Web browsers are programs installed locally that allow users to access and view content on the internet, downloading text, pictures, and videos. The first mainstream browser was Mosaic, released in 1993, which introduced basic features still used today like hyperlinks. Many Mosaic developers later helped create Netscape Navigator, which remained popular until 2007 and was the predecessor of Firefox. In contrast, search engines are programs that aggregate reference data so they can point users to websites related to search terms entered.
