Page Menu: Typically slides in with the pages of the course allowing the user to jump to certain parts of the course. Typically shows course
progress as well.
Navigation (Next/Back): Navigation is how users move through your course.
Transcript: To be 508 Compliant you need to consider those with hearing disabilities. Transcript allows the person to ready what is
being said in the audio.
Seekbar: The seeker will typically has the page controls for audio and animation
Title: Course title that stays there throughout the course
Page: Pages will change depending on the content. This is typically where the instruction happens.
Player: This establishes brand, navigation, controls that span across the entire course. The pages will change but the player typically stays
the same across all pages.
eLearning Course Terms
Progress indicator (Optional): This gives the user an indication of where they are at in the course and how much more they need to do.
This helps avoid frustration of how long the course takes.
Resources (Optional): Additional resources the user can use or download to help with their work.
Notes (Optional): This could be additional information or an optional area someone can explore on their own deeper into the subject.
During development could also be notes to a developer
Volume (Optional): Controls the volume of the course
Glossary (Optional): Location of all the terms in one location used in the course.

Week 1: eLearning Course Basics - Why program?

  • 8. eLearning Course Terms Page Menu: Typically slides in with the pages of the course allowing the user to jump to certain parts of the course. Typically shows course progress as well. Navigation (Next/Back): Navigation is how users move through your course. Transcript: To be 508 Compliant you need to consider those with hearing disabilities. Transcript allows the person to ready what is being said in the audio. Seekbar: The seeker will typically has the page controls for audio and animation Title: Course title that stays there throughout the course Page: Pages will change depending on the content. This is typically where the instruction happens. Player: This establishes brand, navigation, controls that span across the entire course. The pages will change but the player typically stays the same across all pages.
  • 9. eLearning Course Terms Progress indicator (Optional): This gives the user an indication of where they are at in the course and how much more they need to do. This helps avoid frustration of how long the course takes. Resources (Optional): Additional resources the user can use or download to help with their work. Notes (Optional): This could be additional information or an optional area someone can explore on their own deeper into the subject. During development could also be notes to a developer Volume (Optional): Controls the volume of the course Glossary (Optional): Location of all the terms in one location used in the course.

Editor's Notes

  1. Let’s take a minute to think about where digital learning is at. What kind of devices is learning on? Learning is happening everywhere. Apps, websites, Videos, Augmented Reality, phones, watches more much much more. Does our learning reach all these different avenues? Are IDs expected to learn and build training in all of these avenues? How do we get our training into all these places? We embrace how these are made. It helps to understand, speak and guide developers to creating the best kind of learning for these environments. Not only are they on these devices they are served as several different types of media files, web, native, video, audio and more.
  2. How do you feel when I say code? Have you ever tried to code?
  3. Do you get scared? Do you immediately shut off? What really drove me to speak on this was during demo fest last year when I showed code to some people and they walked away. Sometimes we shun even speaking of code because we think it is too complex or not needed in eLEarning. But if we understand the foundation of what we are creating the more efficient our courses become and the more we can do with both out of the box and custom solutions.  
  4. My goal is to help you understand at least some of the basics when it comes to code. Some core concepts that will help you understand how code is structured and help you realize that you are already working with a lot of these fundamentals in most standard creation tools.
  5. I think sometimes we take this approach. We try to be the one man band shops and do it all our selves. Sometimes you don’t have a choice and that is fine you can still do amazing things as a one man band but think of the masterpieces you can create when you engage more people with the talent for the perfect instrument and instead of forcing each instrument to play in a way it was not meant to, use the instrument that is perfect for the outcome you want and you guide the process to get the outcome you want.
  6. In order to do this we need to think less like one man bands and think of our selves like an orchestra conductor. The conductor does not play every instrument but they understand the sound of what that instrument makes so they can lead the person playing the instrument to produce the right kind of sound. If the conductor doesn’t understand the instrument then they can’t tailor the music to fit perfectly with the rest of the orchestra. I know this doesn’t always work nor do we have the resources to do this but there is a lot we can do with limited resources.
