Lygus Bug
 Lygus lineolaris
 “Tarnish Plant Bug”
 Feed on over 385 crop and weed plants
 Chalky spots in Peas
 Generalist
 Native to North America
Lygus Bug
 Adult
 ¼“ long and 1/8” wide
 Pale green- reddish-brown
 Triangle/v mark
 Legs and antennae long
Lygus Bug
 Identification
 Pea Aphid vs Lygus bug
Lygus Bug
 Survive winter as adult in
ground litter, crop
residues, and buildings
May June July August September
Overwintering
adults become
active, feed, lay
eggs
Nymphs feed,
new adults
emerge
New adults mate,
feed, lay eggs,
nymphs feed
Nymphs feed,
new adults
emerge
Adults begin
to overwinter
Lygus Bug Lifecycle
 Multiple Generations dependent on
environment
 Overwintered adults emerge mid-April to late
May and feed on host weeds
 1st generation adults: mid-June to July leave
host weeds, dispersing into neighboring crops
 2nd generation adults: emerge late August
and September potentially cause economic
damage
Lygus Bug
 Have 1-3 generations
 Early Spring and Late Fall
 redroot pigweed, stinkweed, wild
mustard/flixweed, kochia, hoary cress, russian
knapweed, russian thistle, red clover, dandelion,
and lamb’s-quarters
 Watch out for volunteer!
 Flax, wheat, canola, lentils, sunflowers, beans,
buckwheat, and strawberries
Lygus Bug Scouting
 Begin monitoring when plants start to
flower to pod ripening stages
 Lower precip, lower threshold
 PNW threshold 10 lygus bugs per 25
sweeps
 Can be counted at edge if biomass is
consistent with field or to thick to walk
through (similar crop stage)
Lygus Bug Scouting
 Sweep Net
 15”
 Sailcloth vs muslim
 Paper bag
Chalk Damage
 White spot may appear on cotyledon of
some legumes
 Apperance, grade, marketability
Lygus Bug Damage
 Nymph and adult
 Piercing-sucking mouthpart
 Puncture pod and seed coats
 Inject toxic substance in plant parts
 Leaves pit or crater like depression
 With or without chalky appearance
Chalk Damage
 Rough harvesting or handling
 High moisture levels
 Moisture Level?
Lygus Bug Control
 Early Weed Control
 Timing: during bloom stage early morning
or late evening to minimize bee kill
 Biocontrol: parasitic wasps
 Chemical Control
 Zeta-cypermethrin
 Chlorpyrifos
 Carbaryl
Lygus Bug Reports
 North Dakota: 1996, 2002
 Manitoba, 20% decrease in yields from
damage between flowering and pod
maturity (canola)
 Reports in Canola in Sunburst
Extension
 Farm Bill due March 31st
 Looking for some test plots for pea fields:
 Phosphorus response
 Pea Leaf Weevil
 Confirm Lygus bug species
 NARC 100 year anniversary July 1st
