Read the following sentences.
1.Sketching is my pastime.
2.My hobby is drawing.
3.He likes helping other people.
4.The artist is fond of creating several
sculpture.
What is a Gerund?
◦A gerund is a verbal that ends in -ing and functions
as a noun. Remember that Gerunds are used as
nouns, not as verbs. The term “verbal” indicates that
a gerund is based on a verb.
◦ Gerunds functions as nouns. Thus, they can be
subjects, appositive, subjective complement, direct
object, and object of the prepositions.
◦ A gerund is a noun made from a verb. To
form a gerund, add -ing to the base form
of a verb and make any necessary spelling
changes.
◦ It is the topic of the sentence.
As a subject
Examples
• Smoking cigarettes is bad for you.
•Buying a house is his dream.
•Living in the city center can be stressful.
•Building a career as an artist was one of her
biggest goals.
•Writing a poem was harder than he
expected.
•Driving fast is dangerous
Try this!
◦ Travelling might satisfy your desire for new
experiences.
◦ Singing is my sister’s favorite hobby. She
has a great voice.
◦ Swimming is a great way to get fit, but I’m
afraid of the water!
◦ It explains or identifies another noun. An
appositive is a noun renaming another noun. It is
placed next to a noun, that explain the noun and
are equivalent to it. Always remember that
appositives are separated from the other words in
the sentence by commas.
As an appositive
Examples
◦ Her job, analyzing data brought in by
satellites, is exciting.
◦ Her work, baking bread, helps the
community.

◦ His experience, flying over the sea, was
the most exciting one in the life of Icarus.
◦ The project, keeping the community clean
and green, is supported by the people.
◦It is also called as a predicate noun that
follows a linking verb and refers to the
subject of the sentence. It further
describe the subject of the sentence.
As a subjective complement
Examples
◦ Her favorite hobby is reading.
◦ His only focus was improving the lives
of others.
◦ One of his talents is singing.
◦ His work seems challenging.

structure for the people of the Greece.
◦ One of his duties is attending meetings.
