Today’s radio frequency environment (RF) consists of many sophisticated signals
and a lot of ordinary signals that create “noise” or interference on the test signal.
Test signals must be a true replication of the desired waveform and they must be
easily reproduced. Some complex communications system employ multiple
inputs requiring several signal sources with a common reference to accurately
model the signal of interest. The first stage of development usually requires a
“pure” signal and later stages introduce interference and signal to noise
degradations. Development and testing of RF systems usually require an RF
source that replicates the RF signal input of the device being tested. This usually
involves a number of signal generators, combiners, outboard modulators, etc.
This can become expensive and time consuming. It may even require a
breadboard design to model the signal sources.
Wouldn’t it be better to easily switch between signals without changing a host of
equipment and eliminate a lot of set up time? It is possible using the QRC
Technologies Wide Band Transcorder (WBT). This two channel digital recorder
and transmitter allows an exact digital replica of either “off‐the‐air” or any other
RF signal that can be recorded and retransmitted. Both channels are referenced
to the same source and additional units may be cascaded using this reference
source. The output frequency can be varied and even the output level is
selectable. Two 25 MHz channels allow interfering signals to be introduced or
simulate multi‐channel environments. Both channels can be joined to give a 50
MHz record and playback capability. Of course, external amplifiers can boost the
signals to any level you need.

Drives can be easily swapped even while the other drive is in use to provide the
ability to introduce new waveforms without interrupting current testing. A RAID
interface allows for large storage capability and unique recorded environments.
Selectable recording bandwidths allow the flexibility to conserve disk space. The
removable drives allow a library of signals to exist easily and affordably. This is all
available in a compact and very portable package. Additionally, extra capacity has
been set aside to develop applications internal to the unit.
Regardless if it is testing, training or system analysis this system is hard to beat. It
is a cost effective solution to a potentially very expensive problem. The cost of
several signal sources, modulation hardware and mixers, etc. can add up quickly.
Additionally, system output(s) can be digitally documented as changes are made.
Different implementations of the same signal can be documented and replayed
for analysis and training. The same signal can be placed at different frequencies
anywhere in the system’s tunable range and retransmitted. The flexibility and
ease of use of the QRC approach is hard to beat. The specifications are following.
