This document summarizes a talk about the invasive spotted wing drosophila (SWD) fly and its damage to soft fruits. It describes the fly's features, global spread since the 1930s, and ability to cause 30-80% crop losses. Trapping methods are outlined for citizens to monitor local SWD populations using vinegar traps. A past citizen science project through the Quekett Microscopical Club found regional variation in SWD catches across the UK, demonstrating the value of public participation in monitoring. The talk encourages further engagement, especially from schools, to gather more data and involve more regions in tracking this pest over time.
