   1. Discuss with your mentee about their progress in implementing agreed
      classroom norms (listed below):

                 Montbello Classroom Instruction Norms
                               Critical Elements in a Lesson
   īƒŧ    Entrance activity
   īƒŧ    First person content and language objectives that are revisited throughout lesson
   īƒŧ    Posted agenda with times
   īƒŧ    Explicit instruction on and connection to vocabulary
   īƒŧ    Link to prior learning, a connection to students’ lives (building background!)
   īƒŧ    Modeling through sample work, student-led or teacher-led
   īƒŧ    Student collaboration, cooperative group work, student-led work-time
   īƒŧ    Checks for understanding, from simple thumbs up to higher level questioning
   īƒŧ    Closure activity, summary of day’s learning, or exit ticket

*Our new teachers are participating in a SIOP Boot camp on Saturday, September 17th. Thus,
some strategies/norms listed above may be a completely fresh concept. Invite your mentee to
check out your classroom, review lesson plans, and share your strategies. Remind them that
teaching strategies, such as modeling and checks for understanding, come with practice.
