About 1,90,000 ha brackishwater area have been developed for shrimp culture in the country spread over all the coastal states. Since 1995 culture of P monodon is affected by White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and the development of shrimp farming has become stagnant.
Most of the Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia were also culturing P. monodon and since 2001-02 onwards most of them have shifted to culture of exotic Whiteleg shrimp,Litopenaeus vannamei because of the availability of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) and Specific Pathogen Resistant (SPR) broodstock. In India, Pilot-scale introduction of L.vannamei was initiated in 2003 and after a risk analysis study large-scale introduction has been permitted in 2009.

Fisheries and aquaculture make a big contribution to development in the areas of employment. Describing the importance of aquaculture is not an easy task. According to M. Shahbandeh, the number of people who were engaged in fishing and aquaculture amounted to around 40.34 million and 19.27 million respectively worldwide in 2016 and the number has been increasing day by day since 1995. The vast majority of them are from developing countries, working in fish production or fish raising, fish processing, harvesting, and small-scale fish business.

Aquaculture
Aquaculture is the controlled process of rearing, breeding and harvesting of aquatic species, both animals and plants, especially for human consumption, though it is controlled aquatic environments like the oceans, lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams. It’s a similar conception to agriculture, but with fish instead of plants or livestock. It also serves various functions such as food production, restoration of threatened and endangered species populations, wild stock population enhancement, the building of aquariums, and fish cultures, and habitat restoration.
History of Aquaculture
The husbandry of fish is therefore not a new phenomenon. Ancient practices based on the modifications of natural bodies of water or wetlands to entrap young fish in enclosures until harvest have just evolved into more systematic and scientific methods and techniques.
Aquaculture has a long tradition, which is about 4 000 years, and form the beginning of the time man identified the importance of aquaculture.. Probably aquaculture began in China before very long ago, due to the wants of an emperor to have an unremitting supply of fish in his land. It is supposed that the proficiencies for keeping fish in ponds originated in China with fishermen who kept their extra catch alive temporarily in baskets submerged in rivers or small bodies of water created by damming one side of a river bed.(Ling, S.W,Aquaculture in Southeast Asia: A Historical Overview,A Washington Sea Grant Publication).
Another theory is that aquaculture arose from ancient practices for pinning down fish, with the operations steadily improving from trapping-holding to trapping-holding-growing, and finally into complete agriculture or farming practices.
Methods of Aquaculture
The methods of aquaculture’s farm-to-table process can differ from species to species. Generally, there are four stages of the production chain, starting in hatcheries and ending at the seafood counter in your grocery store. Four stages are:

2. Good water quality on tilapia farms depends on a
suitable environment to promote growth. Such an
environment can be achieved by maintaining the
correct balance between feed input and the assimilative
capacity of the water.
However, the more fish that are grown, the higher the
demand on fish production, and various additional
factors become necessary to achieve good water
quality.
3. Water is a most important element in aquaculture.
• Poor water quality:-
Affect fish and shellfish health through impairment of
development and growth
Degrade the quality of the product by tainting its flavor
Accumulation of high concentrations of toxic
substances which could en-danger human health.
4. The name ‘tilapia’ was derived from the African
Bushman word meaning ‘fish’ (Trewavas, 1982).
Tilapias represent a large number of freshwater fish
species within the family Cichlidae. According to
(Kaufman and Liem, 1982).

6. Temperature, turbidity, salinity, alkalinity, acidity,
hardness, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, total gas

7. Environmental requirements of tilapia
Tilapia can grow and reproduce at salinity
concentrations of up to 36 parts per thousand, are
highly tolerant of low dissolved oxygen (DO)
concentrations and ideal growing temperatures are
usually between 22°c to 29°c.
Best growth rates are achieved between pH 7 to 9,
while other variables must also be kept at a safe range
to produce tilapia in a cost-effective manner.

9. Tilapia owns a big importance in the commercial fish
farming business sector.
As Tilapia grows very rapidly in suitable climate conditions
and environment, most of the fish farmer used to rear
Tilapia, besides being very tasty to eat. And, there is a great
demand for this fish in the market. Since most of the people
used to eat almost all kind of Tilapia recipes.
However, when it comes to the Tilapia fish farming
potential, low-lying areas having water stagnation are best
suitable for the agricultural activities. Specifically, such
kind of areas can be converted into water resource like a
pond in order to raise Tilapia fishes.
10. In Tilapia Fish Farming, it is difficult to rear different
aged sized fishes in the same rearing pond due to their
unconditioned propagation.
We rear the male fishes only, which are known as
Monosex Tilapia, separated from the female fishes.
Because male fishes grow faster with uniform size and
gain good weight in comparison to the female ones.
And, the farming of only Monosex Tilapia (Male)
separated from females is known as Monosex Tilapia
Fish Farming.
11. Tilapia fishes are faster in growth with uniform size
and weight.
It has an excellent market demand in both; local as well
as international markets.
It prefers almost all types of supplementary feeds.
They can be profitably cultured in seasonal ponds.
They can be also cultured with a high stocking density
in the ponds or local water resources.
12. They have high disease resistance power and are able
to grow in almost all kind of adverse environment.
These fishes can be also raised in saline water, where
the salinity is in between 12 to 16 ppt.
Well known for attaining huge profit with average
fish farming pond management and care.
Are able to feed on pond natural feed like planktons,
algae, etc.
13. Take care of following points in fish feeding
management in tilapia fish farming
Make sure to change the pond water occasionally for
the better growth of fishes.
Regularly check out the PH of water and soil. The PH
value of pond water should be in from 7 to 8 for the
excellent growth rate of fishes.
Make sure of any diseases should not enter in to the
pond. The presence of any diseases in the pond directly
lower down the production.
Keep pond safe by keeping away all types of natural
predators such as snakes, frogs, etc.
14. There is also need of fresh and clean environment for
the optimum fish production.
Feeding should be done properly with sufficient
amount of food having high nutritious value and
protein content.
Periodical monitoring of the fishes is to be carried out
for disease incidence and growth. Records for day to
day management of the pond to be kept for inspection.
