Hedda Gabler’s Freedom and Repression as Understood...
This passage from the denouement Henrik Ibsen s play, Hedda Gabler, before Hedda s suicide,
is an illustration of the vulnerability and defeat of the impetuous and manipulative titular
character. Ibsen develops Hedda s character by uncovering details about the conflicts between
Hedda and the other characters, Judge Brack, Mrs Elvsted, and George Tesman which highlight
Hedda s transformation from an individualistic to despairing individual, conveying the theme of
freedom and repression in society. Ibsen uses the relationship and conflict between Hedda and
Brack to illustrate Hedda s struggle to assert her free will and power in a male dominated society.
The two characters are united as social equals who are members of the aristocracy as... Show more

Through this stage direction, Ibsen highlights the objectification of women. In many aspects,
George Tesman too does not see Hedda s full value as a person, and from the beginning of the
play, Ibsen makes this clear. Tesman adores rather than love his wife, proudly viewing her as an
object of adornment that makes several of his friends jealous. A scholar who is more devoted to
his work than his wife, Tesman spends more time with his books than his wife, even during their
honeymoon. In this passage, Ibsen further illustrates this objectification of women. Tesman turns
his head away from her because he believes there is nothing in the world (32) that Hedda can
help Tesman with; Hedda is merely an ornament and not of real use to Tesman. Ibsen s use of
stage direction that depicts Tesman turning his head after talking to Hedda both indicate Tesman
s rejection of Hedda as a valuable person and his obliviousness to Hedda and her desperate
situation. Tesman s imperceptiveness is further highlighted by Ibsen when Hedda imitates
Tesman s intonation (16). Also, Hedda s mimicking of Tesman, which is used earlier in the play
as a sign of her contempt, is also used here in this passage by Ibsen to portray Hedda s
desperation. That Hedda would turn to Tesman, a person she dislikes and views as beneath her, as
a means of escape, is a clear indication of her despondency and madness, which foreshadow her
ultimate act of despair suicide. Yet Tesman thoughtlessly

Analysis Of Susan Glaspell s Trifles Essay
In any form of writing, various literary elements come together to compose a thorough and
multifaceted work of literature. All the elements serve a distinct purpose; symbolism, for one, is
imperative in a literary work because it aids the reader in the overall comprehension of the
particular theme or multiple themes that a story is trying to convey. In Susan Glaspell s, Trifles,
she meticulously incorporates significant symbols that help the reader recognize and construe the
depth of the significance of the jarof fruit preserves, quilt, bird, and the bird cage. Things are not
always as insignificant as they appear to be, and Glaspell s play is a prime example of how
important it is to read between the lines. A central theme in Glaspell s play is gender obedience,
displayed seemingly by Mrs. Wright. Because the focus of Mrs. Wright s life, as a wife,
revolved around maintaining fruit preserves, we can conclude that her primary concern for the
state of the jar of preserves was more significant that the mere thought of frozen fruit. The jars of
fruit preserves were Mrs. Wright s escape and distraction; something she had control over and
something she could call her own. This is why the women understood why she would be so
concerned about her preserves even in the midst of a legal predicament. MRS. PETERS. [To the
other woman.] Oh, her fruit; it did freeze. [To the County Attorney] She worried about that when it
turned so cold. She said the fire d go out and her

Process Paper
How to Take a Great Picture Every Time The best pictures aren t always the ones taken by
professionals or of incredible scenery. Memorable pictures are the ones that truly count and anyone
can take them. Getting familiar with the overload of camera settings, equipment and terminology is
a process that comes with experience. Photography is an art that, like many others, takes time to
master. There are many factors and techniques that play into taking pictures. Things grow more
technical the further you reach into photography. As a profession, photography is divided into
different focuses and each style of photography has a set of characteristics. Despite the ... Show

Direct light is based on the size and distance of the light source. Smaller light sources that are
further away from the photo s subject will create sharper, more intense shadows. On the other
hand, diffused light covers the subject in a more full, blended way. Shadows appear more bright
in diffused light. This lighting is usually ideal for portraits of people with uneven skin. A camera
s aperture, shutter speed and ISO also influence the lighting of an image. Aperture and shutter
speed can be confusing at first as they function in opposite directions. The larger the aperture
(measured in f stops) is, the brighter a picture will be. The size of the aperture is the size of the
hole which lets light into the lens. Shutter speed is how quickly the camera lens is exposed to that
light. The higher the shutter speed, the darker the picture will be. Like the aperture, the higher the
ISO, the brighter the picture will be. The downfall to a higher ISO is that the image will appear
more grainy. It is the photographer s job to balance natural lighting with the camera s settings in
order to set a lighting that will make the picture look best.
Aside from all of the technical and analytical factors in photography, the last point to make is
simply taking a lot of pictures. When asked how many keepers do you get from a game? ,
professional photographer Scott Kelby answered I get that question fairly

Class Differences in the Novel Rebecca Essay
In the book, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, there exist a big emphasis on social class and
position during the time of this story. When we are introduced to the main character of the story,
the narrator, we are right away exposed to a society in which different privileges are bestowed
upon various groups. Social place, along with the ever present factor of power and money are
evident throughout the story to show how lower to middle classgroups were treated and mislead by
people on a higher level in society. When we are introduced to the narrator, we are told that she is
traveling with an old American woman; vulgar, gossipy, and wealthy, Mrs. Van Hopper travels

When you look at an example like this one, you start to think whether or not these upper class
people believed in their own morals and if they even had any. But one thing is for sure, such
arrogant actions only go a short way until they come back to haunt you. Because Mrs. Van
Hopper was so blinded by her own self and worried so much about what was going on in other
people s lives, she had lost her attention from her companion friend, which let to a love affair
between the narrator and Mr. Maxim de Winter.
Maxim de Winter was a culture, intelligent old man, and the proud carrier of the de Winter name
and estate of Manderley. He exemplifies all the traits of a rich upper class gentleman and goes
out of his way to take Mrs. Van Hopper s companion out for a little fun. He sees the crude and
vulgar treatment that the narrator is going through and tries to compensate for her and treat her
in a more appropriate manner. With her modest frame, the narrator accepts such an offer because
she knows that her stay in Monte Carlo was only for someone else s benefits and not hers. As in
all stories, the poor, young beautiful woman, falls for a rich and sophisticated man who shows her
that even though society is segmented into different classes, love can bind any two people. For
this you begin to see the other side of the rich and aristocratic world. In Maxim de Winter you
begin to realize that to him, all the money and power isn t worth anything when

Essay On Gettysburg Artillery
Gettysburg Artillery
The battle of Gettysburg had a direct influence on the future of the United States Army Artillery by
changing the artillery brigade structure, battery positioning, and the most concentrated use of an
artillery attack in history. Changes like how artillery transforms into a support unit from support by
fires to infantry and cavalry. The battle also developed the lethality of tactical positioning of cannon
batteries. Artillery as a whole was a major impact onto this military conflict by providing a
decimating direct fire barrage for multiple hours. Before the Battle of Gettysburg, artillery was
deployed as its own combat regiment. The use of cannon batteries was still used as a support
element to other forces, but was not mobilized as simple as it is today. Infantry and cavalry
regiments would go into battle with various artillery regiments that they may have not trained with
previously and may not be up to par with unit standards of precision. This was the biggest weakness
for the Union Army under General Meade. His cannon batteries were well supplied with plenty of
ammunition and stock cannons to crossover ammunition to other cannon batteries. The
Confederate army under General Lee on the other hand had the advantage with a more structured
combat regiment to provide a more lethal support to units assigned to the same regiment.
Confederate forces started training with their own assigned artillery battalions to know exactly how
they operate in

Ralph Ellison Burgess Narrative Style
The narrative style that both Ellis and Burgess have given to their narrators creates a barrier
between the character and the reader. For example, the fact that Alex narrates the story using
Burgess fictional slang, or nadsat , in some senses excludes the reader, behind my Gulliver the
trumpets three wise silverflamed. This reflects the awareness of slang that followed hard upon the
invention of teenagers, but carried to an extreme. Alex, as with his language, is an extreme
version of a current concern. But Alex is more than a mere demonstration of slang . Burgess has
an interest for inventiveness in language even if it takes place outside of formal language. Of

In this sense, we are distanced from Bateman through narrative style. On the contrary, there are
times when Alex embraces us, the reader, as his friends , and labels himself as your humble
narrator , regardless of the social barrier that is created through his diversity in language. There
is, of course, a derisive irony in Alex s tone but, nevertheless, there is a connection of sorts
between character and reader. This connection softens the dramatic blow of the violence the
character of Alex carries out also skilfully hidden through Burgess use of Nadsat, meaning the
audience are perhaps more forgiving of Alex s violence when it is so playfully and lovingly
described as lovely roughing . The audience are therefore more forgiving of Alex and his action
and sympathise for him later in the novel. The playful descriptions of such brutal acts
demonstrates how Burgess was satirising how he youth have become desensitised to society and

Asia Pacific economies are often referred to as emerging economies meaning that their rapid

Adopt a Pet!
INTRODUCTION
Attention Getter: Imagine living on the streets, constantly looking for your next meal and never
knowing the feeling of companionship. This is the life of stray animals.
Credibility Statement: No one really knows how many stray animals roam the streets, but it is
predicted that there are more than 70 million stray cats in the United States alone.
Central Idea (Proposition): By adopting pets from the American Humane Society or other important
rescue shelters, together, we can reduce the amount of stray animals on the streets. It is estimated
that there are over 11 million Americans that support the Humane Society.

By adopting and rescuing animals from the Humane Societies, you are essentially saving their life.
II. Adopting a pet from the Humane Society, does not only benefit the animal, but it also benefits
you as well.
A. Pet stores are usually there to make money selling their animals, so their price is guaranteed to
be much higher than the adoption fee at your local shelter.
1. Adoption costs include more than just the price of the animal. The amount of money you pay at
an animal shelter covers neutering, and any vaccinations or treatments that may be required to keep
your new pet well and healthy.
2. Adoption also greatly benefits the animal, and it can also have a very positive influence on your
own life.
3. In the process of choosing to adopt from a shelter, you may find your new best friend or the
newest addition to your family. Whether it is a fluffy cat, a lap dog, or any pet, it can add something
to your life that you had been missing your whole life.
(This is where I would talk about animals being in puppy mills and cruel facilities...but, this is too
sensitive of a topic for me to handle when doing a speech.)

Common Elements Of Censorship In Fahrenheit 451 And 1984
The Element of Censorship Between Fahrenheit 451 1984 When reading 1984 by George Orwell
and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, you start to see a common element between these two novels,
this element is censorship by the government. What is censorship? Censorship is the suppression of
a publication of any media considered offensive or a threat to security. Both of these novels showed
censorshipelements in their passage by using technology and manipulation on their society to push
their agenda. For instance, in 1984 their government was a totalitarian government that was run by
the Inner party, which regulated the people of Oceania through language and monitoring their
thoughts. In Fahrenheit 451it has the same element of censorship by the government. The
government censors the people of Fahrenheit 451 by using the firemen as an enforcement
censorship by burning down homes that contain books. The common element of censorship
between these two novels showed the controlling grip the government had on their societies by
asserting their power of fear through censorship Whenever a person uses censorship they are
trying to get control of something. In the novel 1984, the inner party has censorship over the
people of Oceania by censoring the history, language, and thoughts. In 1984 the main character
was named Winston worked for The Ministry of Truth where he was in charge of altering the

Military Draft No longer Necessary Essay
Military Draft No Longer Necessary
Over forty years has passed since the United States inducted the last draftee through the Selective
Service System. The Selective Service System is an independent agency of the United States,
which gives the President the right or power to conscript men for military service. There have
been different Acts passed by congress since 1917 that require men of various ages to register for
service. Although, the name of each Act and the age requirements of the registries changed, the
Acts were all similar in nature. They all gave the President the right to call men to war when he
deemed necessary. In January 1973, Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird announced the creation of
the all volunteer service, retracting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the conscription ended in 1973, the number of members has grown considerably over the
years. Men and women alike enlist for many different reasons; from educational purposes, for the
adventure, and/or other benefits the military has to offer. Many enlist just because they want to
defend and serve the country they live in and no other reason. However, all that do enlist want to
be there doing what they are doing, not because someone told them they have to. The armed forces
haven t had any problems recruiting, and are recruiting more than their goal. According to the
Department of Defense, they are recruiting anywhere from 100 to 105% of their goal each year.
Which leads to another reason we should not reinstate the draft, the draft is not needed because the
all volunteer forces have been successful in serving our country for over 40 years through both war
and peace. Melvin Laird, Secretary of Defense (1969 1973), stated in his article in the Washington
Post this past February that our volunteer forces have surpassed expectations and they have been
successful by every measure (Wahingtonpost.com). For more than a decade, the U.S. military has
been able to sustain combat in Iraq and Afghanistan while meeting other global responsibilities. The

Acetaminophen Is A Common Pain Reliever And Fever Reducer...
Acetaminophen is a common pain reliever and fever reducer used to treat conditions such as head,
muscle or toothache, as well as colds, fevers, and even arthritis. It is available in a many tablet
form to be ingested. These tablets are manufactured by a large variety of pharmaceutical
manufactures including a great deal of generic brand companies. These tablets all have the same
active ingredient in acetaminophen, yet each hold different inactive ingredients that can impact the
overall performance of the drug. These inactive ingredients affect the overall chemical stability of
the tablets and can lead to a faster decrease in potency of the acetaminophen tabletover time making
the tablet less viable of an option to treat common aches and pains. Storage outside the range of the
recommended temperature could greatly increase this rate of degradation.
This is an important experiment for what it means to NASA and the International Space Station, as
it will allow them to more accurately understand whether acetaminophen is a viable drug that
should be taken onto the International Space Station and on other missions, possibly missions
related to Mars, where conditions are not ideal. Additionally, this research would allow NASA to
determine if it would be safe for their astronauts to take acetaminophen past the expiration date or if
the expiration date even matters, given the conditions that they were stored, and for how long.
Also, it would help NASA determine which brand they

The Importance Of Service-Learning
It is also a boundary spanning activity in that it requires active involvement from people both within
and outside of the classroom context, often resulting in participant contributors who represent a
variety of generations, ethnicities, social groups, and experience levels (Billig and Furco, 2002,
p.vii). Service learning is designed to reduce the boundaries between an institutional campus
environment and the community around it. It is designed to connect learning to real experience
through service and reflection (Ball and Schilling, 2006; Becker, 2000). As a baseline to facilitate
this development, service learning is distinct from other types of community service and civic
engagementexperiences in that the service learning experience must not only have a service and
reflective component but also be clearly tied to the curriculum through learning objectives and
theoretical underpinnings (Bloomquist, 2015; Pritchard, 2001). As Barbara Holland, former
Director of the U.S. National Service Learning Clearinghouse, shared, Service learning is all in the
hyphen. It is the enrichment of specific learning goals through structured community service
opportunities that respond to community identified needs and opportunities. (Kenworthy U Ren,
Taylor, and Petri, 2006: 121).

The Subtle but Not So Subtle Discrimination
In Alvin Chang s article, The subtle ways colleges discriminate against poor students, explained

references a survey that was taken in order to see what different college administrators expect their

Chang uses does this throughout the article by using highly credible sources highly credible
sources. An Example of this is when Chang uses a research project done by Richard Reeves, a
researcher from Brookings Institution about how much a students educational success depends on
one s parents education level. As a reader this allows you to trust what the author is putting out
there. If Chang would have used sources like Wikipedia or Buzzfeed it would diminished his

Why is Iran Arming: An Examination of a Nuclear Iran through International Relations Theory
A nuclear Iran may be inevitable within the next decade. There is ample evidence suggesting that
Iran has the intention and capability of obtaining nuclear weapons. According to Fox News, a new
document issued by the Department of Defense on the Iran nuclear threat states: Iran could
probably develop and test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the
United States by 2015. Clark Abt, professor at Harvard University, estimates that a single nuclear
attack on a major US harbor, such as New York City or Washington DC, could cause a loss of one
million civilians and could create three trillion dollars of economic losses. In order to identify the
necessary steps to avert Iran from procuring nuclear weapons and thus preventing possible nuclear
attacks, it is crucial to understand why Iran seeks to arm in the first place. It is profusely clear that
International relations theories provide an insight into why Iran aspires to develop a nuclear
program. However, upon further examination, only the realist and identity, not the liberal, theories
in international relations can further our knowledge of this issue. Amongst the numerous reasons
for Iran s desire to have nuclear weapons is the innate insecurity and fear of possible attacks by the
neighboring countries and their allies. An illustration

Courtroom Analysis
When someone steps into the courtroom it requires that person to change how they act, to
change how they present themselves, and to change who they are. When I stepped into the
courtroom at the National Judicial Competition my whole world changed. However, it didn t
happen all at once. The process began months before I arrived in Chicago. It started the day I
accepted the invitation from the state office. That day the little boy inside of me began to fade.
A boy stepped off the bus and methodically picked a path around puddles on his way home. He
bounded up the front steps, grabbed a handful of letters, and pushed open the door. It wasn t until
he tossed the letters onto the counter that he saw the powder blue envelope with his name on it.
He tore open the sealed flap and pulled out a simple, understated letter. He read it once, then again
to make sure it was really addressed to him. Immediately the excitement and the anxiety of being
accepted swirled in his head. He knew this would eclipse anything he had done before. Standing
there next to the counter he decided he would go. Without knowing it, making that decision slowly
began to shape him from the inside. It started invisible transformation that ended up defining who

The Shift From Modernity To Postmodernity
Modernity
Describe the main features of the shift from modernity to postmodernity
Post modernity or post modernism as coined during the counter culture era of the 1960s and 70s
has been highly contestant, ever since it was first used describe the death of modern architecture
and art during the same period. It is this debate of being in a state of modernity or post modernity
that will lead me to describe the shifts in cultural, economic and political views and values that
demonstrates a shift in values from modern to post modern views sociy. This shift to post
modernity has been highly influenced through the works of postmodern artists and architects and
academics such as Focult (Venn, C., Featherstone, M. 2006), Burroughs, Barthelme, Rauschenberg
and Cage (Clarke, S. 2006), who all describe modernity being an exhausted idea, due to the shift of
values changing society to a period of post modernity.
In this essay I will argue that we are now living in a new age of post modernity by describing and
explaining the transition of modernity to post modernity by analysing the social dimensions that
modernity has shifted from to postmodernity. I will also look at the main features of both modernity
and postmodernity and explore their features to draw the conclusion that postmodernity is not a
new era but a new social movement of different views and perspectives.

The Failures Of The Public School System Essay
The Failures of the Public School System
All across the United States, there are schools that are struggling financially and culturally due to
different socio economic challenges. Some of these challenges cannot be avoided, although many
of them could be avoided. One of these problems that could be avoided is the act of
institutionalized separation of rich and poor. If integration was more focused the school systems in
certain parts of a city would not be understaffed and underfunded. In the documentary Waiting for
Superman there were many different points made by the filmmaker that in the modern Education
system people are believing that teachers are the only ones responsible for the success of their
students. In the film states that people should not wait for Superman to come to the rescue; look in
the mirror. We need to understand that it is not just the schools and teachers that are accountable
for students performance . This idea can be seen not only in the film, but in Sheryll Cashin s The
Failures of Integration. A piece of literature that discusses the modern education system and the
organizations within them in the United States. Waiting for Superman argues that the public school
system in the United States is failing due to poor performing teachers in schools. When The
Failures of Integration argues that race and socioeconomic impact is more important than the
teachers in the failing schools. Schools in large city centers are failing faster than schools in

stimuli. The prefrontal cortex is involved in extinction and the retention of fear and is connected to

Introduction In medieval times, illnesses were a common problem associated with everyday life.
However, with the condition of the public hygiene, the lack of medical knowledge, and the
quality of the medicines as it were, it is not surprising that the circumstances surrounding illnesses
were drastically different from the modern age. People got heavily sick from the lightest of colds,
and for some people, it was a matter of life and death. Although differences in the social hierarchy
changed whom they sought to ask for cures, the medieval society had numerous medical practices
to offer that was affordable, and suitable for their needs. While physicians, surgeons, and midwives
treated patients of their specialty, barbers, priests, and sorcerers were also responsible for offering...

People also used the hidden power of herbs and plants, those that were deemed as natural magic
to heal the sick. However, among the numerous healing practices in the medieval period, there
were services provided in religious and magical forms. While it is true that natural, religious, and
magical cures overlap and seem similar in some ways, some illnesses were cured using religious
and magical responses more than other illnesses. This essay will identify what these illnesses were,
explore the medieval beliefs on the cause of illnesses, and examine why these responses occurred
through the circumstances in medieval times.
Medieval Illnesses That Were Treated By Religious and Magical Methods The middle ageswere a
time when illnesses thrived, and outbreaks of great epidemics haunted the society by taking the
lives of many people. As is the same as with modern times, the society was burdened by the
existence of various illnesses that threatened the living. Among those, some illnesses were
categorized as evoking religious and

Brave New World And Brave New World
The 1920 s and the 1930 s brought about many changes in the world such as financial fluctuations
and advancements in technology. The novel Brave New World , by Aldous
Huxley, and the short story There Will Come Soft Rains , by Ray Bradbury, gives an excellent
presentation of futuristic elements and how world climate at the time affected how the author
perceived the future. Both of these stories paint a picture of a world where technology has
advanced to the point that it has negatively affected mankind. Using new historicism, this paper will
explore the different ideas and thoughts of the authors and how they got influenced by the historical
events happening in their time as well as the developing technologies. This paper will also explore
how the two stories, even though written on different decades, are very similar in nature through
their views, themes, and the ultimate effect on society.
Huxley writes the novel Brave New Worldin 1931 around the time technology rapidly replaced
workers jobs and made unemployment rates increase. This caused many people to take any job
they could get such as factory work. In the novel, Aldous Huxley describes a future world where
every single person is working in a factory and doesn t have a say rather or not they want to work
there. The novel shows Huxley sees the future as alienated and ruled by a God who controls every
aspect of people s lives. During this time Huxley writes his novel, the

Tobacco Advertising Essay
Tobacco Advertising Although the Tobacco Industry recently paid enormous fines to the US
Government and Individual states, they continue to promote smoking and influence young human
beings world wide to use their products through multi dimensional advertising. For decades
Americans were not told the truth about the dangers of smoking. The media stayed silent because it
did not want to lose the hundreds of millions of dollars it made from cigaretteadvertising. The
hopeful result of the tobaccolawsuits would be that the advertising target market would not be the
young. The fact that the Tobacco Companies lose three thousand to five thousand customers each
day causes the industry to look for replacements... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A very popular technique used in propaganda is plain folk. This is a technique when advertising
makes the average American citizen feel he can relate to the people in the advertisement. For
instance, an advertisement in Men s Health depicted a family camping trip with a honorable father
smoking while singing around a campfire to his kids. Also, an additional promotion that was found
in this magazine was a healthy in shape man smoking. This is an unrealistic situation for healthy
and well respected fathers. Another way people are shielded from the negative reality of tobacco
use is through celebrities. This is called testimonial techniques of propaganda. Testimonial
technique is an extremely important and controversial method. This technique is when a celebrity
or notorious person gimmicks people into the product by making it seem better because they use it
or promote it. One example of this is Emmit Smith using chewing tobacco. His slogan, Pinch
between your cheek and gums , is catchy and appealing to football fans. This is a extremely
unhealthy promotion for young athletes. The catch with a testimonial technique is it might appear
as though the celebrity enjoys a product when in reality he/she has never touched it.
The last technique of propaganda is Bandwagon. The bandwagon technique makes people feel like
they should go along with the crowd. This technique usually succeeds because most people have a

Move and position individuals in accordance with their care plan.
1.1 Anatomy: The physical structure of the body.
Physiology: The normal functions of the body.
When moving and positioning an individual it is important to ensure they are not moved more
than their body is capable of, as muscles can only move bones at the joint as far as the joint
allows. It is also important to move and handle correctly to ensure nerve fibres are not damaged as
they are delicate structures and also important as they send impulses to muscles which enables the
muscles to contract and relax. When an individual is moved and positioned it is important this
happens smoothly. Sudden movements or pulling in any direction of an individual s limbs or ...

The Korean War Between North And South Korea
The Korean War began on 25 June 1950 and ceased fire after the truce between North and South
Korea in 27 July 1953. Since the truce was the momentary cease fire, the war is actually on going
status between the North Korea and the South Korea. This war certainly became a tragic to both
Korean people and other people who were involved. A lot of people were dead, wounded, missing
and captured, and some other social and political issues were raised. Various conflicting interests
were prevalent in the international relations and no one had the same thoughts with others. For
example, United States participated to protect the democracy in the eastern Asia and to protect the
American soil from possible threats, the communism.
Even though America helped South Korea to protect its own sovereignty, there were previous
chances to bring peace beforehand. In January 1950, United States announced that South Korea and
Taiwan are no longer under the protection strategies. Afterwards, US army left Korea based on their
announcements. However, America would notice that there will be a certain incident if they leave
Korea. The fact that the American army left and South Korea is no longer under the strategical plan
made North Korea to persuade some communist countries to get some supports.
This proxy war happened in Korea brought a wave of death to many people regardless of their
nationalities. What made a lot of American people died in Korea would be questioned to answer
whether this war

The Stages Of Acute Cutaneous Wound Healing
The stages of acute cutaneous wound healing and why some processes may be altered in diabetic
patients
The process by which tissue repair takes place is termed wound healing and is comprised of a
continuous sequence of inflammation and repair, in which epithelial, endothelial, inflammatory
cells, platelets and fibroblasts briefly come together outside their normal domains, interact to restore
a semblance of their usual discipline and having done so resume their normal function . ( The
Cellular Biology of Wound Healing2016)
Wound healing has 3 distinct stages, an inflammatory response, a proliferation phase and a
maturation phase, however wound healing is not a linear process and a patient can move back and
forth throughout the stages.
After the occurrence of a wound the inflammatory process immediately begins and can last up to 3
days ( Wound Healing 2016), the initial injury causes the small vessels around the wound site to be
disturbed resulting in bleeding, the body s first response is a haemodynamic one in that it restricts
these vessels in order to prevent blood loss. There then comes a rapid release of preformed
inflammatory mediators from the cells surrounding the injury, the first thing this causes is the
aggregation of platelets, these platelets adhere to extracellular surface structures which are exposed,
such as collagen and basement membranes, this in turn causes serotonin from platelet stores to be
stimulated. (Kirk, Phillips and Murray 2001)

Seismic imaging is a tool that bounces sound waves off underground rock structures to reveal
possible crude oil and natural gas bearing formations. Ultra sensitive devices named as geophones
are used by the seismologists to document the sound waves as the echo in the earth. After the short

The critical infrastructure is characterized by interdependencies and complexity. Cyber
interdependencies are a result of the pervasive computerization and automation of infrastructures.
The critical infrastructure disruptions can, directly and indirectly, affect other infrastructures,
impact large geographic regions, and send ripples throughout the national and global economy. For
example, under normal operating conditions, the electric power infrastructure requires fuels,
transportation, water, banking and finance, telecommunication, and SCADA systems for
monitoring and control. There is a growing concern about the security and safety of the SCADA
control systems in terms of vulnerabilities, lack of protection, and awareness. Therefore,
information security management principles and processes need to be applied to SCADA systems

Using Two Different Switching Switches And Hubs
SUMMARY
In this lab, we have set up switched LAN using two different switching devices i.e Switches and
Hubs. Various performance metrics like throughput, collision count, traffic received, traffic sent and
delay are analysed by implementing the network with and without switches. The network is then
modified such that its maximum performance and efficiency is achieved.
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this lab is to design a network with and without switches and examine the
network s parameters in both the scenarios. Two such scenarios were created: 1) Only hub (where
one hub is connected to 16 work stations) 2) Hub and Switch (where 8 work stations are connected
for two hubs and a switch connecting them). Here, a hub is a device which ... Show more content on

The X and Y coordinates are set to 50. The name of Ethernet16_hub is set to Hub1.
Each work station is configured by changing its attributes to as shown in the image below. This is
done for all the sixteen work stations.
The next step is to Choose Individual DES statistics. For this project, various statistics like Delay,
Traffic received, Traffic sent and Collision count are selected.
The simulation is then run by selecting the duration to 2 minutes. The graph is as follows.
The red curve represents Traffic received, green represents Traffic sent and blue represents Delay.
From the graph, it is clear that the delay is almost negligible when it is compared with the traffic
sent and traffic received.
Now the current scenario is duplicated and named as HubAndSwitch. In this scenario, a hub which
is Ethernet16_hub and a switch which is Ethernet16_switch are added to the work place by
selecting from the object palette. The names are set as Hub2 and Switch respectively.
The network is then modified by placing the switch in between the two hubs and connecting 8
work stations to each hub with 10Base T links. The network appears as shown in this image below.
The DES statistics are same as that of the OnlyHub scenario. The results are obtained by running the
simulation and setting the duration to two minutes.

Fall Of Roman Empire Essay
Multiple aspects of Rome s economy led to the fall of what was once the most powerful empire in
the world. The Roman Empire was established in 27 BC, and it stretched throughout parts of
Europe, Africa, and Asia. Their economy, which was once the idealistic financial system for
countries worldwide, started to worsen. An empire, especially one as strong and powerful as Rome
s, cannot survive on an unstable economy. As finances, the work force, and diplomatic relations of
Rome started to decline, so did the country. In 476 AD, the Roman Empirecollapsed. The
deterioration of Rome s overall economy led to the fall of what was once known as The Capital of
the World. The finances of Rome played a key part in why the empire collapsed. Rome... Show

Anytime Rome had a problem with another country, the legions would engage in war with them
and usually win. Rome s strong fighting force enabled them to control almost anything they
wanted. However, it was not as easy with the Vandals. The Vandals were a Germanic tribe led by a
man named Gunderic. This tribe, which was highly dangerous, consisted of mainly farmers,
craftsmen, and jewelry makers. The Vandals launched their fleet out to the Mediterranean Sea,
eventually gaining control of many territories that used to belong to Rome, such as North Africa.
Gunderic had his hostile tribe raid coastlines and destroy every ship that crossed its path. The
Vandals stole gold, precious jewels, and more from countries around the world, including ones in
the Roman Empire. The Romans could no longer handle having the Vandals in their territories, so
they engaged in war with them. Surprisingly, the Vandals beat what was once the number one
fighting force in the entire world. In return for winning the war, the Romans gave the Vandals
permission to do whatever they wanted wherever they pleased. This disrupted the trade between
Rome and other countries, for the Vandals had war ships around many important ports and docks.
In addition, the Vandals were constantly raiding and stealing precious items, which made trading
with Rome very risky

Bismarck And Kaiser Wilhelm s Foreign Policy
Maya Epstein Mr. LeRoy Honors History 1 21 October 20151.Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm
were two German officials around the time of world war one. They both had foreign policies
and they were both pretty different. Bismarck s foreign policy had many aims. One of the aims
was to leave territorial expansion behind. He unified Germany and to do so had to incorporate
many other states into Prussia. He was also very much in favor of peace instead of war. He also
never tried to strengthen the naval forces of Germany especially not to ruin the relationship with
England. Next, he decided to keep France isolated as well as friendless so that could not start a
war as revenge. He also focused on Germany s relationship with Austria and Russia. He also
distrusted Italy. Kaiser Wilhelm s foreign policy differed from Bismarck s in many ways.
Whereas Bismarck did things based on logic Kaiser Wilhelm did things more based on emotion.
This resulted in incoherence and inconsistency in the German relations with other nations. He
wanted an empire that could rival the size of the british. He also managed to alienate the English
by aggressively expanding the navy. He was more aggressive and wanted Germany to be the best.
Their decisions were significant to World War one in many ways. One of the ways was it fueled
European tension prior to the war. The different countries did not like some the things either of the
leaders were doing, and that did not help much. Also, because of the already

The Search for America in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
In the early to mid 1800 s, Washington Irving was an immensely popular writer heralded as one of
the great American writers. Irving s importance lies especially in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend
of Sleepy Hollow, the sketches in which he creates the vision of the alternate America(n). His
critique of American society through his main characters Rip and Ichabod and the towns in which
they live gives shape to an America not usually acknowledged by his contemporaries, and thus
crucial to American literary studies today. J. Hector St. JohnDe Crevecoeur, who created the most
definitive statement of American circa Irving s time, certainly would not. ... Show more content on

In this light Crevecoeur, rather than belittling America, gives America a special importance.
Although Americans have European influences at their core, they will do more than simply act on
those European traits in a new setting. Rather, they will bring different traits from every aspect of
Europe to create [. . .] the most perfect society now existing in the world (642). While it could be
argued that Irving does just that in creating his stories, the stories themselves are a far cry from
calling America the most perfect society on earth..
By Crevecoeur s definition, the creation of Irving s work was very American. He wrote roughly
forty five short stories, and No less than a third are traceable [. . .] to German sources
(Pochmann, 1186 7). Among this third are Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,
which both draw heavily from German sources especially Musaeus Volksmarchen (Hoffman, 347
8). What Irving did, though, was to take the myths of Europe and create uniquely American
stories. But while the creation of the stories seems to fit Crevecoeur s mold of what American is,
the message in Irving s sketches far from endorses this notion of America as the perfect society
assimilating all of the good of Europe. For this to occur, America would have to assimilate
European ideas and ideas. Irving seems to take exception to this.

  • 2. Hedda Gabler’s Freedom and Repression as Understood... This passage from the denouement Henrik Ibsen s play, Hedda Gabler, before Hedda s suicide, is an illustration of the vulnerability and defeat of the impetuous and manipulative titular character. Ibsen develops Hedda s character by uncovering details about the conflicts between Hedda and the other characters, Judge Brack, Mrs Elvsted, and George Tesman which highlight Hedda s transformation from an individualistic to despairing individual, conveying the theme of freedom and repression in society. Ibsen uses the relationship and conflict between Hedda and Brack to illustrate Hedda s struggle to assert her free will and power in a male dominated society. The two characters are united as social equals who are members of the aristocracy as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through this stage direction, Ibsen highlights the objectification of women. In many aspects, George Tesman too does not see Hedda s full value as a person, and from the beginning of the play, Ibsen makes this clear. Tesman adores rather than love his wife, proudly viewing her as an object of adornment that makes several of his friends jealous. A scholar who is more devoted to his work than his wife, Tesman spends more time with his books than his wife, even during their honeymoon. In this passage, Ibsen further illustrates this objectification of women. Tesman turns his head away from her because he believes there is nothing in the world (32) that Hedda can help Tesman with; Hedda is merely an ornament and not of real use to Tesman. Ibsen s use of stage direction that depicts Tesman turning his head after talking to Hedda both indicate Tesman s rejection of Hedda as a valuable person and his obliviousness to Hedda and her desperate situation. Tesman s imperceptiveness is further highlighted by Ibsen when Hedda imitates Tesman s intonation (16). Also, Hedda s mimicking of Tesman, which is used earlier in the play as a sign of her contempt, is also used here in this passage by Ibsen to portray Hedda s desperation. That Hedda would turn to Tesman, a person she dislikes and views as beneath her, as a means of escape, is a clear indication of her despondency and madness, which foreshadow her ultimate act of despair suicide. Yet Tesman thoughtlessly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of Susan Glaspell s Trifles Essay In any form of writing, various literary elements come together to compose a thorough and multifaceted work of literature. All the elements serve a distinct purpose; symbolism, for one, is imperative in a literary work because it aids the reader in the overall comprehension of the particular theme or multiple themes that a story is trying to convey. In Susan Glaspell s, Trifles, she meticulously incorporates significant symbols that help the reader recognize and construe the depth of the significance of the jarof fruit preserves, quilt, bird, and the bird cage. Things are not always as insignificant as they appear to be, and Glaspell s play is a prime example of how important it is to read between the lines. A central theme in Glaspell s play is gender obedience, displayed seemingly by Mrs. Wright. Because the focus of Mrs. Wright s life, as a wife, revolved around maintaining fruit preserves, we can conclude that her primary concern for the state of the jar of preserves was more significant that the mere thought of frozen fruit. The jars of fruit preserves were Mrs. Wright s escape and distraction; something she had control over and something she could call her own. This is why the women understood why she would be so concerned about her preserves even in the midst of a legal predicament. MRS. PETERS. [To the other woman.] Oh, her fruit; it did freeze. [To the County Attorney] She worried about that when it turned so cold. She said the fire d go out and her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Memorable pictures are the ones that truly count and anyone can take them. Getting familiar with the overload of camera settings, equipment and terminology is a process that comes with experience. Photography is an art that, like many others, takes time to master. There are many factors and techniques that play into taking pictures. Smaller light sources that are further away from the photo s subject will create sharper, more intense shadows. On the other hand, diffused light covers the subject in a more full, blended way. Shadows appear more bright in diffused light. This lighting is usually ideal for portraits of people with uneven skin. A camera s aperture, shutter speed and ISO also influence the lighting of an image. Aperture and shutter speed can be confusing at first as they function in opposite directions. The larger the aperture (measured in f stops) is, the brighter a picture will be. The size of the aperture is the size of the hole which lets light into the lens. Shutter speed is how quickly the camera lens is exposed to that light. The higher the shutter speed, the darker the picture will be. Like the aperture, the higher the ISO, the brighter the picture will be. The downfall to a higher ISO is that the image will appear more grainy. It is the photographer s job to balance natural lighting with the camera s settings in order to set a lighting that will make the picture look best. Aside from all of the technical and analytical factors in photography, the last point to make is simply taking a lot of pictures. When asked how many keepers do you get from a game? , professional photographer Scott Kelby answered I get that question fairly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Essay On Gettysburg Artillery Gettysburg Artillery The battle of Gettysburg had a direct influence on the future of the United States Army Artillery by changing the artillery brigade structure, battery positioning, and the most concentrated use of an artillery attack in history. Changes like how artillery transforms into a support unit from support by fires to infantry and cavalry. The battle also developed the lethality of tactical positioning of cannon batteries. Artillery as a whole was a major impact onto this military conflict by providing a decimating direct fire barrage for multiple hours. Before the Battle of Gettysburg, artillery was deployed as its own combat regiment. The use of cannon batteries was still used as a support element to other forces, but was not mobilized as simple as it is today. Infantry and cavalry regiments would go into battle with various artillery regiments that they may have not trained with previously and may not be up to par with unit standards of precision. This was the biggest weakness for the Union Army under General Meade. His cannon batteries were well supplied with plenty of ammunition and stock cannons to crossover ammunition to other cannon batteries. The Confederate army under General Lee on the other hand had the advantage with a more structured combat regiment to provide a more lethal support to units assigned to the same regiment. Confederate forces started training with their own assigned artillery battalions to know exactly how they operate in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Selective Service System is an independent agency of the United States, which gives the President the right or power to conscript men for military service. There have been different Acts passed by congress since 1917 that require men of various ages to register for service. Although, the name of each Act and the age requirements of the registries changed, the Acts were all similar in nature. They all gave the President the right to call men to war when he deemed necessary. Since the conscription ended in 1973, the number of members has grown considerably over the years. Men and women alike enlist for many different reasons; from educational purposes, for the adventure, and/or other benefits the military has to offer. Many enlist just because they want to defend and serve the country they live in and no other reason. However, all that do enlist want to be there doing what they are doing, not because someone told them they have to. The armed forces haven t had any problems recruiting, and are recruiting more than their goal. According to the Department of Defense, they are recruiting anywhere from 100 to 105% of their goal each year. Which leads to another reason we should not reinstate the draft, the draft is not needed because the all volunteer forces have been successful in serving our country for over 40 years through both war and peace. Melvin Laird, Secretary of Defense (1969 1973), stated in his article in the Washington Post this past February that our volunteer forces have surpassed expectations and they have been successful by every measure (Wahingtonpost.com). For more than a decade, the U.S. military has been able to sustain combat in Iraq and Afghanistan while meeting other global responsibilities. Acetaminophen is a common pain reliever and fever reducer used to treat conditions such as head, muscle or toothache, as well as colds, fevers, and even arthritis. It is available in a many tablet form to be ingested. These tablets are manufactured by a large variety of pharmaceutical manufactures including a great deal of generic brand companies. These inactive ingredients affect the overall chemical stability of the tablets and can lead to a faster decrease in potency of the acetaminophen tabletover time making the tablet less viable of an option to treat common aches and pains. Storage outside the range of the recommended temperature could greatly increase this rate of degradation. This is an important experiment for what it means to NASA and the International Space Station, as it will allow them to more accurately understand whether acetaminophen is a viable drug that should be taken onto the International Space Station and on other missions, possibly missions related to Mars, where conditions are not ideal. The Importance Of Service-Learning It is also a boundary spanning activity in that it requires active involvement from people both within and outside of the classroom context, often resulting in participant contributors who represent a variety of generations, ethnicities, social groups, and experience levels (Billig and Furco, 2002, p.vii). Service learning is designed to reduce the boundaries between an institutional campus environment and the community around it. It is designed to connect learning to real experience through service and reflection (Ball and Schilling, 2006; Becker, 2000). As a baseline to facilitate this development, service learning is distinct from other types of community service and civic engagementexperiences in that the service learning experience must not only have a service and reflective component but also be clearly tied to the curriculum through learning objectives and theoretical underpinnings (Bloomquist, 2015; Pritchard, 2001). Ziad Jawadi International Relations: Gabe Scheinmann 4/12/11 Why is Iran Arming: An Examination of a Nuclear Iran through International Relations Theory A nuclear Iran may be inevitable within the next decade. There is ample evidence suggesting that Iran has the intention and capability of obtaining nuclear weapons. According to Fox News, a new document issued by the Department of Defense on the Iran nuclear threat states: Iran could probably develop and test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the United States by 2015. Clark Abt, professor at Harvard University, estimates that a single nuclear attack on a major US harbor, such as New York City or Washington DC, could cause a loss of one million civilians and could create three trillion dollars of economic losses. In order to identify the necessary steps to avert Iran from procuring nuclear weapons and thus preventing possible nuclear attacks, it is crucial to understand why Iran seeks to arm in the first place. It is profusely clear that International relations theories provide an insight into why Iran aspires to develop a nuclear program. However, upon further examination, only the realist and identity, not the liberal, theories in international relations can further our knowledge of this issue. Amongst the numerous reasons for Iran s desire to have nuclear weapons is the innate insecurity and fear of possible attacks by the neighboring countries and their allies. An illustration ... It is this debate of being in a state of modernity or post modernity that will lead me to describe the shifts in cultural, economic and political views and values that demonstrates a shift in values from modern to post modern views sociy. This shift to post modernity has been highly influenced through the works of postmodern artists and architects and academics such as Focult (Venn, C., Featherstone, M. 2006), Burroughs, Barthelme, Rauschenberg and Cage (Clarke, S. 2006), who all describe modernity being an exhausted idea, due to the shift of values changing society to a period of post modernity. This caused many people to take any job they could get such as factory work. In the novel, Aldous Huxley describes a future world where every single person is working in a factory and doesn t have a say rather or not they want to work there. The novel shows Huxley sees the future as alienated and ruled by a God who controls every aspect of people s lives. Tobacco Advertising Essay Tobacco Advertising Although the Tobacco Industry recently paid enormous fines to the US Government and Individual states, they continue to promote smoking and influence young human beings world wide to use their products through multi dimensional advertising. For decades Americans were not told the truth about the dangers of smoking. The media stayed silent because it did not want to lose the hundreds of millions of dollars it made from cigaretteadvertising. The hopeful result of the tobaccolawsuits would be that the advertising target market would not be the young. A very popular technique used in propaganda is plain folk. This is a technique when advertising makes the average American citizen feel he can relate to the people in the advertisement. For instance, an advertisement in Men s Health depicted a family camping trip with a honorable father smoking while singing around a campfire to his kids. Also, an additional promotion that was found in this magazine was a healthy in shape man smoking. This is an unrealistic situation for healthy and well respected fathers. Another way people are shielded from the negative reality of tobacco use is through celebrities. This is called testimonial techniques of propaganda. Testimonial technique is an extremely important and controversial method. This technique is when a celebrity or notorious person gimmicks people into the product by making it seem better because they use it or promote it. One example of this is Emmit Smith using chewing tobacco. His slogan, Pinch between your cheek and gums , is catchy and appealing to football fans. This is a extremely unhealthy promotion for young athletes. The catch with a testimonial technique is it might appear as though the celebrity enjoys a product when in reality he/she has never touched it. The last technique of propaganda is Bandwagon. The bandwagon technique makes people feel like they should go along with the crowd. This technique usually succeeds because most people have a deep ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the truce was the momentary cease fire, the war is actually on going status between the North Korea and the South Korea. This war certainly became a tragic to both Korean people and other people who were involved. A lot of people were dead, wounded, missing and captured, and some other social and political issues were raised. Various conflicting interests were prevalent in the international relations and no one had the same thoughts with others. For example, United States participated to protect the democracy in the eastern Asia and to protect the American soil from possible threats, the communism. Even though America helped South Korea to protect its own sovereignty, there were previous chances to bring peace beforehand. In January 1950, United States announced that South Korea and Taiwan are no longer under the protection strategies. Afterwards, US army left Korea based on their announcements. However, America would notice that there will be a certain incident if they leave Korea. The fact that the American army left and South Korea is no longer under the strategical plan made North Korea to persuade some communist countries to get some supports. This proxy war happened in Korea brought a wave of death to many people regardless of their nationalities. • 48. The Stages Of Acute Cutaneous Wound Healing The stages of acute cutaneous wound healing and why some processes may be altered in diabetic patients The process by which tissue repair takes place is termed wound healing and is comprised of a continuous sequence of inflammation and repair, in which epithelial, endothelial, inflammatory cells, platelets and fibroblasts briefly come together outside their normal domains, interact to restore a semblance of their usual discipline and having done so resume their normal function . ( The Cellular Biology of Wound Healing2016) Wound healing has 3 distinct stages, an inflammatory response, a proliferation phase and a maturation phase, however wound healing is not a linear process and a patient can move back and forth throughout the stages. After the occurrence of a wound the inflammatory process immediately begins and can last up to 3 days ( Wound Healing 2016), the initial injury causes the small vessels around the wound site to be disturbed resulting in bleeding, the body s first response is a haemodynamic one in that it restricts these vessels in order to prevent blood loss. There then comes a rapid release of preformed inflammatory mediators from the cells surrounding the injury, the first thing this causes is the aggregation of platelets, these platelets adhere to extracellular surface structures which are exposed, such as collagen and basement membranes, this in turn causes serotonin from platelet stores to be stimulated. The critical infrastructure disruptions can, directly and indirectly, affect other infrastructures, impact large geographic regions, and send ripples throughout the national and global economy. For example, under normal operating conditions, the electric power infrastructure requires fuels, transportation, water, banking and finance, telecommunication, and SCADA systems for monitoring and control. There is a growing concern about the security and safety of the SCADA control systems in terms of vulnerabilities, lack of protection, and awareness. Therefore, information security management principles and processes need to be applied to SCADA systems without exception. 3. • 50. Using Two Different Switching Switches And Hubs SUMMARY In this lab, we have set up switched LAN using two different switching devices i.e Switches and Hubs. Various performance metrics like throughput, collision count, traffic received, traffic sent and delay are analysed by implementing the network with and without switches. The network is then modified such that its maximum performance and efficiency is achieved. OBJECTIVE The main objective of this lab is to design a network with and without switches and examine the network s parameters in both the scenarios. Two such scenarios were created: 1) Only hub (where one hub is connected to 16 work stations) 2) Hub and Switch (where 8 work stations are connected for two hubs and a switch connecting them). Here, a hub is a device which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The X and Y coordinates are set to 50. The name of Ethernet16_hub is set to Hub1. Each work station is configured by changing its attributes to as shown in the image below. This is done for all the sixteen work stations. The next step is to Choose Individual DES statistics. For this project, various statistics like Delay, Traffic received, Traffic sent and Collision count are selected. The simulation is then run by selecting the duration to 2 minutes. The graph is as follows. The red curve represents Traffic received, green represents Traffic sent and blue represents Delay. From the graph, it is clear that the delay is almost negligible when it is compared with the traffic sent and traffic received. Now the current scenario is duplicated and named as HubAndSwitch. In this scenario, a hub which is Ethernet16_hub and a switch which is Ethernet16_switch are added to the work place by selecting from the object palette. The names are set as Hub2 and Switch respectively. The network is then modified by placing the switch in between the two hubs and connecting 8 work stations to each hub with 10Base T links. The network appears as shown in this image below. The DES statistics are same as that of the OnlyHub scenario. The results are obtained by running the simulation and setting the duration to two minutes. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Roman Empire was established in 27 BC, and it stretched throughout parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. Their economy, which was once the idealistic financial system for countries worldwide, started to worsen. An empire, especially one as strong and powerful as Rome s, cannot survive on an unstable economy. As finances, the work force, and diplomatic relations of Rome started to decline, so did the country. In 476 AD, the Roman Empirecollapsed. The deterioration of Rome s overall economy led to the fall of what was once known as The Capital of the World. The finances of Rome played a key part in why the empire collapsed. Rome... Rome s strong fighting force enabled them to control almost anything they wanted. However, it was not as easy with the Vandals. The Vandals were a Germanic tribe led by a man named Gunderic. This tribe, which was highly dangerous, consisted of mainly farmers, craftsmen, and jewelry makers. The Vandals launched their fleet out to the Mediterranean Sea, eventually gaining control of many territories that used to belong to Rome, such as North Africa. Gunderic had his hostile tribe raid coastlines and destroy every ship that crossed its path. The Vandals stole gold, precious jewels, and more from countries around the world, including ones in the Roman Empire. The Romans could no longer handle having the Vandals in their territories, so they engaged in war with them. Surprisingly, the Vandals beat what was once the number one fighting force in the entire world. In return for winning the war, the Romans gave the Vandals permission to do whatever they wanted wherever they pleased. This disrupted the trade between Rome and other countries, for the Vandals had war ships around many important ports and docks. • 53. Bismarck And Kaiser Wilhelm s Foreign Policy Maya Epstein Mr. LeRoy Honors History 1 21 October 20151.Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm were two German officials around the time of world war one. They both had foreign policies and they were both pretty different. Bismarck s foreign policy had many aims. One of the aims was to leave territorial expansion behind. He unified Germany and to do so had to incorporate many other states into Prussia. He was also very much in favor of peace instead of war. He also never tried to strengthen the naval forces of Germany especially not to ruin the relationship with England. Next, he decided to keep France isolated as well as friendless so that could not start a war as revenge. He also focused on Germany s relationship with Austria and Russia. He also distrusted Italy. Kaiser Wilhelm s foreign policy differed from Bismarck s in many ways. Whereas Bismarck did things based on logic Kaiser Wilhelm did things more based on emotion. This resulted in incoherence and inconsistency in the German relations with other nations. He wanted an empire that could rival the size of the british. He also managed to alienate the English by aggressively expanding the navy. He was more aggressive and wanted Germany to be the best. Their decisions were significant to World War one in many ways. One of the ways was it fueled European tension prior to the war. The different countries did not like some the things either of the leaders were doing, and that did not help much. The Search for America in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow In the early to mid 1800 s, Washington Irving was an immensely popular writer heralded as one of the great American writers. Irving s importance lies especially in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the sketches in which he creates the vision of the alternate America(n). His critique of American society through his main characters Rip and Ichabod and the towns in which they live gives shape to an America not usually acknowledged by his contemporaries, and thus crucial to American literary studies today. In this light Crevecoeur, rather than belittling America, gives America a special importance. Although Americans have European influences at their core, they will do more than simply act on those European traits in a new setting. Rather, they will bring different traits from every aspect of Europe to create [. . .] the most perfect society now existing in the world (642). While it could be argued that Irving does just that in creating his stories, the stories themselves are a far cry from calling America the most perfect society on earth.. By Crevecoeur s definition, the creation of Irving s work was very American. He wrote roughly forty five short stories, and No less than a third are traceable [. . .] to German sources (Pochmann, 1186 7). Among this third are Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which both draw heavily from German sources especially Musaeus Volksmarchen (Hoffman, 347 8). What Irving did, though, was to take the myths of Europe and create uniquely American stories. But while the creation of the stories seems to fit Crevecoeur s mold of what American is, the message in Irving s sketches far from endorses this notion of America as the perfect society assimilating all of the good of Europe. For this to occur, America would have to assimilate European ideas and ideas. Irving seems to take exception to this. II. The Melting Pot For Crevecoeur, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
