What is Reading Skills?
Reading skill means the ability to understand written text and read it. It is require to develop this skill
at early age of people. In English language, reading skills is very important because the English
learners (ELLs) are starting learning at first how to read with some bacis vocabulary. The more of
ELLs reads of English texts, the more they can improve their English skills in other aspects.
Good ESL Reading Habits
1. Read the entire text on your first time
throught it, even if you don’t understand
some of the words.
2. Always keep reading in everyhwere and
every time.
3. Read aloud with passion.
4. Try to guess the meaning of unknown words.
Types of Reading Skills
1. Skimming: used to undertand the main
idea.
2. Scanning: used to find some pices of
information in very short time.
3. Intersive reading: accurate reading for
detailed understanding.
4. Extensive reading: used for pleasure and
general understanding

Reading comprehension means the understanding of any text means and the ideas of the author that
he/she is attempting to say or mention. Some texts seem hard to understand because of the words that
are used or because the interest of the whole article. As a English reader, you need to improve your
reading skills by learning new strategies.
Skill building for students
1. Read a lot.
2. Skim passages to find the main ideas.
3. Scan passages to find key facts.
4. Build your vocabulary guessing the meaning.
5. Takes and write notes.
6. Underlined imoportant words such as names and
time.
Strategies for students
1. Try not to read it slowly and carefully.
2. Read the first question. Ensure you
understand what it wants and then look for
the answer in the passage.
3. Work as quickly as you can.
4. Eliminate the wrong answers to find the
crorrect one.
5. Read the first and last sentence of each
paragraph.
Types of context Clues to look for:
The follwing list shows some of different kinds of context authors provide in their passages.
Synonym or antonym: Authors sometimes uese some words unfamiliar words for you, so try
know them by using the synonyms and antonyms for the words to undertand the text.
Example Clues: Authors sometimes provide specific examples to explain or illustrate something.
Comparison/Contrast Clues: Authors sometimes provide transition words such as: on the
other hand – however – but – unlike to talk about something is opposite.
Direct Explanation Clues: Authors sometimes provide directly the meaning of the word by
using commas or parentheses.
