What is the Difference
Between Fe500 and
Fe500D Steel Bar?
Introduction
TMT bars are typically graded as Fe 415, Fe 415D, Fe 500, Fe
500D, Fe 550, Fe 550D, Fe 600. where the numbers indicate the
level of stress that must be applied to deform it.
For example, Fe 500 starts to deform when a pressure of 500
Newton/mm2 is applied to it.
Different Grades of TMT Bar
Standard Grades of TMT Bars are as follows
Fe-415, Fe-415D, Fe-500, Fe 500D, Fe-550, Fe-
550D and Fe-600
As per IS 1786-2008 minimum Yield Stress & Tensile Strength for
different grade of TMT Rebars are mentioned below.

Construction Purposes?
If we look at the Chemical Analysis & Elongation Test as per the
IS 1786:2008 then we can see that the Fe 500/500D is the most
ductile amongst all other TMT Rebar Grades.

of TMT Re-bars are mentioned below as per IS-1786/ 2008

Which Grade of TMT Rebar is perfect for all
Construction Purposes?
Chemical Structure determine the best Elongation
IN TMT Rebar “Fe” denotes Iron and “D” stands for elasticity in simple term how
much flexible TMT Rebar is.
Fe 500/Fe 500D Grade of TMT Bars contain lower percentage of sulphur &
phosphorus that makes these bars are highly acceptable for all type of
construction purposes.
Sulphur - Higher percentage of sulphur makes the steel prone to Fire. Using
lesser amount of Sulphur makes it "Fire Resistant".
Phosphorus - Using higher amount of phosphorus makes the TMT bar brittle
which means if the tmt rebar stored where temperature is low the rebars will
become fatigue and it will lead to the external crack on it.
Using lower amount of Sulphur & Phosphorus makes the TMT Rebar highly
ductile, fire resistant & increase the weldability.

Fe 500 & Fe 500D TMT both are good for different type of construction purposes
but Fe 500D is more ductile over Fe 500. Tensile strength for both grades are
same but FE 500D is more ductile.
Most reinforced steel will require bending, before being used in a concrete
structure. Because they are relatively high strength steels, and the ribs on the
bar. Surface act as stress concentrators, reinforcing steels may fracture on
bending if the radius of bend is too tight.
The bend test consists of bending a test sample of TMT Re-bar through plastic
deformation by applying a load against a suitable mandrel until a specified angle
(180 degree) of bend is reached. Depending on the requirements of the material
standard such as IS 1786 / 2008; it should be parallel at a specified distance, an
insert is used to control this distance. Test is usually carried out at room
temperature and the bending arrangement with two supports (S1 & S2) and a
Mandrel (M) has been shown below.
Why FE 500D is better than FE 500?
•Fe 500D high ductility is the main feature for which it is most used in all
construction purposes. Brittle (Opposite to ductility) material cannot exchange
higher energy. Whereas, FE 500D for high ductility can absorb sudden loads
during natural disasters such as Earthquakes, Flood etc.
•FE 500D is the most preferred TMT Rebar in high seismic zones
•After melting the sponge iron and molten metal in blast furnace in 500D TMT
Rebar, It is standard procedure to dephosphorize the steel in the ladel by
following the metallurgical process.
•Minimization of using the scrap brings control over tramp elements like
Cu,V,Ni,Cr etc.
Why FE 500D is better than FE 500?
Fe 500D with lower quantities of carbon, sulphur and phosphorous, helps in
preserving the steel and resisting earthquake shocks in future.

What is the Difference Between FE 500 & FE 500D TMT Bar?

  • 1. What is the Difference Between Fe500 and Fe500D Steel Bar?
  • 2. Introduction TMT bars are typically graded as Fe 415, Fe 415D, Fe 500, Fe 500D, Fe 550, Fe 550D, Fe 600. where the numbers indicate the level of stress that must be applied to deform it. For example, Fe 500 starts to deform when a pressure of 500 Newton/mm2 is applied to it.

Different Grades of TMT Bar Standard Grades of TMT Bars are as follows Fe-415, Fe-415D, Fe-500, Fe 500D, Fe-550, Fe- 550D and Fe-600 As per IS 1786-2008 minimum Yield Stress & Tensile Strength for different grade of TMT Rebars are mentioned below. Chemical Structure determine the best Elongation IN TMT Rebar “Fe” denotes Iron and “D” stands for elasticity in simple term how much flexible TMT Rebar is. Fe 500/Fe 500D Grade of TMT Bars contain lower percentage of sulphur & phosphorus that makes these bars are highly acceptable for all type of construction purposes. Sulphur - Higher percentage of sulphur makes the steel prone to Fire. Using lesser amount of Sulphur makes it "Fire Resistant". Phosphorus - Using higher amount of phosphorus makes the TMT bar brittle which means if the tmt rebar stored where temperature is low the rebars will become fatigue and it will lead to the external crack on it. Using lower amount of Sulphur & Phosphorus makes the TMT Rebar highly ductile, fire resistant & increase the weldability.
  • 7. Which Grade of TMT Rebar is perfect for all Construction Purposes? Maximum Mandrel Diameter Bend Test Upto 20 Over 20 FE 500 4Φ 5Φ FE 500D 3Φ 4Φ Fe 500 & Fe 500D TMT both are good for different type of construction purposes but Fe 500D is more ductile over Fe 500. Tensile strength for both grades are same but FE 500D is more ductile. Most reinforced steel will require bending, before being used in a concrete structure. Because they are relatively high strength steels, and the ribs on the bar. Surface act as stress concentrators, reinforcing steels may fracture on bending if the radius of bend is too tight. The bend test consists of bending a test sample of TMT Re-bar through plastic deformation by applying a load against a suitable mandrel until a specified angle (180 degree) of bend is reached. Depending on the requirements of the material standard such as IS 1786 / 2008; it should be parallel at a specified distance, an insert is used to control this distance. Test is usually carried out at room temperature and the bending arrangement with two supports (S1 & S2) and a Mandrel (M) has been shown below.
  • 8. Why FE 500D is better than FE 500? •Fe 500D high ductility is the main feature for which it is most used in all construction purposes. Brittle (Opposite to ductility) material cannot exchange higher energy. Whereas, FE 500D for high ductility can absorb sudden loads during natural disasters such as Earthquakes, Flood etc. •FE 500D is the most preferred TMT Rebar in high seismic zones •After melting the sponge iron and molten metal in blast furnace in 500D TMT Rebar, It is standard procedure to dephosphorize the steel in the ladel by following the metallurgical process. •Minimization of using the scrap brings control over tramp elements like Cu,V,Ni,Cr etc.
  • 9. Why FE 500D is better than FE 500? Fe 500D with lower quantities of carbon, sulphur and phosphorous, helps in preserving the steel and resisting earthquake shocks in future.
