor of the phrase sow s ear into a
silk purse appeals to their imagination and consequently creates this vivid image in their mind
of what a woman should resemble. The following line further explains how the beauty can be
achieved when the woman says We ll have you washed and dried Primped and polished till you
glow with pride Trust my recipe for instant bride, You ll bring honor to us all . This line tells us
that women can only be proud and have pride by being beautified and in so doing this, they can
captivate a manВґs heart. For this reason, it proposes the idea that it takes more than the natural
beauty to be recognized by men. Because of this, I believe, the song gets across a message to
girls at young age to wear make up making them more insecure in their own skin. The alliteration
of the phrase primped and polished till you glow with pride also creates this musical rhythm of the
song and makes it catchier and memorable for the

The Victorian Er Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender...
The Victorian Era: Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender Roles In 1868, British author Wilkie
Collins wrote what is now famously known as one of the first full length detective stories, The
Moonstone. Within this text, he explores and transcends his writing style, as he created an
atmosphere full of suspense and gothic tradition by making use of two genres famous in the
Victorian Era (Ayton, 2). As Collins managed to challenge the roles of men and women within The
Moonstone, he ultimately attempts to reverse genders by creating a story of conflict, where the
women are essentially in charge. As many genderstereotypes are expressed within The Moonstone
through the different narrators of the novel, almost all of them become discredited as we are
introduced to the other characters. By making use of the characters like Betteredge, Lady
Verinder, and finally Rachel Verinder, Collins novel proves to break society s barrier of expected
roles for men and women within the Victorian Era. During the Victorian period, men and women s
roles became more sharply defined than at any time in history. This concept of roles, became
extremely significant within Wilkie Collins The Moonstone (1868), as he incorporated the issues
seen during that era, with the roles and expectations of the women in his novel. Because many of
the women seen throughout Collins novel are more assertive than one would expect from a
Victorian novelist, Collins shows women acting forcefully on their own, which

In addition, not possessing mobile phone/s is higher in the age bracket 15 16 year olds when

markedly rapid during the latter half of the 1990s. Young people have created and developed a
communication culture that incorporates many special features, such as a rise in the use of text
based communication channels. Teenagers intersecting and selective use of communication
channels has generated multimedia communication. From the theoretical standpoint provided
by symbolic interactions, we can ask whether communication through new media technologies
generates new forms of social interaction. If this is the case, how could we describe and analyze
these new forms of interaction? The media landscapes created by teenagers serve to articulate
their personal space, as well as enabling their presentation of self and defining their relationships
to others. The quality of sleep of almost half of 16 year olds may be affected by text messaging

adaptation has been undertaken more than once in the history of the Cheloniidae family. Marine
reptiles were particularly successful in the Mesozoic as major predators in the sea. Mesozoic
marine reptiles explored a variety of swimming styles and diets that included fish, cephalopods,
other vertebrates, and hard shelled invertebrates (Motani 2009). The earliest marine turtles
appeared in the Jurassic and were a marine species of the family Pleurosternidae known as

Two lineages of sea turtle survived through the Eocene Epoch 55 to 38 millions years ago
(Bowen 2003). One lineage was the predecessor of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys

six species of the family Cheloniidae, one of which is the loggerhead sea turtle (Bowen 2003).
Today, only seven or eight species of marine turtles survive, distributed unevenly through all
three tropical oceans. The modern decline in sea turtles species is not due to inherently poor
adaption to post Pleistocene conditions, but is mainly a result of current and past anthropogenic
exploitation. Additionally, the greater diversity of sea turtle taxa in the past compared to today
is also due to the disappearance of entire isolated oceans such as the Nirobrara Sea, which was
once inhabited by a diversity of seat turtle species. It is also due to other evolutionary
mechanisms. Early sea turtle lineages had a growth of experimental type species that were more
specialized, and these eventually became narrowed down to modern species as overspecialized
species had a poor response to changing

Statistical And Non Probabilistic Methods
3.7 Sampling Procedures and Techniques.
3.7.1 Sampling Method
The researcher will be using a combination of both probabilistic and non probabilistic method as the
research is largely qualitative in nature but there are elements of a quantitative nature. By using a
combination of sampling methods it will allow the research to be more realistic and not skewed.
The researcher will apply a non probability purposive method and using the Heterogeneous
sampling technique while analyzing the phenomenon at InterChem Limited as well as a probability
technique of a cluster to ascertain the influence of strategic innovation in the SME sector.
3.7.2 Sample Size
The researcher will be using a census as a result of the population size to ascertain the influence of
strategic innovation on Interchem. According to the central limit theorem which states that if the
minimum number with the sample is 50 or less then a census should be conducted. This is the
most appropriate technique to use due to the size of the population. The population at InterChem
limited is below 30 and they will be developed as the sample frame. The nature of this research is a
case study of Interchem Limited and how strategic innovation can influences it as an SME.

Ethnic Stereotypes Essay
Asians can t drive. All Black men walking down dark streets are muggers. All Hispanics are
undocumented. Guys are messy and unclean. Women aren t as a smart as men. Our society has
garnered a generalized model of how people of a certain race, ethnicity, or gender behave, and they
are often based on prejudices and erroneous patterns that describe a small niche within the targeted
group of people. Stereotypes alienate people from either their raceor gender and instigate
misidentification. I ve been generalized under the assumption that I am a soccer loving, spicy taco

How can you not tolerate spicy foods? One major generalization under the umbrella of ethnic
stereotypes is that all people of Hispanic descent were domesticated from birth to tolerant spicy
foods. Although, foods engulfed in paprika and hot chili peppers are mostly found in Central
American cultures, more specifically in Mexico. When my family moved to the United States, we
were exposed to the amalgam of cultures that compile Rockville. Diversity was scarce in
Venezuela, and this ethnic diversity introduced us to cultures outside of our limited scope.
Within the first few months, my parents were introduced to a family who I distinctly remember
kept close ties to their Mexican culture. I was amazed at the high tolerance the kids my age or
younger had for chili peppers. A couple of them sat cross legged on the floor sucking on their
chili lollipops, while others palmed the bottoms of Tabasco bottles onto their scrambled eggs. All
Hispanic people must love spicy foods is a stereotype that misidentifies people of Latin American
descent. This fallacy is under the erroneous assumption that all Spanish speaking cultures enjoy the
unforgiving, tongue biting, and stomach eating spices that are the backbone to the Mexican
cuisine. This stereotype has singled me out my ethnic background and paired me with a different
cultural background I am socially expected to belong

The Giver Word Analysis
In the Giver the community has many weirdly spoken words. These words can mean many things,
but to the community these words are nothing out of the ordinary. Everyone there is used to
hearing these words and is not startled by them. In the real world an average person would have
no idea what some of these words mean. For example Stirrings, comfort object, and Nurturer. In
these strange peoples community these are everyday words, but to ordinary people, they are very
odd. Stirrings is very serious in the community, so is being a Nurturer. Every living child in the
community is given a comfort item until the age of eight. Although, having a comfort item is not
that unusual like the other two words, most children have items they go to sleep with every night.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy And Reality Therapy
My personal model is growing and changing as I am learning more and developing as a social
worker. At this point, my personal model pulls ideas from cognitive behavioral therapy and reality
therapy. Though my model is still evolving, I feel as though the basis of my thoughts and beliefs
are sound. The goal of cognitive behavioral therapyis to have a structured, short term, present
oriented psychotherapyfor depression, directed toward solving current problems and modifying
dysfunctional thinking and behavior (Beck, 1995, p. 1). It has been shown successful in not only
treating depression, but also a wide range of psychiatric disorders in various client populations.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is based on the cognitive model, which assumes that dysfunctional
thinking is common to psychological disturbances. Realistic modifications of thinking can result in
an overall improvement of mood and behaviors. These improvements ultimately come from the
modification of the patient s fundamental dysfunctional beliefs (Beck, 1995). Beck (1995) writes
how cognitive therapy is based on the cognitive model. This is how an individual s thoughts,
emotions, and behaviors play into their interpretation of events. The way people emotionally react
and respond to a situation is based on how they interpret a situation rather than the situation itself.
The initial reaction thoughts are called automatic thoughts. These thoughts stem from beliefs. They
are situation specific and are considered

particular group or ideal and are left out because they are different. Some may argue that they are
excluded because they are misunderstood, but that is not the case. The short story The
Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka, the video Franz Kafka and Metamorphosis by BBC, and personal
experience prove that people are excluded because they are different from what is considered
normal, and not due to a misunderstanding or being misjudged.
In the short story The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka, the main character, Gregor, is turned into
a beetle and is excluded by his family. The reason for his exclusion was because he was different.
He could no longer speak or move humanly, and no longer looked human. Although his family
thinking he could not understand them may be part of the reason for his exclusion, but the fact
that he would have still been excluded eventually debunks the idea. It is human nature to reject
something different from them. For example, Mrs. Samsa, Gregor s mother and had even begged
in paragraph 62, Let me go to Gregor...Don t you understand I have to go to him? . However, when
she finally did see him, she fainted. Even though she had wanted to see him and most likely

The Effect of Substrate Concentration, Enzyme...
Title: The Effect of Substrate Concentration, Enzyme Concentration, pH and Temperature on
Enzyme Activity
Abstract: In the following experiments we will measure precise amounts of potato extract as well
as Phenylthiourea, combined with or without deionized water and in some instances change the
temperature and observe and record the reaction. We will also investigate the different levels of
prepared pH on varying samples of the potato extract and the Phenylthiourea and record the results.
We will answer question such as what is the best temperature for optimum temperature reaction as
well as the best pH level for the same reaction.

After measuring equal amounts of distilled water and either adding or subtracting catechol which
we referred to as the substrate some reactions was seen immediately. After which we were able to
get data that supported my original hypothesis that in the addition of substrate and an enzyme the
reaction would be present in varying degrees dependent on whether a temperature change was
provided or not. In the second part of the experiment we were testing the inhibition action of
Catechol Oxidase at different levels in several tubes of varying samples of potato extract,
phenylthiourea (PTU) and distilled water. The experiment showed that (PTU) bonded with the
extract and the water causing a reaction whereas there was no reaction in tube # 1 where there
was an equal amount of everything in the tube. And test tube # 3 was the control tube where the
(PTU) was eliminated as to observe if there was any reaction at all. Of course with the whole
experiment we had to be very careful as to add the catechol last to ensure no premature reaction. It
was hypothesized that (PTU) is a non competitive inhibitor and doubling the substrate will have no
reversal effect. In the exercise # 2 we observed the effect of substrate concentration, enzyme
concentration, pH and temperature on enzyme activity. All the data showed that once potato extract
was added to catechol and water the reaction varied dependent on the level of catechol. As in

The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris Essay
The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris
The novel The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris is said to fall under the genre of
psychological horror. The stories that fall under the genre of horror include a few essential
elements: a villain or one seen as evil to create an initial story line. The foil is the next element; a
foil is a person who tries to stop the villain from going through with the evil plan or plot. These two
elements naturally lead to conflict between the two persons or groups and then from this conflict
suspense, the last element is added. Suspense is important to keep the reader interested and to keep
the story line going. When psychology is added to a story, the definition of horror is changed
completely. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jame Gumb is a very disturbed individual and his violence and crimes are often attempts to
escape from insanity. ; (Menninger, 181) Jame Gumb is in a word where he believes that he can
become a woman and live somehow be with his mother again or even attempt to become her.
Men who are violently afraid of their repressed but nearly emergent homosexual desired often try
to overcome these fears with violent demonstrations. ; (Menninger, 183) Jame Gumb did not
know what he was in terms of sexuality and decided that he would rather be a woman than a
man. This desire drove him to commit such horrible crimes and try to become a woman using
their skins. The foils to Jame Gumb are a much stronger force that he is or could ever be, they
are the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the FBI. They want to stop the murders as soon as
possible so that no other lives are lost and the country can get back to normal without living with
the fear of a serial killer on the loose. Along with the FBI, an X psychiatrist named Dr. Hannibal
Lecter and, Clarice Starling they try to stop the murders and regain order to society, this is not an
easy task and there are many obstacles along the way. The first obstacle is that the whereabouts of
Gumb are unknown and his identity has alluded the FBI since the murders first begun. The only
link that they have to the murder is Jame Gumb s X psychiatrist named Dr Hannibal Lecter. Lecter

School Uniforms Should Be Banned
School uniforms Whether you re for them or against them, this hot debate refuses to go away. It s
a great idea for school to have uniform because with uniform student can get the benefit of school.
This can also bring out the positive impact of school dress code. Uniform is required because it
bring out promotion for school safety. But there are others that don t think school you uniformsis
required in public schools. Because of anti individual s of freedom. Adding to that wearing school
uniformbring an Infringement on Students Rights. The first argument for school uniforms is that
wearing school uniforms bring out a positive impact of school dress code. According to what
Woodard write that a high school principal in Johnston County the student s demeanor is better
and there are fewer disruptions because of teasing or students being uncomfortable because of
the apparel that others are wearing This is a great example because some kids may not have as
much clothes as other kids have and when they come to school with the same rip pants or shirt is
most likely to be one of a bully target. Uniform takes away kids wearing the same clothes
everyday but with the dress code nobody can tell you that you wearing the same clothes because it
is mandatory to wear dress code to school. Therefore student doesn t have to worry about getting
bullied on what they wear to school.
Another important claim in favor of this viewpoint is the benefits of school uniforms. This

Viewing Heritage And Identity Of An African American Family
Alice Walker attempts to depict the different ways of viewing heritage and identity of an African
American family. During the first read, the audience sides with the narrator and Maggie against
Dee/Wangero. The reader can see Dee/Wangero antagonist of the story. However, this is not the
only way to interpret Everyday Use . Walker has created a more complex story than just right and
wrong. After further analysis, the reader comes to understand that Wangero view of her cultural
heritage and identity as a black woman in America is different than the view that Maggie and the
narrator have. Wangero values the quilts differently than her family, however that does not mean
she is the enemy in the story. In the initial reading of Everyday Use , the audience sides with the
narrator and Maggie. The narrator sees the faults in both of her daughters. For instance, Wangero
is depicted as intelligent, beautiful, and a bit bull headed (pg1532). Maggie is not very bright and
she is like a timid, broken animal (pg1532). Dee had every advantage where Maggie had none. The
reader immediately feels sorry for Maggie and the narrator. Where as the reader s interpretation of
Wangero only lessens throughout the story. Wangero wants more from life than staying in her
small home town. When the family s first house burned down the narrator thought that her daughter
should, dance around the ashes (1532). When Wangero was young she rejected the quilts, her old
home, and her family. Now, years later,

Essay about Women in the Work Force- 1960s
Women in the Work Force 1960s
The 1960s were a time of social and political identification for American women. Despite the victory
of voting rights, women still experienced discrimination in daily life. With the current millenium
drawing to a close, women today still express concern of unequal treatment. It is important to glance
backwards in history and remember the struggles that our mothers and grandmothers experienced.
Thanks to the women of the past, women of the present are able to participate in politics and
receive equal pay for equal jobs. The struggle continues, but we conquer more discrimination every
year.
It has always been a popular misconception that women are the weaker sex.1 This idea leads to the
opinion that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Still despite the number of women taking a stand in civil rights fights, very few of these women
became famous for their efforts: When thinking about the most famous civil rights activists of the
1960s the number of famous male participants outnumbers the comparatively minute number of
famous female participants .4 Once again women s efforts were forgotten since they were always
seen as less effective and authoritative than the men involved in the movements.
In the 1960s women were being recruited into the labor force in large numbers making
education a necessity. As economic growth continued to rise, there were not enough men to fill
all the job positions. Women were expected to stay in the kitchen but needed in the work force.
The 1960s saw an increase of 19.5% in the labor force.5 The greatest increase in employment was
seen in service jobs such as clerical.6 Women already dominated such jobs, but the increase in the
number of these positions allowed more women to work outside the home: ...the old female
dominated occupations provided the principal vehicle for expanding women s roles in the labor
force .7

Chicano San Diego Book Report
Chicano San Diego Cultural Space and the Struggle for Justice edited by Richard Griswold Del
Castillo
This book illuminates the challenges and obstacles Chicano residents of Southeast San Diego have
endured since the inception of their communities. Through multiple essays, it is pointed out that the
efforts to fight for equal access have an added dimension due to its close proximity to the U.S
Mexican border. This relates to my topics because the struggles of San Diego are not only local, but
national and international because the people that are negatively impacted by these issues such as
environmental are immigrants. I hope to use this book to connect the national debate on
immigration with the struggle for environmental justice because it is unfair that the people who do
the least environmental damage are the ones suffering the most.

A Study On The Mammalian Diving Reflex
Introduction: The mammalian diving reflex represents a primary physiological mechanism to
maximize underwater excursions in air breathing animals. Traditionally, the oxygen conserving
reflex consists of three metabolic and cardiovascular adjustments: (1) notable bradycardia; (2)
selective peripheral vasoconstriction; and (3) increased blood flow to the viscera (Kawakami et
al., 1967). Previous studies have observed such a response in birds and mammals, generalizing the
considerable reduction of heart rate, or diving bradycardia, as indicative of the response (Butler,
1982). The evolutionary success of these diving animals relies partly on the functional significance
of reducing metabolic demands to prologue underwater survival. Although... Show more content on

Moreover, Gooden (1994) describes apnea as an essential element to the diving reflex; it ensures not
only the prevention of water inhalation, but also acts as an energy saving device through
decreasing nerve stimulation to the diaphragm and intercostals. Therefore, heart rate will be
monitored under both experimental conditions and compared to the resting rate and apneic resting
rate. As a profound autonomic phenomenon, further establishment of the diving reflex in humans
will shed light on the preservation of the reflex and its role in the survival during near drowning
experiences. Only by examining the physiological response in humans can we appreciate the
evolutionary significance of this innate neural circuitry.
Methods:
An untrained 22 year old male human subject was chosen. A PT 104 pulse plethysmograph was
wrapped around his dominant (right) index finger. Connected through a IXTA data acquisition unit,
heart rate was monitored on LabScribe. The recordings were measured with ten seconds of leeway
at the beginning and end to allow baseline pulse recovery. Digital marks labeled the time interval of
the described action. First the subject s heart rate was measured during a resting phase for twenty
seconds. He was encouraged to relax and remain inactive in order to confirm an accurate baseline
reading. For the apneic condition, the subject repeated this

A Trip To Dodge City Research Paper
Day 2 Sunday June 5 Sweet Spring, MO, to Dodge City, KS 418 miles
A lot of driving again, through even flatter and boring Kansas farmland occasionally dotted with

historic road that stretches from Ocean City, MD, to West Sacramento, CA.
We had a couple interesting stops. The first was in the Flint Hills of Kansas, so named because
the limestone is just below the surface and the rock is imbedded with pockets of flint, which
were of use to the Indians. This land was no good for farming because of the lack of deep
topsoil, so it was bypassed and thus never plowed or developed and is now the largest remaining
tall grass prairie in the nation. Prairie is a French word for meadow and when the white settlers
moved west, they encountered tall grass prairies from Texas to Canada and from Colorado to
the Mississippi River. The mature grass was about 6 feet tall. In the winter it dried up and fell
over, making a thick dry thatch (which served as a winter home for critters) that usually caught
fire during the spring storms. The fire would rage across the prairie until it came to a river too

Texas Triangle:
The Texas Triangle is one of only eleven megaregions in the United States. Megaregions are urban
areas that are much superior in scale than a metropolitan statistical area (MSA), as defined by the
US Census Bureau. Sometimes areas like this are also called a as megapolitan area. The Texas
Triangle is formed by the three major cities; Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, and San Antonio. These
cities are connected by a three major Interstates 45, 10, and Interstate 35. If you followed those
main routes and drew a line on a map you would see the route to and from those cities forms an
actual triangle. Three of the nation s 10 largest cities are in the Triangle, including Houston, whose
port handles more foreign tonnage any other port in the United States. Currently, the Texas

studies show that it can actually fight Alzheimer s disease (Schardt). According to Schardt, coconut
oil is unusual because it contains a high percentage of medium chain triglycerides or MTCs . This
chemical is what essentially helps to increase the brain function of demented individuals.

Since uranium has so much power it is a very valuable resource that can be traded internationally.
Such as the many trade agreements between Canada and the European Union. Letting free trade

Thanks to great physical barriers the culture of Europe is diverse allowing for many great locations
for tourism to take place. A lot of countries all over the world have their major income come from
tourism; tourism in these countries has helped them become more developed than before. Europe
has lots of tourist attractions , therefore Europe s landscape has aided to its development due to the
income it provides. However war over valuable land can decrease the amount of tourism in that
area. Therefore war can decrease the amount of money a country gains from tourism, which limits
the things it can do to make the country more developed.
While rivers may be great for trading, sometimes countries have little regulations on what
companies can throw into the rivers. Many companies and people have caused some of Europe s
rivers to be polluted. Pollution in rivers is a great problem since it stops the people from being
able to use the asset to bring in money for the country. If a river is polluted the river that comes

Belonging To A New Place
The meaning of belongings is feeling comfortable and happy in a particular group of people,
surroundings, situation or society. Belonging can be related to culture, language, background,
hobbies, religion, occasions, national dress or some particular activity. It is a well known fact
that belonging to a group can make an individual feel not only accepted, but more powerful that
if they were on their own. Let us discuss the belongings in two different situations. In first
situation we will discuss influence of belongings on us at a place familiar to us and then we will
compare it by supposing a visit of some strange place with different culture. When we live in our
own country, we remained supportive by our own culture, people with same language, religion,
back ground, familiar food, sports, dresses, hobbies and even almost same occasions to calibrate.
We live with our friends, neighbors, relatives and share happy and sad moments with them. We

  • 2. Comparing Study Designs for Citation Bias In an explanatory research design, the most likely kind of bias is the citation type. In citation bias, researchers may be reluctant to publish some discouraging findings, especially if they believe that they may tarnish their reputations or personal abilities and affect the effectiveness of their products. For that reason, citation bias makes researchers submit positive results only for publication, while suppressing negative findings. In most cases, the motive of citation bias is to gain popularity or self appraisal (Riegelman, 2005). Positive results, also known as statistically significant findings, may include results that show that a certain intervention is functioning well. Citation bias is likely to be encountered in explanatory research designs because through them, causal hypotheses can be investigated, analyzed, tested, and published. Explanatory research investigates why certain variables are related and it tries to look into the causes of certain phenomena. However, in the process of publication of the findings, some researchers are likely to concentrate on positive results alone and ignore the negative ones (Riegelman, 2005). Citation bias may be common in medical research studies, especially in those that try to find the cure for a significantly important or mysterious pathogen. In this case, only the positive sides of the results are likely to be published. For example, a potential drug against a certain intractable virus, which has been researched on, is ... Mister Pip written by Lloyd Jones is a novel recounted by the protagonist Matilda. Set in 1990 s Bougainville, we see Matilda begin to question her Mother s traditional idea s about life as a civil war rages between the rebels and the Redskins in her homeland. Mr. Wattsor Pop eye is given the role teaching the village children, being the only educated, and consequentially, white man left on the island. He begins reading Great Expectations to the children and Matilda finds herself becoming entranced in white civilisation. She gets immersed in the story of the white boy Pip living in London in the 1800 s, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She continues to try and save her daughter, the power of unconditional love overcoming their even more obviously marked differences. Dolores then tries to impose her faith on Matilda in hope she will begin to value God over Great Expectations to lead her away from the white world. Dolores comes unannounced to Matilda s class and tries to educate the children on the only thing she knows well: the importance of faith she didn t know anything outside what she knew from the bible but as Mr. Watts gets further through the novel Pip becomes yet even more important to Matilda. Dolores never stops in trying to steer Matilda away from the white world. The world she knows barely anything about, the world she thinks is evil. Despite their ever increasing differences Dolores will always continue to protect Matilda from what she believes is bad. We see the power of unconditional love shown again through Matilda and Dolores s contrast when Matilda discovers Great Expectations to have been stolen by her Mother. When Dolores hides Great Expectations much strife is caused. The Red Skins visit Matilda s island, threatening to burn all of their possessions unless they give up Pip who is only a character from a book and cannot be given up. Because the book is not where it is supposed to be Pip cannot be explained. The redskins burn the whole villages possessions because Dolores fails to come forward and admit to what she had done in order to retrieve ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Discrimination Against African American Literature Robert Hinsberger Honors American Studies English Mrs. Ravenscraft April 17, 2017 Discrimination against African Americans in The Invisible Man In the 1950s African Americans were treated unfairly and discriminated against. During the post civil war time tensions were still high, the discrimination and separation between the blacks and whites was still prevalent. Discrimination is portrayed through Jim Crow laws, which affected every African Americantremendously, the narrator s experience at the Battle Royal, and the narrator s transition from the black college to New York and The Brotherhood. Before the fighting the white women were presented as the forbidden fruit. The Battle Royal incident showed the white women being paraded before the black boys as something to look at, to admire, and to desire, but not to touch (Sistrunk Krakue 1). Sistrunk Krakue describes the white women in the novel as royalty, like prized possessions, as if this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these women. These women are presented as dreams because the description includes admiration, desire, but something they can t actually attain. The white women show division of social classes because they looked around with their impersonal eyes (Ellison 19). The eyes give away the fact that the women don t even acknowledge anyone around them, they are just doing what they re order to do by the wealthy white men. Sistrunk Krakue s idea of dreaminess and royalty of the white women places them on an entirely different social platform, one that would be an impossible feat for a black boy. This judgment of the white women further explains the disrespect that blacks receive in society and how they re judged in most every facet of life. Within Invisible Man, judgment of races is a commonplace in society, Ellison exemplifies this point by starting the novel with a presentation of judgment between races. The town s privileged white men invite the narrator to give his prestigious speech at their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The concept of excessive selfishness has been recognized throughout history. In ancient Greece the concept was understood as hubris. It is only more recently that narcissism has been defined in psychological terms. Healthy narcissism forms a constant, realistic self interest and mature goals and principles and an ability to form deep relations to an something. Within psychology, there are two main branches of research into narcissism: clinical and social psychology. These approaches differ in their view of narcissism, with the former treating it as a disorder, thus as discrete, and the latter treating it as a personality trait, thus as a continuum. These two strands of research tend loosely to stand in a divergent relation to one another, although they converge in places. Self regulation in narcissists involves such things as striving to make one s self look and feel positive, special, successful and important. It comes in both intrapsychic, such as blaming a situation rather than self for failure, and interpersonal forms, such as using a relationship to serve one s own self. • 6. Martin Luther And John Calvin Essay The Renaissance was a time where individuals questioned numerous aspects of European culture and society, which have collectively broadened the worldview from medieval to modern. As such, a new wave of theological thinking emerged from the dissent of the late Medieval church, and this is commonly known as the Reformation. Martin Luther is often credited as the Great Man whose Ninety Five Thesis a provocative set of questions targeting the Church set in motion the pivotal process of religious change, known as Protestantism. The radical change from medieval Christianity to modern Christianity is often confined to the ideas of two important men: Martin Luther and John Calvin. It is also important to note the vastness of time that the Renaissance dominated compared to the short period within 1517 to 1559 that these two reformers lived. Yet without them, without the challenging and convincing religious arguments and questions they put forward justification by faith alone, the doctrine of double predestination the religious change as seen in the sixteenth century, as well as even the name of the movement could ve been very different. In the year 1509, the year in which John Calvin was born, Martin Luther had already begun spreading his teachings. By the age of eight, Martin Luther had publicized his Ninety Five Thesis and the German Reformation had already seen the culmination of Luther s teachers and influence. Visuality In African American Essay Junxia Hu Havc 80 Rachel Nelson April 19, 2017 Visuality, defined in a most straight forward way, is the quality or state of being visual or a mental image or picture relates to the process of glimpsing with the eyes. A study concerned with the possible connections between children s behavior and reading banned books focused on the potential influence that such books have on civic behaviors, mental health problems, students grade point averages, and violent and non violent crime. Findings suggest that consumption of banned books promoted civic behavior and had no effect on grade point averages and criminal activity, but increased the internalizing and externalizing mental health symptoms. The potential correlation between increased symptoms of mental health issues and banned book reading existed within a small subset of the subjects and cannot be proven to be substantial. Overall, banned books seem to have little to no negative effect on the majority of children and foster increased civic behaviors (Ferguson). While the motivation behind banning books seems logical and justified, in reality, books have no substantial negative effects on most children. In all actuality, banned books foster increased positive, civic behaviors, likely because they teach children tolerance by exposing them to diverse characters and humanizes groups whose lifestyle choices they may be unfamiliar and innately uncomfortable with. However, what may go unnoticed at times is the agonizing effect that the act of smoking has on non smokers. However, this may become a concern for the sellers, and even though they might support the cause on an ethical level, they will withstand the ban, due to a business perspective. The ban will also have an effect on the customers, as now everyday smokers would have to go through the struggle of finding a designated smoking area to smoke even a single cigarette. This will affect his or her smoking habits in one of the two ways; the first possible outcome could be him or her struggling to find a place to smoke every time, which can decrease the frequency of smoking. This, in fact will affect the amount of money they spend on cigarettes. Which in fact, could also have a positive impact on people with families and children. The second possible outcome could be; that since a person cannot smoke in public places, he or she might go home and smoke all their cigarettes, thus affecting their family and children in a negative way. All things considered, smoking indoors and outdoors affects someone in a negative way, which puts another s life in danger. Cigarette manufacturing companies will most likely be ... In the novel, The Underdog by Markus Zusak, Cameron Wolfe explores adolescence through the events and people in his life during one winter. The question, Should a boy be considered a man because of his age? is a difficult one; one that does not have a straightforward answer and is not clearly answered in the novel. White Australian society deems that a boy is a man at the age of eighteen. In other cultures, manhood is recognised after a boy completes a ritual. Manhood is a lot of things; the least of which has to do with age. When a person is respectful, responsible and aware of the needs of others, we can say that a boy can be considered a man. Cosmetics are seen as one of the most important sources of releasing heavy metals into the environment and the human biological system. Thus Cosmetic products must not be harmful under normal or foreseeable conditions of use. Four different samples of cosmetics (Foundation, Kohl, Blusher, and Lipstick) were analyzed in Al Madina SAES laboratory for water and food analysis to determine the levels of heavy metals (As, Pb, Zn, Hg, and Cu) in the products. Concentrations of the selected heavy metals were determined by using inductively coupled plasma/optical emission spectroscopy (ICP/OES). • 33. The Victorian Er Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender... The Victorian Era: Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender Roles In 1868, British author Wilkie Collins wrote what is now famously known as one of the first full length detective stories, The Moonstone. Within this text, he explores and transcends his writing style, as he created an atmosphere full of suspense and gothic tradition by making use of two genres famous in the Victorian Era (Ayton, 2). As Collins managed to challenge the roles of men and women within The Moonstone, he ultimately attempts to reverse genders by creating a story of conflict, where the women are essentially in charge. As many genderstereotypes are expressed within The Moonstone through the different narrators of the novel, almost all of them become discredited as we are introduced to the other characters. By making use of the characters like Betteredge, Lady Verinder, and finally Rachel Verinder, Collins novel proves to break society s barrier of expected roles for men and women within the Victorian Era. During the Victorian period, men and women s roles became more sharply defined than at any time in history. This concept of roles, became extremely significant within Wilkie Collins The Moonstone (1868), as he incorporated the issues seen during that era, with the roles and expectations of the women in his novel. Because many of the women seen throughout Collins novel are more assertive than one would expect from a Victorian novelist, Collins shows women acting forcefully on their own, which ... This choice enrages Iago and therefore he vows to get revenge on Cassio. Iago then asks Roderigo to tell Desdemonas father, Brabantio, that his daughter is marrying Othello. He knows that Brabantio will be angered by this because he is a racist man and does not like Moorish people. After they confront each other, Othello and Brabantio take their issue to the Duke of Venice, who summons them to ask Othello to sail to Cyprus and stop a Turkish invasion. Reptiles have repeatedly invaded marine environments with varying success and marine adaptation has been undertaken more than once in the history of the Cheloniidae family. Marine reptiles were particularly successful in the Mesozoic as major predators in the sea. Mesozoic marine reptiles explored a variety of swimming styles and diets that included fish, cephalopods, other vertebrates, and hard shelled invertebrates (Motani 2009). One lineage was the predecessor of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), the only member of the family Dermochelyidae, and the other lineage gave rise to the six species of the family Cheloniidae, one of which is the loggerhead sea turtle (Bowen 2003). Today, only seven or eight species of marine turtles survive, distributed unevenly through all three tropical oceans. The modern decline in sea turtles species is not due to inherently poor adaption to post Pleistocene conditions, but is mainly a result of current and past anthropogenic exploitation. Additionally, the greater diversity of sea turtle taxa in the past compared to today is also due to the disappearance of entire isolated oceans such as the Nirobrara Sea, which was once inhabited by a diversity of seat turtle species. It is also due to other evolutionary mechanisms. Early sea turtle lineages had a growth of experimental type species that were more specialized, and these eventually became narrowed down to modern species as overspecialized species had a poor response to changing ... Our society has garnered a generalized model of how people of a certain race, ethnicity, or gender behave, and they are often based on prejudices and erroneous patterns that describe a small niche within the targeted group of people. Stereotypes alienate people from either their raceor gender and instigate misidentification. One major generalization under the umbrella of ethnic stereotypes is that all people of Hispanic descent were domesticated from birth to tolerant spicy foods. Although, foods engulfed in paprika and hot chili peppers are mostly found in Central American cultures, more specifically in Mexico. When my family moved to the United States, we were exposed to the amalgam of cultures that compile Rockville. Diversity was scarce in Venezuela, and this ethnic diversity introduced us to cultures outside of our limited scope. Within the first few months, my parents were introduced to a family who I distinctly remember kept close ties to their Mexican culture. I was amazed at the high tolerance the kids my age or younger had for chili peppers. A couple of them sat cross legged on the floor sucking on their chili lollipops, while others palmed the bottoms of Tabasco bottles onto their scrambled eggs. All Hispanic people must love spicy foods is a stereotype that misidentifies people of Latin American descent. This fallacy is under the erroneous assumption that all Spanish speaking cultures enjoy the unforgiving, tongue biting, and stomach eating spices that are the backbone to the Mexican cuisine. At this point, my personal model pulls ideas from cognitive behavioral therapy and reality therapy. Though my model is still evolving, I feel as though the basis of my thoughts and beliefs are sound. The goal of cognitive behavioral therapyis to have a structured, short term, present oriented psychotherapyfor depression, directed toward solving current problems and modifying dysfunctional thinking and behavior (Beck, 1995, p. 1). It has been shown successful in not only treating depression, but also a wide range of psychiatric disorders in various client populations. Cognitive behavioral therapy is based on the cognitive model, which assumes that dysfunctional thinking is common to psychological disturbances. Realistic modifications of thinking can result in an overall improvement of mood and behaviors. These improvements ultimately come from the modification of the patient s fundamental dysfunctional beliefs (Beck, 1995). Beck (1995) writes how cognitive therapy is based on the cognitive model. This is how an individual s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors play into their interpretation of events. The way people emotionally react and respond to a situation is based on how they interpret a situation rather than the situation itself. The initial reaction thoughts are called automatic thoughts. However, there are other people who have been completely left out, people who don t fit into a particular group or ideal and are left out because they are different. Some may argue that they are excluded because they are misunderstood, but that is not the case. The short story The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka, the video Franz Kafka and Metamorphosis by BBC, and personal experience prove that people are excluded because they are different from what is considered normal, and not due to a misunderstanding or being misjudged. In the short story The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka, the main character, Gregor, is turned into a beetle and is excluded by his family. The reason for his exclusion was because he was different. He could no longer speak or move humanly, and no longer looked human. Although his family thinking he could not understand them may be part of the reason for his exclusion, but the fact that he would have still been excluded eventually debunks the idea. It is human nature to reject something different from them. For example, Mrs. Samsa, Gregor s mother and had even begged in paragraph 62, Let me go to Gregor...Don t you understand I have to go to him? . However, when she finally did see him, she fainted. After measuring equal amounts of distilled water and either adding or subtracting catechol which we referred to as the substrate some reactions was seen immediately. After which we were able to get data that supported my original hypothesis that in the addition of substrate and an enzyme the reaction would be present in varying degrees dependent on whether a temperature change was provided or not. In the second part of the experiment we were testing the inhibition action of Catechol Oxidase at different levels in several tubes of varying samples of potato extract, phenylthiourea (PTU) and distilled water. The experiment showed that (PTU) bonded with the extract and the water causing a reaction whereas there was no reaction in tube # 1 where there was an equal amount of everything in the tube. And test tube # 3 was the control tube where the (PTU) was eliminated as to observe if there was any reaction at all. Of course with the whole experiment we had to be very careful as to add the catechol last to ensure no premature reaction. It was hypothesized that (PTU) is a non competitive inhibitor and doubling the substrate will have no reversal effect. In the exercise # 2 we observed the effect of substrate concentration, enzyme concentration, pH and temperature on enzyme activity. The foil is the next element; a foil is a person who tries to stop the villain from going through with the evil plan or plot. Traditionally, the oxygen conserving reflex consists of three metabolic and cardiovascular adjustments: (1) notable bradycardia; (2) selective peripheral vasoconstriction; and (3) increased blood flow to the viscera (Kawakami et al., 1967). Previous studies have observed such a response in birds and mammals, generalizing the considerable reduction of heart rate, or diving bradycardia, as indicative of the response (Butler, 1982). The evolutionary success of these diving animals relies partly on the functional significance of reducing metabolic demands to prologue underwater survival. Although...
