So why use multimedia?
What is effective ICT?
Effective ICT is…
• Engage and enthuse learners
• Raise achievement
• Enable better understanding
• Foster improved communication
• Have a positive impact on workload
Exercise
• This exercise provides a scenario involving the
use of ICT. You have to give it a score from 0 -
10, according to how effective you think the
  use of ICT is.
Scenario 1
• Not really being sure, but using the computers
to allow the students to play a few games to
  keep 'em busy.
• 0
• This is completely pointless in terms of
effective ICT. This is using the computers to
keep students occupied. With some limited
preparation you could provide students with
some specific learning games or directly
  related content....
Scenario 2
• Providing students with an online glossary to
accompany their worksheet - so they can
choose to get additional support if they want
  to.
• 8
• This is an excellent way of supporting
  students' learning, creating differentiation
within the lesson. If students require
additional support they can use ICT to help
themselves - without needing to consult the
  teacher.
Scenario 3
• Using a microphone in your laptop/mobile
phone to get students to record a radio
  report.
• 9
• This can be a particularly effective. It can
become a role-play activity, recorded using ICT
  - leading onto audio work that can be
assessed by their classmates. Can also be
  used as podcast projects.
Scenario 4
• Deciding not to use ICT as you feel a task is
  fine as it is.
• 10
• This - whilst being a little daft, is a very
effective use of ICT - it is essential to only use
ICT when it will have a positive effect on the
task. Sometimes the most effective use can
  be not to use it!
More scenarios to think about
• Allowing students greater control over their
work by selecting and justifying the most
appropriate program to complete a task.
• Playing an interactive quiz or game as a
  plenary.
• Showing the worksheet via a digital projector
rather than a photocopying a class set.
• Getting students to use their mobile phone in
  your lesson.
Final thought
• "Technology is nothing. What's
important is that you have faith in
  people, that they're basically
good and smart, and if you give
  them tools, they'll do wonderful
things with them.” - Steve Jobs
