What are waste collection vehicles?
A waste collection vehicle is more generally known
as garbage truck and dustbin lorry.
These trucks are used for picking up waste and then
moving it to landfills or other places where waste
materials are managed and treated.
You can have their view mostly in urban areas. Most
of the time garbage cart is mistaken as dump truck.

Front loaders
The frontload truck has automated forks on the
front. These forks are inserted into the sleeves on the
waste container with the use of levers the driver operates
from inside of the truck.
The waste container or dumpster is mechanically lifted
over the truck and turned upside down allowing all the
waste or recyclable material to be emptied into the
vehicle’s hopper.
The waste is then compacted by a hydraulically powered
moving wall that works to move the waste to the rear of
the truck. 6
Front Loader
Front loaders
Some trucks are meant to service residential
customers, front loaders are usually used to service
commercial and industrial businesses that use large
dumpsters.
Most of the newer front load trucks are more efficient
allowing the driver to hydraulically pack loads while
driving.

Rear loaders
Rear loader
Just as the name implies, rear loaders have a large
opening at the rear of the vehicle where a waste
collector can toss waste bags or empty the contents
of containers into.
Some vehicles have a lifting mechanism that will
automatically empty large carts without the
operator having to lift the waste by hand.
9
Rear loaders
Rear loader
With most modern garbage truck systems, the rear
loader will use a hydraulic mechanical system to
move a wall or shovel to compact the waste.

Automated Side Loaders
ASL
These types of trucks can be loaded either manually
or automatically from the side.
An automated side loader or ASL is a garbage truck
that has a mechanical arm with an automated lift that
reaches out to the side of the truck and grabs a
residential garbage container.
It lifts the garbage container and dumps the trash into
the top front of the garbage truck. The trash is then
forced through an aperture into the main body and
compacted towards the back of the truck.
12
Automated Side Loaders
ASL
One of the benefits of having an automated side load
truck is that it only needs one person to operate the
truck. The side load truck was invented because it’s
design is needed for certain types of streets and
containers.
• Pneumatic collection trucks are
specialized vehicles equipped with flexible
pneumatic tubes controlled and positioned
by attached cranes or booms.
• The engines of these trucks can be used to
generate a suction force that applies
negative pressure to the mouth of the tube.
13
Pneumatic collection
Pneumatic Collection
Truck
• The tube is positioned over an opening
(typically a hole to an underground storage
unit) and proceeds to suck up the waste
into the holding tank on the back of the
truck.
• The tube’s flexibility allows for effective
operation even around nearby obstacles.
14

Pneumatic Collection
Truck
• Grapple trucks are another type of specialized
waste collector used primarily in large-scale
industrial and recycling activities.
• These trucks come equipped with a hydraulically
operated boom serviced by a clamshell bucket or
an orange-peel grapple.
• The boom reaches out to an adjacent pile of debris
or large and heavy waste items and grabs them
with the grappling attachment.
15
Grapple Trucks
Grapple Trucks
• The oversized waste is then deposited into a dump
container on the back of the truck for hauling
offsite.
• Given the size, weight, and irregularity of the waste
handled by grapple trucks, they do not typically
compact their waste loads during transit.
16
Grapple Trucks
Grapple Trucks
• Recycling trucks are a kind of specialized
vehicle used by standard hauling routes.
They are designed to manage source-
separated waste, collecting and hauling it
to a local multistream (“clean”) materials
recovery facility (MRF).
17
Recycling Trucks
Recycling Trucks
• However, since most waste collection
operations nowadays also include a pickup of
source-separated recyclable materials,
recycling trucks have become an integral part
of the standard waste collection vehicle fleet.
• No compaction is typically performed in
these trucks either, but they do come with
multiple (usually four) containers, each of
which holds a different kind of source-
separated waste.

A roll off truck is also known as a dumpster
truck. These vehicles are a very popular type
of trash trucks.
They are rectangular and are used to
transport dumpsters, which are commonly
used to collect construction waste.
These dumpsters are loaded and unloaded
from roll off trucks using wheels to literally
roll the dumpsters on and off.

aluminium with a tipping angle of 90° that
allows the waste to be dumped directly
into the auto-compacting machines.

Compactors
• Garbage compactors are appropriate to
handle the collection of large quantities of
refuse.
• The refuse compactors is similar in principle
to the roll packer, but has an additional
barrier plate for the compression of garbage
and has a larger capacity.
Truck Mounted

24
Compactors
• The compactors are available in 7 to 13 cubic
meter capacities and are fitted with
underfloor sumps to prevent liquid seepage.
• Both the roll packer and the compactor are
manufactured using high-tensile abrasion-
resistant steel that is built to last years
without showing signs of corrosion.
Truck Mounted
Compactor
• Mini dumper is an ideal machine for general waste
collection in narrow urban streets and alleys which are
inaccessible to large waste collection trucks.
• This vehicle can dump the solid waste into trash
compaction vehicles, or the nearest dumping site.
• The hydraulic system consists of two hydraulic
cylinders for tipping/dumping and two hydraulic
cylinders for stabilizing the vehicle.
• Furthermore a tipping angle of 85 degrees ensures
complete emptying of the container every time. 25
Mini Dumper / Tipper
Mini Dumper
• Developed arm rolls on 8 ton GVW vehicles and
subsequently developed smaller versions of arm
rolls on different vehicles.
• Arm rolls are being used extensively for
transportation of solid waste in a number of
municipalities of Pakistan.
• These machines are robust and versatile and are
used in situations where faster speed of
transferring waste to dumping sites is required.
26
Truck Mounted Arm Rolls

• Tractor towed mini skip loaders are used for lifting
small waste bins from narrow urban streets.
• The specially designed waste bins are placed at
strategic locations through out the urban center,
citizens fill the waste bins during the course of the
day.
• When a bin is full the tractor towed skip loader
replaces the full bin with an empty bin and dumps the
full bin at the dumping site. It is an in-expensive
alternate to arm rolls.
27
Tractor Based Skip Loaders
Tractor Based Skip
Loader
• It is a revolutionary and cost effective waste
collection and disposal system using tractor as
prime mover.
• The hydraulic capability of tractor is used to
operate the system, which comprises of a tractor
towed carrier and specially designed 5m³
containers which are placed at strategic locations.

• . The unit can be operated by any 35 HP (or above)
tractor. The containers are filled by citizens, the
tractor lifts the container, loads it on to itself,
transports it to the dumping site and tips it empty.
• All of these operations are achieved without
anyone having to come in contact with the waste.
Empty container is then brought back to the
location and tractor along with the carrier
proceeds to next container site. All this is one man
operation. 29
