Marcel Derain The Burning Of Houses
The way that the colors are used within The Houses of Parliament are very expressive way while the
Burning of Houses, the colors are used in a more realistic manner. André Derain uses the concept of
warm and cool colors in specific areas of the painting; for example he uses warm colors within the sky
and the buildings and the bridge and the people are in cooler colors. The buildings go in a transition
from one end to the other startin with a scarlet red and transfers ( not really in a blended way ) into a
yellow tone. You also see a more faded yellow and red more towards the ground as is up to the top of
the buildings. The clouds are rather white with a tint of yellow and red within them which probably
shows that they re the same temperature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ironically warm colors are red, orange, and yellow and cool colors are blue, green, and purple;
Although this is true it seems to be quite backwards in this painting. Here in this painting I believe that
the day is cooler day as if it were autumn at that time because green an blue are cooler colors; Also the
buildOnes maybe warmer because inside it s always warmer, however noticing the taller building is
more green which shows that it s more cooler up top. Now I m the Burning Houses of the Lords the
colors are used exactly how they would be thought of because the name burning houses clearly
presents itself within the image. You can tell the warm colors from the cool colors since the flames are
showing the colors red, orange, and yellow showing that the temperature is very hot as fire always is. I
also see water and the sky within this image as well and they pose to be cooler colors which appear to
be blues, greens and other colors that are in the cool state. This painting clearly shows where different
temperatures are as apposed to André Derains painting where you more have to guess where the

Pilot Galavant Character
Galavant fails Sid because he is too unmotivated to teach his squire what he needs to progress. In the
beginning of the episode Pilot, Sid has to drag Galavant out of bed while he complains about Sid
saying Madalena s name. Galavant is brokenhearted and drunk instead of teaching Sid, which hinders
Sid s quest because a squire is someone in training to become a knight. Galavant s job as Sid s mentor
is to teach him everything he needs to know about knighthood. However, Galavant occupies himself
with being heartbroken because he lost the love of his life, which means that he is not taking jobs or
fulfilling knightly duties. If Sid cannot accompany Galavant on quests and learn what he needs to
know, he will never become a knight because Galavant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the wedding scene of Pilot, the camera pans to Madalena multiple times as Galavant speaks. Her
facial expressions show that she is realizing she actually has options that don t include Galavant, a
sign that she lacked agency in her relationship with him. By finally being in a position where she can
use her agency instead of being spoken for by Galavant, Madalena says what she wants to do and is
not overshadowed by him. Because he continuously tried to speak for Madalena, Galavant failed her
by believing that just because he always thinks about Madalena and loves her she will automatically
come back to him like he is the only objective she has in life. Galavant never giving Madalena a
chance to speak for herself is a hindrance to her quest for power and his own quest for self knowledge.
Also in the wedding scene of Pilot, Galavant speaks for Madalena during his monologue, which shows
that even though he loves her, Galavant is inconsiderate of the fact she is her own person and not just
his lady love. As soon as Galavant interrupts the wedding between King Richard and Madalena, he
starts talking about himself and how he is certain Madalena will choose him because she loves him as
much as he loves her. By expecting her to come back like an object that belongs to him, he is not
allowing her to have free will and use her agency. By speaking for Madalena and not letting her make

Wang Lung s In The Good Earth
In the Good Earth, the book s setting of early 20th century China helps to enforce the theme of the
book, which, in my opinion based on the book, is You can t just accept the hand that life deals you.
That s exactly what Wang Lung does. In this book Wang is a farmer in 20th century China. He doesn t
choose this profession, it s the only thing he knows how to do. In China, the farming can be...
unpredictable, rivers may flood one year and run dry the next, swarms of locusts may show up or rebel
soldiers may burn the fields. The farmers had to deal with all of this and more, many of the farmers
(i.e. Ching) would say Heaven wills it (chapter 27, paragraph 8), but Wang Lung would have none of
it, he would curse the gods and stand in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the fact that women weren t viewed as equals during that time period, Wang Lung treats his
wife, O Lan, like a slave more than anything else. Regardless of this fact, O lan endures the hardships
of being a farmer s wife and living as a poor woman in early 20th century China. That was one of the
more important messages that this book was trying to convey. Pearl Buck wrote this book at the tail
end of the First Wave American Feminism movement and O lan was a strong female character
designed to support the idea that women are equals and really should be treated thusly. A prime
example of this is when O Lan is dying and cannot move from her bed, Wang Lung admits that he
would sell his land to keep her healthy, even though for the majority of the book he does not treat her
well. Although this isn t mentioned directly, he comes to realize that the main reason for his success
after he returned from the south was due to a decision that O Lan made. She stole jewels from a rich
family while they were in the southern city and that led to Wang Lung s influx of money which, in
turn, allowed him to become as rich as he was at the time of O Lan s

Winn-Texie Lessons
The lessons of this learning segment build on one another as the week goes on. All of the lessons are a
part of a Because of Winn Dixie unit for Fourth grade. The first lesson begins with the first chapter of
the lesson and the introduction of visualization as a strategy to aid in comprehension. This flows
nicely into the next day because the students will follow the same read then work pattern in the lesson.
The second lesson focuses on character actions and reactions through the reading of the first two
chapters. Students can use what they visualized in lesson one to help them with character actions. The
third lesson builds on the character knowledge by delving deeper into the specific character traits that
each character possesses. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

strategies that were taught. Before children would work on assignments alone, the teacher would
model exactly what is expected of them, and keep examples of what was modeled during the lesson so
the students could look back to it if they need to. Read alouds (Cooper, 2015, p. 37) were used in this
lesson to really help children to focus on certain topics of the text. Sometimes the best way to help
children understand a particular piece of text is to read it aloud to them and discuss it with them
(Cooper, 2015, p. 37). Think alouds (Cooper, 2015, p. 30) were incorporated into this lesson when
trying to explain how to use the strategy of character mapping. Think alouds are a great way to explain
to students how to use a specific skill or strategy so that they can have a better time comprehending it.
Semantic maps (Cooper, 2015, p.83) were used in this lesson for brainstorming ideas from the text to
later reference when making illustrations and creating short responses to the text. This strategy is also
a great tool for second language learners because it helps to narrow down the specific parts in the text
to help create more details of the topic being taught. Cooperative popcorn sequencing(Annenburg
Learner, 2015) was used in the lesson to allow a variety of students to participate in the

Satan In John Milton s Paradise Lost
When hearing the word Satan , people often think of a red man with horns, a pitchfork, and a tail; he is
often visualized in the pits of the underworld surrounded by flames. Why does society picture him this
way? Some may say Because he is evil or Because he fell from heaven , but people mostly believe this
because this is what they were taught. Satan is a figure appearing in many texts of religion as someone
who brings evil and temptation. He is known as the deceiver who leads humanity astray, like he
deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. Some religious groups teach that he originated as an
angel, or something like an angel, who used to possess great piety and beauty, but fell because of
pride. He seduced humanity into the ways of falsehood and sin, and has power in the fallen world; in
other groups, Satan, also called the devil, is described as a more malevolent entity opposed to God.
Although Satan is generally viewed as having negative characteristics, some groups have very
different beliefs. Throughout literature, Satan has been represented as the evillest entity to ever have
existed, but Satan is not truly as evil as he is portrayed because he is more of an anti hero or Byronic
Hero in texts such as John Milton s Paradise Lost as well as other academic scholars arguments, rather
than being a complete antagonist. According to the Christian s perspective of the Bible, before Adam
and Eve, God made the angels. The most beautiful angel God made was named

Descriptive Essay On Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls, Canada
Niagara Falls is my favorite vacation destination. The history and museums have been interesting and
kept me wondering about the people that have gone over the Niagara Falls for years. Why did they do
it? There have been many people to go over the Falls, some survived and some did not. People take it
as a challenge or even just for fun. Many believe that they may come out being rich, they either have a
great experience and are able to say they survived the Niagara Falls or they perish to their death. It is
against the law to go over the Falls and you will be charged, thousands. I love to watch documentaries
on Niagara Falls and hear about the people that have gone over the Falls and survived. Niagara Falls is
in North America, it is in Ontario, Canada and is on the border of America and Canada. Canada is in
the Era of Global capitalism as of 2017, this means that they are in a transitional state with open ended
evolution of capital. The Falls are a great source of electricity for Ontario. Canada is moving into the
postindustrial society and has achieved 77% of the population to be urbanized. There is an increase in
manufacturing and tertiary sectors of the economy, which is what is leading to modernizing the
population. Niagara Falls have three different waterfalls and each is unique to the fitting names, The
Horseshoe Fall, American Fall and The Bridal Veil. Every Fall flows into the Niagara River filling the
river with 150,000 gallons for water. The Horseshoe Fall is in the shape of a horseshoe and is split in
half on the Canadian border and the American border by Goat Island. The Horseshoe Fall has nine
times more water than the American Falls and makes up 90% of Niagara River. It stands at 167 feet
tall and is 2, 700 feet wide in a horseshoe shape. The American Fall and is located in America and is in
the state of New York. This Fall is 110 feet tall and 950 feet in width. This Fall shares its location with
The Bridal Veil also in the state of New York. The Bridal Veil is 181 feet from land to top and 56 feet
wide. In 1678 the first sighting of the Falls was by Father Louis Hennepin, he was sent on a French
expedition. Hennepin published a book called A

Changes And Continuities In The Foraging Era
6. Analyze changes and continuities (i.e. consistencies) in the way human societies are structured
(think social classes). Human societies throughout time have been structured by people s roles in
society and wealth. In the Foraging Era, society only consisted of your kin, as hierarchies were based
on gender, age, experience, and respect within the family. Differences in roles during this time period
didn t create hierarchical relations as human relationships were more personal rather than hierarchical.
People didn t need the institutionalized structures of modern society, which were designed to regulate
relationships between strangers (page 20). In the Agrarian Era, productivity rose, leading to stored
surpluses, which allowed communities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Human society became multilayered as some groups began to specialize in exploiting other people
(page 45 46). As communities grew larger, people had to find new ways of defining their relationships
with neighbors, and determine who had access to resources, and who could administer justice,
organize warfare, trade, and religious worship. Communities had to find ways of regulating exchanges
between persons whose interests and needs were diverse. The simple rules of kinship had to be
supplemented with more elaborate rules regulating behavior between people whose contacts were
more fleeting and less personal. Large building projects and organizing warfare required new types of
leadership. This led to the creation of institutionalized political and economic hierarchies with wealthy
rulers, priests, and merchants on one end and slaves at the other end. Gender hierarchies may have
arisen because the success of every household depended on bearing as much children as possible, so
women usually had less opportunities to take specialized roles, some of which may have brought
wealth and power. Men claimed natural superiority based on their role in power structures, and women
were increasingly defined by their role within the household and to men, thus the rise

A Comparison Of Identity Crisis
Personal Reactions: I agree with Mr. Erik Erikson when he said Everybody has heard of identity crisis
and it arouses a mixture of curiosity, mirth, and discomfort which yet promises, by the very play on
the word crisis, not to turn out to be something quite as fatal as it sounds . When I hear the word crisis
I think the worse depending on the situation as an example mid life crisis. I see someone who is in a
middle age group but they not considered an elderly person along with them not being considered a
young person. I think of this person seeing themselves as being old and doing stuff to help them feel
younger by wearing clothes that the younger people wear, change their hair color, buy a sports car,
buy a motorcycle, go to the clubs, and hangout with younger people. Some people feel like they didn t
accomplish enough stuff by this particular age and try to change that by doing those things to help
them feel better with their accomplishments in life. I agree with Mr. Erik Erikson when he described
the patients who was in the war being shellshocked, nor becomes malingerers, but had through the
exigencies of war lost a sense of personal sameness and historical continuity . I know a lot of people
who say their love ones that returned from the war came back as a different person. Their love ones
suffered from paranoia and have problems with adjusting to the civilian life due to their traumatic
experiences in the war. They battle with trying to figure out what is real and

Comparison Of John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
Of Mice and Men is a film about companionship and compassion. The combination of superb sound,
cinematography, and the story makes Of Mice and Men an excellent movie. This film is about two

George is his caretaker.George and Lennie travel to each job together. This is an overall great film.
The film starts a suspensefully with a woman running in a ripped red dress. There is eery music to set

Hawthorne’s Use of Allegory
The Minister s Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a short story that was first published in the 1836
edition of the Token and Atlantic Souvenir and reappeared over time in Twice Told Tales, a collection
of short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The short story narrates the events that follow Reverend Mr.
Hooper s decision to start wearing a black veil that obscures his full face, except for his mouth and
chin. Mr. Hooper simply arrives one day at the meeting house wearing the semi transparent black veil
and refuses from that moment on to take it off, which leads to the loss of his fiancée and isolation
from the world. Mr. Hooper even goes as far as to insist on burial in the black veil. Yet, what is crucial
to note are Mr. Hooper s last ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This particular idea serves to underscore even further the hypocrisy of human nature and emphasize
the ironic aspects of the short story.
The themes of the story serve to explicate the universal nature of all human beings. These themes
include, for example, shame, guilt, the nature of sinning and morality. With regard to shame, whilst it
is true that the veil covers Mr. Hooper s face, it does at the same time expose the nature of sin as one
embedded deep inside humans. In other words, the veil exposes the sin existent in the world which
makes the townspeople grow more and more uncomfortable. These feelings of discomfort are thus the
result of being faced with the shame within. The more one has learned to ignore the sense of shame at
the sins committed, and the darkness surrounded by, the more he or she is incapable of facing Mr.
Hooper. This leads the discussion to the second theme in the short story: guilt s hidden nature. Indeed,
most townspeople are faced with guilt suppressed upon looking at Mr. Hooper as they have never had
to face a physical form of their guilt. However, Mr. Hooper s didactic usage of the veil serves as a
constant reminder of that which is rather forgotten: sins committed. Using this as a reason, many of
the townspeople chose to ignore Mr. Hooper instead of facing their own veils. However, the Reverend
convinces the townspeople that everyone shares sins no matter what attempt is made to

Professor Edward G. look
Abstract In this laboratory session, I determined the concentration of p xylene and m xylene in two
unknown samples, using o xylene as an internal standard. The analysis was done using Fourier
Transform Infrared spectrometry. The peak wavelengths of the three isomers were determined, and
standard curves were constructed from the ratio of the absorbance of the characteristic peaks. The ratio
of the concentrations was determined from the Least Square fitting of the data.
Introduction
Para xylene belongs to a family of aromatic hydrocarbons of industrial importance and can be
polymerized to obtain parylene or as a starting point to the synthesis of polyethylene terephthalate,
among other uses. The ability to measure and control its concentration in equilibrium with its o and m
isomers is therefore of great importance (Fig. 1).
For quantitative purposes internal standard method is of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on Youth Culture
Essay on Youth Culture
The 60 s and 70 s saw the rise of youth culture. Youth culture can be seen as a particular pattern of
beliefs, values, symbols and activities that a group of young people are seen to share.
Along with the rise of youth culture came the theories developed on it. The theories developed in the
60 s were mainly functionalism. Functionalists believe that society or a social structure is like a
biological structure and that all social institutions function for the survival of society. As social
structures change by becoming more complex, social institutions change by becoming more
specialised. Functionalists, therefore, believe youth culture has a social function; they see it as young
people solving there shared ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Functionalists like Eisenstadt explain social institutions in terms of social problems and cultural
solutions. The youth problem lies in young peoples marginal status, youth culture eases the resulting
anxieties and uncertainties. His argument is that in meeting young peoples needs, youth culture has the
general function of smoothing the transition from child to adult. He believes that the most important
function for its members was emotional and providing young people with a set of relationships, (peer
groups.) The most important point for Eisenstadt is not that some young people become deviants but
that even the most deviant of youths become normal adults. He saw youth culture not as a political
rebellion but as an essential problem solving social function.
Eisenstadts argument is a general argument. It refers to the transition that faces all young people in
industrial society but not all young people are the same. He didn t take into account that growing up
middle class is different to growing up working class and that growing up male is different to growing
up female. Also, he was explaining youth culture in a time of relative affluence and optimism,
growing up was not particularly problematic in the 1950 s.
In the 1970 s the strongly Marxist influenced CCCS related class to youth subcultures. They argued
that youth styles were a reflection of the economic system and its related class relations. They claimed

Dylan Thomas To An Athlete Dying Young
How do most people, in general, feel about death? Are they calm, scared, indifferent? In Dylan
Thomas poem, Do not go gentle into that good night and A.E Housman s poem, To An Athlete Dying
Young the poets use literary devices to portray their different perspectives on death. In Thomas poem,
he creates a sense of injustice and anger towards the perceived death of his father. Housman, on the
other hand, has a more serene outlook on the event even though it still depicts sadness.
The metaphors used in Thomas poem show his resistance and rage on accepting his father s death.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light (Thomas l.3). is an example of just how much he needs his
father to fight, if not for himself then for Thomas. When he says,

The Secession Of The United States
In November, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected U.S. President with only 40 per cent of the popular
vote. South Carolina had threatened to secede from the Union if Lincoln won the election. The state
made good their threat by seceding from the Union on December 20, 1860. Mississippi and Florida
followed in early January, 1861. The Alabama State Legislature directed Governor A. B. Moore to call
a state convention in Montgomery on January 7, 1861, to debate the question of secession from the
Union. On January 11, after four days of hot debate, an ordinance of secession was adopted by a vote
of 61 39 and Alabama became the fourth state to secede from the Union. The two delegates from
Lauderdale County voted against secession as did most of the delegates from North Alabama.
Anticipating secession, several counties in North Alabama, East Tennessee, North Georgia, and North
Mississippi talked of forming a neutral state called Nickajack if secession passed. Nothing came of the
talk. However thousands of Alabamians, mostly from the northern counties, enlisted in the Union
Army. There were six white Union regiments raised in Alabama: 1st Alabama Cavalry, 1st Heavy
Artillery Battery, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Infantry Regiments. Many others left the state to join

Tortilla Sun Character Analysis
Many people today have their own ideas and thoughts, these thoughts and ideas produce multiple
points of view. These points of view can clash and lead people to disagree with each other. This is
shown in the fictional passages Confetti Girl by Diana Lopez, and Tortilla Sun by Jennifer Cervantes.
The main character in Confetti Girl disagree with her father on multiple topics. From her english class,
to her misunderstanding her father s main intentions. However, Izzy from Tortilla Sun experiences the
same misunderstanding with her mother. Both of these characters have their own point of views and
their own misunderstanding of their parents. Many emotions are expressed from both characters,
because of those misunderstandings. These are just some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There would be tensions created between Izzy and her mother, Izzy sees her mother as leaving for
herself, but however her mother is leaving so she could be able to finish her studies and research.
Which could of course lead her to better job opportunities for Izzy s mother and a more successful
future for Izzy. Because of Izzy s misunderstanding, there is tension created between the both of them.
This is shown in paragraph 34. Izzy replies with Opportunity? For me? Or for you? . This shows that
Izzy is unclear of the opportunities they both will receive if her mother goes out to finish her research.
This of course leads to tension created between both of the characters. Another way this is shown is in
paragraph 45. The text shows I think you re going to like the village. Her voice became muffled now,
like her mouth was pressed right up the against the door, (Paragraph 45). This part of paragraph 45
show how the tension between the 2 characters lead to them having conflicts that are draining and
saddening. The difference in the point of view from Izzy and her mother create this tension. This
shows that Izzy misunderstands her mother and because of this, tension is created between the both of
them. These misunderstanding leads to both of the characters not seeing eye to an eye. Which leads to
many conflicts throughout both

vacancy rate of less than 20%, as well as current or pending capital improvements. After careful
planning, outreach to the property and business owners, community residents, and the public, as well
as conducting a needs assessment survey (Appendix C), a District Plan is drafted which serves as a
business plan for the BID and is submitted the City Planning Commission for an approval. The
District Plan is the most important document in the process as it includes the services and
improvements the BID plans to provide, as well as the first year s budget, and the assessment formula
used to compute the amount each property owner is to pay. SBS recommends that a BID should revisit
their district plan approximately every five years or when major changes are needed . After the District
Plan has been submitted to City Planning Commission, the legislative authorization process follows
legally mandated timeline and can take from nine to twelve months to complete. At the end the City
Council adopts the BID Local Law and the Mayor signs it.

City of New York, which then disburses it to the BID. The assessment amount, if any, depends on the

George Etienne Cartier s Legacy And Contributions
For my heritage fair I decided to research George Etienne Cartier, who if you haven t heard about was
a lawyer, rebel, politician and railway promoter whose contributions to Confederation were on the
same level as figures like John A. Macdonald and George Brown(Sweeny). If you haven t heard of
any of these people, then don t worry I ll be going into length on all of them. Furthermore, if you were
wondering why I chose this topic to research, I would truthfully tell you that the only reason I chose
George Etienne Cartier was because he was as good a topic as anything else, so personally I didn t
care about the topic. But as I put more research into the topic I came to realize just how important
George Etienne Cartier was to Canada. Not just in his efforts towards Confederation but also the work
he put into preserving French culture and identity in Canada to railway development. Of course this
isn t as exciting as many other topics, but without George Cartier s legacy and contributions we would
most likely not be where we are today. In this report I will be covering the life of George Etienne
Cartier, including his early life, background, political life before and after Confederation.
Early Life and Rebellions
How did George Etienne Cartier grow up?
George Etienne Cartier was born on September 6th 1814 in Saint Antoine sur Richelieu to parents

William Mckinley Campaign Film Analysis
The election of 1896 was the year William McKinley launched the first campaign film. McKinley s
campaign ad was a re enactment of his nomination announcement as he stood in front of a room full of
supporters. Once McKinley became president, his film sparked the beginning of scheduled
announcement known today as The State of the Union. Most believed McKinley s campaign film
helped with his presidential win against Democratic nominee William Jennings Bryan. Later,
McKinley would serve four years as president before his assassination in 1901 at the Pan American
Exposition. Today, campaign ads are one of the most expensive parts of campaigns and effective with
voters that are unreachable on social media. However, social media allows candidates to place ...

American Colonization And The Effects of the American Revolution
By the late 1400 s all of Europe was looking for one thing, a quicker trade route to Asia. Columbus in
his quest to find that discovered the Carribean Islands, bringing back new goods and a thirst for more.
With his return many countries sent out their own explorers. Spain spread out their expeditions which
lead them to new teritiores and acquiring gold and silver. Spain was the first to colonize in the area
and with doing so they set a standard the would be followed later on for the American colonies. They

Cross Cultural Communication And The Classroom
Cross Cultural Communication The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one
persists in trying to adapt the world to himself [Shaw]. Internalize this quote begs the question, can
education make a difference? This paper will examine in detail cross cultural communication, a
cultural issue that educators must seek to address in the delivery of teaching to English Language
Learners (ELL) classroom. Moreover, the ensuing paper will analyze the problems of cross cultural
communication in the classroom of ELL; this will be followed by its relation to the theories and
application of those methods. On the other hand, the writer will outline the effects of cross cultural
communication, and how these effects can be changed into a social value through education.
Examination of Cross Cultural Communication in the Classroom Instruction and assessment are
delivered through the medium of communication, while resolution of behavioral problems involve
communication. Significantly, in a classroom with ELL/LEP learners, the job of the teacher is not only
to teach but to be a mediator between the different cultures represented in the class. What teachers
must realize is that an environment that is filled with cultural tension does not lend itself to learning.
Therefore, administrators/educators must recognize cross cultural communication as essential in the
learning environment. Collier and Powell (1990), posits ethnic background influences the way

question Do people behave differently when they are lying compared with when they are telling the
truth? They went ahead and combined results of 1,338 estimates and found 158 cues to deception were
reported in the study. The results showed that in some ways, the people that were lying were less
forthcoming than the truth tellers. The liars also told less compelling tales when asked to explain their
reasoning. Cues were also more visible when people were motivated to succeed, especially when the
motivations were about themselves rather than money or materialistic objects. This study had also

Other researcher also went on to explain the specifics of deception as the subject broadened.
Zuckerman in 1981 found that liars might also be experiencing a greater sense of arousal than the truth
tellers. This was noted by the liars having greater pupil dilation, more frequent speech, increased
blinking, as well as a high pitched voice. In 1985 Ekman wrote an article explaining the role of
emotions that are involved in deception. When Ekman was able to understand the emotions the liars
were experiencing, Ekman stated that it s possible to predict the behaviors of a liar that differ from
truth tellers. He gave an example by showing that the cues that involve fear like speech errors, faster
and louder speech, and high pitch gave a greater chance of a liar being pointed out. Ekman also found
that liars who felt guilt lying to someone they could trust showed certain behavioral indicators of guilt.
In De Paulo s study she explains that one of the main reasons that it is more difficult to lie than to tell
the truth is because when someone is lying they have to fabricate a new and never experienced
situation so the probability of error goes way up compared to when someone is telling the truth all
they have to do is simply tell the story as is. Liars are also more likely to fail when they know less

The Problem Of Poverty And Homelessness
I argue that Charlie is wrong in this thinking. The notion that he is raising is exactly the type of selfish
and closed minded way of thinking that sets back the progress in solving the issue of poverty and
homelessness in America. In fact, a study taken in 2015 gathered that with more interaction and
willingness to help the homeless, the more empathy and compassion is gained for them, later resulting
in a larger contribution from society creating a social change. I obtained this information based on a
survey taken by Lindsay Phillips, a physiologist, that took it upon herself to ask working,
undergraduate college students to describe their perceptions of homelessness, willingness to get
involved, and ideas towards a solution. In this survey it is found that a good majority of people do see
a problem of homelessness and poverty, and are willing to do their part in order to help. In addition, it
was found that by volunteering to make a change, the stigma of social distance between the homeless
and the general public gradually shortens. This is said in the survey report stating, Findings seem to
indicate that it may be possible to demonstrate stigma toward a population, yet still have a desire to
help that population (as indicated by participants seeing the validity of a number of solutions to
homelessness and because 82.61% of participants expressed willingness to volunteer to help this

Theme Of Power In Paul And Virginia
Paul and Virginia by Bernardin De Saint Pierre tells the story of two children raised in a seemingly
idyllic society, Paul and Virginia. Raised by two mothers, far away from Europe, it is assumed that the
children have been raised in an idyllic society, far from the influence of European society and its
ideals. However, as the book progresses, it can be noticed that the ideals of Europe have followed the
children and their family to the island, especially when it comes to aspects of power. Throughout the
novel, it is presented that the European family and Paul carry most of the power, based on various
actions. However, what is perhaps some of the most unexpected characters, Mary and Domingo, and
the other slaves on the island, carry the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To begin, as mentioned, most of Domingo s and Mary s powers lie within their ability to provide for
Madame de la Tour s and Margaret s family, and in Domingo s case, his ability to also save the family.
This would have been in line with the cultural and social norms at the time of the novel s conception,
as slaves were a common thing at the time. As slaves, their common duty would have been to provide
for their masters. In conclusion, Paul and Virginia showcases an idyllic society in which the main
characters are raised without the preconceptions of European society, or at least so it seems on the
surface. In reality, as the novel progresses, it becomes obvious that those preconceptions have made
their way to Mauritius, especially in the power dynamics of the novel. While it is presented that the
main characters possess a majority of the power, it is the care of their slaves, Mary and Domingo, that
allows the family to survive on the island, thus giving them most of the

Rhetorical Analysis The article We Are Training Our Kids to Kill by David Grossman is an attempt at
explaining the effect of mass media on our children as far as violence and the impacting role it plays.
Grossman, a self entitled world traveler and an expert in the field of killology uses the rhetorical
aspects of ethos, pathos, and logos to get his point across. Regardless of the fact that Grossman did
build some credibility for himself, used reasoning, emotion, and some facts to support his opinion, he
did not use them in a very effective way. I am going to label this article as ineffective. The first reason
I m ruling Grossman s writing as ineffective is because he seemed to contradict himself throughout his

After Goldman makes this statement he doesn t go on to talk about the restrictions that parents or our
society in general have or should have on movies, video games, or other forms of media. My third and
final reason to show how Grossman s article is ineffective is that for a lot of the examples he used, he
had no legitimate proof or substance to support them, or make a connection to his arguments. One of
Grossman s statements that has no proof providing justification is In reality, the average man would
load his musket and bring it to his shoulder, but he could not bring himself to kill. He would be brave,
he would stand shoulder to shoulder, he would do what he was trained to do; but at the moment of
truth, he could not bring himself to pull the trigger. Here Grossman is talking about soldiers in the
Civil War. This statement was all assumed. There was no journal, or historian quoted, or any other
credible knowledge suppressed to support this. The author talks like he knows the military realities
and that may be the case, but I m sure that common sense can tell the reader that Grossman does not
have the knowledge to have this information in his article without substance behind it. The military
realities that the author knows are much more modern and contemporary than those of the Civil War.
Times change and so does the military along with it. Over all,

Army Regional Alignment of Forces (RAF) Being at war for the last 14 years the Army now finds it
has the best trained and the most combat experienced force in its history. However, the intense focus
on a relatively small number of mission sets such as irregular warfare detracts resources for the other

of Staff of the Army General Ray Odierno directed implementation of the Regional Alignment of

World War 1-Who Was to Blame
World War 1 who was to blame? World War 1 broke out when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of
Austria was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip in 1914, whose organization implicated members of
Serbian military. For this reason, the Austro Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia, supported by
Germany. This triggered chain reaction, nations in Europe declaring war on the other nations, which,
with in a month, caused Europe to turn into a battlefield. The Great War was ended, when the Treaty
of Versailles and several other treaties were signed in 1919 and Germany was fully held responsible
for causing the war. But it is not justified, that Germany, and Germany alone, should be held
responsible for the outbreak of the war, even though her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the British did not want German ships in the Mediterranean, and was afraid that Germany would going
to build a fort on the coast, another conference was called, and France takes over Morocco, but as
compensation, Germany was given land in central Africa. This creates animosity in Germany towards
the French and the British, because Germany lost against the French, failing to protect Morocco.
German imperialism, the Kaiser s ambition of over sea empire, and nationalism, the thought of
Germany being the world power, has caused militarism, expansion of her army and navy. The three
elements were the causes of World War 1 but what has made the war inevitable was the alliance
system that existed at that time. The alliance system, which at that time was used to prevent any war,
has caused this huge war when Austro Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia, and making it
ineluctable. This proves that the blank cheque that was given to Austria was reasonable, for Austria
was Germany s ally, and as allies, they should support each other. The same was done with Russia
with countries in the Balkans. As Austro Hungarian Empire declares war on Serbia, Russia mobilizes

Metro Rail Services At Kochi City
1 Executive Summary
This project discusses the Metro rail services to be build in Kochi city. Rapid urbanization and intense
commercial developments in the recent past have resulted in steep rise in travel demand, putting
Kochi s transport infrastructure to stress. With mega projects such as SMART CITY, INFO PARK ,
FASHION CITY and Vellarpadam Container Terminal , etc. on the anvil, travel demand is expected to
shoot up, strengthening the need for augmenting the transport infrastructure in Kochi region. In the
absence of a mass transport system, there has been a steep increase in the number of personalized
motor vehicles in GCDA area. The number of registered motor vehicles in this area was 68,271 in
1987 and it grown to 4,46,959 in the year 2003. 64% of these vehicles are two wheelers. This large
number of motor vehicles is resulting in rise in air pollution, increased number of road accidents, and
slowing down of average vehicular speeds.
Peak hour traffic demand on Alwaye Petta Corridor has been assessed as 13,681 phpdt for the year
2015 and this is likely to increase 21065 phpdt by the year 2025. Road based public transport,
therefore, can not meet this demand. There is an urgent need to introduce a light Metro system in the
city to provide fast, safe, economic, and environment friendly mode for mass movement of
passengers. Carrying capacity of Light Metro System is upto 25,000 phpdt, which will be adequate to
take care of the traffic problems for Greater Cochin

Ignorance In Flowers For Algernon
The novel Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is an excellent written novel that has deep meaning
to it. The novel is about a 32 year old man named Charlie Gordon who is mentally disabled, and he
goes through a medical procedure which enhances his knowledge. Throughout the novel, all Charlie
wants to be is normal. Charlie just wants to fit in, have friends, and make his parents proud. Charlie is
the first person ever to go through this surgery so he is going through a journey that only he has

a mouse called Algernon and the things that happen to Algernon usually end up happening to Charlie.
As Charlie s intelligence increases he goes through struggles that affect his relationships and his views
on life. Charlie experiences and remembers things that have happened previously in his life and his
ultimate goal is to learn his past. At the end of the novel Charlie starts to lose his intelligence which
results in his ultimate demise. Depending on the situation, ignorance is bliss, however, there are other
scenarios where knowing the whole truth regardless of the consequences is also beneficial.

owned the ship. White Star Line owned both the Titanic and its sister ship, the Olympic. The ... Show

canceled his trip on the Titanic just a few days before its voyage, saying that it was due to sickness. A
short while after he was photographed in France with his wife in seemingly good health. One theory is
that he was informed about the scheduled crash and found another way to his destination. One where

  • 2. Marcel Derain The Burning Of Houses The way that the colors are used within The Houses of Parliament are very expressive way while the Burning of Houses, the colors are used in a more realistic manner. André Derain uses the concept of warm and cool colors in specific areas of the painting; for example he uses warm colors within the sky and the buildings and the bridge and the people are in cooler colors. The buildings go in a transition from one end to the other startin with a scarlet red and transfers ( not really in a blended way ) into a yellow tone. You also see a more faded yellow and red more towards the ground as is up to the top of the buildings. The clouds are rather white with a tint of yellow and red within them which probably shows that they re the same temperature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ironically warm colors are red, orange, and yellow and cool colors are blue, green, and purple; Although this is true it seems to be quite backwards in this painting. Here in this painting I believe that the day is cooler day as if it were autumn at that time because green an blue are cooler colors; Also the buildOnes maybe warmer because inside it s always warmer, however noticing the taller building is more green which shows that it s more cooler up top. Now I m the Burning Houses of the Lords the colors are used exactly how they would be thought of because the name burning houses clearly presents itself within the image. You can tell the warm colors from the cool colors since the flames are showing the colors red, orange, and yellow showing that the temperature is very hot as fire always is. I also see water and the sky within this image as well and they pose to be cooler colors which appear to be blues, greens and other colors that are in the cool state. This painting clearly shows where different temperatures are as apposed to André Derains painting where you more have to guess where the temperature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Pilot Galavant Character Galavant fails Sid because he is too unmotivated to teach his squire what he needs to progress. In the beginning of the episode Pilot, Sid has to drag Galavant out of bed while he complains about Sid saying Madalena s name. Galavant is brokenhearted and drunk instead of teaching Sid, which hinders Sid s quest because a squire is someone in training to become a knight. Galavant s job as Sid s mentor is to teach him everything he needs to know about knighthood. However, Galavant occupies himself with being heartbroken because he lost the love of his life, which means that he is not taking jobs or fulfilling knightly duties. If Sid cannot accompany Galavant on quests and learn what he needs to know, he will never become a knight because Galavant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the wedding scene of Pilot, the camera pans to Madalena multiple times as Galavant speaks. Her facial expressions show that she is realizing she actually has options that don t include Galavant, a sign that she lacked agency in her relationship with him. By finally being in a position where she can use her agency instead of being spoken for by Galavant, Madalena says what she wants to do and is not overshadowed by him. Because he continuously tried to speak for Madalena, Galavant failed her by believing that just because he always thinks about Madalena and loves her she will automatically come back to him like he is the only objective she has in life. Galavant never giving Madalena a chance to speak for herself is a hindrance to her quest for power and his own quest for self knowledge. Also in the wedding scene of Pilot, Galavant speaks for Madalena during his monologue, which shows that even though he loves her, Galavant is inconsiderate of the fact she is her own person and not just his lady love. As soon as Galavant interrupts the wedding between King Richard and Madalena, he starts talking about himself and how he is certain Madalena will choose him because she loves him as much as he loves her. By expecting her to come back like an object that belongs to him, he is not allowing her to have free will and use her agency. By speaking for Madalena and not letting her make ... • 4. Wang Lung s In The Good Earth In the Good Earth, the book s setting of early 20th century China helps to enforce the theme of the book, which, in my opinion based on the book, is You can t just accept the hand that life deals you. That s exactly what Wang Lung does. In this book Wang is a farmer in 20th century China. He doesn t choose this profession, it s the only thing he knows how to do. In China, the farming can be... unpredictable, rivers may flood one year and run dry the next, swarms of locusts may show up or rebel soldiers may burn the fields. The farmers had to deal with all of this and more, many of the farmers (i.e. Ching) would say Heaven wills it (chapter 27, paragraph 8), but Wang Lung would have none of it, he would curse the gods and stand in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the fact that women weren t viewed as equals during that time period, Wang Lung treats his wife, O Lan, like a slave more than anything else. Regardless of this fact, O lan endures the hardships of being a farmer s wife and living as a poor woman in early 20th century China. That was one of the more important messages that this book was trying to convey. Pearl Buck wrote this book at the tail end of the First Wave American Feminism movement and O lan was a strong female character designed to support the idea that women are equals and really should be treated thusly. A prime example of this is when O Lan is dying and cannot move from her bed, Wang Lung admits that he would sell his land to keep her healthy, even though for the majority of the book he does not treat her well. Although this isn t mentioned directly, he comes to realize that the main reason for his success after he returned from the south was due to a decision that O Lan made. She stole jewels from a rich family while they were in the southern city and that led to Wang Lung s influx of money which, in turn, allowed him to become as rich as he was at the time of O Lan s ... The first lesson begins with the first chapter of the lesson and the introduction of visualization as a strategy to aid in comprehension. This flows nicely into the next day because the students will follow the same read then work pattern in the lesson. The second lesson focuses on character actions and reactions through the reading of the first two chapters. Students can use what they visualized in lesson one to help them with character actions. The third lesson builds on the character knowledge by delving deeper into the specific character traits that each character possesses. The ... Before children would work on assignments alone, the teacher would model exactly what is expected of them, and keep examples of what was modeled during the lesson so the students could look back to it if they need to. Read alouds (Cooper, 2015, p. 37) were used in this lesson to really help children to focus on certain topics of the text. Sometimes the best way to help children understand a particular piece of text is to read it aloud to them and discuss it with them (Cooper, 2015, p. 37). Think alouds (Cooper, 2015, p. 30) were incorporated into this lesson when trying to explain how to use the strategy of character mapping. Think alouds are a great way to explain to students how to use a specific skill or strategy so that they can have a better time comprehending it. Semantic maps (Cooper, 2015, p.83) were used in this lesson for brainstorming ideas from the text to later reference when making illustrations and creating short responses to the text. This strategy is also a great tool for second language learners because it helps to narrow down the specific parts in the text to help create more details of the topic being taught. • 6. Satan In John Milton s Paradise Lost When hearing the word Satan , people often think of a red man with horns, a pitchfork, and a tail; he is often visualized in the pits of the underworld surrounded by flames. Why does society picture him this way? Some may say Because he is evil or Because he fell from heaven , but people mostly believe this because this is what they were taught. Satan is a figure appearing in many texts of religion as someone who brings evil and temptation. He is known as the deceiver who leads humanity astray, like he deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. Some religious groups teach that he originated as an angel, or something like an angel, who used to possess great piety and beauty, but fell because of pride. He seduced humanity into the ways of falsehood and sin, and has power in the fallen world; in other groups, Satan, also called the devil, is described as a more malevolent entity opposed to God. Although Satan is generally viewed as having negative characteristics, some groups have very different beliefs. Throughout literature, Satan has been represented as the evillest entity to ever have existed, but Satan is not truly as evil as he is portrayed because he is more of an anti hero or Byronic Hero in texts such as John Milton s Paradise Lost as well as other academic scholars arguments, rather than being a complete antagonist. According to the Christian s perspective of the Bible, before Adam and Eve, God made the angels. The most beautiful angel God made was named ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Descriptive Essay On Niagara Falls Niagara Falls, Canada Niagara Falls is my favorite vacation destination. The history and museums have been interesting and kept me wondering about the people that have gone over the Niagara Falls for years. Why did they do it? There have been many people to go over the Falls, some survived and some did not. People take it as a challenge or even just for fun. Many believe that they may come out being rich, they either have a great experience and are able to say they survived the Niagara Falls or they perish to their death. It is against the law to go over the Falls and you will be charged, thousands. I love to watch documentaries on Niagara Falls and hear about the people that have gone over the Falls and survived. Niagara Falls is in North America, it is in Ontario, Canada and is on the border of America and Canada. Canada is in the Era of Global capitalism as of 2017, this means that they are in a transitional state with open ended evolution of capital. The Falls are a great source of electricity for Ontario. Canada is moving into the postindustrial society and has achieved 77% of the population to be urbanized. There is an increase in manufacturing and tertiary sectors of the economy, which is what is leading to modernizing the population. Niagara Falls have three different waterfalls and each is unique to the fitting names, The Horseshoe Fall, American Fall and The Bridal Veil. Every Fall flows into the Niagara River filling the river with 150,000 gallons for water. The Horseshoe Fall is in the shape of a horseshoe and is split in half on the Canadian border and the American border by Goat Island. The Horseshoe Fall has nine times more water than the American Falls and makes up 90% of Niagara River. It stands at 167 feet tall and is 2, 700 feet wide in a horseshoe shape. The American Fall and is located in America and is in the state of New York. This Fall is 110 feet tall and 950 feet in width. This Fall shares its location with The Bridal Veil also in the state of New York. The Bridal Veil is 181 feet from land to top and 56 feet wide. • 8. Changes And Continuities In The Foraging Era 6. Analyze changes and continuities (i.e. consistencies) in the way human societies are structured (think social classes). Human societies throughout time have been structured by people s roles in society and wealth. In the Foraging Era, society only consisted of your kin, as hierarchies were based on gender, age, experience, and respect within the family. Differences in roles during this time period didn t create hierarchical relations as human relationships were more personal rather than hierarchical. People didn t need the institutionalized structures of modern society, which were designed to regulate relationships between strangers (page 20). In the Agrarian Era, productivity rose, leading to stored surpluses, which allowed communities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Human society became multilayered as some groups began to specialize in exploiting other people (page 45 46). As communities grew larger, people had to find new ways of defining their relationships with neighbors, and determine who had access to resources, and who could administer justice, organize warfare, trade, and religious worship. Communities had to find ways of regulating exchanges between persons whose interests and needs were diverse. The simple rules of kinship had to be supplemented with more elaborate rules regulating behavior between people whose contacts were more fleeting and less personal. Large building projects and organizing warfare required new types of leadership. This led to the creation of institutionalized political and economic hierarchies with wealthy rulers, priests, and merchants on one end and slaves at the other end. Gender hierarchies may have arisen because the success of every household depended on bearing as much children as possible, so women usually had less opportunities to take specialized roles, some of which may have brought wealth and power. Men claimed natural superiority based on their role in power structures, and women were increasingly defined by their role within the household and to men, thus the rise ... • 9. A Comparison Of Identity Crisis Personal Reactions: I agree with Mr. Erik Erikson when he said Everybody has heard of identity crisis and it arouses a mixture of curiosity, mirth, and discomfort which yet promises, by the very play on the word crisis, not to turn out to be something quite as fatal as it sounds . When I hear the word crisis I think the worse depending on the situation as an example mid life crisis. I see someone who is in a middle age group but they not considered an elderly person along with them not being considered a young person. I think of this person seeing themselves as being old and doing stuff to help them feel younger by wearing clothes that the younger people wear, change their hair color, buy a sports car, buy a motorcycle, go to the clubs, and hangout with younger people. Some people feel like they didn t accomplish enough stuff by this particular age and try to change that by doing those things to help them feel better with their accomplishments in life. I agree with Mr. Erik Erikson when he described the patients who was in the war being shellshocked, nor becomes malingerers, but had through the exigencies of war lost a sense of personal sameness and historical continuity . I know a lot of people who say their love ones that returned from the war came back as a different person. Hawthorne’s Use of Allegory The Minister s Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a short story that was first published in the 1836 edition of the Token and Atlantic Souvenir and reappeared over time in Twice Told Tales, a collection of short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The short story narrates the events that follow Reverend Mr. Hooper s decision to start wearing a black veil that obscures his full face, except for his mouth and chin. Mr. Hooper simply arrives one day at the meeting house wearing the semi transparent black veil and refuses from that moment on to take it off, which leads to the loss of his fiancée and isolation from the world. This particular idea serves to underscore even further the hypocrisy of human nature and emphasize the ironic aspects of the short story. The themes of the story serve to explicate the universal nature of all human beings. These themes include, for example, shame, guilt, the nature of sinning and morality. With regard to shame, whilst it is true that the veil covers Mr. Hooper s face, it does at the same time expose the nature of sin as one embedded deep inside humans. In other words, the veil exposes the sin existent in the world which makes the townspeople grow more and more uncomfortable. These feelings of discomfort are thus the result of being faced with the shame within. The more one has learned to ignore the sense of shame at the sins committed, and the darkness surrounded by, the more he or she is incapable of facing Mr. Hooper. This leads the discussion to the second theme in the short story: guilt s hidden nature. Indeed, most townspeople are faced with guilt suppressed upon looking at Mr. Hooper as they have never had to face a physical form of their guilt. However, Mr. Hooper s didactic usage of the veil serves as a constant reminder of that which is rather forgotten: sins committed. The analysis was done using Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry. The peak wavelengths of the three isomers were determined, and standard curves were constructed from the ratio of the absorbance of the characteristic peaks. The ratio of the concentrations was determined from the Least Square fitting of the data. Introduction Para xylene belongs to a family of aromatic hydrocarbons of industrial importance and can be polymerized to obtain parylene or as a starting point to the synthesis of polyethylene terephthalate, among other uses. Functionalists believe that society or a social structure is like a biological structure and that all social institutions function for the survival of society. Functionalists like Eisenstadt explain social institutions in terms of social problems and cultural solutions. The youth problem lies in young peoples marginal status, youth culture eases the resulting anxieties and uncertainties. His argument is that in meeting young peoples needs, youth culture has the general function of smoothing the transition from child to adult. He believes that the most important function for its members was emotional and providing young people with a set of relationships, (peer groups.) The most important point for Eisenstadt is not that some young people become deviants but that even the most deviant of youths become normal adults. He saw youth culture not as a political rebellion but as an essential problem solving social function. Eisenstadts argument is a general argument. It refers to the transition that faces all young people in industrial society but not all young people are the same. He didn t take into account that growing up middle class is different to growing up working class and that growing up male is different to growing up female. Also, he was explaining youth culture in a time of relative affluence and optimism, growing up was not particularly problematic in the 1950 s. Critical Critique Of The Liars Juan Ruiz Psych 30 Cassens Important Writing Critique In this article DePaulo and her fellow researchers try to answer the question Do people behave differently when they are lying compared with when they are telling the truth? They went ahead and combined results of 1,338 estimates and found 158 cues to deception were reported in the study. The results showed that in some ways, the people that were lying were less forthcoming than the truth tellers. The liars also told less compelling tales when asked to explain their reasoning. Cues were also more visible when people were motivated to succeed, especially when the motivations were about themselves rather than money or materialistic objects. Zuckerman in 1981 found that liars might also be experiencing a greater sense of arousal than the truth tellers. This was noted by the liars having greater pupil dilation, more frequent speech, increased blinking, as well as a high pitched voice. In 1985 Ekman wrote an article explaining the role of emotions that are involved in deception. When Ekman was able to understand the emotions the liars were experiencing, Ekman stated that it s possible to predict the behaviors of a liar that differ from truth tellers. He gave an example by showing that the cues that involve fear like speech errors, faster and louder speech, and high pitch gave a greater chance of a liar being pointed out. Ekman also found that liars who felt guilt lying to someone they could trust showed certain behavioral indicators of guilt. In De Paulo s study she explains that one of the main reasons that it is more difficult to lie than to tell the truth is because when someone is lying they have to fabricate a new and never experienced situation so the probability of error goes way up compared to when someone is telling the truth all they have to do is simply tell the story as is. • 28. The Problem Of Poverty And Homelessness I argue that Charlie is wrong in this thinking. The notion that he is raising is exactly the type of selfish and closed minded way of thinking that sets back the progress in solving the issue of poverty and homelessness in America. In fact, a study taken in 2015 gathered that with more interaction and willingness to help the homeless, the more empathy and compassion is gained for them, later resulting in a larger contribution from society creating a social change. I obtained this information based on a survey taken by Lindsay Phillips, a physiologist, that took it upon herself to ask working, undergraduate college students to describe their perceptions of homelessness, willingness to get involved, and ideas towards a solution. In this survey it is found that a good majority of people do see a problem of homelessness and poverty, and are willing to do their part in order to help. In addition, it was found that by volunteering to make a change, the stigma of social distance between the homeless and the general public gradually shortens. This is said in the survey report stating, Findings seem to indicate that it may be possible to demonstrate stigma toward a population, yet still have a desire to help that population (as indicated by participants seeing the validity of a number of solutions to homelessness and because 82.61% of participants expressed willingness to volunteer to help this population)...For example, results indicated that very few participants would remain ... • 29. Theme Of Power In Paul And Virginia Paul and Virginia by Bernardin De Saint Pierre tells the story of two children raised in a seemingly idyllic society, Paul and Virginia. Raised by two mothers, far away from Europe, it is assumed that the children have been raised in an idyllic society, far from the influence of European society and its ideals. However, as the book progresses, it can be noticed that the ideals of Europe have followed the children and their family to the island, especially when it comes to aspects of power. Throughout the novel, it is presented that the European family and Paul carry most of the power, based on various actions. However, what is perhaps some of the most unexpected characters, Mary and Domingo, and the other slaves on the island, carry the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To begin, as mentioned, most of Domingo s and Mary s powers lie within their ability to provide for Madame de la Tour s and Margaret s family, and in Domingo s case, his ability to also save the family. This would have been in line with the cultural and social norms at the time of the novel s conception, as slaves were a common thing at the time. As slaves, their common duty would have been to provide for their masters. In conclusion, Paul and Virginia showcases an idyllic society in which the main characters are raised without the preconceptions of European society, or at least so it seems on the surface. In reality, as the novel progresses, it becomes obvious that those preconceptions have made their way to Mauritius, especially in the power dynamics of the novel. • 30. rhetorical Essay Rhetorical Analysis The article We Are Training Our Kids to Kill by David Grossman is an attempt at explaining the effect of mass media on our children as far as violence and the impacting role it plays. Grossman, a self entitled world traveler and an expert in the field of killology uses the rhetorical aspects of ethos, pathos, and logos to get his point across. Regardless of the fact that Grossman did build some credibility for himself, used reasoning, emotion, and some facts to support his opinion, he did not use them in a very effective way. I am going to label this article as ineffective. The first reason I m ruling Grossman s writing as ineffective is because he seemed to contradict himself throughout his writing. The ... After Goldman makes this statement he doesn t go on to talk about the restrictions that parents or our society in general have or should have on movies, video games, or other forms of media. My third and final reason to show how Grossman s article is ineffective is that for a lot of the examples he used, he had no legitimate proof or substance to support them, or make a connection to his arguments. One of Grossman s statements that has no proof providing justification is In reality, the average man would load his musket and bring it to his shoulder, but he could not bring himself to kill. He would be brave, he would stand shoulder to shoulder, he would do what he was trained to do; but at the moment of truth, he could not bring himself to pull the trigger. Here Grossman is talking about soldiers in the Civil War. This statement was all assumed. There was no journal, or historian quoted, or any other credible knowledge suppressed to support this. The author talks like he knows the military realities and that may be the case, but I m sure that common sense can tell the reader that Grossman does not have the knowledge to have this information in his article without substance behind it. The military realities that the author knows are much more modern and contemporary than those of the Civil War. Times change and so does the military along with it. Over all, ... World War 1 broke out when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip in 1914, whose organization implicated members of Serbian military. For this reason, the Austro Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia, supported by Germany. This triggered chain reaction, nations in Europe declaring war on the other nations, which, with in a month, caused Europe to turn into a battlefield. The purpose of the study was to add to the scant research on the effects of TBI on prospective memory in children and adolescents. The authors were also interested in adding support to the existing theory that the prefrontal areas of the brain meditate prospective memory. (Ward et al., 2005) The authors were, for the purposes of this study, assuming that the brain s prefrontal regions are involved in prospective memory.
