Nationalism Position Paper
It can be seen that the source that was given supports nationalism to a certain degree. They explain all
of the positive things about embracing nationalism while giving only one small negative point. The
positive points clearly prevail over the negative point which helps show the reader the author s
position on this issue. It can be seen that only self determined countries are legitimate. The
government that runs the nation state, achieves this self determination by gaining and keeping the
support of its citizens. This results in the citizens coming together as a civic nation and having great
pride in their country. If this self determined country is created from ultra nationalistic beliefs it will
lead into a country that believes that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the coup d état, a military General was able to get in control of the country. With his
motivational speeches and his recognition from the battles he has won, he was able to gain the trust of
the citizens and the army. From seeing what the Germans were doing the General decided to do the
same and expand Japan. This led to the invasion of China and the start of the Pacific War. It can be
noted that nationalism is not necessarily good; it can lead to major wars and the deaths of many
innocent citizens, furthermore; it can also lead to a total annihilation of a race. It can also be seen
throughout history that genocides were also caused by ultra nationalism. In 1994 a terrible incident
has occurred and that would be the Rwanda genocide. The two groups that were involved in this are
the Tutsi and Hutu group. The Tutsi and Hutu had animosity between them and deeply desired to kill
each other. Their ultra nationalistic views helped accumulate their anger towards each other. This led
to the Hutu s planned assassination on their president. They were able to use this as an excuse in order
to destroy the Tutsis. The Hutus blamed the Tutsis for killing their president and went on a rampage
which conducted the mass killing of the Tutsis. Also another genocide that was created because of
ultra nationalistic views is the Armenian genocide. After the

Euphemism In Communication
My intent of this essay is to describe the six major barriers that impact of influence effective business
communications. Actually, those barriers are more likely to be known as cliché, jargon, slang, sexist
and racist language, euphemisms and doublespeak, which may alter the interpretation of messages as
well as subject of relevance, and therefore create sometime a lack of attention and unneeded
contradiction among commutators.
What is Cliché? According to Random House Dictionary, Cliché is: a trite,
stereotyped expression; a sentence or phrase, usually expressing a popular or common
thought or idea, that has lost originality, ingenuity, and impact by long overuse, as
adder but wiser, or strong as an ox. . it can be considered as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is a term or terminology
used in specialized language and it understood by people who are part of that
specialization. According to the Dictionary.com, jargon is The language, especially the
vocabulary, peculiar to a particular trade, profession, or group. Unintelligible or
meaningless talk or writing. Any talk or writing that one does not understand. For
example, students in computer science always use words in abbreviation. One of the
words that they always use in IT . I usually use it and as a result, No one understands
what I am trying to say unless you are a student majoring in computer science or knew
it before.
To conclude, when we use any of those aforementioned barriers in communication and especially in
business we can lots of things such as : damaged relationships, conflicts, unclear requirements and or
missed opportunities. These results are counter productive and create inefficiencies to business
operations. As such, they do not have a place or use in business communications.

Examples Of Meekness And Forgiveness
I acknowledge His power I acknowledge His grace I acknowledge His love I acknowledge His mercy
I acknowledge Him Meekness and Forgiveness Meekness and Forgiveness Two of the most crucial
lessons on my spiritual journey have been ones on meekness and forgiveness. Hard lessons from a
hard teacher. I have not gotten my diploma yet, but I am still on the Potter s wheel. I am still being
shaped and molded into that beautiful vessel he has created me to be. I have written extensively about
my own personal experiences on both subjects, but here I share what for me are the salient points
Meekness The subject popped up on my curriculum during a time when I worked in an environment
where I was privy and witness to so much wrong doing and could not do or say anything about it.

A Good Plan Violently Executed Now Is Better Than A...
A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week. What is it about
this quote from General George S. Patton that some leaders are able to grasp and others cannot?
Throughout military history, untold number of plans have been developed and executed with both
success and failure. It is not the plan that moves entire Army s across a land mass or storms a country
s beach head, but the plan that is developed during a split second between rounds cracking over your
head that defines the battle at hand.
In today s Army, we as leaders have become inundated with having to know every little piece of

The Cicones In The Odyssey
Cicones were a Homeric Thracian tribe, whose stronghold in the time of the Odyssey was the town of
Ismara, located at the foot of mount Ismara on the south coast of Thrace, in modern Greece. After they
raided the Cicones they made there way over to the Land of the Lotus Eaters. The Lotus is a plant
which affects your brain when consumed to make you want to stay on the island and eat it for the rest
of your life. Some of Odysseus s men were taken over by the lotus plant, but overcame it when the
other crew members made them stop. One of the biggest problems Odysseus s crew had to overcome
was being turned into swine by Circe.
Circe drugged a number of Odysseus s men, which turned them into swine. When Odysseus goes to
rescue them, Hermes confronts him in the form of a young man. He tells Odysseus to eat a herb called
moly to protect himself from Circe s drug. Odysseus did what the young man, Hermès, told him to do
and lunged at Circe when she tried to hit him with her sword. After escaping Circe, Odysseus and his
men took back to his ships and sailed off. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Anthropometric Factors: Are fast bowlers born or made?

things, those little training drills helped me to maintain my speed and to bowl the quickest I have ever

Decades have passed and the debate continues. This discussion is not limited to fast bowling but
applies to general skill acquisition as a whole.
Most of the research related to fast bowling has focused on biomechanics and back injury prevention
and very limited work has been done with factors contributing to bowling speeds. This limited amount
mainly consists of theoretical papers, which provide a synthesis of arguments from different papers
rather than using a dataset to deduce empirical evidence. The difficultly associated with conducting
experiments with a small sample size (limited number of bowlers) and a small number of observations
(few deliveries per bowler) may be the reason for the lack of research in this area.
A fast bowler s training involves a lot more strength and conditioning than a batsman or any other type
of bowler. This highlights the fact that anthropometric factors are of great significance to generating
high bowling speeds. This research will attempt to identify the most important anthropometric factors
and how well those possibly explain the difference(s) in bowling speeds. To date, little or no attempt
has been made to classify anthropometric factors vis à vis fast bowlers as either genetic or
environmental. Furthermore, research has drawn a line between genetic and environmental factors and
has not considered the two as interdependent.

The Importance Of Organ Donation
Over the past several years, the argument of whether or not compensating donors is ethical and
financially benefitting for everyone has been heavily debated. The interest for life saving organ
donation has such little supply that the doctors of waiting patients are so desperate that they believe
compensation is their only option. Enhanced survival rates combined with unfaltering development of
signs for transplantation make the organ deficiency progressively severe; waiting times are now
deplorably long. In order to cut the waiting period, compensating donors will promote more
individuals to become donors. Although there are many people who disagree with the idea to
compensate donors, people who donate their kidneys should be compensated because more
individuals will be drawn to donate their kidneys in return for monetary value. Additionally, donors
should be compensated because they are giving an organ from their body part away.
Individuals and their families pay for dialysis each year hoping they will be chosen to receive the next
available organ they have been longing for. These individuals often do not think about how they could
be paying a donor for a much lower price instead of dialysis which does not guarantee the organ you
desire. The interest for organ donation has reliably surpassed supply, and the large gap between the
quantity of recipients on the waiting list and the quantity of donors has increased. If a larger supply of
organs was available to the large

I Appreciate Barbour s Praiseworthy And Toilsome Effort
III. Critique First of all, I appreciate Barbour s praiseworthy and toilsome effort to put theology and
science in a meaningful and fruitful dialogue, by seriously taking account of both continuities and
discontinuities between scientific metaphors and religious metaphors. For Barbour, because both
disciplines have continuities and discontinuities they can contribute to our more comprehensive
understanding of the reality of our experiences in the world through their metaphorical relationship.
While scientific models, theories, and paradigms are focused on the explanation of natural
phenomena, the religious counterparts are more focused on the human experience of their
natural/social environments and evoking moral and attitudinal responses, while religious affirmations
do not exclude truth claims like the scientific claims do. Also, like religion, scientists also hold on to
their traditions in their observation and interpretation of natural phenomena; hence, they are not
neutral. In that sense, I agree with Barbour that science and religion bear significant similitude, while
they can complement each other in our holistic understanding of our world. It seems to me that this is
well supported by Peacocke s concept of ontological monism. In our evolutionary understanding of
the world, we could contend with Peacocke that All concrete particulars in the world including human
beings with all of their properties are constituted only of fundamental physical

Essay on Odysseus as Pawn of the Gods in Homer s Odyssey
Odysseus as Pawn of the Gods in The Odyssey
Throughout literature characters have relied upon entities greater then themselves to furnish them with
aid as they meet the many challenges they must face. The Odyssey is a tale of Odysseus epic journey
and the many obstacles that bar his return home. But Odysseus is not alone in this struggle and
receives aid from many gods, especially the clear eyed goddess Athena. There are times when
Odysseus beseeches the gods for aid, but other times he is too foolhardy to receive aid from even the
immortal gods. In Homer s The Odyssey, Odysseus journey revolves around the cyclical phases of his
dependence, independence and his return to reliance upon the gods aid.
While with Calypso ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The clear eyed goddess Athena herself tells Telemachus that ...not unbefriended of the gods have you
been born and bred (19). Her reference highlights Telemachus greatest inheritance, which is the aid of
the immortal gods. Even Nestor, a mortal, notes the aid which Telemachus receives from the gods, and
marvels that Telemachus must be truly favored ...if when so young the gods become [his] guides (26).
Such qualities in Telemachus constantly remind the reader of the dependence on the gods aid
Odysseus has developed in his travels.
Though Odysseus is as great a man as ever lived, he is still only mortal and at the gods mercy.
Odysseus does not control his own destiny, but instead the gods determine what shall befall him and
whether he shall ever reach his home. Odysseus is only a man and hard is a god for mortal man to
master (36) even if he is great amongst his brethren. Odysseus can not control the gods anymore then
he can control his fate and so he is left at their mercy. Even Zeus, who gives Odysseus many signs,
will sometimes deal Odysseus woe which he is powerless to stop. To avenge the Sun god upon
Odysseus evil crew, ...Zeus with a gleaming bolt smote [Odysseus ] swift ship and wrecked it in the
middle of the wine dark sea (47). Such acts illustrate the control that the gods exercise over Odysseus
and his inability to deliver himself from woe.
As Odysseus begins his journey

The Value Of Skate Culture

conversation, he mentioned that in skate culture to injuries was a type badge of honor. That s within
the skate culture, and the value of a bump or bruise as a badge of honor in skate culture doesn t really
apply to many other professions or sub cultures. Though, it seems that within various groups, there is
always something that carries a value within that group that makes members of that group feel
honored because of an inflated value from other members in that group. That thing, that title or badge,

Homosexuality in William Shakespeare s The Merchant of Venice
With every great story line comes a theme. William Shakespeare created an art of intertwining often
unrecognizable themes within his plays. In Shakespeare s play, The Merchant of Venice, one hidden
theme is the idea of homosexuality. This theme might not have even been noticed until modern
Shakespeare fans discovered them. According to Alan Bray s book, Homosexuality in Renaissance
England, the modern image of the homosexual cannot be applied to the early modern period, when
homosexual behavior was viewed in terms of the sexual act and not an individual s broader identity.

This is where the link of Antonio s homosexual feelings towards Bassanio can be seen. In the end,
Antonio is unable to pay Shylock back on his loan. Antonio, on the verge of having a pound of flesh
taken, directs a speech toward Bassanio regarding his love for him. A closer look at this particular
speech, which occurs in Act IV Scene I, can help the reader to better understand Shakespeare s
intricate wording that portrays homosexuality in Antonio.
The word love is used numerous times in this seventeen line speech given by Antonio. According to
the Oxford English Dictionary, the word love , as a verb, was used by Shakespeare in his plays
meaning to entertain a strong affection for; spec. to have a passionate attachment to a person of the
opposite sex; to be in love (OED). During this speech, Antonio preaches to Bassanio, Say how I lov d
you, speak me fair in death (4.1.271). Taking this statement and placing it against the definition
provided, the reader can see that Antonio holds more than just a friendly love towards Bassanio.
Before he is about to die, Antonio professes his love to Bassanio. One would think that Antonio would
feel angry that he was unable to fulfill a contract that he didn t benefit from. Instead, he chooses his
last words as loving ones toward another man.
Another instance in which Antonio uses the word love is in noun form. According to the OED, love ,

Eye In The Sky
Mississippi Burning ⇽Introduction⇾
The main connection I am going to look into in further detail is Innocence.
The meaning of Innocence from my opinion is To not be found guilty of a cause or problem eg:
Invulnerable.
I will be using four pieces of texts to help me back this up.
The first text is Hurricane directed by Norman Jewison, Hurricane is about a man named Rubin Carter
who s dream is winning the middle weight boxing title but all came to a crash when some unsuspected
murders happend.
The second text is Eye In The Sky directed by Gavin Hood, Eye in The Sky is about the British army
preparing to take out a group of Suicidal Bombers in Nairobi Kenya.
The final text is Mississippi Burning directed by Alan Parker, Mississippi Burning is about a mystery
killing of 3 civil right workers supporting the African American Race.
Body Paragraph 1~
Culpability
The first connection I will be explaining is Culpability.
From my opinion Culpability means to be blamed for something they didn t do despite them pleading
innocent from a Law s point of view.
The movie that relates strongly to this is Hurricane, Rubin Hurricane Carter was a Boxing champion
but all went downhill when he was accused of murdering three people at a bar in New Jersey.
An example of how culpability was used was when in the

What Role Did Civil Wars Play On The Deterioration And...
The investigation and the goal of this research project is to answer the question; what role did civil
wars play in the deterioration and eventual death of the Roman Republic? It is relevant because it
shows the transition of government. The issues that are going to be addressed highlight the political
unrest in the Roman Republic and the corruption of different leaders that were one in many reasons
why the Republic became an Empire. This research will focus on the time period of 100 to 25 BC and
the places investigated will include Rome and the areas they conquered. This will be studied and

time period mentioned in The Roman Republic by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The limitations, this book was published in 1966. New studies have found more research on these
early time periods which affects the accuracy and validity of this current generation while reading and
extracting information from the book. Other limitations included vague amounts of research on certain
battles that Julius Caesar led, in surrounding areas of the Republic. This lack of information makes it
difficult for the reader to gain good understanding of Julius Caesar s whereabouts before his conflict
with political leaders in Rome.
The second secondary source, reveals the personal life, conquests, fails, and facts of Julius Caesar, the
eventual dictator of the Roman Republic. The origin of this text is San Diego, California, by Don
Nardo in 1999. The purpose of this text is to educate the reader and the audience about Julius Caesar,
the ruthless and cunning leader that shaped the Roman Republic forever. The value of the source is
that reveals many unknown pieces of information about Julius Caesar and really highlights his
influence on the transition of government. Without Julius Caesar, there may have never been such
internal conflict in the republic. The Senate wouldn t have fled to the rest of Italy, politicians like
Pompey never would have been defeated, and there would have been time before a leader declared
themselves as a dictator. The book is very useful because it presents unbiased and clear information

Different Types Of Protocol Identifiers
A protocol identifier is nothing but the name of the protocol to be used to fetch the resource, e.g.
https://www.youtube.com/.The example uses the HyperText Transfer Protocol over SSL (Secure
Socket Layer) (HTTPs), which is TCP/IP protocol used by Web servers to transfer and display Web
content securely. The data transferred is encrypted so that it cannot be read by anyone except the
recipient. (HTTPs) is just one of many different protocols used to access different types of resources
on the net. Several other prefixes exist as listed below:
1. HTTP a webpage, website directory, or another file available over HTTP
2. FTP a file or directory of files available to download from an FTP server
3. NEWS a discussion located within a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The difference is that a URI can be used to describe a file s name or location, or both, while a URL
specifically defines a resource s location.
URL PARAMETERS
The first part of the URL is called a Protocol Identifier and it indicates what protocol to use, and the
second part is called a Resource Name and it specifies the IP Address or the domain name where the
resource is located. The protocol identifier and the resource name are separated by a colon and two
forward slashes. Each time the client taps on the connection URL finds the archive to be recovered.
URL Parameters are parameters whose values are set dynamically in a page s URL, and can be
accessed by its template and its data sources. This makes pages incredibly dynamic, enabling a single
page to power an endless number of views. This very page, for example, sets a parameter in the last bit
of its URL (url parameters), which is then used to filter a data source that fetches the appropriate entry
from the Concepts section. Every individual Concept view on this site is thus powered by a single
page. You can insert URL parameters into your URLs so that your URLs track information about a
click. URL parameters are made of a key and a value separated by an equals sign (=) and joined by an
ampersand ( ). The first parameter always comes after a question mark in a URL. For example,
http://example.com?product=1234 utm_source=google A URL has two fundamental segments as

What Does Kuhn Mean By Paradigm
1. What does Kuhn mean by the term normal science? What does he mean by paradigm? How are the
two concepts related to each other? A thorough understanding of what Kuhn is communicating when
he uses the terms normal science and paradigm is a vital component for individuals that read The
Structure of Scientific Revolutions. By understanding what Kuhn means when he uses these two
terms, one should be enabled to, perhaps, more accurately fully extract and understand the argument
that Kuhn is making within this book. According to the book, the term normal science is used to mean,

particular scientific community acknowledges for a time as supplying the ... Show more content on

Kuhn argues that paradigms contribute to a sense of order within communities because the community
s research is based off of a prearranged set of accepted beliefs. Paradigmatic boundaries contribute to
a sense of clarity that results from fact gathering activities within scientific communities. In contrast,
the collection of mere facts , which do not stem from paradigmatic boundaries of explanation, results
in nothing but puzzlement (Kuhn, 2012, p. 35). As a result, Kuhn argues that paradigms are vital for
establishing validity in regard to the questions and findings that are related to fact gathering activities.
In contrast, the absence of a paradigm would pose a major disadvantage for a hypothetical scientific
community that does not use a paradigm based approach for fact gathering activities. Kuhn believes
nothing but confusion could be derived from a collection of facts that belong to endeavors that are not
rooted in a scientific community s paradigm. In class, a paradigm was metaphorically compared to the
glue that binds a scientific community together. This metaphorical comparison was used in an effort to
illustrate the intimate relationship between paradigms and normal science that Kuhn describes in this
book. After reading Kuhn s book, and becoming well acquainted with his usage of paradigm in the
context of his book, I could not agree more with the argument that he is making throughout this book.
Therefore, it is obvious that paradigms mold fact gathering activities related to normal science, that
there are advantages to fact gathering activities stemming from paradigms, and that absence of a
paradigm would possibly plague a scientific community when scientists would try to approach fact
gathering

Foreign Aid Essay
EFFECT OF FOREIGN AID IN KENYA
1. Introduction
Foreign aid is usually associated with official development assistance, which in turn is a subset of the
official development finance, and normally targeted to the poorest countries (World Bank, 1998).
Foreign aid represents an important source of finance in most countries in sub Saharan Africa (SSA),
where it supplements low savings, narrow export earnings and thin tax bases. In recent years the donor
community has become more stringent about fiscal discipline and good policies, which has led to
freezing of donor funds to governments that do not conform with aid conditionalities. The Kenyan
government has experienced such aid cuts in the past.
1.1 Definition
The standard definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A well designed aid plan can support effective institutions and governance by providing more
knowledge and transferring technology and skills. It is recommended to decentralize the aid flows in
recipient countries. Money aid is important but idea aid is even more important. Aid can be the
midwife of good policy in recipient countries. In poor policy countries, idea aid is especially more
essential than money aid. This implies that in a good policy environment, aid increases growth via the
investment channel whereas in a poor policy environment, it nurtures the reforms through
policymakers training or knowledge and technology transfer. These non money effects are believed
even more important and viable than the money value of aid. Aid works much better where the reform
is initiated or internalized by local government rather than when it is imposed by outsiders. Therefore,
aid is normally more effective when it facilitates efficiently and timely reforms triggered by the local
authority (World Bank, 1998).
Foreign aid or (development assistance) is often regarded as being too much, or wasted on corrupt
recipient governments despite any good intentions from donor countries. In reality, both the quantity
and quality of aid have been poor and donor nations have not been held to account. In 1970, the world
s rich countries agreed to give 0.7% of their gross national income as official international
development aid, annually. Since

Jobs That Stress Never Ends
Jobs That Stress Never Ends
The world population is excessively on the rise making people hard to find a job for a living so that
almost every job in this highly competitive world is increasingly stressful, so can anyone find a job
that has no stress? Perhaps, the answer for this question is always no because stress actually comes
from many causes whether people like it or not. For example, stress comes from bosses, colleagues,
compensation, and jobs pressure. Stress mostly depends on what types of jobs. There are many types
of jobs that are stressful, but people often think about the top three stressful jobs such as police
officers, airline pilots, and firefighters.
One of the most stressful jobs is police officers. Three causes that make police officers stressful are
working long hours and unusual time, strictly conforming to non disclosure policy, and dealing with
many kinds of perpetrators. First, working long hours and unusual time makes them stressful because
they do not have much time to stay together with their family and take care of their children as well.
They start working in the early morning but get off duty late at night. Working during weekend does
not become an unusual task for their job, and sometimes they have to be present urgently by the order
of their chief officer due to a serious case. They unintentionally lose a lot of good chances to celebrate
holidays or birthday parties together with their family. Their jobs bring in a lot of stress for them.

Change and Culture Case Study II
Six months after the merger of Mercy Medical Hospitals and the Promedica Health Systems, the new
administration initiated a significant reduction in workforce. The decision was made to redesign
patient care delivery. The administration s first job redesign recommendation was that of a universal
worker. The universal worker would deliver many support services. Although this is not a fail proof
system, the administration wanted other options to be considered as well.
The term universal worker is used when a person is cross trained in many departments, and therefore
has a little more assignment flexibility. They are often used in call centers and hospitals to alleviate

Changing an organization through an organization redesign process is a journey and generally a rather
long journey. That is why the following three principles must be understood by anyone who is about to
undertake any type of organization redesign:
The entire system has an effect on each element within the system
Every element in the system has an effect on the entire system and on each other
No matter what you do, the two points above always hold true.
When an organization goes through redesign,
1. People need to be identified as being responsible for driving the organization through the process.
Those individuals include:
Organization Leader: Who is generally the most senior person in the organization. This person will set
the direction that the process will go in and names the Steering Committee
Steering Team: Consists of key leaders from the organization and other stakeholders. This teams
responsibilities include naming and commissioning the Design Team, establishing boundaries and
guidelines for the Design Team, approving Design Team recommendation and ensuring the Design
Team have the resources (time and money included) they require to get the job done

upper management. Are responsible for reporting back to their functional teams on design choices

Themes In In The Time Of The Butterflies
During the 1930s 1960s in the Dominican Republic there was a dictatorship going on by Rafael
Trujillo. Trujillo ran the Dominican Republic as his own personal possession. He and his friends held
nearly 60 percent of the country s resources. If things didn t go Trujillo s way then that person who
broke the law would be either prisoned or vanished. In her book, In the Time of the Butterflies , Julia
Alvarez explores many different themes, such as Family, Courage, and Freedom. Each of the Mirabal
sisters had different personalities. Patria the oldest sister was the most religious. Dedé the second
eldest was the only sister who survived. Minerva the third Mirabal sister was the one who was more
wrapped up in the revolution. Maria Teresa the youngest of the sisters just wanted to be like her oldest
sisters. The butterfly is a symbol for the main characters, the Mirabal sisters. Butterflies are unique,
they represent freedom, and they have a very short life span. The Mirabal sisters, much like the
butterflies were unique, and died young. They had to sacrifice their lives in order to be free like
butterflies.
In the book, there are many different themes, but one of the main themes is Family. I don t know who
talked Papá into sending us away to school. (Alvarez 11) Minerva was talking about how her father let
her and her sisters go to school she said this he didn t want them leaving the house alone because he

How important was the Second Reform Act (1867) in...
How important was the Second Reform Act (1867) in Disraeli s emergence as Conservatives leader?
This question focuses on the importance of the Second Reform Act in Disraeli s rise to the top of the
Conservative Party and his emergence as the leader. In order to decide on the relative importance of
the Send Reform Act, I will also consider other factors, which impacted on Disraeli s emergence,
including the 1846 split of the Conservative party and the death of George Bentinck, Derby s
ineffective leadership, Palmerston s death in 1865 and Disraeli s determination and political skill. The
split of the Conservative in 1846 due to the repeal of the Corn Laws and the following death of
Bentinck were important factors in allowing Disraeli ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He managed to make this Bill seem radical enough to satisfy the Radicals and other pressure groups,
while allowing some amendments, which appeased the Liberals. This was crucial o passing the bill
since the Conservatives were in a minority. Whilst boosting Disraeli s reputation and showcasing his
political skill, the Second Reform Act also brought Disraeli popularity among his own MP s. This
links to Derby s leadership, because it was after this Act that Derby recommended Disraeli to Queen
Victoria as his successor. Therefore, it was Disraeli s determination and political skill that passed an
act which led to his leadership of the Conservative Party. There is no doubt that Disraeli possessed a
huge amount of political skill and having assessed all of the factors, I think that this was the most
important factor in explaining his emergence as Conservative leader. Despite his disastrous maiden
speech, Disraeli was a fantastic orator, and this skill was paramount in attacking Peel over the repeal
of the Corn Laws and in cementing his leadership. His determination was proven when he showed his
competence and sound grasp of financial matters in his Budgets of 1858 and 1866, overcoming his
heavy defeat with his 1952 Budget. Disraeli showed his political skill and insight in recognizing the
need for the Party to adopt a more progressive and pro Reform approach, and he worked hard to
convince the backbench members of his party to drop

Essay On Grey s Anatomy
Representation of race and gender is effortlessly shown throughout the American medical drama
series, Grey s Anatomy. It was released on ABC television in 2005 and continued to air until 2016. It
narrates five medical students in Seattle, Washington s hospital in which they all progress through the
seasons to become a doctor. They also goas well through drama and difficult situations, while trying to
keep their personal love lives maintained. One of the best things in Grey s Anatomy is that none of the
characters are perfect; they all have glaring imperfections (Wilson, 2009, p.2). Grey s Anatomy
presents the characters as normal people, dealing with real life problems which gather a wide audience
who can relate to the series. The series ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, the opening scene of the episode shows Derek and Meredith, which are both white
characters. However, the series also tends to represent different races equally, not just heavily focusing
on the white race. The African American character that holds a major role in the series is Richard
Webber, the chief of surgery. During the first episode, he is introduced touring his fellow interns
around the surgical room, while discussing their roles. Another African American character that is
introduced after is Miranda Bailey, with the role of a female superior doctor who speaks in a formal
and assured manner nicknamed as the Nazi in the hospital because of the way she treats her interns.
For example, she is harsh to everyone in the episode which makes the interns come to respect her.
Miranda Bailey offers one of the more intriguing examples of how blackness is figured in a text such
as Grey s Anatomy as a matter of personal and communication style, rather than political and social
differences (Havens, 2013, p. 125). Racial stereotypes are presented in this series differently, as
African Americans are given major roles. This is an advantage towards destroying the racial
stereotype of the audience believing only white characters are intended to main roles. The series also
displays an Asian character, Christina Yang. She is introduced in the first episode as an

Candles Research Papers
Candles are very interesting to learn about. The history of candles go way back. They even have
candles made of tallow (fat from rendered animal fat). Well now in modern times they are mostly
made of wax. Now don t get confused because there are many different types of wax you can use.Now
lets have a jouney down the memory of candles.
Wick
Wick is the little string pointing out of the candle. When you set it on fire the heat travels to the body
of the wax and instantly turns into a liquid and vaporizes. During this process the heat travels 3
different ways at once. These processes are known as conduction, convection, and radiation.
Conduction carries heat down the wick to melt more wax at the top of the candlestick. Convection
draws heat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has no viscoelasticity, it can be polished, it burns with a sooty flame, it s a poor conductor. All the
light a candle makes comes from a chemical reaction called combustion. Candles can also be made out
of beeswax, cream wax, paraffin wax, gel wax, bayberry wax, palm wax, and soy wax. Candles wax
will be used for future decades coming up.
How Candles Are Made and What of Candles can be made out of wax or something called tallow.
Tallow is a hard fatty substance made from rendered animal fat. Tallow consist of a chemical combo
of fatty acids with glycerin. A little borax added or phosphorus is sometimes added to make the ash
fusible. Different types of candle wax burns at different temperatures. The harder the wax the longer
the burn time. The color of the candles makes little to no difference in how fast a candle burns
(colored candles burn faster).
Conclusion
Candles were made by the Romans beginning about 500 BC. With the growth of candles we now
make them out of wax instead of tallow as listed above. The manufacture of candles became an
industrialized mass market in the mid 19th century. Candles were once and now but not that much
used as a source of light before electricity was discovered, and the light bulb discovered.Overall
candles have a very interesting background that most people don t even know about but after reading
this you should be fully packed with a good explanation of

Usually, just right after the New Year s celebration, many of us start looking at the resolutions we
made and, if you re like many people, yours probably resemble more of a grocery list: You want to
exercise more, make more money, have a savings, learn a skill (let s say playing the guitar), get a
better job (so you can make more money) and find a lover (if you haven t found one yet, or the one
you have isn t as loving ).
A typical scenario might be like this: You ll look at this laundry list of New Year s resolutions and you
would pick a goal, let s say one of your goals is to be proficient at the guitar. Then, what you may do
is you would buy a book on how to play a guitar, maybe buy a how to DVD and start practicing at
home. If you re slightly more diligent, you would even start taking some classes. But what about your
other goals, such as making more money? I mean, that minimum wage job really isn t going to help,
unless your definition of making more money is that fifty cent raise coming your way... in about six
months (pending your

Car Marketing And Driving Towards Sex
She is Used: Car Marketing and Driving Towards Sex
Sex? No, thank you; we are civilized, decent and socially appropriate for all ages. This is an applicable
response for any advertising medium until the end of the 1990 s perhaps. Fast forward to the twenty
first century and this notion can be blatantly disregarded. There is no doubt that advertising plays is a
proportional factor automobile sales and even if there this was not so, car manufacturers believe that
marketing helps. During the year 2012 alone, BMW spent approximately 288 million dollars on
advertising in the United States alone, according to www.statista.com. It s safe to say that to brands
like Bayerische Motoren Werke, this is definitely a big deal.
Society has gradually and gracefully molded the minds of men to believe that something used is
unwanted and of an unfavorably lesser value. In a culture that has for so long been male dominated,
this philosophy has been adapted indiscriminately, even to apply to women. For example, in tradition
Italian cultures, a woman may be banished from her family and shunned by her new husband if he
suspects that she was not a virgin when they consummated their marriage. Albeit, there are some that
would rejoice to find that their sheets were not stained but this still does not raise conformity. Italians
are renowned for a bold compensation, the Ferrari brand, and scores of men would desire owning one
regardless of what the odometer reads. The automobile industry has played a

Themes In Snowpiercer
Bong Joon ho s 2013 science fiction film, Snowpiercer, based in a graphic novel of the same name,
offers a look into a frozen future where the last of mankind lives on an evermoving locomotive. It s a
contemporary film focused around the theme of classism in society, driven by metaphors for where we
are and where we are going. With an almost mashup of Orwell meeting the 99%, the story focuses on
the inhabitants of the suppressed population of the train s tail section, led by Chris Evans Curtis,
revolting against the forward living. The film s narrative in relation to its theme is the focal point of
the film and it s main driving force. By using a linear narrative, Joon ho allows the story to move
forward as the characters move towards the front of train. With each decision Curtis makes, the
blocking of his movements is always in a forward motion. He is always looking forward because he
has a definite purpose and only second guesses in a scene (the only scene) where he looks forward and
backward toward two separate outcomes of one decision as the camera follows his head movement in

tell if it s the way he meant the character to be portrayed and that s just Evan s natural charismatic
nature showing through but it adds a layer to the character that makes his decisions and emotions seem
more concrete. The rest of the cast does a great job of carrying out action beats in relation to the
workings of the class and machinery present in the film s screenplay. I do feel that some other

Mise-En-Scne Challenges Linear Temporality
Mise En Scène Challenges Linear Temporality Alfred Hitchcock s Rope (1948) creates suspense
through the dramatic irony of a dinner party where the missing guest s dead body is hidden in the very
chest off of which the guests dine. Brandon (John Dall) and Phillip s (Farley Granger) Nietzschean
ideals are not fully revealed to the audience until the introduction of critical supporting character
Rupert Cadell (James Stewart). An impeccably dressed, suave, intellectual man, Rupert reveals critical
information about the men which eventually spoils Brandon s plan. The expository characterization of
Rupert through performance and costume elements of mise en scène adds important background
information about Brandon and Phillip and challenges them intellectually, thus creating tension around
the linear temporality of Brandon s plan and the plot. Through Stewart s performance, Rupert acts in
ways to indicate a familiarity with Brandon and Phillip which contrasts the forward movement of the
rest of the plot. The film closely follows linear temporality, or a plot which follows chronological
time, through a logical succession of calculated events designed by Brandon to torment his guests.
Rupert challenges, and ultimately foils, this neat progression by interjecting information about the
men s past. Rupert s regressive comments are presented as the audience first meets him through
calling out improvements in Phillip s piano playing. Stewart s performance paints Rupert as an elite
intellectual whom Brandon idolizes. Brandon regresses in his presence, stumbling over his words and
nervously repeating himself, which Rupert likens to his past by saying, You always did stutter when
you were excited. His naming of Brandon and Phillip s faults emphasizes his familiarity with them as
younger men, thus further contrasting the linearity of the story with constant nostalgia. Hitchcock s
manipulation of linear temporality exaggerates a long term cause and effect relationship that would
not be apparent to viewers without Rupert s character spotlighting the past. Viewers learn that Rupert
is the source of Brandon s Nietzschean ideas, and Rupert is forced to come to terms with the terrible
resulting effects of exposing young people to

  • 2. Nationalism Position Paper It can be seen that the source that was given supports nationalism to a certain degree. They explain all of the positive things about embracing nationalism while giving only one small negative point. The positive points clearly prevail over the negative point which helps show the reader the author s position on this issue. It can be seen that only self determined countries are legitimate. The government that runs the nation state, achieves this self determination by gaining and keeping the support of its citizens. This results in the citizens coming together as a civic nation and having great pride in their country. If this self determined country is created from ultra nationalistic beliefs it will lead into a country that believes that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the coup d état, a military General was able to get in control of the country. With his motivational speeches and his recognition from the battles he has won, he was able to gain the trust of the citizens and the army. From seeing what the Germans were doing the General decided to do the same and expand Japan. This led to the invasion of China and the start of the Pacific War. It can be noted that nationalism is not necessarily good; it can lead to major wars and the deaths of many innocent citizens, furthermore; it can also lead to a total annihilation of a race. It can also be seen throughout history that genocides were also caused by ultra nationalism. In 1994 a terrible incident has occurred and that would be the Rwanda genocide. The two groups that were involved in this are the Tutsi and Hutu group. The Tutsi and Hutu had animosity between them and deeply desired to kill each other. Their ultra nationalistic views helped accumulate their anger towards each other. This led to the Hutu s planned assassination on their president. They were able to use this as an excuse in order to destroy the Tutsis. The Hutus blamed the Tutsis for killing their president and went on a rampage which conducted the mass killing of the Tutsis. Also another genocide that was created because of ultra nationalistic views is the Armenian genocide. After the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Euphemism In Communication My intent of this essay is to describe the six major barriers that impact of influence effective business communications. Actually, those barriers are more likely to be known as cliché, jargon, slang, sexist and racist language, euphemisms and doublespeak, which may alter the interpretation of messages as well as subject of relevance, and therefore create sometime a lack of attention and unneeded contradiction among commutators. What is Cliché? According to Random House Dictionary, Cliché is: a trite, stereotyped expression; a sentence or phrase, usually expressing a popular or common thought or idea, that has lost originality, ingenuity, and impact by long overuse, as adder but wiser, or strong as an ox. . it can be considered as ... Patton that some leaders are able to grasp and others cannot? Throughout military history, untold number of plans have been developed and executed with both success and failure. It is not the plan that moves entire Army s across a land mass or storms a country s beach head, but the plan that is developed during a split second between rounds cracking over your head that defines the battle at hand. In today s Army, we as leaders have become inundated with having to know every little piece of information out there that we have become afraid to make certain tactical decisions for fear of not doing it ... My driver and I went inside to get the mission brief, after we waited by the truck to be inspected. That s when the games begin. The Sergeant First Class looked over our license and dispatch paperwork; that tarp that we didn t have just became a problem I never foresaw coming. This SFC didn t think it was safe to put prisoners in the back with no way to hide them. So, out came 1SG. Surely I figured she would be to say yes or no. I was sadly mistaken because before it was over, I was answering questions from the Battalion Commander of this unit. He explained that it wasn t safe to have prisoners being seen by the local populace, which made no sense to me at all. I gave him a simple alternative to fold the seats up and the prisoners could sit on the floor of the bed, thus not being able to be seen by other civilians. This solution didn t appease the LTC because now the prisoners were not safe from a rollover. It took everything I had to not smart off to him and say a canopy wouldn t protect ... The Cicones In The Odyssey Cicones were a Homeric Thracian tribe, whose stronghold in the time of the Odyssey was the town of Ismara, located at the foot of mount Ismara on the south coast of Thrace, in modern Greece. After they raided the Cicones they made there way over to the Land of the Lotus Eaters. The Lotus is a plant which affects your brain when consumed to make you want to stay on the island and eat it for the rest of your life. Some of Odysseus s men were taken over by the lotus plant, but overcame it when the other crew members made them stop. One of the biggest problems Odysseus s crew had to overcome was being turned into swine by Circe. Circe drugged a number of Odysseus s men, which turned them into swine. When Odysseus goes to rescue them, Hermes confronts him in the form of a young man. He tells Odysseus to eat a herb called moly to protect himself from Circe s drug. This discussion is not limited to fast bowling but applies to general skill acquisition as a whole. Most of the research related to fast bowling has focused on biomechanics and back injury prevention and very limited work has been done with factors contributing to bowling speeds. This limited amount mainly consists of theoretical papers, which provide a synthesis of arguments from different papers rather than using a dataset to deduce empirical evidence. The difficultly associated with conducting experiments with a small sample size (limited number of bowlers) and a small number of observations (few deliveries per bowler) may be the reason for the lack of research in this area. A fast bowler s training involves a lot more strength and conditioning than a batsman or any other type of bowler. This highlights the fact that anthropometric factors are of great significance to generating high bowling speeds. This research will attempt to identify the most important anthropometric factors and how well those possibly explain the difference(s) in bowling speeds. To date, little or no attempt

  • 11. The Importance Of Organ Donation Over the past several years, the argument of whether or not compensating donors is ethical and financially benefitting for everyone has been heavily debated. The interest for life saving organ donation has such little supply that the doctors of waiting patients are so desperate that they believe compensation is their only option. Enhanced survival rates combined with unfaltering development of signs for transplantation make the organ deficiency progressively severe; waiting times are now deplorably long. In order to cut the waiting period, compensating donors will promote more individuals to become donors. Although there are many people who disagree with the idea to compensate donors, people who donate their kidneys should be compensated because more individuals will be drawn to donate their kidneys in return for monetary value. Additionally, donors should be compensated because they are giving an organ from their body part away. Individuals and their families pay for dialysis each year hoping they will be chosen to receive the next available organ they have been longing for. These individuals often do not think about how they could be paying a donor for a much lower price instead of dialysis which does not guarantee the organ you desire. The interest for organ donation has reliably surpassed supply, and the large gap between the quantity of recipients on the waiting list and the quantity of donors has increased. If a larger supply of organs was available to the large ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. I Appreciate Barbour s Praiseworthy And Toilsome Effort III. Critique First of all, I appreciate Barbour s praiseworthy and toilsome effort to put theology and science in a meaningful and fruitful dialogue, by seriously taking account of both continuities and discontinuities between scientific metaphors and religious metaphors. For Barbour, because both disciplines have continuities and discontinuities they can contribute to our more comprehensive understanding of the reality of our experiences in the world through their metaphorical relationship. While scientific models, theories, and paradigms are focused on the explanation of natural phenomena, the religious counterparts are more focused on the human experience of their natural/social environments and evoking moral and attitudinal responses, while religious affirmations do not exclude truth claims like the scientific claims do. Also, like religion, scientists also hold on to their traditions in their observation and interpretation of natural phenomena; hence, they are not neutral. In that sense, I agree with Barbour that science and religion bear significant similitude, while they can complement each other in our holistic understanding of our world. Essay on Odysseus as Pawn of the Gods in Homer s Odyssey Odysseus as Pawn of the Gods in The Odyssey Throughout literature characters have relied upon entities greater then themselves to furnish them with aid as they meet the many challenges they must face. The Odyssey is a tale of Odysseus epic journey and the many obstacles that bar his return home. But Odysseus is not alone in this struggle and receives aid from many gods, especially the clear eyed goddess Athena. There are times when Odysseus beseeches the gods for aid, but other times he is too foolhardy to receive aid from even the immortal gods. Odysseus does not control his own destiny, but instead the gods determine what shall befall him and whether he shall ever reach his home. Odysseus is only a man and hard is a god for mortal man to master (36) even if he is great amongst his brethren. William Shakespeare created an art of intertwining often unrecognizable themes within his plays. In Shakespeare s play, The Merchant of Venice, one hidden theme is the idea of homosexuality. This theme might not have even been noticed until modern Shakespeare fans discovered them. According to Alan Bray s book, Homosexuality in Renaissance England, the modern image of the homosexual cannot be applied to the early modern period, when homosexual behavior was viewed in terms of the sexual act and not an individual s broader identity. A closer look at this particular speech, which occurs in Act IV Scene I, can help the reader to better understand Shakespeare s intricate wording that portrays homosexuality in Antonio. The word love is used numerous times in this seventeen line speech given by Antonio. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word love , as a verb, was used by Shakespeare in his plays meaning to entertain a strong affection for; spec. to have a passionate attachment to a person of the opposite sex; to be in love (OED). During this speech, Antonio preaches to Bassanio, Say how I lov d you, speak me fair in death (4.1.271). Taking this statement and placing it against the definition provided, the reader can see that Antonio holds more than just a friendly love towards Bassanio. Before he is about to die, Antonio professes his love to Bassanio. One would think that Antonio would feel angry that he was unable to fulfill a contract that he didn t benefit from. The meaning of Innocence from my opinion is To not be found guilty of a cause or problem eg: Invulnerable. I will be using four pieces of texts to help me back this up. The first text is Hurricane directed by Norman Jewison, Hurricane is about a man named Rubin Carter who s dream is winning the middle weight boxing title but all came to a crash when some unsuspected murders happend. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kuhn argues that paradigms contribute to a sense of order within communities because the community s research is based off of a prearranged set of accepted beliefs. Paradigmatic boundaries contribute to a sense of clarity that results from fact gathering activities within scientific communities. In contrast, the collection of mere facts , which do not stem from paradigmatic boundaries of explanation, results in nothing but puzzlement (Kuhn, 2012, p. 35). As a result, Kuhn argues that paradigms are vital for establishing validity in regard to the questions and findings that are related to fact gathering activities. In contrast, the absence of a paradigm would pose a major disadvantage for a hypothetical scientific community that does not use a paradigm based approach for fact gathering activities. Kuhn believes nothing but confusion could be derived from a collection of facts that belong to endeavors that are not rooted in a scientific community s paradigm. In class, a paradigm was metaphorically compared to the glue that binds a scientific community together. This metaphorical comparison was used in an effort to illustrate the intimate relationship between paradigms and normal science that Kuhn describes in this book. After reading Kuhn s book, and becoming well acquainted with his usage of paradigm in the context of his book, I could not agree more with the argument that he is making throughout this book. Foreign aid represents an important source of finance in most countries in sub Saharan Africa (SSA), where it supplements low savings, narrow export earnings and thin tax bases. In recent years the donor community has become more stringent about fiscal discipline and good policies, which has led to freezing of donor funds to governments that do not conform with aid conditionalities. A well designed aid plan can support effective institutions and governance by providing more knowledge and transferring technology and skills. It is recommended to decentralize the aid flows in recipient countries. Money aid is important but idea aid is even more important. Aid can be the midwife of good policy in recipient countries. In poor policy countries, idea aid is especially more essential than money aid. This implies that in a good policy environment, aid increases growth via the investment channel whereas in a poor policy environment, it nurtures the reforms through policymakers training or knowledge and technology transfer. These non money effects are believed even more important and viable than the money value of aid. Aid works much better where the reform is initiated or internalized by local government rather than when it is imposed by outsiders. Therefore, aid is normally more effective when it facilitates efficiently and timely reforms triggered by the local authority (World Bank, 1998). Perhaps, the answer for this question is always no because stress actually comes from many causes whether people like it or not. For example, stress comes from bosses, colleagues, compensation, and jobs pressure. Stress mostly depends on what types of jobs. There are many types of jobs that are stressful, but people often think about the top three stressful jobs such as police officers, airline pilots, and firefighters. One of the most stressful jobs is police officers. Three causes that make police officers stressful are working long hours and unusual time, strictly conforming to non disclosure policy, and dealing with many kinds of perpetrators. First, working long hours and unusual time makes them stressful because they do not have much time to stay together with their family and take care of their children as well. They start working in the early morning but get off duty late at night. Working during weekend does not become an unusual task for their job, and sometimes they have to be present urgently by the order of their chief officer due to a serious case. • 33. Car Marketing And Driving Towards Sex She is Used: Car Marketing and Driving Towards Sex Sex? No, thank you; we are civilized, decent and socially appropriate for all ages. This is an applicable response for any advertising medium until the end of the 1990 s perhaps. Fast forward to the twenty first century and this notion can be blatantly disregarded. There is no doubt that advertising plays is a proportional factor automobile sales and even if there this was not so, car manufacturers believe that marketing helps. During the year 2012 alone, BMW spent approximately 288 million dollars on advertising in the United States alone, according to www.statista.com. It s safe to say that to brands like Bayerische Motoren Werke, this is definitely a big deal. Society has gradually and gracefully molded the minds of men to believe that something used is unwanted and of an unfavorably lesser value. In a culture that has for so long been male dominated, this philosophy has been adapted indiscriminately, even to apply to women. For example, in tradition Italian cultures, a woman may be banished from her family and shunned by her new husband if he suspects that she was not a virgin when they consummated their marriage. Albeit, there are some that would rejoice to find that their sheets were not stained but this still does not raise conformity. Italians are renowned for a bold compensation, the Ferrari brand, and scores of men would desire owning one regardless of what the odometer reads. The automobile industry has played a ... • 35. Themes In Snowpiercer Bong Joon ho s 2013 science fiction film, Snowpiercer, based in a graphic novel of the same name, offers a look into a frozen future where the last of mankind lives on an evermoving locomotive. It s a contemporary film focused around the theme of classism in society, driven by metaphors for where we are and where we are going. With an almost mashup of Orwell meeting the 99%, the story focuses on the inhabitants of the suppressed population of the train s tail section, led by Chris Evans Curtis, revolting against the forward living. The film s narrative in relation to its theme is the focal point of the film and it s main driving force. By using a linear narrative, Joon ho allows the story to move forward as the characters move towards the front of train. With each decision Curtis makes, the blocking of his movements is always in a forward motion. He is always looking forward because he has a definite purpose and only second guesses in a scene (the only scene) where he looks forward and backward toward two separate outcomes of one decision as the camera follows his head movement in a left and right ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I hadn t seen Chris Evans outside of his Marvel ventures and was impressed by his ability to make his heavily flawed character seem charismatic. It s easy to see why the tail sectioners choose to follow him; he is the the one they deem smart and driven enough to lead them to their journey s end. I can t tell if it s the way he meant the character to be portrayed and that s just Evan s natural charismatic nature showing through but it adds a layer to the character that makes his decisions and emotions seem more concrete. The rest of the cast does a great job of carrying out action beats in relation to the workings of the class and machinery present in the film s screenplay. I do feel that some other characters expositions are not layered enough to evoke any emotion and that does take away from the film s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Mise-En-Scne Challenges Linear Temporality Mise En Scène Challenges Linear Temporality Alfred Hitchcock s Rope (1948) creates suspense through the dramatic irony of a dinner party where the missing guest s dead body is hidden in the very chest off of which the guests dine. Brandon (John Dall) and Phillip s (Farley Granger) Nietzschean ideals are not fully revealed to the audience until the introduction of critical supporting character Rupert Cadell (James Stewart). An impeccably dressed, suave, intellectual man, Rupert reveals critical information about the men which eventually spoils Brandon s plan. The expository characterization of Rupert through performance and costume elements of mise en scène adds important background information about Brandon and Phillip and challenges them intellectually, thus creating tension around the linear temporality of Brandon s plan and the plot. Through Stewart s performance, Rupert acts in ways to indicate a familiarity with Brandon and Phillip which contrasts the forward movement of the rest of the plot. The film closely follows linear temporality, or a plot which follows chronological time, through a logical succession of calculated events designed by Brandon to torment his guests. Rupert challenges, and ultimately foils, this neat progression by interjecting information about the men s past. Rupert s regressive comments are presented as the audience first meets him through calling out improvements in Phillip s piano playing. Stewart s performance paints Rupert as an elite intellectual whom Brandon idolizes. Brandon regresses in his presence, stumbling over his words and nervously repeating himself, which Rupert likens to his past by saying, You always did stutter when you were excited. His naming of Brandon and Phillip s faults emphasizes his familiarity with them as younger men, thus further contrasting the linearity of the story with constant nostalgia. Hitchcock s manipulation of linear temporality exaggerates a long term cause and effect relationship that would not be apparent to viewers without Rupert s character spotlighting the past. Viewers learn that Rupert is the source of Brandon s Nietzschean ideas, and Rupert is forced to come to terms with the terrible resulting effects of exposing young people to ...
