Let’s recall our past lesson. . .
1. What are colloids?
2. What are the importance of colloids to us, to our
environment?
3. Identify the type of the following colloids.
*
*
*
*The following individual components of the mixtures shown
can be separated by the following ways:
1. by picking or manual separation
2. by using a magnet
3. through filtration
4. through evaporation
5. through sedimentation and decantation
6. through distillation
7. through floatation

Standards for Science Simple Activity/Experiment
*
*Discussion of procedures.
*Preparation of materials.
*Activity proper.
*Data gathering.
*Accomplishment of activity sheet.
*Reporting of findings.
*
*MIX AND PICK
*Activity 4.1
*
* Lesson Concept:
*
* There are various methods of separating mixtures that are commonly found in the surroundings.
Handpicking is a convenient method of separating substances or components, when the quantity of
impurities is usually not very large. This method of handpicking can be used for separating slightly larger sized
impurities like the pieces of dirt, stone, and husk from wheat, rice or pulses.
*
* Time: 1 class period
*
* Materials:
* Mix nuts, pebbles, rice, mongo seeds, plates
*
* Procedures:
*
* 1. Observe the materials.
* 2. Identify the materials.
* 3. Mix the following components using a jar.
* 4. The teacher will give a time limit for each group to separate the mixture.
* 5. Put each component to separate plates.
*
*Data Gathering:
Complete the table below with the needed data.
3. Did you use any materials to separate the components of the
mixture?
Why?
4. Which components did you easy to separate?
Why?
Difficult to separate?
Why?
Components Appearance Way of Separating
Guide Questions:
1. Describe the mixture.
2. How were you able to separate the
individual components of mixture?
*Course mixtures like the pebbles and the sand can be easily
separated by manual separation.
*Bigger components can be picked up.
*Manual separation is the method use for sorting different
substances in coarse mixture.
*Toys of different sizes can be easily separated through hand
picking.
*Eggs of different sizes can also be separated using manual
separation or hand picking.
*If the mixture is of a bigger volume, this can take a longer
time.
*
*
Give other activities where you can apply manual separation or
hand picking when separating components of mixture.
*
*What is the way of separating components of mixtures
without using any instruments aside from your hands.
*
*A cup of flour.
*3 tablespoon of rice/palay
*Small basin
*Sieve strainer
*By group
