Kate Chopin and T. Coraghessan Boyle made excellent use of the elements point of view, character,
and setting in their short stories The Storm and Greasy Lake . Kate Chopin s characters and events
follow the setting the storm. This greatly enhances her work. Boyle s characters mirror his setting
as well a greasy lake. It is amazing how much greater depth and deeper the insight is for a story
when the potentials of elements of writing are fulfilled and utilized.

The main character of Boyle s story is the nameless narrator. He is more round than flat, mainly
because of the point of view of first person. The reader must of course get closer to the main
character because they become them when they read the story. The reader sees inside the narrator
and through his eyes out at the world around him because of his thoughts and actions. Boyle
develops his main character through the point of view taken they cannot be separated.

Interview with Film Composer Chris Hajian of The Infiltrator
Pablo Escobar has been a popular topic lately. From Narcos on Netflix to Andrea s Di Stefano s
underrated Escobar Paradise Lost, cocaine and greed can t get anymore bombastic in the
entertainment zeitgeist. Yet with director Brad Furman s (The Lincoln Lawyer), The Infiltrator, the
infamous Columbian drug load plays only second to agent Robert Mazur (played wonderfully by
Bryan Cranston), the man who brings down the world s largest cartel. It s a refreshing angle on the
subject matter with stellar performances (most notably John Leguizamo s radically different and
award worthy role) to match. Yet, one of the biggest highlights of the filmis that of film composer
Chris Hajian s (First Position, Yonkers Joe, The Take) score. Hajian manages to keep the film s
music subtle, but with gravitas to capture the heaviness of the situation at bay. It plays to the trend
of synth percussion, a popular sensation seen everywhere from Cliff Martinez s score in Drive to
Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of Stranger Things. Sure it plays to the trend, but doesn t get lost in
it. Hijian has the ear to work with modern sound, but keeps disciplined by incorporating

I took the Big Five questionnaire and the LIFE survey. Both of these surveys collect self
reported data (S data). Self reported data is very beneficial to researchers in that it allows them to
gain knowledge only known by the individual. Questionnaires and surveys which provide S data
are limited by the answers provided. It is easy to lie or skirt the truth when self reporting data. In
my opinion, the Big Five questionnaire was a more accurate assessment of my personality than was
the assessment from the LIFE survey. The Big Five questionnaire measures personality factors in
five dimensions; openness, contentiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The

The LIFE survey was very similar to the Big Five in that it measures personality in multiple
dimensions and then gives a numerical score for each dimension. The dimensions on the LIFE
survey are suburbanite, cultured, slacker, and preppie. In the suburbanite dimension, I scored 8
out of 13. According to the survey, people who score higher in the suburbanite dimension live a
more conventional life style and tend to be more family oriented and conservative than those
who score lower. I agree with this score. I tend to be more of a homebody and I enjoy cooking,
which is a sign of a suburbanite. I scored 2 out of 13 in the cultured dimension which I disagree
with. The interpretation of my low cultured score contradicts the interpretation of my low
slacker score. Cultured people try to better the world around them by attending museums,
volunteering, and writing letters. People who score low in this dimension as I did, are assumed
to be the kind of people who eat too much junk food and watch too much TV. The discrepancy
probably arose due to my introversion tendencies, as cultured people are purportedly expressive
and vocal. I scored low, 3 out of 13, in the slacker dimension. I apparently relate better to other
humans than I do to computers, and I know that smoking and drinking in excess are bad for my
health. People who score high in the slacker dimension live unhealthy lifestyles, characterized by
their excessive use of TV, fast food, smoking, and drinking habits. I agree with my slacker score,
but this assessment of my personality in the slacker dimension directly contradicts the assessment
in the cultured dimension. I supposedly eat too much fast food and indulge in too much TV
according to my cultured score, but according to my slackers score I live a healthy life style
characterized by my infrequent indulgence in fast food, TV, smoking, and alcohol. The

Many technological advancements have been made since the discovery of DNA structure and
its function in 1953 by James Watson and Francis Crick. Recently, scientists have developed a
process called DNA barcoding. The result of DNA barcoding is a database of barcodes of species,
made up of a sequence of nucleotides in specific genes. DNAbarcoding is a relatively new process
that isolates a section of a mitochondrial gene and amplifies it, allowing scientists to sequence the
order of nucleotide bases in a certain gene, the organism s barcode. The mitochondrial
cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene (CO1) is used for animals. It codes for a protein that is a part of the
electron transport chain, which is used by every speciesduring oxidative phosphorylation in
cellular respiration. Every organism has a unique CO1 gene, but organisms that are within the
same families will have more similar genes. Thus, by looking at a sequence of nucleotides in the
CO1 gene, scientists can identify and categorize species. Each DNA barcode is registered in the
