This document summarizes the key lessons learned by Dean Shareski over 7 years of participating in online networks and digital communities. The 5 main lessons are: 1) Literacy evolves with new technologies and focuses on active participation and creation over passive consumption. 2) Networks of people are critical resources for learning, more so than any single information source. 3) Trust and authenticity remain important online. 4) Having an online identity through domain names and profiles allows ownership over one's work and presence. 5) Sharing and contributing to online communities is essential for remaining relevant in the digital age.
