1. WHICH MUSICAL SUB-GENRE?
For my music magazine, I have chosen the sub-genre Pop-rock and I am hoping to
associate it with a girl band. In order to follow the codes and conventions of a Pop-rock
magazine, it is important I research into a specific magazine that links in some way to
my chosen sub-genre, such as ‘Billboard’. Although this magazine includes content
about the music industry in general, often its features, such as the artist interviews are
Pop/Soft-rock musicians. ‘Billboard’ began as a weekly for the billposting and advertising
business, since then ‘Billboard’ and its popular music charts have evolved into the
primary source of information on trends and innovation in music, reaching a wider
audience. The publishers of this magazine are ‘Prometheus Global Media’ – a recent
subsidiary company which was founded in 2009, which is only assocviated with three
magazines, including: Back Stage, Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter. This company
engages consumers and marketers at the centre of the culture’s most prominent forces:
Music, Media and Entertainment. These direct links demonstrates the company’s ability
to influence a popular culture. The company is owned by Guggenheim Partners, which
is a global investment and advisory financial services firm that engages in investment
banking, capital markets services, investment management and investment advisory.
