My Media Analysis

Billboard magazine 
 Billboard is an American music magazine. It was first 
published November 1st 1984. The magazine originally 
focused on bill posting and outdoor amusements before 
specializing in the music industry in the 1960s. 
 Billboard maintains several internationally 
recognized record charts, which track the most popular 
songs and albums across several categories on a 
weekly basis. 
 Its primary charts, the Billboard Hot 100 and 
the Billboard 200, respectively rank the top songs and 
albums regardless of genre. 
 Billboard has a total circulation of 16,327 and the 
magazine is produced weekly. 
 Billboard is intended for music professionals, such 
as record label executives, artists, music retailers, and 
radio DJs.

Media 
 Billboard is owned by Prometheus Global 
Media. 
 Prometheus Global Media is New York City-based 
media company. The company was 
formed in December 2009 by the sale of the 
entertainment and media division of Nielsen 
Company. 
 The company owns and operates a number of 
major entertainment industry trade 
publications, including Adweek, Back Stage, 
Billboard, Film Journal International, and The 
Hollywood Reporter.
Audience 
 The target audience for Billboard magazine 
varies from young teens, from the age of 16, 
to young adults, at the age of 26. This is 
because the magazine provides its readers 
with the latest updates from the charts, but of 
different and various types of genres. 
 This is to widen the range of the target 
audience. 
 The layout of the magazine is very mature 
and not overcrowded with images of teen 
bands and other artists. 
 It doesn’t advertise news and gossip of the 
artist’s lives but only conveys the weekly 
update of the music charts.
Genre/themes 
 Billboard doesn't have one specific 
genre as it varies depending on what 
is in the charts at the current time. 
 The front cover of the magazine is 
very mature and only has a single 
artist or group. There is a plain colour 
for the background and a very limited 
amount of text so that it doesn't look 
too busy.
Representation 
 Billboard music magazine is an influential 
music-media publication broad spread 
across the industry. It focuses sufficiently on 
notifying the target audiences’/readers into 
the latest informative music-media 
updates/pathways to have been created. 
‘Billboard’ represents this through its wide 
range of communications such as radio, TV, 
magazines, websites and other 
communication technologies.

  • 2. Billboard magazine  Billboard is an American music magazine. It was first published November 1st 1984. The magazine originally focused on bill posting and outdoor amusements before specializing in the music industry in the 1960s.  Billboard maintains several internationally recognized record charts, which track the most popular songs and albums across several categories on a weekly basis.  Its primary charts, the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard 200, respectively rank the top songs and albums regardless of genre.  Billboard has a total circulation of 16,327 and the magazine is produced weekly.  Billboard is intended for music professionals, such as record label executives, artists, music retailers, and radio DJs.
  • 3. Institution: Prometheus Global Media  Billboard is owned by Prometheus Global Media.  Prometheus Global Media is New York City-based media company. The company was formed in December 2009 by the sale of the entertainment and media division of Nielsen Company.  The company owns and operates a number of major entertainment industry trade publications, including Adweek, Back Stage, Billboard, Film Journal International, and The Hollywood Reporter.
  • 4. Audience  The target audience for Billboard magazine varies from young teens, from the age of 16, to young adults, at the age of 26. This is because the magazine provides its readers with the latest updates from the charts, but of different and various types of genres.  This is to widen the range of the target audience.  The layout of the magazine is very mature and not overcrowded with images of teen bands and other artists.  It doesn’t advertise news and gossip of the artist’s lives but only conveys the weekly update of the music charts.

Genre/themes  Billboard doesn't have one specific genre as it varies depending on what is in the charts at the current time.  The front cover of the magazine is very mature and only has a single artist or group. There is a plain colour for the background and a very limited amount of text so that it doesn't look too busy.
  • 6. Representation  Billboard music magazine is an influential music-media publication broad spread across the industry. It focuses sufficiently on notifying the target audiences’/readers into the latest informative music-media updates/pathways to have been created. ‘Billboard’ represents this through its wide range of communications such as radio, TV, magazines, websites and other communication technologies.
