Aquatic animals and plants obtain oxygen dissolved in water for breathing and carbon dioxide dissolved in water for photosynthesis. When waste is dumped in water, it decays and uses up the oxygen dissolved in the water. This decreases the amount of oxygen in the water, polluting it and destroying aquatic life. Human activities like dumping waste, excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides can pollute water by reducing dissolved oxygen levels.

Acid deposition involves both wet and dry deposition of acidic components. Wet deposition is acid rain, while dry deposition involves acidic particles and gases deposited directly from the air.
