COMPUTER MOTHERBOARD
INTRODUCTION
• Motherboard is the main
circuit board in a PC.
• It contain all the Circuits &
Components that run the PC.
MAJOR COMPONENTS
1. CHIPSETS.
2. CPU ( Central Process Unit )
3. BIOS ( Basic Input Output system )
4. RTC ( Real Time Clock )
CHIPSETS
.These are the Large Chips that integrate
many functions.
.Chipsets often broken into Two Devices
with on providing an Interface from the
CPU to the Memory & the other
providing Controllers.
CLASSIFICATION OF CHIPSETS
There are Three types of Chipsets:
1. SOCKETS.
2. EXPANSION SLOTS.
3. PORTS.
SOCKETS
1. Power Supply: - Dc power to all Circuit
- ( 20 Pins Connector )
2. IDE : - Integrated Drive Electronics
- ( HDD & CD/DVD )
- ( 40 Pins connector )
3. FDD : - Floppy Disk Drive
- ( 34 Pins Connector )
EXPENSION SLOTS
. ISA SLOTS : ( Industry Standard Architecture )
. PCI SLOTS : ( Peripheral Component Interconnect )
. AGP SLOTS : ( Accelerated Graphic Ports )
. SIMM SLOTS : ( Single Inline Memory Modules )
. DIMM SLOTS : ( Dual Inline Memory Modules )
EXPENSION SLOTS
. ISA SLOTS : ( Industry Standard Architecture )
. PCI SLOTS : ( Peripheral Component Interconnect )
. AGP SLOTS : ( Accelerated Graphic Ports )
. SIMM SLOTS : ( Single Inline Memory Modules )
. DIMM SLOTS : ( Dual Inline Memory Modules )
PORTS
There are Three types of ports on the
outside of the computer:
Serial Ports
. For transmitting slow data over long
distances, 9 pins or 25 Pins connector.
. A line connected to Serial port will send bit
One at a time.
. It is usually used to connect devices that don't
require fast Transmission, e.g. Mouse,
Keyboard, Monitors & Speakers.

PARALLEL Ports
. Transmitting Fast data over short distances,
can Transmit Information efficiently only up to
15 feet, e.g. Printers.
. A line connected to a Parallel port allows 8
Bits ( 1 Byte ) to be Transmitted ,e.g. Cars on
an 8- lane Highway.
USB Ports
. For Transmitting data to up to 127 devices
in a Daisy Chain to one general purpose Port.
. Hot Pluggable, USB devices to be connected or
disconnected even while the Pc is running.
