Analysis Of `` Fences `` By August Wilson
A family by definition is any group of individuals living together under a common roof. However,
it does happen that sometimes a certain member of the family decides to forget what it means to
be part of a family. August Wilson s Fences portrays extremely well what happens when a member
of the family decides to forget his or her duties. The use of metaphors and symbols throughout the
playsuch as baseball and fences, illustrate exactly why Troy Maxson as a family man was destined
for disappointment. Rose, Troy s wife in the playwas the obvious voice of reason between the two;
all she wanted was an interrupted happy family life. The fences that she put up were not
physical fences but rather emotional and psychological ones used to keep her family in line.
These fences were made very clear to both the reader and the other characters in the play. For
example when Bono (Troy s best friend) is questioning Troy s commitment to Rose he said,
Some people build fences to keep people out... and others build fences to keep people in. Rose
wants to hold on to you all. She loves you. (898). This excerpt perfectly described the different
values shared between Rose and Troy but is also a common generalization of gender roles in most
family. The only fence Rose ever set up for Troy was one of loyalty and commitment. She believed
in the strength in numbers whilst Troy strongly believed in the power of individuality. Troy on the
other hand had a completely different approach when it

Ferrari Research Paper
To begin with, in Italy in 1929 there was a car model created by the italians which was called the
ВЁFerrariВЁ and was created for men to race their cars back then on the track. In addition, in
Germany in 1931 the ВЁPorscheВЁ model was created germans for the purpose of racing on the
track also but was created by a man named Ferdinand Porsche which loved cars as a kid and grew
up working on volkswagens which lead to his idea of the porsche. So, they were both created for
racing purposes but the history of the men who made them is not similar because they lived in
different countries with different cultures and ideas.
To continue, the mileage of both models are good but are very different from each other. The

However, since the Porsche is listed and priced at a lower price it s faster to build but still takes
a week for the assembly line to make and then a few days to paint. After, they then have to ship
the car to whomever is buying it across seas or not which could take up to weeks depending on
where you live. Unlike the Porsche, the Ferrari takes 3 weeks to a month to build and create
because of the high suspenseful details, parts, and performance put into this sports car. Then, not
only may it take a month to create but according to 2015s Ferraris Website, the waiting list for a
Ferrari is 2 years long and now days may be longer basically means that if you even had enough
money to purchase one you would have to wait for yours to be built in shipped to you and that
would take years. So there are many pros and cons for the two models but the next characteristic is
what will make you decide what model is meant for

Lester Burnham Essay
The Psychological Evolution of Lester Burnham With roughly ten percent of American adults
suffering from depression, it is no surprise that the disorder is commonly embodied in both
literature and film ( Facts Amp; Statistics. ). One such example of depression personified in a
fictitious character can be found in the 1999 drama American Beauty. Directed by Sam Mendes,
husband and father Lester Burnham experiences symptoms of depression, resulting in an extreme
midlife crisis, ultimately leading to his own demise. Although many assume depression stems solely
from traumatic events or genetic predispositions, Lester s symptoms arise from much more
surreptitious and precarious circumstances: the repetitiveness of Middle America. With a thorough

personhood can evolve in the way Lester s did, to find beauty in the unforgiving world that the
average life of a middle class citizen is gifted. The ability to attain such a sense of impervious
happiness is the real beauty of America, and quite possibly the cure for

Daniel Boorstin s The Image
In his groundbreaking book The Image, historian Daniel Boorstin described how our culture had
created a thicket of unreality which stands between us and the facts of life. 2 Taken together,
telegraphy, photography, radio, cinema, and television brought forth the pseudo event, an
occurrence staged to call attention to itself.
Boorstin was not just concerned with the now familiar photo op or media event. He put his finger
on a much larger problem. Americans not only confused the copy with the original but also
actually preferred the copy to the original. News was no longer gathered; it was made. The
traveler, a person who travails, had been replaced with the tourist a person who stays at American
hotels in France made to look like French ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While communications technologies have become more portable and de massified, they have not
diminished the pseudo event or stopped manufacturing celebrities.
In some ways, the navel gazing that goes on in social media has made us all stars within the

What do Jackson, Elvis, Monroe, and Sinatra have in common? None of them committed heroic
deeds. Nevertheless, each contributed substantially to modern show business. Before World War II,
the singer was subordinate to the orchestra in billing and score. But when Columbia Records

Poehler Antique Mall In Empori Unpacking The Object
1.Unpacking the Object
What is this object? An antique wooden chair
What does the object look like? Antique, old, worn wood. There are curvy edges on the backrest
portion. The wood is very worn on the seat part, and there is a lot of dust on the chair. The right
side of the chair is broken in a jagged break.
Where did you obtain this object? I found this at the Poehler Antique Mall in Emporia, KS. The
antique mall is located on Commercial Street.
Where can you find similar objects? At this antique store, there were tons of old chairs. You could
find more there. I would assume that a lot of antique stores have old pieces of furniture like this
chair. There are probably a lot of these types of chairs in older style homes. They could be found in
table and chair sets, or they could be possibly found in a church.
What is it made of? Wood and screws.
Who made it? Back in history the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I found this object because I like upcycling. Taking old antique items and turning them into
something more modern and useful. I think restoring an object and making it personal to yourself.
Who or what does this object represent? I think this object represents middle class people. Often
the middle class is overlooked and are considered average. This chair is overlooked too because
it is a piece of furniture that almost everyone has, and we don t often think about how the chair
got there or how the chair was made. I think this is similar with a lot of people in the world.
Many people go unnoticed. I hope that by adding color to this old chair, will be like the colorful
personalities many people have, which makes them stand out above others.
What does this object mean to you? I became invested in this chair, I spent a lot of time and
money on this project. I hope the chair will add a new style to my room. It means something
special to me because I took something old and gave it a new look, but the object still does the same

Herman Melville s Moby Dick
Herman Melville has become a well known classic novelist in today s society, most popularly
known for his novel Moby Dick. This book, taught in many high school classrooms, has been
critiqued and analyzed in several ways, the characters and story line becoming familiar throughout
academia. However, what many high school classrooms do not address is the sub textual
homosexual references made throughout the book. In fact, several books authored by Melville,
once viewed upon closer inspection, can be read as a testament to the queer tendencies of the
novelist. Much of the works produced by Melville focus specifically on the interactions between
men and allude to the possible homosexual relationships between the characters. Although Melville

Melville s own life supports the possibilities of a less than heterosexual interpretation, which is
only furthered by his literary works. Specifically, in Melville s novel Moby Dick, there are
several allusions to a possibly intimate relationship between Ishmael and Queequeg, as well as
several sub textual references to homosexual attraction in general. The most blatant example of
this is found in the interactions of Ishmael at the inn in chapters three and four. Not only do they
share a bed, Ishmael claims to have never slept better in [his] life that night (Moby Dick, 64).
Upon waking, Ishmael finds Queequeg s arm thrown over [him] in the most loving and
affectionate manner. He even goes as far as to note: You had almost thought I had been his wife.
(Moby Dick, 65) Later, as Ishmael and Queequeg smoke together, Ishmael states that Queequeg
pressed his forehead against mine, clasped me round the waist, and said henceforth we were
married. (Moby Dick, 112) There are several other allusions to the marriage of the two characters
such as in Melville s description of Queequeg s actions: his bridegroom clasp and hugging a fellow
male in that matrimonial sort of style. (Moby Dick, 68) Another compelling passage from the book

The Death Of The Lighthouse
Edward Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshal in 1954 is heading to Shutter Island a remote island
accessible only by boat, home to Ashecliffe, a secure psychiatric facility with his newly assigned
partner Chuck, to search for a missing patient. As Teddy looks more into the disappearance of
the patient, strange things begin to happen all around him. After his partner s disappearance, he
then comes across a former doctor living in a cave on the side of the island, who tells Teddy that
the doctors are performing experimental surgery in the island s lighthouse. This causes Teddy
to take precarious measures to investigate the lighthouse. Upon reaching the lighthouse, Teddy is
met by the lead psychiatrist and his missing partner, and is told that this was an elaborate role
play, and that he suffered from mental illness following the death of his children and him
murdering his own wife. Teddy comes back to reality as Andrew Laeddis and decides he cannot
live with his reality. Andrew Laeddis (Edward Teddy Daniels) was a middle aged, Caucasian
man, who had a wife and three children before they were murdered. Laeddis was formerly part of
the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp as a soldier in the United States military, then
became a U.S. Marshal after the war had ended. Edward Daniels is an anagram for Andrew
Laeddis, which is Teddy s real identity, which he learns when he has a moment of clarity. He had

The Gender Pay Gap
The Equal Pay Act of 1963, established during the Kennedy administration, promised the people
equal pay for equal work. Since then, the gender wage gap has been narrowing every year, but it
still does exist in the United States. The gender wage gap is the difference between what women
get paid and what men get paid for doing the same job. The discrimination subject on gender
salaries earned by women have continued to be a complicated matter. It has turned into an issue
which combines our business economics and social culture. As time has slowly progressed,
women now make on average 79 cents for every dollar men make. Shockingly, only a 20 cent
increase over the last 54 years. At this rate, per the Institute of Women s Policy Research, it
could take a full 45 years before this gender inequality disappears. One of the main issues why
women are paid less than their male counterparts is simple, because they are women.
Discrimination and stereotyping is the most common argument used to explain the gender pay
gap. There have been numerous research studies that compared to men, are less likely to be hired
and especially for high paying jobs. They unfortunately are offered a much lower salary. For
example, a recent experiment revealed that when a group of science professors were presented
with identical resumes, one with the name John and the other Jennifer, they offered the male
applicant for a lab manager position a salary nearly $4,000 more (NWLC). The professors

Analysing a more humanist approach he argued how treating people as a machine is degrading
towards the human spirit. Furthermore Elton mayo (1984) investigated against rationalisation
approach using the Hawthorne experiments concluding how managers or observers aswell as
colleagues can affect how well people work. Morgan (2006) also looked into human minds and
behaviour and argued that even though machines have an everyday use in society negative effects
can occur such as affecting the human spirit in routinized activities. Rationalisation as an
approach towards Junction Hotel can show its advantages in efficiency levels however; even
efficiency is not always affected in a positive way as Ritzer (2011) explains using the organisation
McDonald s as his focus, constructing social theories in the organisation about how people s
creativity can be restrained in the repetitive workforce. Ritzer (2011) explains his theory upon how
individuals in the workplace are affected by a more psychological perspective. Thinking about the
rationalisation approach towards the Junction Hotel may not only limit staff member s creativity,
but make the current workplace more repetitive and therefore dull. Increasing managing customers
in an efficient time may also create a negative affect by increasing the workload per person

The Mission Of The Rocket Mission
The Rocket Mission The year was 2515. I walked into a nearby old antec shop where they sold
mini Empire State Buildings, Pyramids, and Eiffel Towers. I went in there to collect a mini
Eiffel Tower that the shop brought in, it had been a tradition that one person in my family
would buy an Eiffel tower each year as a remembrance of my family s story of the Tower, and
this year was my year. After I had walked into the shop and was greeted by a funky scent. It
smelled like a mixture of dirty old man and dust. It didn t take me long before I figured out what
the smell was, a small, wrinkly, old man walked up to me, greeting me with what looked like a
bowl filled with dusty candy that must of been there for 20 years. Trying to be polite I took a
candy and shoved it into my pocket knowing that I would never eat it anyway. The old man must
of recognized me because before I had said anything, he slowly hobled to the back of the shop
and came back with something in the basket on his walker. You must be a member of the
Ferguson family, the old man had said in a raspy quiet voice. In reply I said, Yes I am, how did you
know?
You have the facial features of the others that have came in here.
Wow you have a good memory for an old man.

Baz Luhrmann s Production of Romeo and Juliet
Baz Luhrmann s Production of Romeo and Juliet
Romeo seems like a passionate, romantic and excitable young man. He seems to like the idea of
being in love, although I would suggest the feelings he has for Juliet begin only as infatuation and
grow throughout the balcony scene.
In the beginning of the scene Romeo is portrayed as determined, wary and possibly a little
frightened as he knocks over furniture and scrambles up the trellis. His eyes are continuously
darting around and you get a sense of desperation because he is panting. When he climbs the trellis
in the hope of seeing Juliet but discovers the nurse instead, his facial expression turns from one of

Romeo Juliet
Baz Luhrmann Production
1(ii) Dramatic Devices
In the beginning of the scene we see Romeo climbing the orchard wall in complete darkness, but
when he enters the swimming pool area the fairy lights illuminate the immediate vicinity, coupled
with the floral trellis this makes the setting quite romantic.
You get a sense of the era because the house is traditional in style, from the authentic continental
windows to the ageing balusters on the balcony. The size of the house, together with the presence of
a swimming pool gives the impression that Juliet comes from a very affluent background.
The costumes seem appropriate for the period; Juliet wears a simple plain white dress, possibly
portraying virginity and virtuosity and Romeo wears the costume of a knight, which could signify
valour and gallantry. In contrast we see the security guard sporting a very modern outfit complete
with baseball cap, earpiece and headset.

Socrates In Plato s The Apologia
The Apologia
Through the analyzing of The Apologia, is it learned much about the life of Socrates as well as
how he lived. In the Apology, Plato recounts the words given by Socrates during his trying in
which he was sentenced to death. During the trial, Socrates defends himself on two charges, which
are set in writing by Meletus, one of the prosecutors. The first set of charges Socrates refers to them
as the first lying accusations , and are informal charges to set an image of who people believe
Socrates to be. The second set makes up the formal accusations and the charges that they hope
commit Socrates to death.
The speech was given by Socrates to defend himself to the Athenian Council against chargers of
corrupting the young, and by not believing in the gods the city believes that are in the novel.
Although no such speech was recorded, with the idea that Plato was at the trial, we can conclude
that the dialogue of the Apologia contains words as they were remembered by Plato. The original
speech was written in 399 BC in hopes of Socrates defending his reputation against his accusers.
The speech was then rewritten by Plato as remembers the trial and words . Socrates. addresses each

This project examines the construction of subjectivity in...
This project examines the construction of subjectivity in Eleanor Antin s Carving: A Traditional
Sculpture (fig. 1) and Chris Kraus Aliens and Anorexia (fig. 2) . These works inscribe notions of the
self, the social, and the subject through and upon the body, addressing the interpolating poles of
nutritive consumption and willing the body away through self starvation. Throughout this essay, I
will demonstrate how these artists engage with the spaces and discourses created around food and
disordered eating to produce a counter dominant take on subjectivity, a thematic both artists attend
to regularly throughout their careers.

Before attending to theoretical concerns I will first ground my reading in art historical methods,
explicating the position of these works within Antin and Kraus larger oeuvres and within the
historical contexts of their production. An analysis of form and medium also underlines a reading
of these works that privileges self and subjectivity. In Carving, A Traditional Sculpture and Aliens
and Anorexia, the live or temporal practices common throughout Antin and Kraus careers are
respectively mediated through photography and texts. By removing the material body from works
that are essentially performative, the artist looks back over herself, commenting on, while creating
her own lived subjectivity.
I chose to position these two works together because, as Clare Johnson states in her study of
Antin, Vanessa Beecroft, and Elizabeth Manchester, I want to discuss the artworks in terms that
do not presuppose a proper form of feminist art practice, or suggest that the contemporary work
supersedes the critical strategies of the earlier piece. Johnson s articulated aims are not to claim
any single artist or artwork as feminist, per se, but to create rich and complex readings that
articulate the inscriptions of feminist practice and reflect the relational web of mutually
constitutive meanings. This web frames a discussion of Kraus and Antin s work, allowing for a
critical co reading of works produced at different

A negative beta means that the asset s returns generally move opposite the market s returns. One
will tend to be above its average when the other is below its average. Beta is also referred to as a
financial elasticity or correlated relative volatility, and can be referred to as a measure of the
sensitivity of the asset s returns to market returns. Measuring beta can give clues to volatility and
liquidity in the marketplace. Investors can find the best use of the beta ratio in short term decision
making, where price volatility is important. If you are planning to buy and sell within a short
period, beta is a good measure of risk.

Tracy Latimer Utilitarianism
The case of Tracy Latimer was in fact a tragic story, about a 12 year old girl who was killed by
her father. Tracy Latimer lived in Saskatchewan, on a farm with her family. Tracy had cerebral
palsy which is an incurable disease; she was confined to a wheelchair for her entire life. Tracy
was not able to live the life of an ordinary person. What Tracy could do, was she enjoyed listening
to music and spending time with her family. Tracy was also taking other medication like pain
relievers and the treatment which resulted in toxic levels that disrupted her system; she would
throw up her food and was dehydrated (Bauslaugh, 2010) . Robert Latimer who was the father

Therefore I don t believe it was selfish for Robert Latimer to take the life of his daughter. When
someone is suffering in pain, and cannot enjoy life even though it may look like they are, it is
not ruthless to say that the person was happy with how things were. In this defense, I do not
agree with the verdict the Supreme Court gave. I say this because I know that in the eyes of
certain people, killing an innocent child is wrong. However, Tracy Latimer on a daily basis was
continuingly getting worse and nothing was helping her. The pain, the drugs, the grief, the
treatment; everything was going downhill for Tracy and Robert Latimer just wanted to make it all
better. I believe the sentence that should have been given was one to two years in jail, because
Robert Latimer did understand what he did was wrong and he never did say that he didn t feel

Essay On Gold Rush
Gold Rush in the United States It is amazing how a small gold nugget drew a large mass of
miners into Cherokee Nation s grounds. Most people never associate Georgia and gold. Instead
they associate Georgia with slaves, plantations, and cotton fields. One of the unusual events in
the Gold Rush was the surprising find of gold in Georgia. A three ounce gold nugget was found.
People began to search for gold in the caves. Once more gold was found they began to dig for the
precious gold nuggets. First, gold was found in Georgia records indicate to have been in 1829.
John Witheroods found a three ounce nugget along Duke s Creek in Habersham County (present
day) White County . (David Williams) Others will dispute who actually found the first piece of
gold nugget. Some people say it was a gentlemen from North Carolina, found gold nugget in the
same location. There is no concrete evidence who was the first one to find gold. Once the news
reached the surrounding areas and states. The large number of miners was greater than initially
expected to have been. Many Gold Rush towns were quickly built in the north part of Georgia,
which was near the area where gold was found. The towns grew from a handful of families to...

Leadership In Julius Caesar
What does leadership mean to someone? For most, it s how someone can make an impact. There
are many important aspects of being a leader. The power of a great leader starts with the right
mindset and willingness to accomplish what needs to be accomplished. One that is always a
couple steps ahead and is there to look out for others. In William Shakespeare s famous play, Julius
Caesar, few characters happen to have to right amount of potential to become a leader of Rome.
With the death of the ruler Julius Caesar, two counter viewing characters gave a speech about
Caesar which caused different reactions. One character in particular, Mark Antony, sticks out due to
his great use of language and how he created an impact on Rome s people. Marcus Brutus on the
other hand, also attempted to influence the people, but his inability to be more persuasive than
Antony is what caused him to receive the more negative feedback. Brutus indeed spoke
logically, but Antony would happen to make a better candidate as a leader because he spoke to
the emotions of the people and knew what was right. Mark Antony qualifies as a superior leader
because of his ability to connect with the people and by proving his loyalty. He is a solemn,
confident, and persuasive man which are key reasons why he would make an outstanding ruler.
In Julius Caesar, his confidence often shows. The threefold world divided, he should stand
/ One of the three to share it, (IV.i.14 15). Antony questioned whether or not Lepidus would be
fitting to rule a third of the world. Antony would take one half, Octavius the other half and they
would rule because he believed Lepidus was not capable. Antony s confidence shows his
capability of being a leader. Relating back to the speech given at Caesar s funeral, Brutus gave a
logical speech compared to Antony s persuasiveness which made the people have a different
feedback and overall different impact on who they believed was more trustworthy. Along with
Antony s confidence, his nobility towards others would have made him a great leader. His
nobility was for Julius Caesar especially, who he was very close to. When Caesar died, Antony
wanted revenge because of the unjust way he was murdered. Cry Havoc! and let slip the

temporarily reduce or delay the shortage. On the positive side, such a shortage increases the
demand for labor, which can potentially result in a reduced unemployment rate as well as higher
wages. As the birthrate in developed countries drops well below the replacement rate of 2.1
children born to every woman, to somewhere between 1.1 and 1.4 children the declining population

because it is thought to go hand in hand with economic decline. With fewer, younger workers to

What is time? Time is inevitable. It is a constant that continues on and on. Along with time comes
change. As time goes on, change grows stronger. In the sonnet, When I do count the clock that tells
the time, the persona discusses time in a sense of change. Everything around us changes. People
change, animals change, plants change, the world changes, views change, and even society
changes. When analyzing this sonnet we can see that the persona uses descriptive words to convey
an image, symbolism and metaphors create a deeper meaning, and an original but unique rhyme
scheme to create a relationship between the lines of the sonnet.
Body Paragraph #1 Imagery There are many forms of imagery that can be seen when analyzing this
sonnet. One form is the idea of harvest. This is referenced to in line 7 and line 13. And summer s
green all girded up in sheaves... And nothing gainst Time s scythe can make defence... In these
two lines we see the persona talk about crops in the summer time and how they are tied up in
sheaves. The in the winter, Time s scythe kills summer by cutting the crops and harvesting them.
Another form of imagery is the change of seasons from Summer to Winter and the change of
time from Day to Night. The imagery of a change of seasons is located all throughout the sonnet
and is used to support other forms of imagery such as aging from young to old. However, the
imagery of Day to Night is located in lines 2 3. And see the brave day sunk in hideous

Graffiti Vandalism
Structures that stretch high above of the hustle and bustle of cars and people on the ground level,
going through any big city numerous attractions can steal your attention away. There s so much to
absorb some things will never be noticed. Walls of buildings and sides of train cars are rarely
acknowledged with all the advertising, architecture, and of course the tagging. An average person
would consider the widespread art form of graffitian eyesore, but others would disagree. Who s to
say what is art as opposed to trash vandalism? Since the late 60 s people have hit the streets, cans
of paint in hand, to scrawl their wildest dreams onto whatever canvas they could find.
Philadelphia high school student Cornbread is credited with starting this movement in 1967 in
attempts to get the attention of a girl he fancied (The History Of American Graffiti). Others took
notice and began to search for any surface they could post up a piece. Graffiti is stereotypically
defined to be strictly in a public place or be illegal. Opposite to that there are legal graffiti
locations such as 5 Pointz in Queens or street museums such as Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn
run by Joe Ficalora where people are allowed to paint as they please free from repercussions
(Kennedy, Graffiti Art of the City, From the Bronx to Brooklyn). Additionally, since it s expansion,
in the 80s galleries began to showcase this vandalism as artworks. Curators and collectors even

Auto Wreck
Auto Wreck by Karl Shapiro is an impressionistic poem that delves into the understanding of
technology and the horrific contentment that society has with automobile wrecks. Written during
the 1940 s Shapiro has been known for writing about simplistic things yet with grave detail. In
Auto Wreck Shapiro uses similes and metaphors to describe a surreal feeling of an automobile
wreck. He has determined that everyday citizens have become too detached from the everyday
violence caused by automobiles. Shapiro aims to prove that the mechanical monsters that threaten
everyday life have become too mundane in today s society. During the poem, Karl Shapiro uses an

He states that every auto wreck can cause a massive amount of danger while being ignored by
the common people around the wreckage. He goes on to describe the wreckage as Empty husks

an extravagant and almost unreal in the destruction that it causes to the people involved. He
describes the people by saying We are deranged, walking among the cops. (Line 15) He is
showing how the people are mentally disturbed by the extreme amount of damage that has
happened. Shapiro then goes into detail describing the way the police cover up the horrific
violence that has happened. One with a bucket douches ponds of blood (Line 18) this line
referees to the police washing away the heavy ponds of blood in the streets. This seems to be
common for the police as they already have an understanding of how to deal with this extravagant
violence. He details the world around him and how some officers have different jobs when
cleaning the car crash up. The officers almost seemed detached from this violence as they have
become used to this violence. It s a horrific thought that these officers could be so accepting of this

Nursing Homes
Just the mere mention of nursing home causes most people to shudder and think, I would never

nursing homes, most along the lines of , My mother was neglected after I put her in a nursing home.
I would go to visit her and she would be lying in urine and have a new bruise, different than the

The predominance of residents in nursing homes are long term, meaning they will never recover
enough to be on their own again. For every 100 residents there are 35 that will die in the nursing
home and 37 will transfer to a hospital before dying (Day). This does not mean that it was the
facilities fault, it just shows that many patients are already reaching their final days when they are
placed in a nursing home. People should not expect the nursing homes to revitalize every single
resident, considering most are in there for extreme health problems.
The nursing homes that are present today have definitely evolved a great deal from where they first
started. Before the 19th century, no age restricted institutions existed in order to care for long term
residents. The elderly people who had an incapacity, were impoverished, or had no family, often
ended their days in almshouses (FATE). In these almshouses, elders had to live with those who were
insane, intoxicated, and homeless. The older individuals ended up being the dominant residents in
the almshouses so superintendents changes the names of these asylums. By 1923, the proportion of
elders had increased to 67% in the institutions, and managers stated they could find everything they
needed (FATE). This began the formation of nursing homes, however, there was still a negative
view that came from the almshouses. People still

different tactics to defeat their battle with depression. As shown in both Judith Guest s novel
Ordinary People and William Styron s essay Darkness Visible, music is a recurring symbol that
functions as a helping aid throughout the stages of recovery. Both Conrad, the protagonist of
Ordinary People, and Styron are tormented with severe depression and trying to overcome suicidal
urges; Guest shares Conrad s journey of recovery, while Styron reflects on his own experience of
suffering. These stories slightly differ in genre, since one is fiction and the other is non fiction, but

Euthanasia: A Moral Dilemma
In a brightly lit, cold white room, Dr. Jesse is discussing the extent of the life threatening disease
that a patient, Mark, has. Mark has a chance of survival, but only for about two torturous months
where he will have to separate himself from his normal life and engage in chemotherapy every
day. When first hearing about his situation, Mark immediately decides that plowing through two
painful months is not worth his time or effort, and he wishes to end his life on a positive note
without wearing down his body since he will have to depart sooner or later anyways. Now when
confronted with Mark s decision, Dr. Jesse freezes and rationalizes with his beliefs to try and
figure out the morally correct resolution to this problem. Like Mark, many other ill patients ask for
life termination to relieve themselves from suffering and many other doctors, like Dr. Jesse, are
also placed in this position where they must choose to either follow the patients requests, or to try

The Importance Of A Four Day Work
Introduction The definition of a four day work week varies depending who you are talking to. It
can refer to four eight hour days; four ten hour days; or even four twelve to fourteen hour days.
However all variations of a four day work week fall under the umbrella term alternative work
arrangement. This term refers to any work schedule that varies from the standard five, eight
hour work day that the majority of the United States population is used to (Bird 1063). For the
purposes of this paper I will be talking about a compressed four day work week, not a shortened
four day work week or extended four day work week, this refers to a four hour work week I will
be talking about a schedule that consists of four, ten hour days, which is still a full forty hour
work week. I will be taking a close look at the benefits and drawback to both the employer and
the employee when it comes to working a four day work week. In addition to looking at the
benefits to those directly related, the employer and employee, I will also touch on some benefits
to those who are indirectly benefited; which refers to the general population. At first glance it
would appear to many people that a four day work week is not different than a standard five day
work week; after all the same number of hours are being work at weeks end. So, that begs the
question why is it that only roughly 960,000 Americans, which is less than 1% of the labor force
work a four day work week (Thank God it s Thursday? 74)?

Essay on The Beginning of Hip Hop Culture and B-Boy Battling

training makes you feel that it can only workout the body. Listening to music trains the mind
much more than providing a clean set or combination. Mood and attitude affect the way a dancer
dances, and since hip hop is so raw and clean, b boys and b girls train in a matter to be raw and

what to do in a split second. Endurance is surely there, especially in the moment of a battle. The
competitive nature of hip hop can be somewhat violent at times, but only because it reflects what
street dancers go through and do everyday just to be on top of the cliff. A battle can get mean;
you can get your opponent so humiliating that they will want to fight you (Swift, Ken. The Vibe

killing the elephant, Orwell states, I had got to shoot the elephant. I had committed myself to doing
it when I sent for the rifle. A sahib has got to act like a sahib... (Orwell: Shooting an Elephant). This
statement illustrates how people with power must live up to their expectations to keep that

inconsistency that humans have when power takes over. This is one of Orwell s morals he
stresses to his audience to make them realize the poor decisions people make when in power.
Orwell s writings are most identifiable by the idea that a sense of pride in one s actions and thoughts

The Importance Of Bully On Body Weight
In today s society women and girls are pressure to worry about their body sizes. Females think
they have to be petite. Women and girls should not have to be pressured about their body
weight. The pressure about their body weight comes from either girls are getting bullied about
their size , trying to fit in , or even think their weight isn t good enough for an relationship.
Women need to stop pressuring their self about their body size and just be happy. Always

bullied for not having a perfect body . Nowadays if your not a size 0 , you are to big. Body hatred

Classical Music Influences Our Body s Vital Movements
Music of any genre or style that originates from a sincere and pure motivation, empowered not by
the energies of one s self, but rather by something greater, exists beyond time, culture, or history.
Classical music includes many principles that define the true meaning of the value of the classical
sounds of music. Detail of the compositional structure and other technical aspects contribute to the
most seemingly insignificant nuances. The structural integrity and balancing utilizing of tones

This ability is important for generating and conceptualizing multi step problems. The purpose of
this experimental study was to investigate the effect of The Mozart Effect: Music for Children
collection on the social, cognitive, and physical development of five and six year olds. The music
of Mozart was introduced into the children s environment as a sensory background for the standard
curriculum because as children grow, their social, cognitive, and physical skills can be enhanced by
their relationship with music. Many researchers have studied young children because their brains
are in the process of developing. Young children are also innocent and are incapable for fully
understanding the study being researched, therefore they do not have the capacity to control or
manipulate the study.
The study showed the effect of classical music on young children. Young children who listen to
music regularly demonstrate better development than those who do not. The study focused on the
development of kindergarten children; twenty one children were exposed to classical music in their
classroom setting, while the other twenty one children were not exposed to music at all throughout
their time in the classroom (Mattar et al., 2013). These young children range from five to six years
in age. Young children who listen to music regularly demonstrate better

  • 2. Analysis Of `` Fences `` By August Wilson A family by definition is any group of individuals living together under a common roof. However, it does happen that sometimes a certain member of the family decides to forget what it means to be part of a family. August Wilson s Fences portrays extremely well what happens when a member of the family decides to forget his or her duties. The use of metaphors and symbols throughout the playsuch as baseball and fences, illustrate exactly why Troy Maxson as a family man was destined for disappointment. Troy on the other hand had a completely different approach when it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, what many high school classrooms do not address is the sub textual homosexual references made throughout the book. In fact, several books authored by Melville, once viewed upon closer inspection, can be read as a testament to the queer tendencies of the novelist. Specifically, in Melville s novel Moby Dick, there are several allusions to a possibly intimate relationship between Ishmael and Queequeg, as well as several sub textual references to homosexual attraction in general. The most blatant example of this is found in the interactions of Ishmael at the inn in chapters three and four. Not only do they share a bed, Ishmael claims to have never slept better in [his] life that night (Moby Dick, 64). Upon waking, Ishmael finds Queequeg s arm thrown over [him] in the most loving and affectionate manner. He even goes as far as to note: You had almost thought I had been his wife. Since then, the gender wage gap has been narrowing every year, but it still does exist in the United States. The gender wage gap is the difference between what women get paid and what men get paid for doing the same job. The discrimination subject on gender salaries earned by women have continued to be a complicated matter. It has turned into an issue which combines our business economics and social culture. As time has slowly progressed, women now make on average 79 cents for every dollar men make. Shockingly, only a 20 cent increase over the last 54 years. At this rate, per the Institute of Women s Policy Research, it could take a full 45 years before this gender inequality disappears. One of the main issues why women are paid less than their male counterparts is simple, because they are women. Discrimination and stereotyping is the most common argument used to explain the gender pay gap. There have been numerous research studies that compared to men, are less likely to be hired and especially for high paying jobs. They unfortunately are offered a much lower salary. In the Apology, Plato recounts the words given by Socrates during his trying in which he was sentenced to death. During the trial, Socrates defends himself on two charges, which are set in writing by Meletus, one of the prosecutors. The first set of charges Socrates refers to them as the first lying accusations , and are informal charges to set an image of who people believe Socrates to be. The second set makes up the formal accusations and the charges that they hope commit Socrates to death. The speech was given by Socrates to defend himself to the Athenian Council against chargers of corrupting the young, and by not believing in the gods the city believes that are in the novel. Although no such speech was recorded, with the idea that Plato was at the trial, we can conclude that the dialogue of the Apologia contains words as they were remembered by Plato. In Carving, A Traditional Sculpture and Aliens and Anorexia, the live or temporal practices common throughout Antin and Kraus careers are respectively mediated through photography and texts. By removing the material body from works that are essentially performative, the artist looks back over herself, commenting on, while creating her own lived subjectivity. I chose to position these two works together because, as Clare Johnson states in her study of Antin, Vanessa Beecroft, and Elizabeth Manchester, I want to discuss the artworks in terms that do not presuppose a proper form of feminist art practice, or suggest that the contemporary work supersedes the critical strategies of the earlier piece. Johnson s articulated aims are not to claim any single artist or artwork as feminist, per se, but to create rich and complex readings that articulate the inscriptions of feminist practice and reflect the relational web of mutually constitutive meanings. • 26. Leadership In Julius Caesar What does leadership mean to someone? For most, it s how someone can make an impact. There are many important aspects of being a leader. The power of a great leader starts with the right mindset and willingness to accomplish what needs to be accomplished. One that is always a couple steps ahead and is there to look out for others. In William Shakespeare s famous play, Julius Caesar, few characters happen to have to right amount of potential to become a leader of Rome. With the death of the ruler Julius Caesar, two counter viewing characters gave a speech about Caesar which caused different reactions. One character in particular, Mark Antony, sticks out due to his great use of language and how he created an impact on Rome s people. Marcus Brutus on the other hand, also attempted to influence the people, but his inability to be more persuasive than Antony is what caused him to receive the more negative feedback. Brutus indeed spoke logically, but Antony would happen to make a better candidate as a leader because he spoke to the emotions of the people and knew what was right. Mark Antony qualifies as a superior leader because of his ability to connect with the people and by proving his loyalty. He is a solemn, confident, and persuasive man which are key reasons why he would make an outstanding ruler. In Julius Caesar, his confidence often shows. The threefold world divided, he should stand / One of the three to share it, (IV.i.14 15). Antony questioned whether or not Lepidus would be fitting to rule a third of the world. Antony would take one half, Octavius the other half and they would rule because he believed Lepidus was not capable. Antony s confidence shows his capability of being a leader. Relating back to the speech given at Caesar s funeral, Brutus gave a logical speech compared to Antony s persuasiveness which made the people have a different feedback and overall different impact on who they believed was more trustworthy. Along with Antony s confidence, his nobility towards others would have made him a great leader. His nobility was for Julius Caesar especially, who he was very close to. When Caesar died, Antony wanted revenge because of the unjust way he was murdered. Cry Havoc! and let slip the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The predominance of residents in nursing homes are long term, meaning they will never recover enough to be on their own again. For every 100 residents there are 35 that will die in the nursing home and 37 will transfer to a hospital before dying (Day). This does not mean that it was the facilities fault, it just shows that many patients are already reaching their final days when they are placed in a nursing home. People should not expect the nursing homes to revitalize every single resident, considering most are in there for extreme health problems. The nursing homes that are present today have definitely evolved a great deal from where they first started. Before the 19th century, no age restricted institutions existed in order to care for long term residents. The elderly people who had an incapacity, were impoverished, or had no family, often ended their days in almshouses (FATE). In these almshouses, elders had to live with those who were insane, intoxicated, and homeless. The older individuals ended up being the dominant residents in the almshouses so superintendents changes the names of these asylums. However all variations of a four day work week fall under the umbrella term alternative work arrangement. This term refers to any work schedule that varies from the standard five, eight hour work day that the majority of the United States population is used to (Bird 1063). I will be taking a close look at the benefits and drawback to both the employer and the employee when it comes to working a four day work week. In addition to looking at the benefits to those directly related, the employer and employee, I will also touch on some benefits to those who are indirectly benefited; which refers to the general population. At first glance it would appear to many people that a four day work week is not different than a standard five day work week; after all the same number of hours are being work at weeks end. He is not simply describing an elephant shooting or a hanging; he is trying to make readers listen to his messages. One of the messages that Orwell wants his readers to understand is the power that role playing has on the human mind. Orwell demonstrates this theme quite easily in both essays. Before killing the elephant, Orwell states, I had got to shoot the elephant. I had committed myself to doing it when I sent for the rifle. A sahib has got to act like a sahib... (Orwell: Shooting an Elephant). This statement illustrates how people with power must live up to their expectations to keep that power. He knows he has the power to kill the animal, so he makes himself fit the role of a killer. Power can affect the way people act. A modern day example of this is shown when gang members act on thoughts of the group to gain acceptance by other members. The acceptance gives them power and this is a universal idea that Orwell focuses on. Orwell also stresses power to describe human nature. Orwell likes to use this in both essays because it explains the inconsistency that humans have when power takes over.
