The Importance Of Ethical Business Is Not New
The importance of ethical business is not new. Every long term successful business has clearly
understood the need for ethical business practices. There are lessons to be learned, both positive and
negative, from businesses around the world. CEOs must work hard to find a balance between profits
and public image by learning from history, understanding the evolution of business ethics, and
understanding the social responsibility of businesses.
CEOs in the business world today are in a precarious position. They are accountable to shareholders to
keep profits high while avoiding any scandal or implication of shady dealings. CEOs are also
accountable to stakeholders to ensure business practices are acceptable for all parties. Stakeholders are
those that are required to keep an organization functioning, such as employees and customers. It is the
responsibility of top leadership to ensure the success or failure of the organization is not solely judged
by profit margins. Leadership must provide stakeholders with a road map for the organization.
Individual and organizational character is strengthened if the mission of an organization is clear, if
workers have maximum opportunity for growth, and if the larger social conditions allow corporations
to thrive without resorting to underhanded tactics (Terris, 2005). If an organization puts employees
and customers ahead of shareholders, the organization can be more successful in the long run.

L. Freeman s Case Study
/02/16 M. Bromfield contacted L. Freeman via email regarding upcoming court in which Georga was
required to attend. Molly stated that she would like for Georga to be brought to Salem, to DSS so that
everyone could walk down together for the court hearing at 3pm. She also wanted to meet prior and
discuss court. Molly also stressed to have Georga dressed appropriately to court with no jeans, flip
flops and no gum. L. Freeman then relayed this information to the Clines.
On 12/04/16 M. Rapp and L. Freeman met with D. Cline and Georga together. D. Cline gave
information on Georgas behavior in the home, he stated Georga was doing well and had adjusted
nicely. D. Cline also spoke about her interactions with the other children in the home and ... Show

Cline reported that Georga always was worried about her mother and that she took on too much of the
responsibility for her mother s actions. Georga was very upset to find out her mother lost their home,
was still drinking and using drugs. At this time Georga asked to no longer have contact with her
mother over the phone. M. Bromfield told Georga that she was allowed to make that decision and that
no one would force her to speak with her mother until she felt she was ready.
On 12/ 08/16 M. Bromfield emailed L. Freeman with the travel letter enclosed. This was need for the
Clines to take Georga on vacation out of state. M. Bromfield also was looking to schedule a VICAP.
L. Freeman replied after getting in touch with the Cline family to let M. Bromfield know that K. Cline
would be out of the country on that entire week. D. Cline would be able to attend over the phone.
On 12/12/16 L. Freeman contacted M. Bromfield to check on the details for Georgas Christmas event.
What time and where should she be. Since K. Cline was out of town I l. Freeman wanted to make sure
that D. Cline had has all the right information to get her there on time. M/ Bromfield responded with

How Did Calculus Contribute To The Development Of Europe
There was an unexpected explosion in the math and science world in the 17th century across Europe,
known as the Age of Reasoning. Scientists such as Galileo, Brahe and Kepler continued to increase
our knowledge on mathematics and science, especially the solar system which led to Kepler s laws of
planetary motion. Isaac Newton also discovered the laws of physics explaining Kepler s Laws, and
brought together the concepts now known as calculus. The invention of the logarithm by John Napier
contributed to the advances of science and astronomy and was one of the most significant
developments of this time. Rene Descartes development of analytical geometry and Cartesian
coordinates allowed the orbits of the planets to be plotted. Other mathematicians such as Fermat and
Pascal formulated theorems which extended our knowledge on number theory. Pascal is most famous
for his Pascal triangle even though similar figures had been done by the Chinese and Persian
mathematicians before him. Newton and Leibniz revolutionized mathematics by developing
infinitesimal calculus. Much more credit should be given to many other mathematicians at this time,
but as said before, this was a time of severe increase in mathematics and these are only a few of the
most important discoveries. (15) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This period, however, was dominated by Bernoulli. He was responsible for further developing Leibniz
s calculus as well as Pascal and Fermat s number theory. Leonhard Euler was another notable
mathematician of this time. He worked in all field of mathematics and was able to find links between
these different fields. He also proved multiple theorems and wrote many

What Are The Characteristics Of The Second Beast
The second beast And behold, another beast, a second one, resembling a bear. And it was raised up on
one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and thus they said to it, Arise, devour
much meat! Characteristics of the beast. Regarding the second beast, we should consider the
following: The beast resembled a bear that is it looked like a bear and it had the character of a bear. It
was raised up on one side. Three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth. It was commanded to arise
and devour much meat. A second one, resembling a bear That is, after the lion had disappeared. The
bear was a well known animal found in Media, a mountainous, cold and rough country, covered with
woods. Its character is very much different from the lion or any other animal for that matter. There
must have been a very good reason why the bear was chosen to represent the second kingdom the one
that would succeed the lion kingdom. Bochart[4] says the bear is distinguished mainly for two things,
that is its cunningness and its ferocity. Aristotle[5] said that the bear is a greedy, silly and foolhardy
animal. In Hosea 13:8 God said to Israel: I will encounter them like a bear robbed of her cubs, and I
will tear open their chests. Writers on the natures of beasts say that none is more savage than a she
bear, when bereaved of her whelps [Jerome].[6] Another example of the bear s character is found in 2
Sa. 17:8 You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged, like a bear
robbed of her cubs in the field. According to the great King Solomon, there is only one thing worse
than a bear Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs rather than a fool in his folly (Pro. 17:12). The
characteristics of the second kingdom, therefore, would be things such as ferocity, roughness,
fierceness in war, especially when provoked. One would expect to find that its actions would be less
noble than that of the first kingdom. It would be, in other words, more severe in its treatment of those
that would stand up against it. This kingdom would apply a mixture of brutality and savage cunning in
its dealings with other nations. And it was raised up on one side The

Bronchogenic Cysts Research Paper
INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts are formed due to abnormal budding of bronchial tree. They
are lined by respiratory epithelium. They are not air filled as they do not commonly communicate with
the bronchial tree. They are filled with fluid containing proteins, blood products and calcium oxalate.
One third are located in the lung parenchyma and two third are located in the mediastinum. 40 to 50%
of all congenital cysts in the thorax are bronchogenic cysts. On CT scans they appear as round mass
with attenuation similar to soft tissue or water.
Symptoms arise only when the cyst compresses surrounding structures. Most cysts are asymptomatic.

The age of the patient, non‑smoker status, absence of emphysema or abnormality suggesting a
previous tuberculosis insult lessens the possibility of a bulla. Cystic bronchiectasis is unlikely
considering the solitary nature, lower lobe location and lack of recurrent lung infections.
Treatment for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients is surgical resection. Surgical resection is
the treatment of choice in all patients including those who are asymptomatic considering the risk of
recurrent infections. If CCAM is detected antenatally or at birth, surgical resection is done between 1
and 6 months of age as the scope for compensatory lung growth after resection is much better in
infants compared to adults.
The standard therapy has been a posterolateral thoracotomy or median sternotomy with
intrapulmonary cysts requiring segmental or lobar resection.
Histopathological Examination in this patient revealed hyalinised collagen tissue devoid of any lining
epithelium except a localized area having squamous epithelium and syncytium with multiple nuclei.
The underlying lung parenchyma showed dilated bronchioles, normal alveolar spaces and focal

Frank Norris Research Paper
Frank Norris Late 19th Century Novelist and Writer in the Progressive Era After reading the works of
Frank Norris, one might wonder what drove him to become a writer. It could have been simply that as
a child he often dreamed of becoming a world renowned author, or it could have been that writing
helped him escape from the real world , and it was a comfort zone for him. Frank Norris grew up as
the world would see a normal child , but what he did in his career path was not the normal for the
average human being. He was a writer with a knowledgeable attitude and a dedicated personality that
enabled him to succeed in his early life, to produce many notable works, and to leave a long lasting
legacy. Benjamin Frank Norris Jr. was born on March 5th, 1870 in Chicago, Illinois(britannica.com),

Wealth Is The Strongest Determinant Of Health
Wealth is the strongest determinant of health in The United States of America as well as in other
thriving nations, however the relationship between wealth and health is on the rise in the United
States. A high socioeconomic, which is associated with wealth, is linked to a number of benefits that
are profoundly connected with health outcomes. These benefits include higher level education,
employment, environment, food, and health care. Although many of the factors contribute to health
status differences, access to health insurance and health care services could help to reduce disparities.
While lower family income generally means a lower probability of having employer based insurance,
African Americans were less likely to have job based insurance at all income levels compared to their
white counterparts for many years (UCLA, 2000), prior to Obama care. Even African Americans who
receive similar education to Whites, are more likely to live in poverty compared to a their white
counterparts Black patients compared to any other lower socioeconomic position are least likely to
receive medical services. In general, African Americans are deemed to have a poorer health status, in
comparison to their white counterparts, which is primarily attributable to poverty and deprived
communities. African Americans are more likely to consume unhealthy high caloric foods, due to the
fact that unhealthy foods are cheaper and easier to get than nutritious, low calorie foods (Blake, J

Iran-Contra Scandal Essay
The Iran contra scandal of the 1980 s, first brought to light in November 1986, is a complicated mess
of scandal, arms dealings, hostage deals, and illegal acts ( Iran Contra Affair Infoplease.com). The
original purpose of the arms sales was to improve United States Iran relations (Sanders SNU.edu).
However, when American hostages were taken throughout the 1980 s, members of President Reagan s
staff negotiated implicit deals with Iranian groups, which resulted in the U.S. selling arms in return for
the release of hostages (Wolf PBS.org). Later, the deal was modified so that the U.S. sold arms
directly to Iran at a high markup, with no guarantee of hostages being released, and the markup

hostages held in Lebanon by Iranian groups ( The Iran Contra Report Presidency.UCSB.edu). The
arms would be used to aid Iran in their ongoing war against Iraq ( The Iran Contra Report
Presidency.UCSB.edu). Robert McFarlane, a national security advisor who brought the suggestion to
President Reagan, believed that the deal would improve U.S. Iran relations, in addition to Lebanese
relations, thus giving the U.S. needed influence in the Middle East (Wolf PBS.org). However, several
advisors to Reagan questioned the legality of such an act, as both U.S. policy, prohibiting straight
arms for hostage swaps, and the embargo on arms to Iran, the Arms Export Control Act, condemned
that course of action. ( The Iran Contra Report Presidency.UCSB.edu). Though his advisors Caspar
Weinberger (Secretary of Defense) and George Shultz (Secretary of State) opposed the sales, President
Reagan listened to McFarlane (National Security Advisor) and William Casey (CIA director) and went
through with the plan, but Reagan never actually signed the plan or reported it to Congress, as
required by law ( The Iran Contra Report Presidency.UCSB.edu). Thus, Reagan could later claim that
he had no knowledge of the arms sales, as it was never formalized. Control of this operation was given

Compare And Differences Of Ancient Greece And The Roman...
Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire two civilizations that have so much in common but are yet so
vastly different. Both civilizations have seen their fair share of their empires rise and fall. Greece and
Roman today are both tourist places that we visit for the history they provide from hundreds of years
ago. Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire both seem to be founded and perspired due to some type
of water system helping them. Ancient Greece used the Mediterranean Seas new channels for trade.
Also, Greece used ships to help conquer nearby islands, which in return made them very vulnerable to
ground invasions. The Roman Empire was founded on the Tiber River for a trade post. Around 509 44
BCE Romans conquered and seemed to dominate the entire Mediterranean Sea basin. Both
civilizations found that the seas can help them conquer and control other civilizations. (Acrobatiq,
2017) Ancient Greece used a writing system call Linear B, which is short of similar to Linear A.
Linear B used syllabic signs, (composed of logograms, a base 10 number system, and short vertical
lines to separate words), to communicate messages a total of 87 in all. Originally this writing format
was thought to be influenced by the Minoans. Then a British linguist and cryptologist found that the
language was Indo European based, not Minoan who used the Linear A system instead. Ancient

Jung
Ellyn Joy V. Pasaporte Carl Jung Until the 1910s, Carl Jung was a follower and close friend of Freud
s. Like Freud, Jung believed that unconscious conflicts are important in shaping personality. However,
he believed the unconscious has two layers: the personal unconscious, which resembled Freud s idea,
and the collective unconscious, which contains universal memories of the common human past. Jung
called these common memories archetypes. Archetypes are images or thoughts that have the same
meaning for all human beings. Jung said that archetypes exist in dreams as well as in art, literature,
and religion across cultures. According to Jung, the ego represents the conscious mind while the
personal unconscious contains memories, including ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jung called this one of the irrationalfunctions, meaning that it involved perception rather than judging
of information. The second is thinking. Thinking means evaluating information or ideas rationally,
logically. Jung called this a rational function, meaning that it involves decision making or judging,
rather than simple intake of information. The third is intuiting. Intuiting is a kind of perception that
works outside of the usual conscious processes. It is irrational or perceptual, like sensing, but comes
from the complex integration of large amounts of information, rather than simple seeing or hearing.
Jung said it was like seeing around corners. The fourth is feeling. Feeling, like thinking, is a matter of
evaluating information, this time by weighing one s overall, emotional response. Jung calls it rational,
obviously not in the usual sense of the word. On the one hand, Jung is still attached to his Freudian
roots. He emphasizes the unconscious even more than Freudians do. In fact, he might be seen as the
logical extension of Freud s tendency to put the causes of things into the past. Freud, too, talked about
myths Oedipus, for example and how they impact on the modern psyche. On the other hand, Jung has
a lot in common with the neo Freudians, humanists, and existentialists. He believes that we are meant
to progress, to move in a positive direction, and not just to adapt, as the Freudians and behaviorists
would have it. His idea of

Figurative Language In The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall
Everyone has heard of seeing your life flash before your eyes in the moments before you die, however
for old Granny Weatherall, her life trickles by like an unsteady stream that meanders back and forth
from the past to the present. In The Jilting of Granny Weatherall , the author uses imagery, the
character s inner dialogue, and figurative language to show stream of consciousness and how the
character feels emotions such as bitterness, wistfulness, and a little bit of desperation. The imagery
presented helps show that Granny believes herself to be an independent, hard working woman. She
proudly describes everything she has done to make herself succeed in life, from the hard labor of
maintaining land, to nursing and losing very few of patients, to raising her children, all of which she
did without the help of a man. She also seems bitter over the impermanence of her actions, saying that

died when he was young. She accomplished a lot without him, and seems slightly bitter that she
cannot show him how well she did by herself. At some points in her inner dialogue, she becomes
confused as to what she is currently doing or who she is talking to, which also shows in the rambling,
stream of consciousness way of narration. In the last paragraph, she speaks to her children in her

Analysis Of The Book Fall Arrives
Fall arrives in the city with crisp winds that brush leaves from the ground into the air in a slow
churning whirlwind causing them to dance about, descending to the moist ground. A yellow cab is
patiently circling the neighborhood in search of fares, which has been a twenty year practice of Max a
stout, older man with a protruding belly that strains the buttons of his faded, much wrinkled shirt. He
slowly drinks a cup of lukewarm coffee and looks up at the dark, overcast sky, Looks like rain today
he says. Knowing the streets of the city better than anyone, Max prefers to work on the east side
around the old Elmhurst Cemetery. People don t venture close to the cemetery claiming that they often
see a young woman walking through it. Convinced she is a ghost looking for revenge, but this story
never bother Max nor has he ever seen this ghostly young woman.
Drops of rain begin to tap his windshield, but not enough for Max to engage his wipers. Until the rain
begins to violently pound his cab prompting him to slam on his brakes. The cab swerves, his coffee
spills on his chest and runs down his belly, Crap! he shouts in frustration. With his cab still swerving,
he comes close to hitting a young woman crossing the street near the cemetery just before he stops
short of hitting her left leg. He is shocked to see someone walking in such a violent storm, so he rolls

Analysis Of This Way For The Gas Ladies And Gentlemen
This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen by Tadeusz Borowski, published in 1959, is a short story
about a concentration camp prisoner s experience working on Canada, the group of inmates
responsible for helping unload the incoming prisoner transports. The narrator bares witness to many
atrocities throughout the story, which are made more impactful to the reader through Borowski s use
of impactful dialogue, figurative language, casual and matter of fact tone, and repetition. These
literary elements allow Borowski to draw the reader in more than he would otherwise, and make them
feel almost as if they are experiencing the horrors along with him. With few exceptions, every line of
dialogue in the passage starts on it s own new line. This, combined with a lack of says or said in most
cases, gives the dialogue a pointed and natural feeling. This has a couple of effects on the reader. First,
it allows the reader to be more invested in the characters and the narrative that is playing out. They are
able to feel closer to the action because of a lack of Henri said or I said getting in the way every line.
This helps with the flow of the story while it is being consumed. For example, Schade, too bad. Come,
come, Herr Posten, isn t my word good enough any more? Haven t we done business before? How
much? One hundred. Gemacht? Gemacht. (698) The dialogue above is casual and welcoming. In
context, when the reader is aware it is a conversation between two characters, it

The Process of Photosynthesis and Practicals
Introduction One of the most important bological processes on earth is photosynthesis. Plants that
comprise the majority of the food we consume need photosynthesis in order to produce life sustaining
energy. This energy is harnessed by the sun. If it were not for photosynthesis to capture and use this
vital energy, life itself would be minimal or almost non existent. Photosynthesis entails a process that
involves complex and fundamental actions that occur in plants, algae as well as some bacteria. They
use sunlight to produce carbohydrates. Oxygen is then created from carbon dioxide (CO2) and water
(Jackson, 2008). The carbohydrates created through photosynthesis enables growth and normal
functioning for the plant to sustain life. Here is an example of a formulation of photosynthesis by
Campbell et al. Light 6CO2 + 6H20 6 (CH2O) + 6O2 Chlorophyll (Campbell et al. 2009) Chloroplasts

and can be found within plant cells. The structure of chloroplasts are complex networks of sacs. These
are called thylakoids. Chlorophyll. located within the membranes of thylakoids, give color to plants
(Campbell et al. 2009). Cholrophyll is a key component in allowing most photosynthesis. Chlorophyll

Positive Behavior Intervention Plan ( Pbip )
The objective of this Positive Behavior Intervention Plan (PBIP) is to provide John the tools and
support necessary to replace the behavior in question and implement, the prevent, teach, and reinforce
strategies and recommendations. The desired outcome of this PTR plan is for John to substitute the
flicking behavior with the use of a squeezy ball and or personal schedule/chart.
For the prevent component of the behavioral intervention Environmental Supports and Increased Non

support John refrain from engaging in the socially unacceptable flicking behavior. In order to prevent
John from engaging in the flicking behavior, the teacher should equip John with a squeezy ball. The
teacher should chat with John upon his arrival and encourage him to utilize his squeezy ball.

replacement behavior. Teachers and staff should be encouraging, supportive, and implement the
prevent strategies when they are most likely to occur. In John s case this would be in the morning,
afternoon, and arrival. John should also be provided with an individual schedule and behavior chart.

Similarities Between Of Mice And Men And The Cask Of...
Robian Bonilla MLA? In the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and The Cask of Amontillado
by Edgar Allan Poe both Lennie and Fortunato are treated unfairly. Lennie is a big, careless, mentally
ill person, who everyone sees as a burden to their daily lives. In a similar way. Fortunato is looked
down upon by the protagonist, Montresor, because he thinks that Fortunato has imposed many injuries
on him. Both Lennie and Fortunato are born with problems that they cannot control. For example,
Lennie is born with a mental disability that affects his everyday life. Fortunato has an addiction to
alcohol which he can not control in his life that ultimately led to his death. In their pieces of literature,

Minimum Wage Pros And Cons Essay
Cons of the minimum wage: As discussed earlier, the minimum wage would ultimately increase
unemployment levels due to the labour getting costlier. This would not only threaten the current
workers, but would also affect the unemployed people looking for jobs. Securing a job would be more
challenging as employers would want to hire the best possible candidates who they deem worthy of
the minimum wage.
10 Another disadvantage of having a minimum wage is the Deadweight loss from Minimum Wage .

by abrupt retrograde memory loss that can last as short as a few hours to as long as years. Individuals
with this disorder block out specific information generally related to a traumatic or stressful event,
which in turn makes him or her unable to remember any relevant information. It is not to be confused
with general amnesia. The memories of the event are in the brain but the person is unable to access
them unless triggered by something. Causes This form of dissociative disorder is often related to times
of overwhelming stress, for example severe abuse, traumatic accidents/disaster or war. The complexity
of the condition is not fully understood, but many believe there is a genetic link due to the high
frequency of family members sharing episodes of the condition. Risk Factors More common in
women. Stressful life events or trauma. Family history. Genetics. Long term abuse. Signs Symptoms [

Physics, Love, and Richard Feynman Essay
Physics, Love, and Richard Feynman
Introduction
Physics. Love. These two words sum up the entities that Richard Feynman held most important
throughout his entire life. An extraordinary individual, Feynman was able to combine an incredible
mind with an incredible personality to achieve ends bordering on the magical. After Feynman s death
in 1988, physicist Hans Bethe, paraphrasing the mathematician Mark Kac, spoke of two kinds of
geniuses. He explained that the ordinary kind does great things but lets other scientists feel that they
could do the same if only they worked hard enough. The other kind performs magic. Bethe said, A
magician does things that nobody else could ever do and that seem completely unexpected...and that s

Before Richard Phillips Feynman was born on May 11, 1918, his father had proclaimed, If it s a boy,
he ll be a scientist (Mehra 1994, p. 2). He was right, although it is interesting to note that Feynman s
sister Joan, nine years his junior, also has a Ph.D. in physics (Feynman 1988). But while Melville
Feynman might have been wrong about predicting the careers of his children based on their sex, he
certainly prepared the young ones well for the scientific occupation. In an interview just before his
death, Feynman was asked if he could name a great influence in his life. He said, My father. Early in
my life, he d tell me about the world, about nature and how interesting it was (Brian 1995, p. 49). The
elder Feynman took his son on long walks in the woods, read to him from the Encyclopedia
Britannica, and encouraged him to conduct experiments with household materials. Throughout
elementary school, Feynman tinkered with toys, clocks, radios, and anything else he could secure for
his laboratory, a workspace in the corner of his bedroom. Besides influencing Feynman to think about
the wonders of science from a young age, Melville taught his son some non scientific lessons that
would greatly impact Feynman s views on certain issues. For example, Feynman learned from his
father to show indifference to authority, and to devalue honors and awards. Melville was in the
uniform business, and knew that there was no difference between a man with a uniform on and

Research Paper On The Roaring Twenties
The Roaring Twenties The Roaring Twenties were an age of exciting and new developments starting
from The Birth of Mass Culture, The New Women, Prohibition, The Culture Civil War, Jazz and Blue
Music and The Renaissance. This age was a time of change in multiple ways, many were more serious
than others. The 1920s were an age of dramatic and political change for instance. The 1920s brought
more of a conflict than celebration to the nation, and its wealth. For the first time in the nation s
history, more Americans lived in cities than farms ( History.com Staff, The Roaring Twenties) .
Although the U.S.A. did not enter the First World War until April 1917, the conflict cast a shadow
over American society that would take a while to pass. There was a brief economic recession at the
start of the 1920s, but as the decade moves on, the economy boomed and America began the age of
consumerism. However, for many Americans, the 1920s was a decade of poverty. More than 60 per
cent of Americans lived just below the poverty line. (BCC, The Roaring Twenties) . The U.S started
the 20th century as a country with enormous potential, and finished the century as the world s only
superpower. Yet there are two ways of looking at this powerful nation in the 1920s. Either as a wealthy
country with a high standard of living, big cars and large houses, or as a country with many people
living in poverty and some enduring terrible racism (BCC, The Roaring Twenties) . During the 1920s,
many Americans

Nineteen Reasons Why By Jay Asher
Suicide, a big concern in today s society. It is everywhere and happening every second, but no
ordinary person ever thinks of these situations on a daily basis. But one man, Jay Asher, stepped in
and decided to write about suicide in a more entertaining and relatable form. Thirteen Reasons Why,
written by Jay Asher, is a novel about a teenager that leaves tapes behind with recordings of her own
voice that explains why she took her own life. Jay Asher dropped out of college to pursue a writing
career, he had a total of eleven manuscripts submitted to publishers which ended up all being rejected.

I believe that banning this novel is a big disadvantage for younger audiences since they won t have the
chance to acquire some sort of knowledge of the topics that are considered to be censorable material.
Thirteen Reasons Why should not be banned since doing so doesn t only remove knowledge material
from younger audiences, but it also silences the authors, it prevents the authors to have a say and let
everyone know their thoughts and statements. Freedom of speech immediately brings up in mind the
First Amendment. The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech, meaning we are able to
express freely in any form of communication with no worries of getting in trouble. For example, we
have the right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances freely. There have been some
conflicts with the First Amendment and censoring materials. But problems with freedom of speech are
not as bad as other areas in the world One example is the so called right to be forgotten, which allows
negative information to be deleted from the Internet. Abrams stresses that even repugnant statements
are more broadly protected in the U.S. speech than under many European democracies. (Abrams, 66).
Protecting and taking care of the First Amendment should be done properly and constantly to keep
everyone sane. I believe that with the First Amendment everyone gets a chance to speak and tell their
own side of the argument

The Killer Cats Are Winning Analysis
Cats, are a common household in America and are known to outnumber dogs as pets. Natalie Angier
talks about this in her article The Killer Cats Are Winning! I think cats should be allowed to be
outdoors. Cats are playful animals, they are great pets, and I own one.
Natalie Angier, discusses that we spend a lot of money on cats; yet cats are wild at heart. Peter P.
Marra and Chris Santella authors of Cat Wars, view cats as cuddly killers. Cats are viewed as invasive
species as a contamination to the environment. Outdoor cats are a threat to wildlife as predators. Also
cats are a danger to human health from different types of illnesses. The Trap Neuter Return (TNR),
view cats as human alternative to euthanizing strays.

The man behind this was, David Lyall in 1894 he decided to bring along his female cat to the island.
Lyall was an amateur naturalist studying the biological bounty. Wasn t this guy smart enough not to
take the cat along? On the island there was flightless songbirds but they went extinct because of the
cats. The flightless songbird would have not been extinct today if David would have not gone with the
cat. Plus, those birds cannot fly so obviously they were going to die.
As this article continues to be bias. A research in 2015, showed proof that cat killed many animals. But
when asked by cat owners 98 percent did not car. Also they did not want the cats inside all of the time.
Plus, the research showed 60 percent did not think their cats were doing harm to the environment. This
is proving that people do not see harm from cats whether they are outside or to the environment.
I do not agree with this article because the entire thing is bias towards cats. There are more cat pets
over dogs. Cats should have the freedom to be outdoors, not get blamed for the destruction of the
environment and more studies should be done on how cats are worthy rather than the immoral

Use Of Speech By The Federal Government
The tests used by the federal government used to determine if certain types of speech can be censored
or banned are as follows. The clear and present danger test which is a test where the government can
restrict speech if there is evidence that the speech will cause a clear and present dangerous condition
to the public(Bardes Shelley, 2014, p.122). Direct incitement test protects the advocacy of illegal
action under the First Amendment unless imminent action is likely to happen. For Instance, it can
apply to the Supreme Court case Brandenburg v. Ohio when a KKK leader s conviction was
overturned (Bardes Shelley, 2014, p.123). Bad Tendency test is when speech has a tendency to induce
to induce illegal behavior (Notes). As defined in the Gitlow case when a left wing group was
convicted of publishing a pamphlet that urged a violent overthrow of U.S. government (Bardes
Shelley, 2014, p.123). The Test Defamation of character, or Libel is ruining an individual s good name
in which the law bans individuals from making false, defamatory statements about others this includes
slander (Bardes Shelley, 2014, p.124). I personally believe the press, entertainers and public have
been, and are within the right of the First Amendment right, freedom of speech. Some of the
information you hear in the media is not always beneficial for example, some new channels or people
side with groups that provide only what they want you to hear, and not always the full story.
Sometimes media is regulated,

Disorder and Misunderstanding The Crying of Lot 49
When reading Pynchon s The Crying of Lot 49 one is flooded with a deluge of historical references
(dates, places, events) and, unless a historical genius, probably feels confused as to the historical
accuracy of such references. As critics have shown, Pynchon blends factual history with fiction and
manages, as David Seed writes in The Fictional Labyrinths of Thomas Pynchon, to juxtapose(s)
historical references with reminders of the novel s status as artefact so that the reader s sense of
history and of fiction are brought into maximum confrontation (128). Pynchon, for example, in Lot 49
speaks at length about Maxwell s Demon, a machine proposed in 1871 by physicist ... Show more

At the beginning of the novel we learn that she has been given the job of sorting it (Pierce s estate) all
out (1) which she attempts to accomplish by shuffling back through a fat deckful of days (2). The
Demon sorts molecules and thus gains information about them, which in turns allows it to create order
among chaos. Oedipa, similarly, seeks to act as a dark machine in the center of the planetarium, to
bring the estate into pulsing stelliferous Meaning (64) (Mangel 90: 1971). The comparison couldn t be
more obvious; Oedipa as machine, sorting clues, gaining information, discovering patterns and order
and, ultimately, a Meaning.
This metaphoric parallel becomes weak, however, when we realize that as Oedipa probes deeper into
the issues, other revelations...seemed to come crowding in exponentially, as if the more she collected
the more would come to her, (64). Oedipa becomes unable to accurately mimic Maxwell s Demon; she
simply cannot sort through all of the clues, nor can she place the truthful ones on one side and the
false ones on the other. This inability stems not only from the copious amount of information she
receives but the ultimately unknowable (and, as we shall see, distorted) nature of such clues; Oedipa
can never truly know if a clue is true or false. Nonetheless, the other side of Maxwell s Demon, the
side Pynchon chooses not to explicitly elaborate,

Abstract This paper presents an efficient and reliable evolutionary based approach to solve the optimal
power flow(OPF) problem. The proposed approach employs differential evolution algorithm for
optimal settings of control variables. The proposed approach is examined and tested on the standard
IEEE 30 bus test system with fuel cost minimization as objective. The proposed approach results are
compared with the results reported in the literature. The results show the effectiveness and robustness
of the proposed approach.

I. INTRODUCTION
In the past two decades, the problem of optimal power flow (OPF) has received much attention. It is
of current interest of many utilities and it has been marked as one of the most operational needs. The
OPF problem solution aims to optimize a selected objective function via optimal adjustment of the
power system control variables, while at the same time satisfying various equality and inequality
constraints.

The flashy advertisements broadcast in television generate impulse shopping in children. Children,
after watching the glitter of commercials, often lose the ability to live a life without materialistic joy.
The kids usually get more attracted towards the costly branded products, such as jeans and
accessories. They disregard the inexpensive, but useful, ones that are not shown in the commercials.
Advertisements have an indirect effect on the behavior of children. They might develop temper
tantrums, when deprived of the latest toys and clothes that are shown in the commercials. The
personal preferences in clothing, toys, food and luxurious of children are altered by the
advertisements, to a great extent. Junk foods, such as pizzas, burgers and soft drinks, are heavily
promoted during children s TV viewing time. This develops a craving for fatty, sugary and fast foods
in kids, thereby affecting their health adversely. BELOW ARE FINDINGS FROM SOME OF THE
MORE RELIABLE STUDIES. In last 20 years impact of TV advertisements on children memory and
behavior is the major topic of debates in countries open for market competition (Boddewyn, 1984).Till
1988 advertising expense of TV program raised up to $500 million approximately (Leccese, 1989).
While looking at the children responses to TV advertisement a research experiment revealed that
children s food choices especially in snacks are based on their exposure to TV commercials (Gorn and

The Use Of Bacteri Lactobacillus And Bifidobacterium Essay
For every eukaryotic cell in the human body, scientists estimate that there are about ten prokaryotic
cells present, which means that more than half of what makes up the human body is 30 40 trillion
bacteria and archaea. Recent research suggests that this diverse microbiota is both directly and
indirectly responsible for human mental and physical health. As the human body develops, so does the
microbe flora. Lactobacillus acidophilus (L acidophilus), L. fermentum, L. plantarum, and L. rhanosus
are just some of the dangerous sounding bacteria that are not just beneficial but essential to proper
human health. All of these helpful strains of bacteria are given the common name of probiotics.
Scientists are just now beginning to understand the immense effect of the gut bacteria in human
everyday lives and they, very well, may find that through manipulation of probiotics, any disease
could potentially be inhibited/cured.
There are two major groups of probiotic bacteria: Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Lactobacillus, a
rod shaped, gram positive bacterium, is the most popular probiotic used and can be found in fermented
foods, like kimchi, and yogurt. Bifidobacterium, a gram positive, non motile bacterium, is the other
probiotic choice approved for common usage. More and more bacteria are being added to the list of
potential probiotics. The benefits of probiotics range from prevention/remission of infectious diarrhea,
antibiotic associated diarrhea, crohn s disease, hepatic

Contributions Of Jane Adddams
Jane Addams was considered the first woman to be a public philosopher and won worldwide
recognition for her movement as a pioneer social worker in America, a feminist, and as an
internationalist. Additionally, Jane Addams was born September 6, 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois; she
was the eighth children of nine. Growing up, Addams was not physically healthy throughout her
youth, she suffered from spinal difficulty, but was later in time it was remedied by a surgery. In
addition, it can be said that Addams lived a privileged life, her father had various important
relationships, some even included President Abraham Lincoln. According to the Stanford
Encyclopedia, Addams was in the minority among her peers in philosophy or feminism to believe that
working class immigrant women not only should be given a voice but also had something important to
contribute to the community of ideas (Hamington, 828). Moreover, Jane Addams was undecided on
what life path she will choose. Consequently, Addams attended and graduated from Rockford Female
Seminary in Illinois in 1881 and attended medical school. At the age of twenty seven, Addams and her
close friend Ellen G. Starr visited a settlement house, Toynbee Hall, in London. This visit helped to
finalize Jane s idea of helping the poor area of Chicago. Specifically, her path was settled as indicated,
On one trip with friend Ellen Gates Starr, the 27 year old Addams visited the famed Toynbee Hall in

  • 2. The Importance Of Ethical Business Is Not New The importance of ethical business is not new. Every long term successful business has clearly understood the need for ethical business practices. There are lessons to be learned, both positive and negative, from businesses around the world. CEOs must work hard to find a balance between profits and public image by learning from history, understanding the evolution of business ethics, and understanding the social responsibility of businesses. CEOs in the business world today are in a precarious position. They are accountable to shareholders to keep profits high while avoiding any scandal or implication of shady dealings. CEOs are also accountable to stakeholders to ensure business practices are acceptable for all parties. Stakeholders are those that are required to keep an organization functioning, such as employees and customers. It is the responsibility of top leadership to ensure the success or failure of the organization is not solely judged by profit margins. Leadership must provide stakeholders with a road map for the organization. Individual and organizational character is strengthened if the mission of an organization is clear, if workers have maximum opportunity for growth, and if the larger social conditions allow corporations to thrive without resorting to underhanded tactics (Terris, 2005). If an organization puts employees and customers ahead of shareholders, the organization can be more successful in the long run. Employees that feel wanted and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. L. Freeman s Case Study /02/16 M. Bromfield contacted L. Freeman via email regarding upcoming court in which Georga was required to attend. Molly stated that she would like for Georga to be brought to Salem, to DSS so that everyone could walk down together for the court hearing at 3pm. She also wanted to meet prior and discuss court. Molly also stressed to have Georga dressed appropriately to court with no jeans, flip flops and no gum. L. Freeman then relayed this information to the Clines. On 12/04/16 M. Rapp and L. Freeman met with D. Cline and Georga together. D. Cline gave information on Georgas behavior in the home, he stated Georga was doing well and had adjusted nicely. D. Georga was very upset to find out her mother lost their home, was still drinking and using drugs. At this time Georga asked to no longer have contact with her mother over the phone. M. Bromfield told Georga that she was allowed to make that decision and that no one would force her to speak with her mother until she felt she was ready. On 12/ 08/16 M. Bromfield emailed L. Freeman with the travel letter enclosed. This was need for the Clines to take Georga on vacation out of state. M. Bromfield also was looking to schedule a VICAP. L. Freeman replied after getting in touch with the Cline family to let M. Bromfield know that K. Cline would be out of the country on that entire week. D. Cline would be able to attend over the phone. • 4. How Did Calculus Contribute To The Development Of Europe There was an unexpected explosion in the math and science world in the 17th century across Europe, known as the Age of Reasoning. Scientists such as Galileo, Brahe and Kepler continued to increase our knowledge on mathematics and science, especially the solar system which led to Kepler s laws of planetary motion. Isaac Newton also discovered the laws of physics explaining Kepler s Laws, and brought together the concepts now known as calculus. The invention of the logarithm by John Napier contributed to the advances of science and astronomy and was one of the most significant developments of this time. Rene Descartes development of analytical geometry and Cartesian coordinates allowed the orbits of the planets to be plotted. Other mathematicians such as Fermat and Pascal formulated theorems which extended our knowledge on number theory. Pascal is most famous for his Pascal triangle even though similar figures had been done by the Chinese and Persian mathematicians before him. Newton and Leibniz revolutionized mathematics by developing infinitesimal calculus. Much more credit should be given to many other mathematicians at this time, but as said before, this was a time of severe increase in mathematics and these are only a few of the most important discoveries. (15) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This period, however, was dominated by Bernoulli. He was responsible for further developing Leibniz s calculus as well as Pascal and Fermat s number theory. Leonhard Euler was another notable mathematician of this time. • 5. What Are The Characteristics Of The Second Beast The second beast And behold, another beast, a second one, resembling a bear. And it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and thus they said to it, Arise, devour much meat! Characteristics of the beast. Regarding the second beast, we should consider the following: The beast resembled a bear that is it looked like a bear and it had the character of a bear. It was raised up on one side. Three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth. It was commanded to arise and devour much meat. A second one, resembling a bear That is, after the lion had disappeared. The bear was a well known animal found in Media, a mountainous, cold and rough country, covered with woods. Its character is very much different from the lion or any other animal for that matter. There must have been a very good reason why the bear was chosen to represent the second kingdom the one that would succeed the lion kingdom. Bochart[4] says the bear is distinguished mainly for two things, that is its cunningness and its ferocity. Aristotle[5] said that the bear is a greedy, silly and foolhardy animal. In Hosea 13:8 God said to Israel: I will encounter them like a bear robbed of her cubs, and I will tear open their chests. Writers on the natures of beasts say that none is more savage than a she bear, when bereaved of her whelps [Jerome].[6] Another example of the bear s character is found in 2 Sa. 17:8 You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. According to the great King Solomon, there is only one thing worse than a bear Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs rather than a fool in his folly (Pro. 17:12). The characteristics of the second kingdom, therefore, would be things such as ferocity, roughness, fierceness in war, especially when provoked. One would expect to find that its actions would be less noble than that of the first kingdom. It would be, in other words, more severe in its treatment of those that would stand up against it. This kingdom would apply a mixture of brutality and savage cunning in its dealings with other nations. And it was raised up on one side The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Bronchogenic Cysts Research Paper INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts are formed due to abnormal budding of bronchial tree. They are lined by respiratory epithelium. They are not air filled as they do not commonly communicate with the bronchial tree. They are filled with fluid containing proteins, blood products and calcium oxalate. One third are located in the lung parenchyma and two third are located in the mediastinum. 40 to 50% of all congenital cysts in the thorax are bronchogenic cysts. On CT scans they appear as round mass with attenuation similar to soft tissue or water. Symptoms arise only when the cyst compresses surrounding structures. Most cysts are asymptomatic. The age of the patient, non‑smoker status, absence of emphysema or abnormality suggesting a previous tuberculosis insult lessens the possibility of a bulla. Cystic bronchiectasis is unlikely considering the solitary nature, lower lobe location and lack of recurrent lung infections. Treatment for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients is surgical resection. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice in all patients including those who are asymptomatic considering the risk of recurrent infections. If CCAM is detected antenatally or at birth, surgical resection is done between 1 and 6 months of age as the scope for compensatory lung growth after resection is much better in infants compared to adults. The standard therapy has been a posterolateral thoracotomy or median sternotomy with intrapulmonary cysts requiring segmental or lobar resection. Histopathological Examination in this patient revealed hyalinised collagen tissue devoid of any lining epithelium except a localized area having squamous epithelium and syncytium with multiple nuclei. Frank Norris Research Paper Frank Norris Late 19th Century Novelist and Writer in the Progressive Era After reading the works of Frank Norris, one might wonder what drove him to become a writer. It could have been simply that as a child he often dreamed of becoming a world renowned author, or it could have been that writing helped him escape from the real world , and it was a comfort zone for him. • 8. Wealth Is The Strongest Determinant Of Health Wealth is the strongest determinant of health in The United States of America as well as in other thriving nations, however the relationship between wealth and health is on the rise in the United States. A high socioeconomic, which is associated with wealth, is linked to a number of benefits that are profoundly connected with health outcomes. These benefits include higher level education, employment, environment, food, and health care. Although many of the factors contribute to health status differences, access to health insurance and health care services could help to reduce disparities. While lower family income generally means a lower probability of having employer based insurance, African Americans were less likely to have job based insurance at all income levels compared to their white counterparts for many years (UCLA, 2000), prior to Obama care. Even African Americans who receive similar education to Whites, are more likely to live in poverty compared to a their white counterparts Black patients compared to any other lower socioeconomic position are least likely to receive medical services. In general, African Americans are deemed to have a poorer health status, in comparison to their white counterparts, which is primarily attributable to poverty and deprived communities. African Americans are more likely to consume unhealthy high caloric foods, due to the fact that unhealthy foods are cheaper and easier to get than nutritious, low calorie foods (Blake, J Mundoz, ... • 9. Iran-Contra Scandal Essay The Iran contra scandal of the 1980 s, first brought to light in November 1986, is a complicated mess of scandal, arms dealings, hostage deals, and illegal acts ( Iran Contra Affair Infoplease.com). The original purpose of the arms sales was to improve United States Iran relations (Sanders SNU.edu). However, when American hostages were taken throughout the 1980 s, members of President Reagan s staff negotiated implicit deals with Iranian groups, which resulted in the U.S. selling arms in return for the release of hostages (Wolf PBS.org). Later, the deal was modified so that the U.S. sold arms directly to Iran at a high markup, with no guarantee of hostages being released, and the markup funding the contras in Nicaragua ( The ... The arms would be used to aid Iran in their ongoing war against Iraq ( The Iran Contra Report Presidency.UCSB.edu). Robert McFarlane, a national security advisor who brought the suggestion to President Reagan, believed that the deal would improve U.S. Iran relations, in addition to Lebanese relations, thus giving the U.S. needed influence in the Middle East (Wolf PBS.org). However, several advisors to Reagan questioned the legality of such an act, as both U.S. policy, prohibiting straight arms for hostage swaps, and the embargo on arms to Iran, the Arms Export Control Act, condemned that course of action. ( The Iran Contra Report Presidency.UCSB.edu). Though his advisors Caspar Weinberger (Secretary of Defense) and George Shultz (Secretary of State) opposed the sales, President Reagan listened to McFarlane (National Security Advisor) and William Casey (CIA director) and went through with the plan, but Reagan never actually signed the plan or reported it to Congress, as required by law ( The Iran Contra Report Presidency.UCSB.edu). Thus, Reagan could later claim that he had no knowledge of the arms sales, as it was never formalized. • 10. Compare And Differences Of Ancient Greece And The Roman... Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire two civilizations that have so much in common but are yet so vastly different. Both civilizations have seen their fair share of their empires rise and fall. Greece and Roman today are both tourist places that we visit for the history they provide from hundreds of years ago. Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire both seem to be founded and perspired due to some type of water system helping them. Ancient Greece used the Mediterranean Seas new channels for trade. Also, Greece used ships to help conquer nearby islands, which in return made them very vulnerable to ground invasions. The Roman Empire was founded on the Tiber River for a trade post. Around 509 44 BCE Romans conquered and seemed to dominate the entire Mediterranean Sea basin. Both civilizations found that the seas can help them conquer and control other civilizations. (Acrobatiq, 2017) Ancient Greece used a writing system call Linear B, which is short of similar to Linear A. Linear B used syllabic signs, (composed of logograms, a base 10 number system, and short vertical lines to separate words), to communicate messages a total of 87 in all. Originally this writing format was thought to be influenced by the Minoans. Then a British linguist and cryptologist found that the language was Indo European based, not Minoan who used the Linear A system instead. • 13. Jung Ellyn Joy V. Pasaporte Carl Jung Until the 1910s, Carl Jung was a follower and close friend of Freud s. Like Freud, Jung believed that unconscious conflicts are important in shaping personality. However, he believed the unconscious has two layers: the personal unconscious, which resembled Freud s idea, and the collective unconscious, which contains universal memories of the common human past. Jung called these common memories archetypes. Archetypes are images or thoughts that have the same meaning for all human beings. Jung said that archetypes exist in dreams as well as in art, literature, and religion across cultures. According to Jung, the ego represents the conscious mind while the personal unconscious contains memories, including ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thinking means evaluating information or ideas rationally, logically. Jung called this a rational function, meaning that it involves decision making or judging, rather than simple intake of information. The third is intuiting. Intuiting is a kind of perception that works outside of the usual conscious processes. It is irrational or perceptual, like sensing, but comes from the complex integration of large amounts of information, rather than simple seeing or hearing. Jung said it was like seeing around corners. The fourth is feeling. Feeling, like thinking, is a matter of evaluating information, this time by weighing one s overall, emotional response. Jung calls it rational, obviously not in the usual sense of the word. On the one hand, Jung is still attached to his Freudian roots. He emphasizes the unconscious even more than Freudians do. In fact, he might be seen as the logical extension of Freud s tendency to put the causes of things into the past. Freud, too, talked about myths Oedipus, for example and how they impact on the modern psyche. On the other hand, Jung has a lot in common with the neo Freudians, humanists, and existentialists. He believes that we are meant to progress, to move in a positive direction, and not just to adapt, as the Freudians and behaviorists would have it. His idea of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Figurative Language In The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall Everyone has heard of seeing your life flash before your eyes in the moments before you die, however for old Granny Weatherall, her life trickles by like an unsteady stream that meanders back and forth from the past to the present. In The Jilting of Granny Weatherall , the author uses imagery, the character s inner dialogue, and figurative language to show stream of consciousness and how the character feels emotions such as bitterness, wistfulness, and a little bit of desperation. The imagery presented helps show that Granny believes herself to be an independent, hard working woman. She proudly describes everything she has done to make herself succeed in life, from the hard labor of maintaining land, to nursing and losing very few of patients, to raising her children, all of which she did without the help of a man. She accomplished a lot without him, and seems slightly bitter that she cannot show him how well she did by herself. At some points in her inner dialogue, she becomes confused as to what she is currently doing or who she is talking to, which also shows in the rambling, stream of consciousness way of narration. In the last paragraph, she speaks to her children in her mind, telling them to make sure none of the fruit they grow is wasted. He slowly drinks a cup of lukewarm coffee and looks up at the dark, overcast sky, Looks like rain today he says. • 16. Analysis Of This Way For The Gas Ladies And Gentlemen This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen by Tadeusz Borowski, published in 1959, is a short story about a concentration camp prisoner s experience working on Canada, the group of inmates responsible for helping unload the incoming prisoner transports. The narrator bares witness to many atrocities throughout the story, which are made more impactful to the reader through Borowski s use of impactful dialogue, figurative language, casual and matter of fact tone, and repetition. These literary elements allow Borowski to draw the reader in more than he would otherwise, and make them feel almost as if they are experiencing the horrors along with him. With few exceptions, every line of dialogue in the passage starts on it s own new line. This, combined with a lack of says or said in most cases, gives the dialogue a pointed and natural feeling. This has a couple of effects on the reader. First, it allows the reader to be more invested in the characters and the narrative that is playing out. They are able to feel closer to the action because of a lack of Henri said or I said getting in the way every line. This helps with the flow of the story while it is being consumed. For example, Schade, too bad. Come, come, Herr Posten, isn t my word good enough any more? Haven t we done business before? How much? One hundred. Gemacht? Gemacht. • 17. The Process of Photosynthesis and Practicals Introduction One of the most important bological processes on earth is photosynthesis. Plants that comprise the majority of the food we consume need photosynthesis in order to produce life sustaining energy. This energy is harnessed by the sun. If it were not for photosynthesis to capture and use this vital energy, life itself would be minimal or almost non existent. Photosynthesis entails a process that involves complex and fundamental actions that occur in plants, algae as well as some bacteria. They use sunlight to produce carbohydrates. Oxygen is then created from carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (Jackson, 2008). The carbohydrates created through photosynthesis enables growth and normal functioning for the plant to sustain life. Here is an example of a formulation of photosynthesis by Campbell et al. Light 6CO2 + 6H20 6 (CH2O) + 6O2 Chlorophyll (Campbell et al. 2009) Chloroplasts are the main place for photosynthesis to occur in plants occurs. Chloroplasts are important organelles, and can be found within plant cells. The structure of chloroplasts are complex networks of sacs. These are called thylakoids. This age was a time of change in multiple ways, many were more serious than others. The 1920s were an age of dramatic and political change for instance. The 1920s brought more of a conflict than celebration to the nation, and its wealth. For the first time in the nation s history, more Americans lived in cities than farms ( History.com Staff, The Roaring Twenties) . Although the U.S.A. did not enter the First World War until April 1917, the conflict cast a shadow over American society that would take a while to pass. There was a brief economic recession at the start of the 1920s, but as the decade moves on, the economy boomed and America began the age of consumerism. However, for many Americans, the 1920s was a decade of poverty. More than 60 per cent of Americans lived just below the poverty line. (BCC, The Roaring Twenties) . The U.S started the 20th century as a country with enormous potential, and finished the century as the world s only superpower. Yet there are two ways of looking at this powerful nation in the 1920s. Oedipa, similarly, seeks to act as a dark machine in the center of the planetarium, to bring the estate into pulsing stelliferous Meaning (64) (Mangel 90: 1971). The comparison couldn t be more obvious; Oedipa as machine, sorting clues, gaining information, discovering patterns and order and, ultimately, a Meaning. This metaphoric parallel becomes weak, however, when we realize that as Oedipa probes deeper into the issues, other revelations...seemed to come crowding in exponentially, as if the more she collected the more would come to her, (64). Oedipa becomes unable to accurately mimic Maxwell s Demon; she simply cannot sort through all of the clues, nor can she place the truthful ones on one side and the false ones on the other. This inability stems not only from the copious amount of information she receives but the ultimately unknowable (and, as we shall see, distorted) nature of such clues; Oedipa can never truly know if a clue is true or false.
