The Collection Of Artefacts And Material Culture And Design
VSAR 3017 Indigenous Art, Culture and Design Journal Lecture: August 15, 2014 The collection of
artefacts and material culture of Aboriginal people have not always been understood and referred to as
art. In a way, museums and avid institutions in the nineteenth century have been seen as institutions of
control, ordering and organising knowledge about people and put them inside a particular framework
in order for them to be understood. Images and tools and practices have become important resources
for Aboriginal people to learn about family history, archives that hold links between artists and their
connections to family and form. Christian Thompson, a sound artist and photographer, is exemplary of
this. In 2011, the Australian Research Council funded a project to research and return historical
photographs from four major European collections to indigenous communities in Australia. Christian
Thompson, We Bury Our Own, a photographic series inspired by the Australian photograph collection
at the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford. Thompson states that he meditated on the archives
content, which ultimately permeated his work and provided him with clarity on the subject. Spiritual
repatriation is a term underpinned by Thompson to describe how the exhibition space was refiguring
relationships between the archive visitors, and the ancestors who reside in the images themselves.
Thompson s work and exhibition could be a focus for a

Review Of Charlotte Perkins Gilman s Gilman
Biography about Charlotte Perkins Gilman s Gilman faced so many problems in her life, but soon or
later she fought those problems and moved on in her life. Her life was very different from normal
human beings. Gilman s lifestyle was very difficult throughout her life from her childhood to end of
her death. When she was a child, she understood the meaning of relationships, but she could not make
a strong relationship with anybody, no matter how hard she tried. The turning point of Gilman s life
was when she experienced a depression. The problem of depression changed her whole entire life. She
experienced so much pain throughout her life. Life is like a roller coaster ride; sometimes its goes up
and down, but when the roller coaster stops, it feels like everything is finally getting perfect. In life
memories are the most important thing, and nobody can take them away. Memories could be good or
bad. Gilman was born in July 03, 1860 in Hartford, CT ( Charlotte ). She committed suicide on August
17, 1935 (Stone). When she was a small girl; her father, Frederick Perkins left his wife and family (
Charlotte ). She was raised by a single mother, Mary Westcott. Her father was a librarian and editor
(Stone). At a young age, she didn t get enough love from her father. They both were in touch with each
other, but she didn t get that love in person. Gilman was not formally educated because she had to

Zar It For Fast Fashion
ZARA: IT for Fast Fashion
Current status of Zara IT Infrastructure and investments:
Zara has historically made minimal investment in IT. Its competitive advantage over other competitors
is not because of its IT infrastructure but because of its integrated supply chain and faster response to
the changing customer taste. Zara s approach to IT was consistent with its decentralized decision
making process. It has proved to be remarkably stable, effective and easy to roll out and maintained
over time. But in order to maintain business competitive advantage, a cost benefit analysis is must
before making any decision to invest in up gradation of IT.

Benefit: The current IT infrastructure has enabled Zara to report a net profit margin of 11.02% in 2002
and also has helped reducing the operating cost by efficient utilization of its supply chain. The up
gradation of current IT system will enable Zara further improve its efficiency thereby increasing its
revenue. It will enable improve its inventory management system because rapidly growing market
may make it difficult for the current old IT system to maintain the same level of efficiency.
Intangible analysis:
Cost: Zara s competitive advantage of efficient, fast and highly responsive supply chain may be at risk
due to fast changing complexity of market environment. Loss of information due to older system may
impact its revenue. Making phone calls to other store managers for checking inventories, is less
productive and time consuming. Small screen of the PDAs make it difficult for the employees in the
stores to use them for ordering purpose and are vulnerable to making errors. Up gradation of the
current system require training of the employees which may take several days or months. There should
be positive inertia among the employees to accept the up gradation of the current system. This much
required inertia is lacking currently which may a threat to the success of the change. The store
employees are comfortable with using the current system. The acceptance of the new system may take

Light And Dark Symbolism In Scarlet Letter
The author of The Scarlet Letter, Nathanial Hawthorne, is constantly using symbolism to keep the
reader engaged and curious. A symbol can stand for one thing but mean another. These include
symbolism s of light and dark, variations of the letter A , weeds and flowers, as well as the scaffold.
Because Nathanial Hawthorne wrote portraying a lot of symbolism, he created a new style of writing.
Hawthorne uses light and dark to symbolize the battle between good and evil. Between Hester, Pearl,
and Chillingworth. The first example is found in the first sentence of chapter one, A throng of bearded
men, in sad coloured garments and grey steeple crowned hats (Hawthorne 11). The use of the color
grey symbolizes sadness and a gloomy setting. Hester s beauty and light is covered up by her sin and
darkness. Hester is the only character that is characterized by both light and dark. Chillingworth is
only characterized by darkness and Pearl is innocent and drawn to the light. The first variation of the
letter A that Hester wears is used to describe adultery. She is made to wear this letter on her chest to
show other people that she is sinful and committed adultery. Despite the big red letter on her chest, her
beauty still shined through. The letter A was meant to have a negative meaning ... Show more content

Hawthorne writes that Chillingworth tortured Dimmesdale, it was observed that he gathered herbs and
the blossoms of wild flowers, and dug up roots and plucked off twigs from the forest trees (83). It
remains evident that Chillingworth was plucking the life out of Dimmesdale. Weeds symbolize
darkness overtaking and how it corrupts society. Hawthorne writes, which evidently found something
congenial in the soil that had so early borne the black flower of civilised society (12). Black flower
simply means non existence. It is expressed as negative and comes to mean the punishment for

Richard Feyman Research Paper
Richard Feynman
What would you say if you could be a person that changed the way we understand the world around us
with new understandings of quantum mechanics? A person that became more than just a renowned
physicist and teacher, but became an icon. Well that person was Richard Feynman. During his
lifetime, he became one of the most well known scientist in the world. Feynman not only made many
contributions to the world of quantum physics, but was also held in high regards for his amazing
ability to teach. Feynman was known to be able to make very complex things easy to understand.
Feynman was described as a very unconventional person. No matter what he was doing he always
brought his funny/different personality with him. So what was Feynman s life like? Where did he
develop his compassion and skill for mathematics and physics? What accomplishments did he achieve

of cancer Feynman developed was Liposarcoma. Liposarcoma is a cancer that arises in fat cells in
deep tissues. The second was Waldenstroms Macroglobulinemia which effects white blood cells,
specifically B cells. Feynman s last big wish was to visit the land of Tuva in Russia. Unfortunately,
due to the Cold War, a visit to Russia was proven to be quite problematic. Feynman would not receive
permission for the visit from Russia until after his passing. Soon after his death, his daughter would go

The Movement Of Child And Youth Care Practice Within The Uk
This paper will focus on key factors which hold prevalence to the movement of child and youth care
practice within the UK. Reference will be made to Child and Youth Care (CYC) within the context of
a Residential Child Care setting (RCCS) which will be defined. Attention will be drawn to the most
significant historical events which have influenced the development of Residential child care (RCC)
and the overarching identity attached to it. Consider will be given to relationship between RCC and
Social Services and the importance of RCC as a single profession. This will include discussion around
knowledge base and qualification of the Residential Child Care Worker (RCCW). For the context of
this paper any reference to RCC or the RCCS will refer to a children s home based in the UK.
Smith et al (2013) describes the RCCS as a children s home, residential school, hospital or secure

Arizona Coyotes ready to welcome youth movement
The Arizona Coyotes are in the middle of an organizational shift, opting to move on from some of
their longest serving players in favor of promoting their top prospects. Opportunities abound and there
are a number of notable prospects who have a chance to make their mark as training camp kicks off.
New additions Anthony Duclair and Maxim Letunov boosted an already deep system after a pair of
trade deadline moves, and Dylan Strome vaulted straight to the top of the Coyotes rankings as the
third overall pick in June s NHL Entry Draft. The system has a number of interesting stories from

How Children s Services Have Evolved Into Their Current Form
This essay will show how and why children s services have evolved into their current form in the UK.
It will explore children s services from the 19th to the 21st century and show how they have changed
and developed. This essay will look at the welfare state in relation to the Beveridge report, the creation
of the NHS and other children s services, political ideologies and policies and legislation. It will
conclude with modern day future challenges of children s services including the five social evils.
Children s services support and protect vulnerable children, young people, their families and carers.
(nhs.co.uk) According to Malcolm Hill (2012), if as societies are to achieve the best for all children
and particularly who are in need, it will require providing them with the best possible services. During
the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, there was great wealth and also great poverty. Most
middle class children worked in factories and mills; factory owners employed children as they didn t
complain and were also cheap to pay. During Victorian Britain, there were no laws to protect children
from work. Lord Shaftesbury argued in parliament for laws to be changed; inspectors went into
factories to find out what they were really like, this resulted in three laws to be passed. These were
1841 Mines Act, 1847 Ten Hour Act and 1874 Factory Act. By 1874 no child under ten would be
employed in factories. (www.bbc.co.uk) In 1870, the government passed a law, drafted

The First Human Organ Transplant
In December of 1954, the first human organ transplant was performed in the United States between
identical twin brothers. In the past sixty years, organ transplantation has become the gold standard in
the treatment of organ failure from a number of underlying causes with dramatic improvements to
recipients health and quality of life (Kaserman, 2007). From the first kidney transplant in 1954 to the
late 1980 s, one of the biggest advancements was the use of cadaver organs. Organ rejection was the
primary concern from the transplant team who knew that the use of cadaver organs posed higher risks
of failure.
The successful use of cadaver organs was made possible by the development of immunosuppressive
drugs like cyclosporine. The practice of utilizing immunosuppressive drugs has led to a decrease of
transplant failure rejection of a new organ by the recipient s own immune system (Kaserman, 2007).
As research continues to look for new ways to decrease organ rejection rates, the majority of
recipients take immunosuppressive drugs and will need to do so indefinitely (Ehlers, 2002). Kaserman
states that as the transplant industry grew, a need for guidelines became apparent and hence requested
that Congress create a governing body (2007). In response, the United States government created the
current system in 1984 which has been revised several times. The system is governed by the National
Organ Transplant Act. NOTA is based off the ethical ideal of altruism: To give freely

homophobic slurs used in the locker room and on the field, granted, Ryan said that even in day to day
life he never felt harmed or hurt by homophobic slurs. However, it is still a major problem in sports.
89 percent of homosexuals heard or felt targeted by homosexual slurs, according to the study. In my
interview with Ryan I asked him if the culture of the locker room needed to be the first thing to
change, he said Absolutely, sometimes it has to start from within a team and then that positive and
encouraging attitude can go on to others.
In my interview with Ryan, he said he never felt targeted but he did hint at the fact that at times the
slurs could be excessive, he aimed responsibility of the needed culture change on the coaching staff.
He spoke about the coaches on one of the teams he played for previously, who used slurs towards the
opposing team, Kinda shocked me, but I recognized it was a motivating factor . Coaches in the sports
are ones who need to step up to the plate and make the world of sports more comforting and help

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz The Tragic Fall of Duddy
A man must pursue his dreams. This is certainly true for everyone of the humankind, for if there were
no dreams, there would be no reason to live. Duddy Kravitz understands this perfectly, that is why he
is one of the most ambitious young men of his time. From the moment he hears his grandfather says, A
man without land is nobody, he is prepared to seek the land of his dream no matter what the cost
would be. This ambition of his is very respectable, but unfortunately his methods are damnable.

This can be clearly seen in his relationships with Virgil and Yvette.
Duddy is never loved in his family, so originally Duddy is quite content to know that there is someone
who cares about him Yvette. He finds great comradeship in her and has also enjoyed great sex with
her.
But as time passes by, Yvette becomes only a tool to him. He uses her as a medium through which he
can buy the land that he lusts for; because he is a minor and he cannot legally own land. The farmers
would be wary of a young Jew, they might jack up prices or even refuse to sell, but another French
Canadian would not be suspect. Duddy also treats her as a sexual toy. He makes love with Yvette
whenever he wants it, but he does not take Yvette s feelings into consideration: Yvette wanted to wait,
but Duddy insisted, and they made love on the carpet.
He never pays any respect to Yvette and he does ...not know how to treat a woman.
With Virgil, Duddy takes advantage of his physical disabilities. After selling the pinball machines that
Virgil brought him to ease his financial troubles, Duddy does not want to repay Virgil. Using the fact
that Virgil is an epileptic and that it is very difficult for him to be hired, Duddy employs him as a
driver. But Duddy tells him that a truck would be necessary for the task, and that he can provide Virgil
with the perfect vehicle for one thousand dollars the exact

Macbeth Blank Verse Essay
Macbeth, a memorable play that keeps its patrons enthralled, but what many do not realize is that what
makes each scene so excellent is Shakespeare s exceptional shifts between blank verse, prose and
rhyme verse all through the play. Throughout Macbeth, Shakespeare switches from using blank verse
to prose and even to using rhyme verse, each time in a manner that perfectly matches the scene.
Shakespeare has used blank verse, prose, and rhyme verse in several other of his poems and plays, and
they are a common technique for Shakespeare. Shakespeare s utilization of these techniques in
Macbeth truly establishes a perfect mood at every instance on whence they are used, displaying a true
mastery of english language. Shakespeare s inclusion of blank verse that is interrupted by both prose

Blank verse is written in a format that is usually used in poems such as its use of iambic rhythm, but
instead it is used as lines in a play. The poetically written lines are very formal and refined, so
speaking in such a way would create an appearance of grace and professionalism that one would
usually show with strangers or as in Elizabethan times even friends would be treated with some
formalities. Treating someone of high stature or relative importance too informally would be
considered rude in the Elizabethan age, as people wanted to be recognized for their earned positions.
Thus, Shakespeare s extensive inclusion of blank verse in Macbeth demonstrates the way people
normally talked during the Elizabethan time period, as royalty such as King Duncan, and dignified
people such as Macbeth and Banquo, speak in blank verse because they are treating each other in a
dignified and formal manner that is befitting of royalty and people of high

The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari Comparative Essay
Horror films are a format of entertainment used to thrill, entice, and scare audiences for years, dating
all the way back to the era of silent film. In the genre, there are many types of horror, which include
expressionism, melodrama, film noir, and science fiction. For the following prose, the style of German
Expressionism will be highlighted by contrasting a film from 1919, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
directed by Robert Wiene, with 2010 film Shutter Island directed by Martin Scorsese. The archetypal
monster both films focus on is the beast within. Essentially, both films have very similar story lines, so
much so that Shutter Island can almost be considered an updated remake of Caligari. In the following,

By distorting the outside world and the characters in it, the audience is thrilled and taken to another
world full of horror and distress in a subjective manner. In The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the set design
is wildly distorted, with construction that had never been seen before. Kristin Thompson and David
Bordwell write, The cutting and camerawork are fairly conservative, but the setting and acting seek to
convey a madman s vision of the world (Bordwell and Thompson 1). The setting itself, a carnival, was
very popular at the time the film was made. The makeup of Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss), and his
somnambulist Cesare (Conrad Veidt) is also included in this bizarre new style of expression. Dr.
Caligari has thick wrinkles drawn on his face, as well as wild hair and dress. Cesare has a very dark
and dismal look, which includes dark eye circles, dark hair, clothing, and chains. In contrast, the
modern film Shutter Island, distorts the set of the movie in a different, yet still terrifying and
subjective manner. The film uses an island as the setting for the film, inhabited only by an asylum for
the criminally insane. It is mentioned that the only way on or off the island is by way of the ferry. The

Meaning of a Classic Song Essay
A great song doesn t attempt to be anything it just is. (Carter). This is a quote from an essay written by
Jay Z in a Rolling Stone article in 2011. Jay Z is a multi platinum recording artist with many hit songs,
including a few that are in Rolling Stone s top 500 songs list. Because of Jay Z s accomplishments,
Rolling Stone felt that he would be a good person to ask about how to make a classic song. Jay Z
references different songs and ideals on what he thinks makes a classic song, but is he really the right

Today, songs have to be able to appeal to the demographic that primarily listens to those radio stations
that play the top songs in the country or the world. That is the main way for an artist to gain popularity
and get the rest of their music out there. The problem with that philosophy is that artists more often
than not have to give up some kind of creative control to achieve their goals. Which means they must
follow certain trends in the music industry at any given time in order to gain or sustain their
popularity. Just because songs get a lot of air play on the radio, does not mean that they are always the
best song when it comes to quality and meaning in the lyrics. Jay Z attested to this in his essay in
Rolling Stone. A song like Can I Live is so full of emotion to me it was better than Hard Knock Life or
Empire State of Mind, but it lacked that accessibility. (Carter). That is saying a lot considering Empire
State of Mind alone has gone platinum five times since its release in 2009. People overall want to hear
songs that make them feel good or that bring up good memories and are easy to remember. That is
why most songs on the radio are up beat with catchy hooks. The music becomes like an infection and
the more a person hears a certain song, the more likely they are to buy it. The problem is that people

The Well-Known Story Of Narcissistic Myth
The etiology of what is known today as Narcissistic Personality Disorder can be traced back to a time
in which humans struggled to identify and define themselves in the world. The well known story of
narcissus, for whom the term Narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder is named after, first
emerged around 8 A.D. The story goes into depth of how Narcissus, a Thespian, the son of the nymph
Leiriope, developed a tenacious pride in his own beauty. A roman poet named Ovid tells the story of
how Narcissus became fascinated and entranced by his own beautiful appearance in a clear spring for
hours at a time in his narrative Metamorphoses. In Robert Grave s version of the story, The Greek
Myths, he summarizes how Narcissus was pursued by heartlessly rejected lovers of both sexes and
turned all of them down because he favored himself more (1955). Graves elaborated on how Narcissus
rejected Echo, whom was a suitor. As professed to his mother by a famous seer, Narcissus will live to
a ripe old age provided that he never knows himself (Graves, 1955). This well known Greek myth has
become the perfect display of Narcissistic Personality Disorder ... Show more content on

Freud believed that narcissism, which he considered a normal and healthy part of human development,
was formed in the stage known as the original libidinal cathexis of the ego (Freud, 1914). In this stage,
Freud makes note of the fact that younger children sometimes have to refocus their libidinal drives
because the child has a hard time differentiating between themselves and their mother (Freud, 1914).
During this hard time that the child has, the energy and drives that are devoted to their care taker are
known as libidinal drives and what is left in the child is seen as narcissistic, as those drives are

Analysis Of Frankenstein By Mary Shelly
One of the most popular formats for literature is a hero faced with seemingly insurmountable struggles
who is able to overcome these obstacles and live happily ever after . However, some of the most
famous books in literature have an extremely different structure to their stories. These books center on
characters of questionable moral integrity, who through their own poor decisions bring about their
own misery and often ultimate demise. When examined this theme of self destruction can be seen in
many of what are considered the greatest books in western civilization. One of the books where this
theme can be seen is in the popular horror story Frankenstein written in 1816 by Mary Shelly. Another
place this can be seen is in many of the writings of Edgar Allen Poe, especially in his physiological
thrillers. An additional place this can be seen is in the play written in 1890 by Henrik Ibsen called
Hedda Gabler. In all of these stories it is the main characters own choices that lead to the destruction
of their happiness. Frankenstein is one of the most famous classic horror stories in today s culture,
having been retold and reimagined countless times. However, when one reads the original book by
Mary Shelly, Frankenstein may be seen as not quite the sympathetic character some more recent
renditions lead one to believe. The book indicates that the main reason Frankenstein is lead to create
his monster is because of his desire for academic prestige and to control and manipulate

Acetone Milk Lab
Utilizing Acetone Powder of Several Organs to Compare Specific Proteins and Measure L Lactate
Dehydrogenase Activity Abstract Animal organs contain a diverse amount of proteins that define their
function. In this study, acetone powder solutions of calf liver, bovine pancreas, chicken muscle,
porcine kidney, porcine brain, and porcine heart were analyzed through an SDS Page gel to determine
diversity of proteins and through an LDH assay to determine enzymatic activity. It was found that
chicken breast muscle contained the most diverse collection of proteins along with the highest LDH
activity. This made reasonable sense considering that the chicken breast muscle is composed of many

Descriptive Essay On Destitute Beauty
Destitute Beauty In the large city of New York, there are many beautiful people. I am not one of them.
I can pass hours away sitting in a coffee shop in a tall seat next to the window, watching the beauties
pass, seeing my reflection against them even more bloated and lumpy than normal. Some of them
notice me. Most of them don t. It doesn t matter. Like I said, New York is a large city, I ll never see
them again. And anyway, I m sure they re used to people staring. How could they not be, they draw
people with their large, black rimmed eyes and lean figures and cutting jawbones like dogs to the
enticing smell of meat. I am just another dog, one they will forget in moments. And when the sun sets,
and the beautiful people fade away and the crowd becomes faceless and intoxicated, that s when I
leave, and where I stay until the sun rises, becoming one with the pulse and throb of the mass.
Promising myself that the next day, yes, the next day, I ll get a job, ignore the cold, gorgeous people,
succeed even with my lumps, and papery skin, and eyes that are just a little too far apart. And the next
day, with my headache, I return. Today is yesterday and the day before. The sun is especially bright
now, almost passive aggressively bright, shining smugly through the haze that buries the city,
bouncing into the small cafe in which I spend most of my time. It s supposed to be homey, with nearly
dead plants hanging skeletal by the windows and overstuffed couches near a coffee table. I sit in the
uncomfortable seat that s almost comically tall, at the only table next to a window. The barista Ellen is
chatting happily with a customer, she barely notices me anymore. Which is fine by me. A woman, with
long legs and hollows under her cheekbones, struts past the café, a mere foot away from me. She
doesn t notice my stare. It s a funny thing. People talk all they want about feeling when people stare at
them, getting goosebumps and looking around frantically for their admirer. But either it isn t true, or I
m not important enough for my stare to mean anything, hold any weight. Searching through the
crowd, I find parts and pieces that I want most, playing a game I often play. Her taut stomach, her long
legs, her bright eyes,

History Of The Women s Suffrage Movement
There will never be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect
lawmakers. This is a quote from Susan B. Anthony acknowledging the women s suffrage movement.
After the abolition of slavery in 1865, voting rights were extended to all citizens, however citizens in
this case meant, men only. As a result of only men having voting rights, women started advocating the
women s suffrage movement. The women s suffrage movement or woman suffrage was the struggle
for women to vote and run for office. This movement began in 1848 and it continued until 1920. There
were many women involved in this movement, but the two most important women were Susan B.
Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Susan and Elizabeth campaigned for women ... Show more

Many men who went against women voting would argue that women should stay home and clean.
Men have said things such as, You do not need a ballot to clean out your sink spout, and because 90%
of the women either do not want it, or do not care . This things were written in a pamphlet published
in 1910 by the organization, National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage. Artists created
political cartoons that mocked suffragists, religious leaders opposed women who were part of the
women s suffrage movement, and articles also criticized woman who took part in this movement. On
the other hand, many men supported suffragists. Men such as; Frederick Douglas, George Francis
Train, Thetus W. Sims, James Mott, Daniel Anthony, Henry Blackwell, and Francis Minor. Frederick
signed the Declaration of Sentiments at the Seneca Falls Convention because while everyone else
criticized Elizabeth Cady Stanton. George Francis Train helped Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady
Stanton by funding their own newspaper called, The Revolution ; he would write on the newspaper.
Tethus W. Sims voted in favor of suffrage in 1918. James Mott was Lucretia Mott s husband and he
supported her in the women s rights activist. James was also one of the men who signed the
Declaration of Sentiments. Daniel Anthony was Susan B. Anthony s father who was a women s rights
advocate. Henry Blackwell served as an editor for the official women s right newspaper. Francis

The goal of an architect is to design accordingly to the...
The goal of an architect is to design accordingly to the time with an understanding of the relationship
between space and activity. In his essay Space and Events, Bernard Tschumi says, There is no space
without even, no architecture without program. He then continues with, Architecture cannot be
dissociated from the events that happen in it (Tschumi, 139).
Spaces have always been assimilated with past references, which create a type of familiarization and
attachment to the past that prevents time from moving forward. Because of this assumption about the
form, function, and meaning; thus architecture has been restricted by these familiarization and these
assumptions. The history of architecture has been a history of styles. Through ... Show more content

Even though geographical diversity and intellectual pluralism has characterized architecture, it does
not mean that the attempt at discerning broader patterns and longer lines of development should be
abandoned (Curtis, 657). As time proceeds, styles and ideas change, and new paradigms arise,
crystalizing the underlying concerns of that period. In the inner recesses of the mind time is
telescoped; deriving from inspiration from the past while also considering the significance of modern
space, old and new idea are combined resulting in new unexpected results (657). For example in the
Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, Foster abandons the usual notion of stacked floors around a central
core and exploded open it to accommodate a vertical atrium at the center which provided a new vision
of the work space (659). Another example is how Toyo Ito suggests that the skin of a building might
be thought of as a screen upon various lights and shadows are projected (668).This followed Tschumi
s idea of manipulation of the known with its implicit mannerism, which is using things and
simultaneously disbelieving in them (666). While understanding of the relationship between space and
event, the architect must also design accordingly to the time. The influence of phenomenology creates

Essay on COLD MOUNTAIN
COLD MOUNTAIN
The story of quot;Cold Mountain quot; is a best selling novel and it is the first
book written by Charles Frazier. It took years of research before he could
write this novel.
The plot of Cold Mountain is really and old idea, in fact it is an ancient one. The plot is the same as
the one in an ancient book by Homer.
The story I am referring to is quot; The Odyssey quot;. The Odyssey is a book
about a wounded soldier trying to find his way back home and his
sweetheart, Penelope that is waiting for his return. Cold Mountain is the
story of a wounded Confederate soldier that was wounded, deserts, and

The second part of the plot in this story is about Inman s sweetheart,
Ada. Ada has a much different odyssey than Inman, but just as perilous.
She is learning about herself, friendship, and survival.
In the beginning, Ada is trying to cope with the death of her father. Her
father, a preacher, bought her to the mountains and kept her sheltered from
the ways of the world. While he tried to give her a good life, he never
prepared he for the real world, as you will see later.
Ada was raised in Charleston, South Carolina. She was raised in an
aristocratic society where work was never experienced and money took
care of everything. Ada had no idea how to live from day to day on a farm.
Which is where she was stranded after her father died. During the war, all
the able bodied men were gone to fight and her hired help had moved away
months earlier. To make matters worse, she discovers that her father s
death had left her penniless.
Ada s desperation all changed when she takes Ruby into her home.
Ruby is a young but wise country girl that has had to rely on her own
abilities to get by for most of her life. Ruby is pretty much Ada s savior at
this point. Ruby teaches her all about running a farm, preparing food, and
how to take care of herself without depending on money.

The Spread and Localization of Buddhism and Islam into...
The spread of religion first began through contact with neighbouring countries which gradually
expand throughout the years. Buddhism and Islam are one of the most widespread religions across
Southeast Asian countries like Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
Trade merchants and imperial support of the religion were major factors in the facilitation and
localization of the spread of Buddhism and Islam within Southeast Asia. However, there were also
limitations presented which hindered the development of each religion in within their countries as
introduction of newer religions and changes to political and imperial power would have affected the
progression to become fully localised pre 1800s.

This facilitated the increasing practice of Buddhism in Southeast Asia attributable to influences from
foreign Buddhist merchants to the nations thus integrating itself into civilization and daily life (Adler
and Pouwels 2008, 64).
Imperial support played a major part in facilitation and localisation of the spread of Buddhism into
Southeast Asia. Asoka, as mentioned, was a big supporter of Theravada Buddhism and was deemed an
exemplar for future Buddhist emperor to establish Buddhism as a part of the country s traditions and
lifestyle (Swearer 2010, 71). He believed that true conquest of a country was by the force of the
teachings of religion (Swearer 1997, 89). Through his persistent method of conquest, he influenced
several Theravada Buddhist rulers like King Kyanzittha of Pagan, Burma and King Tilokaraja of
Chiang Mai, Thailand during 11th and 15th century respectively to position Buddhism as a part of
their reign, conquest and authority (Swearer 2010, 71). This significantly enabled the localization of
Buddhism into Southeast Asia especially in countries like Thailand who remains supportive of
Buddhism as declared by the Chakri dynasty from the end of 18th century onwards (Bowker 2007,
150). It was through the support of imperial power that led the countries citizens to gain interest in and

Analysis Of Reyna Grande s The Distance Between Me
In the memoir The Distance Between us, written by Reyna Grande in 2012, U.S., Reyna Grande told
her story from childhood to adulthood, she described her relationship with her family and how it was
affected by the distance between them. In her childhood, she was separated from her father and later
from her mother, making her live with her grandmother Evila. A few years later, her mother, Juana,
returned to Mexico, but she wasn t the same happy and sweet mother Reyna had remembered, and it
was because Reyna s father got another woman. Later in the story, Reyna s father returned to Mexico
and decided to take the kids with him to the U.S. In the second half of the memoir, Reyna described
her life in the U.S., her experiences, the abuses she received and how she went through a lot of things
to become a successful woman. At the ending of the story, she described her feelings towards her
father in a bittersweet way: What was needed was something I was struggling to give my forgiveness.
The day before my thirty sixth birthday, I found myself at my father s hospital bed as his life support
was turned off. As I held my father s hand, and my life with him flashed through my mind, I thought
about that question I had often asked myself: If had known what life with my father would be like,
would I still followed him to El Otro Lado? You made me who I am, I thought as he took his last
breath. And I knew then that the answer to my question was yes (322, Grande). The Distance

William And Mary Rule 1750-1910
William III of Orange, Stadtholder of the United Provinces of Netherlands, King of England,
Scotland, and Ireland(ruled 1689 1702) was born in Netherlands in 1650, and died in London. Queen
Mary II of England, Scotland, and Ireland was the daughter of King James born on 1662 who ruled
from 1689 to her death, 1694 (William). These two monarchs ruled England, Scotland, and Ireland
together in what was called the William and Mary rule. Their rule resulted in the formation of the
English Bill of Rights, creation of a more restricted monarchy, creation of the Cabinet system of
governance, creation of the Bank of England, formation of national debt, and the spark of the war of
Spanish Succession (William, Harris William, Burkholder).

English power and for the first time, promoted Britain as one of the major powers of Europe

and outside of Europe, which was a large development that gave way to further expansion of the
Protestant faith. The war of spanish succession was started mostly because of two factors, including
the Anti French, Anti Catholic agenda of Queen Mary II and King William III, and the establishment
of the national bank in England (William, Harris William, Harris Glorious). The Anti French, Catholic
agenda of the joint rulers was of great importance as it stripped away the power of the Catholic church
and greatly promoted the power of the states themselves. The establishment of the national bank was
also very important as it was the first occurance of a debt based economy(William). The creation of
the bank allowed for vast expansion of the British Military which consequently lead to the expansion
of the British kingdom, promoting the formation of an empire, one of the most important concepts of

Essay Cannibalism
Cannibalism
Cannibalism has been around since the beginning of time. Mainly as an act of defense or as an
alternate, last resort, for food. Cannibalism is also used as an act of violence among animals to
preserve their genetics. Human cannibalism however, was not used as an act of violence to cause pain
and anguish amongst other human beings. Cannibalism within the human race is widely known
throughout the world, though you may not know it. From New Guinea to the high deserts of Arizona
the practice of cannibalism has been used. Why cannibalism was practiced is still a mystery to many.
Some think it actually was an act of violence, to torture the souls of others as revenge for invading the

Endocannibalism, also called funeral cannibalism, is the eating of a dead relative. The Fore women of
New Guinea practiced this type of cannibalism; a loved one would die and the female relatives of the
deceased would eat the brains while the men ate the muscle and internal organs. The body of the one
who died was thought to help the still living become stronger; the deceased body was a source of
nourishment. The Amazonian tribe of the Wari thought that the deceased would pass on and be
reincarnated as an animal providing food, once again, to the tribe. Among the Wari people it was to
confirm that the loved one had passed into the afterlife and was to be re incarnated as an animal
(Marsh).
Exocannibalism is the eating of enemies or strangers, and warning other tribes not to set foot on that
particular piece of land.
Aztec cannibalism formed part of their religious cosmology. The sun god had to be nourished with
hearts and blood of human beings. Without cannibalizing their enemies, the Aztecs believed their
world would collapse (Marsh).
It was with the intention of saving themselves that they acted on cannibalism, without it their whole
race would be demolished.
Medicinal cannibalism, or using human remains as medicine, was used greatly among the ancient
Egyptians. Human remains were thought to be of good medicine getting rid of anything from a skin
rash to infertility. The ingestion of human remains, particularly powdered human

Julius Caesar Propaganda

famous lines ever uttered by a person in history. No one can doubt that. In a time of turmoil, hatred,
fear, and hope, these speakers have come forth to create produce reverence in their foes. The Tragedy
of Julius Caesar, written by William Shakespeare, is a fantastic example of the power of language and
speech in front of the citizens who believe and trust their leaders. Language is power, and the ability to
use language and speech is the power needed to rule an empire. Although sometimes used for hate,
language and speech, especially in Julius Caesar, is a potent tool and weapon used to fight for beliefs

Shakespeare thought about the important use of propaganda as a political weapon for many characters,
most importantly Antony and Murellus. As Caesar triumphs home from his defeat over Pompey, the
audience can see Murellus clearly upset, stating, Wherefore rejoice? What conquest brings he home? |
What tributaries follow him to Rome | To grace in captive bonds his chariot wheels? | You blocks, you
stones, you worse than senseless things! (I.i.32 35) The use of propaganda here is quite obvious,
Murellus is upset that Caesar, in his mind, was unjust in taking the throne and slandering him to the
people. He also slanders the people of Rome, calling them worse than senseless beings to provoke
either strong emotion or fear within them. Power comes from language and speech here by evoking
emotions inside and making your opponents vulnerable and weak. That s what propaganda has always
been used for. Shakespeare s deeper meaning in Julius Caesar is that everyone is weak and vulnerable,
no matter who or what you are. Everyone can have their emotions taken out by others, and speech is
the tool and weapon to make opponents weak. Antony resembles this idea of a powerful figure using
propaganda and slander as his weapons further in the play when at Caesar s funeral. In front of the
many plebeians at Antony s funeral, who were in favor of Brutus at the time, Antony announced, So
are they all, all honorable men | Come I to speak in Caesar s funeral. | He was my friend, faithful and
just to me. | But Brutus says he was ambitious | And Brutus is an honorable man. (III.ii.82 86) Antony
is showing the people of Rome how Brutus was an honorable man, although he was ambitious to get
the throne. A sob story is what Antony is producing, showing the people he loved Caesar, but Brutus
must be right for killing him, he is honorable.

began asking questions and drove out to the compound to investigate. The investigation never found
any wrong doing by Koresh, however, their concern was the gun safety of the camp. Koresh had

to a 51 day standoff where FBI negotiators communicated with Koresh inside the compound. They felt
Koresh was holding his followers hostage and delayed surrendering them because he claimed that he

Narcissistic Personality Disorder Essay
Everyone knows someone who seems to be completely wrapped up in themselves. They seem to only
care about themselves, and they seem to think that they are better than every one. Some of these
people probably have narcissistic personality disorder. This personality disorder is defined as, ...a
broad pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy (Comer, 2010, p. 531). People
with narcissistic personality disorder are convinced of their own greatness; whether it be their success,

This too is typical of people with narcissistic personality disorder. People with this disorder tend to be
very picky, or choosey, when it come to who their friends and associates are. Since they consider
themselves to be special, they think that only those who are also special are deserving of their time. A
narcissistic personality may also surround themselves with dependent personalities, because those
with dependent personalities will give them the constant praise and adulation that they require. Again
we turn to Brother John for an example, He is an excellent teacher and has inspired many students. He
has always had a group of students, usually dependent personalities... (Rosetti, 1999). These students
would often be called upon to defend Brother John when his behavior was questioned by supervisors.
Brother John using his students in this way touches upon another trait common to those with
narcissistic personality disorder. People with this disorder are often manipulative, and use other to
achieve their own ends. According to Ronald Comer, they may do this partly out of envy (2010, p.
234). I think that it is more likely that this is just a branch of another common character trait amongst
those with narcissistic personalities, that being a lack of empathy. People with this disorder are seldom
interested in the feelings of others, and so they probably never take those feelings into consideration
when they are manipulating

Examples Of Indecision In Hamlet
Indecision, by dictionary definition is simply the inability to make decisions quickly. However,
indecision itself is not actually such an intelligible term, but rather an overly complex one that dips
into the intricate nature of the human mindset. This becomes even more accurate when the act of
indecisiveness is paired with compelling circumstances. Oftentimes human beings are required to act
irrationally because their circumstances force them to do so. Our opinions and actions seem
justifiable, yet they may also come across as deceitful and immoral. The overriding internal conflict of
choosing between personal desire and what is morally correct becomes the central aspect of many
human trials. William Shakespeare, the writer of many well known ... Show more content on

Ophelia is Hamlet s love interest throughout the entire play. However, in an attempt to be strategic,
Hamlet feigns insanity in order to be deceiving and in turn breaks Ophelia s heart. His sudden
disinterest towards her coupled with her father Polonius and brother Laertes commands to stay away
from Hamlet composes a dire internal conflict within Ophelia s mind. She is torn between her undying
love for Hamlet versus her desire to be an obedient daughter and sister. In addition, Hamlet
unintentionally murders Polonius rather than Claudius, which also adds to Ophelia s insanity. To make
matter worse, Ophelia has no mother figure within her life. So taken all together, she is stuck in a

provides young people with opportunities to organize group activities, resolve interpersonal conflicts,
solve problems, and sustain the consensus and cooperative relationships required to play competitive
games (Martinek Hellison, 1997). * Playing organized, adultcontrolled sports provides young people
with opportunities to participate in relationships with adult authority figures and engage in rule
governed teamwork in the pursuit of a shared goal. * Youth sports expand a young person s social
network when they are organized to facilitate meaningful interaction with teammates and opponents. *
Young people are less likely to engage in violence off the field when they participate in sport
programs that teach a philosophy of nonviolence, respect for self and others, the importance of fitness
and self control, confidence in physical skills, and a sense of responsibility to self and others. * When
young people participate in local, community sponsored youth sport, they are more likely to become
engaged in civic activities as adults. * Youth sport provides opportunities to meet adults who may

Walker who develops a relationship and strikes a life altering deal with the devil. The short story takes
place in the time period of 1727 near Boston, Massachusetts when Puritans were very prevalent and
the ideas of Calvinism were contemplated by many. A main aspect of Calvinism Washington Irving
disagrees with is called predestination. This belief is when one does not have control of their afterlife
because it is already chosen by God. I ll be exploring Calvinist and Puritan beliefs along with the
concept of the faustian deal to show why Irving had Tom Walker agree to such a lopsided pact with
the devil. To further understand Tom Walker s personality and how it contradicted Calvinism, I will
also be exploring what was the perception of death for Bostonian Puritans around 1727?
Understanding the Puritan perception of death is central to understanding why Tom easily sold his
soul to the devil. Through the encounter with the devil at the Native American stronghold, Tom s wife
dying and the faustian deal, Washington Irving shows he is against the Calvinist belief of
predestination brought to the Massachusetts Bay colonies. The nature of the Native American
stronghold and remarks said here by the devil are interesting examples of how Washington Irving
shows he is against the concept of predestination. Predestination is both introduced for the first time in
the short story and is

Cultural Assessment of the Korean American
Cultural Assessment of a Korean American Culture includes the customs, traditions, ideas, and ways
of interacting with the environment that often differ in various parts of the world. Over the last several
decades in the U.S. there has been a growing awareness and tolerance of cultures other than the
traditional western culture in the community. And in healthcare we are expected to provide all patients
and families with the same respect and treatment, but at the same time provide individualized care. In
order to meet these standards the work place environment has responded with training and education
on cultural competence. The term cultural competence can be defined by the ability to respect and
understand the beliefs and attitudes of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And she also told me that many of the older generation do not speak English other than a few words,
even if they have live in US for many years. Due to the strong family ties the elderly rely on their
children to translate for them. She said that many of the older generation have only immigrated to the
U.S. to follow their children and that because of this they expect their children to accommodate them
and to communicate for them when needed.
Parenting Styles and Roles of Family M.S. explained that the Korean culture has very defined family
roles with the male dominating over the female. The male in the home is identified by M.S. as being
the traditional bread winner . She noted that it is important to a man s identity that he is able to work
even as he ages. The females are allowed, and often needed to work, but the care for the children at
home as well as for the aging parents of both the husband and wife is priority. M.S. told me that she
was only allowed to work certain shifts and hours due to the need to accommodate her family. As
mentioned earlier it is the strong tradition of respect for parents and grandparents that encourages the
arrangement of caring for the elderly at home, and if at all possible to never place a parent in an
institution such as a nursing home. M.S. stated that the family as a unit is collectively more important
and individualism is frowned upon. When I asked M.S. about adoption she

Women and Gender Studies
The depictions of lesbians throughout the TV industry and other forms of media is often used to
increase ratings, sexually titillate men and for entertainment purposes. The problem the culture

In more recent events Ellen finds herself the host of her own daytime talk show, The Ellen Degeneres
Show, which has consistently increased in ratings and received widespread critical praise. The success
of the show is proof that mainstream media has frown to be not only tolerant of the lifestyle but also
be acceptant of it.
Mainstream media s portrayal of lesbians is one that is constantly evolving and should be monitored
because it holds an incredible influence on how one perceive certain types of individuals that one does
not normally interact with. Organizations like the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation
(GLAAD) are dedicated to promoting the fair and accurate representation of gay, lesbian, bisexual,
and transgender individuals in the media. The group itself became better known in the 80 s in light of
the AIDS crisis. Over the years GLAAD s efforts have had an impact in the media. Ranging from the
years of 1989 to 1996 they managed to get the New York Times to change its editorial policy to allow
the use of the word gay, they protested CBS commentator Andy Rooney for a remark that he said,
which resulted in him being suspended, and also partnered with Drug Free America to alter the public
service announcement that seemed to imply that homosexuality was worse than drug addiction.

International Guidance Essay
Memorandum To: Mr. Thomas Stearns, Project Manager, International Guidance and Controls From:
Date: October 2, 2012 RE: Software Project for CARV Command and Guidance System
_____________________________________________________________________ I have recently
received and reviewed your memorandum regarding your issue with the Confined Aquatic Recovery
Vehicle project. I have considered three options and their ability to save your company as much
money as possible while completing this project in a timely manner. The three alternatives I
considered were to immediately invest in hardware, to stay on your current path with the software
developments only or to wait and reevaluate your situation in five months. Each of these ... Show

Lastly, option number three (Attachment 2), to wait five months and continue with software
developments and then reevaluate the progress of the situation, resulted in the lowest EMV of $3.29
million. For the third alternative, I have made sure to consider your estimates of the favorable and
unfavorable progress possibilities that could affect the situation in five months. For each of the
calculated EMV s, I assumed that two months was the maximum amount of extra time needed if the
software developments were not completed on time. As you stated in your memo, one or two months
extra would suffice for the developments but there is always a chance that two months will not be
enough time in which case the EMV would go up. I also assumed that your probabilities would prove
to be accurate. Variations in the probabilities would also cause the EMV to change. Reputation
Analysis: The EMV calculations previously discussed did not take into account the intangible cost of a
damaged reputation in the event that the project is not completed on time. The costs cannot be certain
because they have no concrete value but I have done my best to estimate the impact of a damaged
reputation based on the EMV calculations stated above (Attachment 3). Continuing with your current
software developments is immediately ruled out because the costs continue to go up and are the
highest of the three

The Collection Of Artefacts And Material Culture And Design VSAR 3017 Indigenous Art, Culture and Design Journal Lecture: August 15, 2014 The collection of artefacts and material culture of Aboriginal people have not always been understood and referred to as art. In a way, museums and avid institutions in the nineteenth century have been seen as institutions of control, ordering and organising knowledge about people and put them inside a particular framework in order for them to be understood. Images and tools and practices have become important resources for Aboriginal people to learn about family history, archives that hold links between artists and their connections to family and form. Christian Thompson, a sound artist and photographer, is exemplary of this. In 2011, the Australian Research Council funded a project to research and return historical photographs from four major European collections to indigenous communities in Australia. Christian Thompson, We Bury Our Own, a photographic series inspired by the Australian photograph collection at the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford. Thompson states that he meditated on the archives content, which ultimately permeated his work and provided him with clarity on the subject. Spiritual repatriation is a term underpinned by Thompson to describe how the exhibition space was refiguring relationships between the archive visitors, and the ancestors who reside in the images themselves. • 5. Light And Dark Symbolism In Scarlet Letter The author of The Scarlet Letter, Nathanial Hawthorne, is constantly using symbolism to keep the reader engaged and curious. A symbol can stand for one thing but mean another. These include symbolism s of light and dark, variations of the letter A , weeds and flowers, as well as the scaffold. Because Nathanial Hawthorne wrote portraying a lot of symbolism, he created a new style of writing. Hawthorne uses light and dark to symbolize the battle between good and evil. Between Hester, Pearl, and Chillingworth. The first example is found in the first sentence of chapter one, A throng of bearded men, in sad coloured garments and grey steeple crowned hats (Hawthorne 11). The use of the color grey symbolizes sadness and a gloomy setting. Hester s beauty and light is covered up by her sin and darkness. Hester is the only character that is characterized by both light and dark. Chillingworth is only characterized by darkness and Pearl is innocent and drawn to the light. The first variation of the letter A that Hester wears is used to describe adultery. She is made to wear this letter on her chest to show other people that she is sinful and committed adultery. • 11. The First Human Organ Transplant In December of 1954, the first human organ transplant was performed in the United States between identical twin brothers. In the past sixty years, organ transplantation has become the gold standard in the treatment of organ failure from a number of underlying causes with dramatic improvements to recipients health and quality of life (Kaserman, 2007). From the first kidney transplant in 1954 to the late 1980 s, one of the biggest advancements was the use of cadaver organs. Organ rejection was the primary concern from the transplant team who knew that the use of cadaver organs posed higher risks of failure. The successful use of cadaver organs was made possible by the development of immunosuppressive drugs like cyclosporine. The practice of utilizing immunosuppressive drugs has led to a decrease of transplant failure rejection of a new organ by the recipient s own immune system (Kaserman, 2007). As research continues to look for new ways to decrease organ rejection rates, the majority of recipients take immunosuppressive drugs and will need to do so indefinitely (Ehlers, 2002). Kaserman states that as the transplant industry grew, a need for guidelines became apparent and hence requested that Congress create a governing body (2007). In response, the United States government created the current system in 1984 which has been revised several times. The system is governed by the National Organ Transplant Act. Treating someone of high stature or relative importance too informally would be considered rude in the Elizabethan age, as people wanted to be recognized for their earned positions. Which means they must follow certain trends in the music industry at any given time in order to gain or sustain their popularity. The Well-Known Story Of Narcissistic Myth The etiology of what is known today as Narcissistic Personality Disorder can be traced back to a time in which humans struggled to identify and define themselves in the world. The well known story of narcissus, for whom the term Narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder is named after, first emerged around 8 A.D. The story goes into depth of how Narcissus, a Thespian, the son of the nymph Leiriope, developed a tenacious pride in his own beauty. A roman poet named Ovid tells the story of how Narcissus became fascinated and entranced by his own beautiful appearance in a clear spring for hours at a time in his narrative Metamorphoses. In Robert Grave s version of the story, The Greek Myths, he summarizes how Narcissus was pursued by heartlessly rejected lovers of both sexes and turned all of them down because he favored himself more (1955). Graves elaborated on how Narcissus rejected Echo, whom was a suitor. Analysis Of Frankenstein By Mary Shelly One of the most popular formats for literature is a hero faced with seemingly insurmountable struggles who is able to overcome these obstacles and live happily ever after . However, some of the most famous books in literature have an extremely different structure to their stories. These books center on characters of questionable moral integrity, who through their own poor decisions bring about their own misery and often ultimate demise. When examined this theme of self destruction can be seen in many of what are considered the greatest books in western civilization. One of the books where this theme can be seen is in the popular horror story Frankenstein written in 1816 by Mary Shelly. Another place this can be seen is in many of the writings of Edgar Allen Poe, especially in his physiological thrillers. An additional place this can be seen is in the play written in 1890 by Henrik Ibsen called Hedda Gabler. In all of these stories it is the main characters own choices that lead to the destruction of their happiness. And when the sun sets, and the beautiful people fade away and the crowd becomes faceless and intoxicated, that s when I leave, and where I stay until the sun rises, becoming one with the pulse and throb of the mass. Promising myself that the next day, yes, the next day, I ll get a job, ignore the cold, gorgeous people, succeed even with my lumps, and papery skin, and eyes that are just a little too far apart. And the next day, with my headache, I return. Today is yesterday and the day before. The sun is especially bright now, almost passive aggressively bright, shining smugly through the haze that buries the city, bouncing into the small cafe in which I spend most of my time. It s supposed to be homey, with nearly dead plants hanging skeletal by the windows and overstuffed couches near a coffee table. I sit in the uncomfortable seat that s almost comically tall, at the only table next to a window. The barista Ellen is chatting happily with a customer, she barely notices me anymore. Which is fine by me. A woman, with long legs and hollows under her cheekbones, struts past the café, a mere foot away from me. She doesn t notice my stare. It s a funny thing. People talk all they want about feeling when people stare at them, getting goosebumps and looking around frantically for their admirer. But either it isn t true, or I m not important enough for my stare to mean anything, hold any weight. Anthony acknowledging the women s suffrage movement. After the abolition of slavery in 1865, voting rights were extended to all citizens, however citizens in this case meant, men only. As a result of only men having voting rights, women started advocating the women s suffrage movement. The women s suffrage movement or woman suffrage was the struggle for women to vote and run for office. This movement began in 1848 and it continued until 1920. In his essay Space and Events, Bernard Tschumi says, There is no space without even, no architecture without program. He then continues with, Architecture cannot be dissociated from the events that happen in it (Tschumi, 139). Spaces have always been assimilated with past references, which create a type of familiarization and attachment to the past that prevents time from moving forward. Even though geographical diversity and intellectual pluralism has characterized architecture, it does not mean that the attempt at discerning broader patterns and longer lines of development should be abandoned (Curtis, 657). As time proceeds, styles and ideas change, and new paradigms arise, crystalizing the underlying concerns of that period. In the inner recesses of the mind time is telescoped; deriving from inspiration from the past while also considering the significance of modern space, old and new idea are combined resulting in new unexpected results (657). For example in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, Foster abandons the usual notion of stacked floors around a central core and exploded open it to accommodate a vertical atrium at the center which provided a new vision of the work space (659). Another example is how Toyo Ito suggests that the skin of a building might be thought of as a screen upon various lights and shadows are projected (668).This followed Tschumi s idea of manipulation of the known with its implicit mannerism, which is using things and simultaneously disbelieving in them (666). What conquest brings he home? | What tributaries follow him to Rome | To grace in captive bonds his chariot wheels? | You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things! (I.i.32 35) The use of propaganda here is quite obvious, Murellus is upset that Caesar, in his mind, was unjust in taking the throne and slandering him to the people. He also slanders the people of Rome, calling them worse than senseless beings to provoke either strong emotion or fear within them. Power comes from language and speech here by evoking emotions inside and making your opponents vulnerable and weak. That s what propaganda has always been used for. Shakespeare s deeper meaning in Julius Caesar is that everyone is weak and vulnerable, no matter who or what you are. Everyone can have their emotions taken out by others, and speech is the tool and weapon to make opponents weak. Antony resembles this idea of a powerful figure using propaganda and slander as his weapons further in the play when at Caesar s funeral. Examples Of Calvinism In The Devil And Tom Walker The Devil and Tom Walker (1824) by Washington Irving is a faustian tale about a man named Tom Walker who develops a relationship and strikes a life altering deal with the devil. The short story takes place in the time period of 1727 near Boston, Massachusetts when Puritans were very prevalent and the ideas of Calvinism were contemplated by many. A main aspect of Calvinism Washington Irving disagrees with is called predestination. This belief is when one does not have control of their afterlife because it is already chosen by God. I ll be exploring Calvinist and Puritan beliefs along with the concept of the faustian deal to show why Irving had Tom Walker agree to such a lopsided pact with the devil. To further understand Tom Walker s personality and how it contradicted Calvinism, I will also be exploring what was the perception of death for Bostonian Puritans around 1727? Understanding the Puritan perception of death is central to understanding why Tom easily sold his soul to the devil. Through the encounter with the devil at the Native American stronghold, Tom s wife dying and the faustian deal, Washington Irving shows he is against the Calvinist belief of predestination brought to the Massachusetts Bay colonies. International Guidance Essay Memorandum To: Mr. Thomas Stearns, Project Manager, International Guidance and Controls From: Date: October 2, 2012 RE: Software Project for CARV Command and Guidance System _____________________________________________________________________ I have recently received and reviewed your memorandum regarding your issue with the Confined Aquatic Recovery Vehicle project. I have considered three options and their ability to save your company as much money as possible while completing this project in a timely manner. Each of these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lastly, option number three (Attachment 2), to wait five months and continue with software developments and then reevaluate the progress of the situation, resulted in the lowest EMV of $3.29 million. For the third alternative, I have made sure to consider your estimates of the favorable and unfavorable progress possibilities that could affect the situation in five months. For each of the calculated EMV s, I assumed that two months was the maximum amount of extra time needed if the software developments were not completed on time. Reputation Analysis: The EMV calculations previously discussed did not take into account the intangible cost of a damaged reputation in the event that the project is not completed on time. The costs cannot be certain because they have no concrete value but I have done my best to estimate the impact of a damaged reputation based on the EMV calculations stated above (Attachment 3). Continuing with your current software developments is immediately ruled out because the costs continue to go up and are the highest of the three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
