Station 1: Hand Separation
Materials: Mixture of coins
of different amount
What to do: separate the
coins according to their
amount
Station 2: Decantation
Materials: Mixture of rice
and water, beakers
What to do: separate rice
from water
Station 3: Filtration
Materials: mixtures of tea and
water ,wipes as substitute for
filter paper, funnel
What to do: separate tea from
water using wipes as substitute
for filter paper
Station 4: Magnetic
Separation
Materials : Mixture of iron
nails and flour, magnet
What to do: separate iron
nails and flour using magnet
Station 5: Evaporation
Materials: mixture of salt and
water, multifunction cooker (as
substitute to alcohol lamp,
beaker and matches)
What to do: separate water
from salt through evaporation


Materials: Mixture of
different colors of rubber
band

ABSTRACTION:
How mixtures are
be separated?
Describe each
briefly.
 Hand Picking- This
method involves
simply picking out
all the unwanted
substances by hand
Decantation- he
process of pouring
away a liquid while
leaving a solid (often
a precipitate)
behind.
Filtration- is used
here to remove solid
particles from the
liquid. Various filtering
agents are normally
used like filtering
paper or other
materials.
Magnetic Separation-
When one substance in
the mixture has some
magnetic properties then
this method is quite
useful. Strong magnets
are commonly used to
separate magnetic
elements.
Evaporation -, the
solution is heated until
the organic
solvent evaporates
where it turns into a
gas and mostly leaves
behind the solid
residue
APPLICATION:
1. A Junk shop is loaded
with a mixture of different
materials ( e.g. bottles,
paper, tin can) if you are
the owner of the shop
what technique you are
going to use to separate
the mixture? Why?
2. In your Araling Panlipunan on
proper waste management how
are you going to deal with a
trash can inside the classroom
loaded with a mixture of garbage
( paper, plastics, candy
wrappers).
