4. What isWater Pollution?
Water Pollution is the release of harmful substances into the
water bodies, that makes water unsafe for human use and
damage the auatic ecosystem.
6. Water Pollution in INDIA
Pollution of the Ganges:-The main cause of water pollution
in the Ganga river are the disposal of human sewage and
animal waste and disposal of industrial waste into the river.
Pollution of theYamuna:-The major sources contributing to
the pollution ofYamuna are: Untreated sewage, industrial
effluents, the dumping of garbage and dead bodies,
immersion of idols and pollution due to in-stream uses of
water.

The Ganga Case Study
INTRODUCTION
The Ganga is a holy and historical river of India and Bangladesh.
It is the most populated river basin in the world.
In 2007, it was ranked among the five most polluted rivers of the
world.
The Ganga action plan, has been a great failure so far due to lack of
environmental planning.

CAUSES
HUMANWASTE:-A large proportion damp
the solid and liquid wastes in Ganga river like
domestic usage (bathing, laundry and public
defecation), Sewage wastes, unburnt dead
bodies through in Ganga river.

CAUSES
INDUSTRIALWASTE:- Countless industries
lies on the bank of the Ganga river from
Uttrakhand toWest Bengal like chemical
plants, textile mills, paper mills, fertilizer
plants and hospitals waste.

CAUSES
RELIGIOUS FACTOR:-During festival
seasons a lot of peoples come to Ganga Snans
to cleanse themselves. After death of the
people dump their asthia in Ganga river.

IMPACT OF POLLUTION
Riverine life:-The Ganga river pollution increased day by day
and from this pollution marine life have been going to lost in
near future and this polluted water disturb the ecosystem of the
river. And irrigation and Hydroelectric dams give struggle to life
in their life cycle.
Bio life:- Some dams are constructed along the Ganges basin.
Dams are collected a huge volume of water and this is hazard
for wild life which are moving in Ganga river.

IMPACT OF POLLUTION
HUMAN BEINGS:-Water in the Ganges has been correlated
to contracting dysentery, cholera, hepatitis, as well as severe
diarrhea which continue to be one of the leading causes of
death of children in India.

GANGA ACTION PLAN
The GangaAction Plan or GAP was a program launched by Rajiv
Gandhi in April 1986 in order to reduce the pollution load on the
river. Under GAP I, pollution abatement schemes were taken up in
25 Class-I towns in three States of U.P., Bihar andWest Bengal.
GAP I was declared complete on 31.03.2000 with an expenditure of
Rs. 452 crore. As GAP I addressed only a part of the pollution load
of Ganga,GAP II was launched in stages between 1993 and 1996,
59 towns along the main stem of river Ganga in five States of
Uttarakhand, U.P., Jharkhand, Bihar andWest Bengal are covered
under the Plan and included the following tributaries of the
Ganges,Yamuna, Gomti, Damodar and Mahananda.

OIL SPILLING
What is oil spill?
An oil spill refers to any uncontrolled release of crude
oil, gasoline, fuels, or other oil by products into the
environment.
Oil spills can pollute land, air, or water, though it is
mostly related to oceanic oil spills.

OIL SPILLING
Cause of oil spilling.
They have become a major environmental problem,
chiefly as a result of intensified petroleum exploration
and production on continental shelves and the
transport of large amounts of oils in vessel.
17. Mauritius Oil Spill incident
MVWakashio, a japanese ship, was travelling from China to
Brazil on 25th July 2020.
It carried approximately
•3894 tons of fuel oil.
•207 tons of diesel.
•90 tons of lubricant oil.
The cause of this incident is still unknown.
18. Mauritius Oil Spill incident
After 5th August the oil started to leak.
7th August- Govt of Mauritius declared a state
of environmental emergency and called for
international help.
11th August:-800-900 tons of fuel oil has
leaked a breached tank and drifted into lagoon.
OTHER ESTIMATES:- 1000-2000 tons of fuel
oil leaked into environmentally sensitive water.
19. Impact Of Oil Spill
Birds--Oil covered birds are a universal symbol of
environmental damage wreaked by oil spills. Some species of
shore birds might escape by relocating if they sense danger in
time, but sea birds that swim and dive for their food are most
likely to be covered in oil.
Marine mammals--Oil spills frequently kill marine
mammals such as whales, dolphins, seals and sea otters.
Wildlife habitat and breeding grounds--Long-term damage
to species and their habitats and nesting or breeding grounds
is one of the most far-reaching environmnetal effects caused
by oil spills.
20. Removal Of Oil
Dispersion-Releasing chemical dispersants,
usually from a small plane or a response vessel, on an
oil slick breaks down the oil into smaller droplets,
allowing them to mix more easily into the water
column.
21. Removal Of Oil
Burning- Commonly Known as In Situ
Burning(ISB). It is the process of burning
spilled oil where it is on the ocean.
22. Removal Of Oil
Skimming-It is the process that
removes oil from the sea surface before it
reaches sensitive areas along a coastline.
