… ..Web 2.0 is like pornography…difficult to describe, but you know it when you see it.. … .Web 2.0 is like the lyrics of a Pink Floyd number, it means different things to different people, depending upon the state of your mind….. Source: http://www.slideshare.net/AmitRanjan/how-organisations-can-harness-the-power-of-web-20-308578 What is it?
What is it? The newest generation of the Internet (Web 2.0) “represents a fundamental revolution in communication no less important or transformative than the invention of the Guttenburg printing press.” (Fryer 2006) Source: Wesley Fryer, “Welcome to Web 2.0,” March 26, 2006,http://www.wtvi.com/teks/web2/
What is it? What does Google say? What does Wikipedia say? What does Google images say? What about Slideshare?
What is it? Community and collaboration eg. blogs, microblogs, social tagging, social networks User generated content eg. wikis, music, audio, videos, photos, PowerPoint slides “ Internet as platform” eg. online applications, cloud computing
What isn’t it? Source: http://www.slideshare.net/techsavvyteacher/what-is-web-20-1844622 Source: http://www.slideshare.net/AmitRanjan/how-organisations-can-harness-the-power-of-web-20-308578
Why is it important? New ways to communicate Easier access to information (from experts, from the “wisdom of crowds”) User control of the conversation Changing business model (incl. educational institutes) eg. encouraging people to interact with your website/business eg. taking your business to where users would rather be
What are the educational implications? People go to the web to learn If you’re not visible on the web you’re invisible (or worse, ignored) Students and teachers need to develop skills in utilising these new tools and modes of communication (nb. students are doing it voluntarily. Teachers need to catch up!) Students want to actively participate in their education (eg. creating, critiquing, editing, modifying and interacting with content, curriculum, teachers, students, employers, the online community) so institutions need to facilitate greater student control.
