This document analyzes the relationship between professional media and research literature in American dentistry. It finds that dental media frequently discusses recent research findings, with about 6% of articles referencing research papers. Media sources cover research from a variety of journals across dentistry. Case studies of cone beam computed tomography literature show growth in both research publications and media coverage over time, with some media specifically focusing on discussing research results. Topic modeling reveals overlaps between topics discussed in research versus dental media.

Scholars imagined audiences

When participating online, individuals draw on the limited cues they have available to create for themselves an imagined audience (Litt, 2012). Such audiences shape users’ social media practices, and thus the expression of identity online (Marwick & boyd, 2011). In this research we posed the following questions: (1) how do scholars conceptualize their audiences when participating on social media, and (2) how does that conceptualization impact their self-expression online? By answering these questions, we aim to provide a more nuanced picture of scholars’ social media practices and experiences. The audiences imagined by the scholars we interviewed appear to be well defined rather than the nebulous constructions often described in previous studies (e.g. Brake, 2012; Vitak, 2012). While scholar indicated that some audiences were unknown, none noted that their audience was unfamiliar. This study also shows that a misalignment exists between the audiences that scholars imagine encountering online and the audiences that higher education institutions imagine their scholars encountering online.

This document discusses measuring societal impact of research. It defines societal impact as social, environmental, cultural or economic benefits from academic activities. Measuring societal impact is challenging due to the attribution problem. The UK Research Excellence Framework assesses societal impact through impact case studies that describe impact in different areas. Altmetrics are proposed as a potential way to measure broader impacts, though they may better reflect scientific rather than societal impact. A case study using multidimensional analysis of research groups at the University of Granada found some groups with profiles oriented toward teaching dissemination, media impact, and knowledge transfer as indicators of societal impact.

A Systematic Analysis And Synthesis of the Empirical MOOC Literature Publishe...

A deluge of empirical research became available on MOOCs in 2013-2015 and this research is available in disparate sources. This paper addresses a number of gaps in the scholarly understanding of MOOCs and presents a comprehensive picture of the literature by examining the geographic distribution, publication outlets, citations, data collection and analysis methods, and research strands of empirical research focusing on MOOCs during this time period. Results demonstrate that: more than 80% of this literature is published by individuals whose home institutions are in North America and Europe; a select few papers are widely cited while nearly half of the papers are cited zero times; and researchers have favored a quantitative if not positivist approach to the conduct of MOOC research, preferring the collection of data via surveys and automated methods. While some interpretive research was conducted on MOOCs in this time period, it was often basic and only a handful of studies were informed by methods traditionally associated with qualitative research (e.g., interviews, observations, focus groups). Analysis shows that there is limited research reported on instructor-related topics, and that even though researchers have attempted to identify and classify learners into various groupings, very little research examines the experiences of learner subpopulations.

This introductory presentation was delivered at universities in Kosovo, an area where current findings suggest that more needs to be done to promote academic integrity. This included lectures and debates in Pristina on 22 November 2017 and Prizren on 23 November 2017. The slides include research findings from the South East European Project on Policies for Academic Integrity (SEEPPAI). The presentations were made as part of Council of Europe activity to address corruption in the region.

This paper aims at exploring the coverage of the Altmetric.com database and its potential use in order to show universities’ research profiles in relationship with other databases. Specifically, our objectives are the following: 1. Analyse the coverage of Altmetric.com at the institutional level and verify its validity as a data source for obtaining alternative metrics derived from the research activity of universities in comparison with those from the Web of Science. For this, we will work with a small sample of four Spanish universities. 2. Analyse coverage differences when obtainin bibliometric profiles from Altmetric.com and Web of Science. In some studies a higher coverage of the Social Sciences and Humanities has been reported, suggesting the potential of altmetric indicators in these areas (Costas, Zahedi, & Wouters, 2015b).

How do learners in MOOCs attempt to resolve challenges they face?

We draw on interviews with more than 90 students from four massive open online courses (MOOCs) to investigate how students define challenging experiences/elements within MOOCs and how they then overcome those challenges. Findings enrich nascent scholarly understanding of MOOC learner experiences, highlight dimensions of learning that are not captured by tracking logs, and provide new approaches that MOOC developers can take in improving student learning experiences.

The drug development process is lengthy, expensive and highly prescriptive. Many drug trials will fail or run into difficulties, and so there is a constant pressure for even marginal improvements. Surprisingly, many of the salient problems are concerned with "soft" or social knowledge: who are the "best" clinical investigators to work with? What other investigators might they know that they can recruit? What is their conversation in the therapeutic space? Here we detail our experiences in mining academic literature, social networks and publications to build a social graph for figures in the drug trial space. By interrogating this graph and integrating it with text analysis of their dialogue, we hope to be able to identify key figures that can be engaged, and useful people and sites that can be recruited into clinical trials, thus making the development of new therapies more efficient.

Presentation for #OEGlobal in Kraków, Poland If one of our goals as educators is to develop these transversal skills in students, towards enabling them to function as citizens, to actively participate in the discourse and debates of society, then we propose that Open Data can play a key role. Open Data is produced and used at various levels in research, governance, policy making and civil society. In educational and academic contexts, Open Data can be understood and used as an Open Educational Resource (OER) to help support the engagement of students and researchers in analysing and collaborating towards finding solutions for contemporary real-world problems, chiefly by embedding Open Data and Open Science principles in research-based, scenario-led activities. OER16 - Skills not Silos - Open Data as OER

Open Data is produced and used at various levels in research, governance, policy making and civil society. So far though, conversation around its value and significance has tended to occur within an Open Data silo, existing in parallel with other open discussions around Open Educational Resources and Open Access. In our presentation we explore practices which make use of Open Data as OER, with a focus on the the opportunities and challenges inherent in this approach. For the OECD, “All citizens should have equal opportunities and multiple channels to access information, be consulted and participate. Every reasonable effort should be made to engage with as wide a variety of people as possible.” A central challenge in higher education is to develop skills useful not only at subject/professional level, but which also engage students with real-word problems. The skills needed to participate in democratic discussions can be understood as transversal skills, defined by UNESCO (2015) as “Critical and innovative thinking, inter-personal skills; intra personal skills, and global citizenship”. If one of our goals as educators is to develop these transversal skills in students, towards enabling them to function as citizens, to actively participate in the discourse and debates of society, then we propose that Open Data can play a key role. Open Data has been understood as key to research, policy and governance development, and also heralded as a force for democratic discourse and participation, but in our view, this is not achieved by opening data alone. By using Open Data in research- and scenario- based learning activities, educators can enhance the information, digital, statistical and data analysis literacies that can empower students, and ultimately citizens and communities. Such pedagogic activities allow students to learn using the same raw materials researchers and policy- makers produce and use. Drawing from a series of case studies of the use of Open Data as OER, we suggest educators consider the following elements Focus: define the research problem and its relation to the environment students. Practicality: match technical applications and practices to expected solutions. Expectations: set realistic expectations for data analysis. Directions: support in finding data portals which contain appropriate information. Training: provide training materials for the software students will need to analyse the data. Location: use global, local and scientific data which is as granular as possible. Modelling: develop model solutions to guide students on the challenges and activities. Collaboration: support students to work collaboratively and at multidisciplinary level. Communication: support students in communicating their findings to local or wider communities.

Natalia Manola is a research associate in the University of Athens, Department of Informatics and Telecommunications and the “Athena” Technology and Innovation Research Center.
