Ancient China experienced several important dynasties between 5,000-200 BC. The Xia Dynasty is believed to have been the first, founded by Yu the Great to control flooding of the Yellow River. The next major dynasty was the Shang Dynasty, the first for which there is both archaeological and documentary evidence. Two important developments during the Shang were the earliest forms of Chinese writing and the beginning of bronze metalworking.
