Leadership in 21st Century Learning: A Call to LibrariesLori Reed
Opening keynote for the 78th Annual Quebec Library Association Conference: Libraries as Learning Places.
This presentation covers how libraries must pave the way as leaders in learning and information literacy. Why libraries play a crucial role in education. How to become a champion of 21st century learning and information literacy.
Examining the Anatomy and Physiology Lab ExperienceInsideScientific
Join Wendy Riggs for a deep dive into the virtual Anatomy and Physiology Labs that she runs at College of the Redwoods and how she uses technology to facilitate meaningful learning opportunities for her students.
Laboratory experiences play a fundamental role in a robust biology education, allowing students to experience and explore living systems through powerful hands-on activities. Lab activities present a luxurious opportunity for experiential learning that can be incredibly rich (and fun!). However, the lab component in a fully online science course is often viewed with skepticism by many, including administrators, counselors, students, and instructors. In fact, many professional programs in healthcare require that the lab component of prerequisite courses be completed in a face-to-face setting.
In this webinar, Wendy will identify some of the core student outcomes of the anatomy and physiology laboratory experience, and then explore different ways to effectively address those outcomes in a fully online environment. This presentation will take an honest look at common barriers to hands-on lab activities in online classes and explore the pros and cons of various solutions.
Key Topics Include:
- Identify the important outcomes of laboratory experiences for anatomy and physiology students.
- Discuss common barriers to hands-on laboratory experiences in fully online science courses.
- Examine the pros and cons of common online laboratory solutions.
Join Wendy Riggs, MS, for a deep dive into the difficulties of building a community in online classrooms and how to overcome these barriers using technology.
A sense of community is usually developed among students and educators when working in the same room. This sense of community is essential for student learning. COVID-19 has changed the educational landscape, and more instructors are being asked to deliver some (or all) of their STEM classes online. Teaching online poses a significant challenge to the development of a sense of classroom community, often because instructors are already spread thin by the demands of creating high quality, fully-online lecture and lab content. Despite a lack of training and experience with online teaching, fostering a sense of community and collaboration in an online classroom is critical for facilitating an empowering education.
In this webinar, Wendy will talk about the important role that a sense of community plays in spaces of learning, the barriers educators may encounter when trying to teach online classes, and sustainable strategies for doing it anyway.

The 23 Things concept is familiar to most of us in the library world. Some have tried it out, some have tried a version of it, some still have doubts about whether it works, and some think it's over. Well, we’re here to tell you, it's still going strong! Nebraska's state-wide lifelong learning program, Nebraska Learns 2.0, started as a 16 week program in 2008-2009. The original program was so popular it has continued as an ongoing program, with one new Thing offered each month since April 2009. Starting in February 2012, a BookThing was added to the program. Program organizers Christa Burns and Michael Sauers will talk about the process they have laid out over the past few years, how they've responded to participant feedback, and how the program became what it is today. They will also show other current examples of self-directed online learning programs, such as Boston Public Library's Learning for Life Online and the UK-based 23 Things for Professional Development.

Best practices for online learning--Tulsa Tech Center PD Day Feb 18, 2014cjbonk
Abstract: There are dozens of new technologies emerging each year and endless ways in which they can be used for teaching and learning. So many technologies and pedagogical uses, in fact, that most instructors of higher education are overwhelmed. One solution for this problem is to locate and share best practices. As part of this "best practices" movement, Curt Bonk offers two simple yet powerful frameworks that can be used to understand hundreds of Web-based pedagogical ideas that can motivate students to high success in online learning environments. Bonk will provide these best practices in online teaching based on two decades of his research. Such ideas can creatively engage students into deeper and better learning. He will reveal dozens of practical examples using his widely acclaimed R2D2 (Read, Reflect, Display, and Do) framework for instructional design with technology. Not done, he will showcase his TEC-VARIETY model for student motivation with Web technology. Each letter of the TEC-VARIETY model stands for a well known motivational principle (e.g., tone, encouragement, curiosity, variety, autonomy, relevance, interactivity, engagement, tension, and yielding products.). While detailing best practices he has seen around the globe, Bonk will also discuss how his two methods can be expanded or altered to fit one’s particular preferences and needs. No matter what galaxy or planet you are on, these ideas and techniques can be linked student motivation, collaboration, interaction, and general engagement in the learning process. Those attending this session will walk away with many practical strategies that can be incorporated directly into face-to-face, blended, and virtual classes, events, or programs.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
