PLASTIC WELDING
 Plastic welding is the process of uniting softened
surfaces of materials, generally with the aid of heat.
 Welding can be used to produce bonded joints with
mechanical properties that approach to those of
parent material.
 Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polyvinyl Chloride,
Polyurethane and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
(ABS) are frequently used in plastic welding.
 Plasticsthat can be welded are called
"thermoplastics" and when they are heated to a
sufficiently high temperature they will soften and
welded.
CLASSIFICATION OF PLASTIC WELDING
Welding process are categorized by the heating method that is used. Two general
categories are
1. External heating 2. Internal heating
External heating:
• It rely on convection & conduction to heat the weld surface.
• Hot tool, hot gas, extrusion, implant induction, implant resistancewelding
Internal heating:
• It rely on conversion of mechanical energy into heat through surface
frictionFurther divided into internal mechanical, Internal electromagnetic heating
• Ultrasonic , Friction, Laser, RF welding.
TYPES OF PLASTIC WELDING
1. HOT GAS PLASTIC WELDING
2. LASER WELDING
3. HOT PLATE PLASTIC WELDING
4. ULTRASONIC PLASTIC
WELDING
5. FRICTION WELDING
HOT GAS PLASTIC WELDING
Hot gas welding is a
fabrication process for
thermoplastic materials.
The process uses a
stream of heated gas
usually air to heat and
melt the thermoplastic
welding rod.
TWO TYPES OF HOT GAS WELDING
LASER WELDING
.
1. Laser plastic welding is a
process of bonding plastic
using focused laser radiation.
2. In this process laser light is
turned into heat energy. The
heat created at the interface a
molten weld, plastic are fused.
HOT PLATE PLASTIC WELDING
• Hot plate welding is a thermal
welding technique capable of
producing strong, air tight welds
in thermoplastic parts.
• When using thermal energy in
tightly controlled manner,
thermoplastic parts can be
heated to molten temperature
very quickly and then joined
together.
• Ultrasonic plastic welding is the joining
thermoplastic through the use of heat
generated from high frequency mechanical
motion.
• It is the process in which high frequency
electrical energy into high frequency
mechanical motion.
• The mechanical motion along with applied
force creates frictional heat at the plastic
components.
ULTRASONIC PLASTIC WELDING
Friction welding is the
process that generates
heat through
mechanical friction
between workpieces in
relative motion to one
another.
FRICTION WELDING
• Very fast process.
• Very clean process, little to no weld
flash. Relatively low cost of
equipments.
• A weld is permanent, which prevents
tampering with the internal
components.Plastic welds are much
lighter than mechanical fasteners.
• High quality welding for a wide range
ofthermoplastic.
ADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC WELDING
DISADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC WELDING
• A weld is permanent , the
part will never be able to be
opened and resealed in the
same way.
• Hot plate welding process is
relatively slow.Hot polymer
melt often sticks to the hot
plate surface. High capital
cost is required vibration
welding (equipment and
fixture)
APPLICATIONS
• Hot plate welding is a very inexpensive
process in which we use handheld
devices to bond less.
• Friction welding is also inexpensive
process using low maintenance
machinery and low cycle time.
• Laser plastic welding is ideal for welding
in sensor housing tail lights and
manifolds in the automotive industry.

APPLICATIONS • Hot plate welding is a very inexpensive process in which we use handheld devices to bond less. • Friction welding is also inexpensive process using low maintenance machinery and low cycle time. • Laser plastic welding is ideal for welding in sensor housing tail lights and manifolds in the automotive industry.
