Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language teaching method that uses physical actions to help students learn a new language. Students respond to verbal commands by performing specific motions and movements without speaking. TPR aims to teach language comprehension before speaking. It works by linking speech and motor skills through gestures and actions in a low-stress environment. While effective for beginners, TPR has limitations as it does not fully address more advanced language skills.

1. What is Total Physical Response (TPR)?
 Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language teaching method
built around the coordination of speech and action; it attempts to
teach language through physical (motor) activity.
TPR is a method that relies on assumption that when learning a
second or additional language, that language is internalized through
a process of code-breaking similar to first language.

2.  Students respond to commands that require physical movements.
TPR is primarily intended for ESL (English as a Second
Language) teachers, although the method is used in teaching
other language.

3. Features of TPR
 The coordination of speech and action facilitates language
learning.
 Grammar is taught inductively.
 Speaking is delayed until comprehension skills are established.
 The learner is a listener and a performer responding to commands
individually or collectively.
 Learning language by body gesture (body movements).
 Learning is maximized in a stress free environment.

4. Criticisms
 TPR deals with only the beginning stages of language learning.
 TPR syllabus and the utterance and the sentences within it are
questionable as far as their communicative relevance is
concerned.

5. Reasons for chosen TPR approach
 We have chosen the Total Response approach because it gives a
set of instruction a child should follow. The TPR aids students to
demonstrate their understanding but it does not forces them to
speak if they are not ready but it encouraged to do the action that
is being commanded and modeled.

6.  The TPR approach was chosen because it is more students
centered. It stress on students creativity, it also shows that error is
apart of studying and students are actor and actors. In addition,
the teacher gives motivation and encouragement.
